The creative process is messy, confusing, ineffable. And as much as it may seem like dancing about architecture, I've learned boatloads from reading interviews with other musicians discussing their methods in books, magazines and blogs. I've even had the pleasure of talking to a few of them myself, including Jamie Lidell, The Presets, Simian Mobile Disco, and Underworld (coming soon).
So in the same spirit in which I make music as an effort to inspire and give pleasure to others in the same way that they have done for me; so too am I going to start to document the disgustingly disorganized and often disheartening but ultimately richly fulfilling thing that is "songwriting."
Quick recap: in 2006 I finished my first album of original songs, released it on my own label and toured the UK singing, playing guitar with my band Luxxury. In 2007 I started a blog called DiscoWorkout.com, learned to DJ, started doing remixes, and signed a publishing deal. I got very busy because I found it refreshing to try all of these non-band-related ways of making music. But by the end of 2008 I suddenly realized that I didn't have any new Luxxury songs, and that I had no idea what my next album should sound like. This was the issue that really flummoxed me, as I'd written perhaps 50-60 fragments of songs, but I hadn't finished any of them. They were all really diverse stylistically and I was severely blocked creatively in part because I simply couldn't choose a direction.
At the start of 2009 I was asked to contribute a cover of to the Buffet Libre Rewind project. It was really therapeutic to put this together, and helpful that it was a cover since I was able to focus purely on creating a new sound to work with. I was getting pretty sick of slick, choppy, aggressive electro, and the song I turned in (my version of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Y Control) took its sonic direction from the remix of "Meddle" I'd done for Little Boots a few months earlier. I was starting to play with samples, chopping them up and mixing and matching with original music to create textures and layers. I liked this sound, there was something gloriously elusive and evocative about it. Things started to come together.
But then, in February this year, I moved to LA and my publisher booked me solid with cowrites and a few remix commissions. Again I enjoyed the diversity of the projects but it started to feel like I was just procrastinating. I worked on remixes and tracks for other artists nonstop for six months, dabbling every now and then with the scraps of ideas for my next album. And by the end of the summer I still hadn't finished any songs for myself. I realized I needed to do something drastic.
So about a month ago I booked myself a small, semi secret show, on an off night, among friends. Because what I've finally learned is that without the next gig on the calendar, I will not finish my own songs. I'd forgotten that in the early days of Luxxury I would try to have a new song for every show, and I'd drop the weakest song from the previous one. Which, for me, was a brilliant strategy, as I clearly need the pressure of an outside event to complete things. So why on earth did I ever stop? I've forgotten. But I'm ready to get the momentum back.
Which brings us to today, as the show approaches, and I am working like a demon, and it is a wonderful feeling. I've listed the show on my Myspace calendar but perhaps you should wait til I've shaken off the rust? Or come if you want to watch me regain my sea legs. Sorry to mix my metaphors, basically I may sound like a rusty sailor at first. So, consider yourself warned, me hearties.
Anyway, more to come as the process continues to unfold. Thanks for reading.
xx, BvL

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON DISCOWORKOUT.COM APRIL 21 2009: Sable Starr (far right) at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco in the mid 1970s, aged 14 or so.Sable Starr died on Friday night. Sable and her best friend Lori Lightning were the queens of the Sunset strip in the early 70's. Barely teenagers, the two middle school girls would hang out at Rodney's English Disco where they had "relations" with a laundry list of pop stars including (but not limited to): Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, David Bowie, Johnny Thunders, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton and Iggy Pop (i.e. 3/4 of The Stooges), Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn (i.e. the entire band known as T.Rex), Richard Hell and Stiv Bators. My infatuation with her began when I saw a photo of her in a magazine a few years ago. I was an only child growing up, and Sable seemed like the cool older sister I wished that I had. She seemed so worldly and sophisticated, and she led a glamorous life in a more glamorous era. In spite of (or perhaps because of) her age, she was the center of attention among the rock stars of her time, all of whom would come to LA and seek out her company as though she were the Maharishi. And then: she disappeared from the scene for good, retreating to (at last report) Vegas. All the photographs of her in circulation are from her teenage years, surrounded by the Iggy Pops and Johnny Thunders' of the world. What a perfect way to seal the myth. In 2006 I wrote a short, glam-rock inspired song about her. Indeed my whole album "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" is basically a tribute to Sable, or at least to the idea of her. mp3: "Sable Starr" - Luxxury The fact that Rodney Bingenheimer (he of the aforementioned English Disco) has played the song several times on his KROQ show is an incredible honor for me. I wonder if Sable herself ever heard it? I'll never know. Rest in piece, Ms. Shields. xx, Baron von Luxxury is My Fake Name

