AS PART OF EXPANDED BIG DAY PREP SHOWDOWN III
Ypsilanti, Mich. (August 25, 2007) – The Detroit Metro Sports Commission (DMSC) today awarded $500 scholarship awards to eight local high school students as a part of the Big Day Prep Showdown III presented by Comcast Local.
The Big Day Prep Showdown scholarship award program is in partnership with the Detroit Lions. The awards were determined by a blend of academic, civic and extra curricular activity and announced at half-time of each of today's game at ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium.
Today's award recipients are:
Game 1 – Jeff Adams, Chelsea H.S./Justin Thomas, Ypsilanti H.S.
Game 2 - Andrew Saunders, Plymouth H.S./Warren Eakes, Belleville H.S.
Game 3 - Jordan Raiford, Canton H.S./Tyler Kleeberger, Toledo Central Catholic H.S.
Game 4 - Dan Abel, Milford H.S./Jack Kennedy, Walled Lake Central H.S.
"Our goal for the Big Day Prep Showdown has always been to expand the event to a blend of not only exciting high school football, but also a celebration of the school communities," said Dave Beachnau, DMSC executive director. The new scholarship program continues the evolution to our long-range vision for the event."
"This student scholarship program is an exciting addition to the 2007 Big Day Prep Showdown," said DMSC Chairman Robert Porcher. "The vision for the event is to celebrate not only football, but to acknowledge the tremendous academic and civic accomplishments of students from the participating schools who excel in their own pursuits."
In addition to the scholarship award program, Big Day Prep Showdown Game Week activities also included: a V.I.P. preview for coaches, players and sponsors on Monday, Aug. 20, at Comcast Local's studio in Southfield; coach and player visits from several Big Day Prep Showdown teams to four Beaumont Hospitals' pediatric care units on Tuesday, Aug, 21; and the selection of the Comcast Local Sideline Reporter Challenge contest winner - Matt Pocket , a senior from Warren Cousino H.S. Pocket delivered sideline reports for the broadcast of the Aug. 24, Cousino v. Fraser game of the Big Day Prep Showdown III.
Big Day Prep Showdown III sponsors are Big Boy; Comcast Local; Comcast; 1270 'XYT The Sports Station; Beaumont Hospitals; Community Bowling Centers; Sportsland of Trenton and the U.S. Army.
The Detroit Metro Sports Commission is a subsidiary of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau that was formed in 2001 to bring regional, national and international amateur sporting events to metro Detroit.
