Woot! It's a DEMO SWAP!!"WTF is that?" you ask. OK, we'll let you in on the secret–it's a hyped-up networking event, except there's booze, producers, label owners, audio engineers, and supremely excellent music on board from local sensations Protman and Bounte. Also there is booze–as much booze as you deem necessary to aid in proper social navigation and which your wallet can support and aid in a cab ride back home. Here's an even better sound-bite: "An industry night that doubles as a balls-out fun party." We've even pushed it back a week from normal Ramp nights (Tuesday, July 17th) so that you have more time to tell your friends and drag them along.

We'll let you in for a reduced cover ($2 instead of $5) if you're a musician / producer / 2d-designer / visualist who brings a stack of demos / web-folios / 3d-excursions / DVDs / etc, who gives them away through the night. We hope you'll walk out with an equally large stack of CDRs, DVDs and biz cards, but that last bit of initiative is up to you. We've assembled the right people and slapped name tags on (many of) them, so now you get to go chat with them, have fun, and hopefully advance your career (and hey, there's booze, remember? That makes it easier to approach strangers).

But it's not nearly as socially awkward and lame as all those "networking" events you get evites to at your day-job email address. We've got an excellent soundtrack provided by Protman, a local electronic magician who's most recently been throwing down low-fi samples with the computer band K-Rad, and a live set by Bounte, another Chicago native who's been busy blurring the lines between intelligent dance music, hip-hop, rock, jazz, and classical, but with a credible feel.

And, as always with the Ramp Chicago nights, you'll have the comfort of knowing that Emulsion will be at your side with his ambient, IDM and electro to fill in the gaps, and that Liz Revision will be on hand to fulfill your need for quirky, glitched-out melodic electronics and weird techno.

June 12th Flyer Image You know that one video by Dove that's been floating around YouTube featuring the time-lapse video of a woman havingYou know that one video by Dove that's been floating around YouTube featuring the time-lapse video of a woman having her hair and makeup done, then being further altered in Photoshop to enhance her features, and finally ending up on a billboard? The multi-talented Benn Jordan supplied the music for it with a track off of his latest album, Kirlian Selections. It not only is representative of one aspect of his sound, you could see it as a metaphor for his musical composition process.

First off, Benn has a zillion aliases (The Flashbulb, Acidwolf, Flexe, Q-bit, DJ ASCII, Lucid32, and more) and an incredibly diverse output. He often starts composing with live instruments and then alters and morphs them via digital signal processing, much in the manner that our model was given virtual plastic surgery. He's probably best known for his melodic breakcore with live instrumentation in the vein of Squarepusher, but he's also done classical music albums with a focus on guitar, piano, and sitar; classic acid releases; aggressive drill-n-bass (he opened for The Dillinger Escape Plan in 2005) and his own brand of melodic acid which he'll be performing live at Ramp Chicago with various instruments and synths. He outright nails anything he wants to accomplish musically, which explains why he's an in-demand commercial music producer. However, he won't just take on any project—it has to speak to him first. The aforementioned Dove commercial was one of them since it critiqued the media's portrayal of beauty.

Sharing Benn's diversified musical sentiment is The Deep Element, aka Surachai Sutthisasanakul who makes experimental electronic music that pushes the sonic envelope yet employs downright beautiful melodies at the same time. While he professes a love for the aggression and drive behind heavy metal, he's not above compassion as shown by his volunteer work helping the victims of the Asian tsunami in Thailand. His latest project is a collaborative effort called [co]sen_tasi and is available on iTunes, and his next album, Currents, is due for a late spring release on shade:red.

Tired of laptop performers staring intently at their screens amid bleeps and clicks over the PA? Experiencing Surachai together with Benn in the same night is sure to be entertaining and a step above traditional live PA. Show up early to catch The Deep Element leading off a night of boundarypushing electronica and live instrumentation via Benn Jordan's eclectic approach and engaging stage presence. Residents Liz Revision (aka Quantazelle) contributes minimal techno, glitch, and IDM and Emulsion adds his own personal brand of melodic electro and ambient.

Here's a set of guidelines I wrote to follow if you're an electronic musician who's wondering how to get booked to play live in clubs or other venues.

It's geared towards people who are just starting out, but it's a good read for people who have already been performing live as there are some interesting tips you might not have thought of (for instance, point #: get a mini-presskit together).

There is also a bit of contention on point #3, "Avoid dead air." Some performers would rather have a break between songs, similar to a live band. However, it's my recommendation that you aim for a cohesive set from the beginning. If you do choose later to pause between tracks and converse with the audience or something similar, you can just turn the sound down to do so.

Briefly:

  1. Get a mini-press kit together specifically for getting booked

  2. Let them know what you sound like live

  3. Make sure that you will avoid dead air

  4. Do some research on venues, and start small

  5. Find your contact person, and respond quickly

  6. Agree on details before the gig

  7. Invite everyone you know

  8. Bring some light

  9. Bring audio adapters

  10. Bring CDs

Machinedrum will school you in partying like you're in a Brooklyn art loft

Glitch-hop / IDM sensation Machinedrum stops in from Brooklyn to share his sound with Chicago at Sonotheque. Local musician Justin McGrath opens with gritty electro party beats and residents Emulsion and Liz Revision DJ ambient, glitchy techno, electro, and IDM.