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON WWW.DISCOWORKOUT.COM: LA's Nite Jewel, my new obsesh.Hi! I just submitted my new short-n-sweet mix for my friends (and new neighbors - Hi Paul! I can see your house from here!) IAMSOUND Records' debut show on East Village Radio and thought I'd share it with you. The format called for a 15ish minute mix, which was hard at first but I soon realized that I like my mixes the way I like my women: short, sweet, and hot. Just kidding: that's actually how I like my espresso. This mix is probably my most personal one so far, it very much captures the story in my head right now in a strangely perfect way... ALSO I officially moved to LA yesterday. As in: the movers drove my stuff away from SF and into Silver Lake. Tonight I am going to celebrate by seeing icy disco titan-ette and recent Italians Do It Better(via Gloriette)-signee Nite Jewel at The Smell with Gang Gang Dance and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti. Another bonus about moving to LA this week is that I get to go see Perez' new best friend and object of my above-referenced remix Little Boots at Cinespace tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you, my new Angelino neighbors, there - please say hi! xx, Baron von Luxxury is My Fake Name RELATED POSTS:%RELATEDPOSTS%

Disco Sunday 39: BvL Summer Night City 2008 Mixx
It's 3:29AM. I'm just getting back from Indie 103.1 in L.A where I was a guest on DJ Paul V's Neon Noise show. I shared a mic (and a very hot, AC-free studio) with DW faves The Black Ghosts, fresh off an awesome live show at the Echo with Does it Offend You, Yeah. We were also joined by my friends Ellei (aka Photobot) from Shadowscene and Paul from Iamsound Records (home to the Ghost, Sunny Day Sets Fire and Little Boots). Paul V. premiered my new 2 part mixx, which includes some of my favorite tracks from the past year, plus a few surprises. I hope you like it because I want your love, I need: your love. I came all this way but you're not in Berlin.
Another night. Another train. I'm starting to forget your face. You're driving me insane. Why cant you just stay in one place?
And where will you be tonight? And where will you be tonight? Tonight.
I can meet you at the Man Ray just off the Champs Elysées. I'll go anywhere that you say.
The night is alive and the girl is so young; Shes wearing Chanel and I'm so under her thumb.
But the music sounds better with you. And chasing you around the world is a bore.
To Berlin from San Francisco where I'll kiss you in the disco. But I missed you and insist we try again.
Where will you be tonight? I'm looking for signs of life Where will you be tonight? Where will you be tonight?

I have a problem. You are not on the list. And you are dismissed.
I'm sophisticated. I'm young and jaded. Pleasure is not a crime. And the pleasure is mine.
It seems unwise to feel too much in your arms So don't try.
She wants to try, but he wont let her; Sex with rich people feels so much better. She's getting high with the jet setter; Sex with rich people feels so much better.
With enough persistence you can gain admittance. Because men (every now and then) want to feel eighteen again.
It seems unwise to feel too much in your arms So don't try.
She wants to try, but he wont let her; Sex with rich people feels so much better. She's getting high with the jet setter; Sex with rich people feels so much better.
She wants to try, but he wont let her; Sex with rich people feels so much better. She's getting high; she's getting wetter; Sex with rich people feels so much better.

