Sable Starr died on Friday night.

Sable and her best friend Lori Lightning were the queens of the Sunset strip in the early 70's. Barely teenagers, the two middle school girls would hang out at Rodney's English Disco where they had "relations" with a laundry list of pop stars including (but not limited to): Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, David Bowie, Johnny Thunders, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton and Iggy Pop (i.e. 3/4 of The Stooges), Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn (i.e. the entire band known as T.Rex), Richard Hell and Stiv Bators.



My infatuation with her began when I saw a photo of her in a magazine a few years ago. I was an only child growing up, and Sable seemed like the cool older sister I wished that I had. She seemed so worldly and sophisticated, and she led a glamorous life in a more glamorous era. In spite of (or perhaps because of) her age, she was the center of attention among the rock stars of her time, all of whom would come to LA and seek out her company as though she were the Maharishi. And then: she disappeared from the scene for good, retreating to (at last report) Vegas. All the photographs of her in circulation are from her teenage years, surrounded by the Iggy Pops and Johnny Thunders' of the world. What a perfect way to seal the myth.

In 2006 I wrote a short, glam-rock inspired song about her. Indeed my whole album "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" is basically a tribute to Sable, or at least to the idea of her.

The fact that Rodney Bingenheimer (he of the aforementioned English Disco) has played the song several times on his KROQ show is an incredible honor for me. I wonder if Sable herself ever heard it? I'll never know.

LA's Nite Jewel, my new obsesh.

Hi! I just submitted my new short-n-sweet mix for my friends (and new neighbors - Hi Paul! I can see your house from here!) IAMSOUND Records' debut show on East Village Radio and thought I'd share it with you. The format called for a 15ish minute mix, which was hard at first but I soon realized that I like my mixes the way I like my women: short, sweet, and hot. Just kidding: that's actually how I like my espresso.

This mix is probably my most personal one so far, it very much captures the story in my head right now in a strangely perfect way...

Another bonus about moving to LA this week is that I get to go see Perez' new best friend and object of my above-referenced remix Little Boots at Cinespace tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you, my new Angelino neighbors, there - please say hi!

It's 3:29AM. I'm just getting back from Indie 103.1 in L.A where I was a guest on DJ Paul V's Neon Noise show.