Ramp Chicago

***

"Which is better, New York or Chicago?" This innocent little question explodes a heated debate between fans of either city. Chicago has less-expensive housing, but New York has a superior public transit system. New York has a phenomenal restaurant scene, but Chicago smells better in the summer. Chicago has Ramp Chicago for quality electronic music nights and New York has Machinedrum's Cassette fe^tes—all-night art / film/ dance parties featuring a who's-who of contemporary electronic music and indie hip-hop. When Machinedrum takes over the PA at Sonotheque, you'll get to experience a taste of Brooklyn in the swanky sonic environment of Sonotheque here in Chicago–and you just might just feel the urge to take your shirt off.

It's easy to see why Travis Stewart's Machinedrum project has been compared to artists like Prefuse 73, Autechre, and Funkstorung. Take Autechre's algorithmic glitch, combine it with Prefuse 73's micro-sampled hip-hoppery, toss in Funkstorung's genre-crossing prolific remix power, then add the melodic sensibility of Plaid and you can start to imagine his sound. As one of the first artists on the much-lauded (but now defunct) stateside IDM label Merck Records, he sold out albums, raised the label's popular consciousness, and garnered critical acclaim. Look for two upcoming releases on the Normrex label this year.

And he knows what it takes to make a party go off. Along with two-time DMC World Champion DJ IE.merg he released a ground-breaking battle record for turntablists. Taking his music to the next level, Travis also organizes monthly Brooklyn-based dance parties featuring art openings, live painting, and film screenings under the Cassette banner. Past performers include Jimmy Edgar, Praveen, Telefon Tel Aviv and more.

Make sure you get to Sonotheque early enough to catch local talent Justin McGrath—a one-time producer of dense, emotional IDM who's switched lanes and now cranks out noisy, analog synth-based dance tracks while still maintaining his characteristic sweeping melodic lines and dense orchestration. Don't think it can be done? Justin will prove you wrong. And Machinedrum will keep the party going, bringing the sounds of a Brooklyn art loft to one of the best-sounding clubs in Chicago.

“Free music? A record label is giving away all of its releases? And it's legal to download? Well it can't be that g—whoah, hold on-- this is really excellent stuff here... free you say? C'mon, there's got to be some catch...”

Nope, there's no catch, people: quality underground music can be yours for a total cost of zero dollars ($0.00). Witness the power of the Netlabel—the new, super niche-y music distribution platform with an instant delivery, grab-it-while-it's-fresh aesthetic that's only possible because of the Internet. While it's similar to a traditional independent label, the main difference is that a Netlabel has no physical component to any of its releases—everything is digital and free to download. iTunes, eMusic or any other digital download broker is never part of the picture, proving that the power of the Internet, combined with pure DIY spirit can bypass the traditional system of music distribution.

It's fitting that most Netlabels feature IDM and experimental electronic releases, seeing as the genre is produced on computers likely to be connected to the Internet at some point. The most established Netlabels include Kikapu & Monotonik (IDM), Textone (minimal techno), and 8bitpeoples (8bit / Chiptune). While they oftentimes feature a mixture of higher profile and less-established artists, one thing is consistent: they're always focused on bringing quality music to a larger audience.

Enter Xynthetic [pronounced "Synthetic"], the Netlabel that's intent on blowing out your eardrums as well as your musical preconceptions with releases by such talented producers as Mochipet, Phylum Sinter, Mercury Effect, Zainetica, and Ramp Chicago resident, Emulsion.

You owe it to yourself to see and hear the innovators behind Xynthetic in their first Chicago appearance. Josh Garrett (Xyn) a native of Detroit / Ann Arbor has contributed remixes and tracks for labels like Component and en:peg, while Graeme Foote (Pyxis) is a respected Vancouver club DJ. Both are convinced that traditional music distribution channels have failed musicians and believe that a Netlabel that connects the music of talented artists with an appreciative audience will only bring great things. Building upon their eclectic-but-excellent theme, local celebrity selector Ianhixxx will shake the subwoofers and your expectations with his genre-bending forays into electro, Italo, growly techno, acid and IDM.

DJ Request Policy T-shirtSo you're at the cool trendy club on a Thursday mixing in the sweet new white label your pal the label owner just handed you, when suddenly there's an incessant tapping on your left shoulder. You look up and it's a post-sorority, club-hopping, fashion-clueless Trixie grinning excitedly. "Can you play (retarded over-marketed pop song) by (retarded over-marketed pop sensation)!?" she says to you in that half-question / half-command tone.

All you need do is point to your shirt.

Assuming you've moved the button to the second box and Ms. Requestor is literate, she'll glance down, force a polite grin of disgust and breeze off in a huff. Good work!

So a few hours later you find yourself at a grungily cool loft on the outskirts of town, the air thick with cigarette smoke, stale beer, and sweat. Crowds of uber-trendy hipsters are clustered around, and you've already gotten two trainspotters to call out your most obscure 12-inch German imports. These people are on it. Thankfully that little check button is movable, and with a bit of quick maneuvering you've made a bunch of new friends and gotten to show off your inimitable record collection and impeccable taste. Check you out.