"A Tragic Waste of Perfectly Good Love"Composers: Blake Robin and Devin O'Brien Publisher: Expensive Sounding Music (BMI), Razor and Tie (BMI), Machine Punk Music (ASCAP) Artist: Luxxury First Release Date: October 2006 Somebody give a reason, I wanna know for sure. I said give me a reason because I don't know anymore. Somebody give me permission to do what I'm trying to do Yeah I think I need permission to say these things to you.
Is this "that perfect feeling" or some semblance thereof? Or is this another tragic waste of perfectly good love? I just need a reason in case push comes to shove. So tell me is this another tragic waste of perfectly good love?
Somebody give me a reason to bother with this song. Somebody give me a reason. Somebody sing along.
You find it hard to distinguish what's fake and true. When you're the only one not laughing it means the joke's on you.
Is this "that perfect feeling" or some semblance thereof? Or is this another tragic waste of perfectly good love? I just need a reason in case push comes to shove. So tell me is this another tragic waste of perfectly good love? The train has left the station and you're ruining my vacation. Spit and shine relations. My pupils undergoing dilation.
I'm just trying to be. I'm just trying to be understood. I'm doing it for your own good. I wish that I could.
Now I just want to be understood. I don't think that I should. You're telling me but I don't think I should. You're telling me but I don't think I should.

"Girl, you're so hot and our love, it hits the spot I've thought about it a lot. And ready or not: here we go."
I love the way she smells and her perfect mystery. I'm the boy for her and she's the girl for me.
I know I'm a lucky stiff. I wont be a procrastinator. There's no way I can let her go. Its only getting later.

Spending money that we don't have Impressing people that we don't like.
It takes over me when it sounds dirty. Its not making money; it's a luxury Takes me to extremes when it sounds dirty Its not making money; its a luxury.
It feels so good being bleached down to the roots. We've got synthesizers and white leather boots.
We're going far: we have no equal. It's a vanity affair because hell is other people.
It takes over me when it sounds dirty. Its not making money; it's a luxury Takes me to extremes when it sounds dirty Its not making money; its a luxury.
It takes over me when it sounds dirty. Its not making money; it's a luxury Takes me to extremes when it sounds dirty Its not making money; its a luxury. Yeah. Lets get together here or wherever; Nothing's going to keep my hands off you. Don't be too clever, I don't mean forever. Because you're here, your heart is beating, and you'll do.
Punch drunk love affairs leave a lot to be desired. There always seems to be too much assembly required. I've got no use for all your talk about what tomorrow brings. Baby, you should try and use that tongue for more important things.
Lets get together here or wherever; Nothing's going to keep my hands off you. Don't be too clever, I don't mean forever. We're gonna go all the way me and you.
Lets get together here or wherever; Nothing's going to keep my hands off you. Don't be too clever, I don't mean forever. Because you're here your heart is beating and you'll do fine Lets get together here or wherever; Nothing's going to keep my hands off you.

This amazing envelope came in the mail the other day: It contained a copy of the most awesome interview ever by Lulu Mcallister of the USF Foghorn. (Slight nitpick/correction: I actually said that I was inspired by Sisters of Mercy front man Andrew Eldritch's fake names - and not that these were fake names that I have used for myself. After much pleading, I finally got Myspace to convert my Baron von Luxxury Myspace at www.myspace.com/baronvonluxxury to a music profile. So you can listen to my remixes for Glass Candy, Sunny Day Sets Fire, Hilary Duff, Robots in Disguise and more on that profile, and there's also a big ol' list of blogs where you can download the songs for free. So go thar!Speaking of my remixes, today's CMJ says: "Syncopated moments of silence can still be golden, and San FranDisco newcomer Baron Von Luxxury's suave take on "Brainless" is proof enough. A buzzing bass lulls you into an understated frenzy, and you keep expecting the interplay between beats to spiral out of control, but BVL keeps his cool, and you wouldn't have it any other way."

Hi!!! Luxxury's song "Sweet and Vicious" was on MTV's "The Hills" last week! You can hear the song play prominently as the drama unfolds between this one vapid blonde chick and this other slightly-more-vapid blonde chick with bigger boobs here (from 1:38-1:50 in the first segment after the intro/titles): http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1574755&vid=191255 Also!!! We are proud to announce that Luxxury are joining Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Cut Copy, Spank Rock and many more of the planet's best electro acts at RCRDLBL.com, the new label offshoot of Downtown Records (Gnarls Barkley, Art Brut, Eagles of Death Metal).
