Hello all! I have posted a new song. This is one of my favorite songs to perform and too bad I didn't write it. This was actually the second song I learned to play on the guitar, and even though I am not playing it in this recording, I still love to sing it.

The band behind me is my sister's band, Amy Black and the Red Clay Rascals. She's great, and so is her band. So, thanks for letting me sing a few, Amy!

If you like what you hear, drop me a line!

Hello blog land! I have not written in a long time. I was in Guatemala for 5 and a half weeks, getting my Spanish on and meeting a lovely family, la familia Jimenez from Antigua. Below is a poem I just wrote expressing my feelings about leaving Guatemala. There I was constantly surrounded by others in my family, whether they be Guatemaltecos or other foreigners like me. I am now back in my life, with lots of time for myself. The poem is called Soledad, which means solitude or loneliness.

Soledad, de repente tú eres mi compañera
No tienes una melodía para mi
Ni risa, ni sonrisa
Solamente me das a mi el reflejo
Que veo en el espejo

Yo tengo en mi taza
El sabor de una tierra
Yo llevo conmigo
Su artesanía
Yo tengo en mi corazón
El ternura de la familia

Pero no pude llevar los que
Me daban a mi,
No un reflejo vacío
Sino alegría y cariño.
Se los dan a alguien como yo
Ahora una extranjera querida

Soledad, no puedo aguantarte

Current mood:  tired
At the next show with my sister Amy's band, I will be performing "in the round" with some other musicians to open the night at JP O'Hanlan's. I intend on taking my current obsession with the music of Hank Williams (Sr.) public with either one or two of his songs. I read in Johnny Cash's autobiography that he went through a Jimmie Rodgers obsession, so I suppose it is a natural thing to be intrigued with performers in the long-ago past. I am in good company! I think I will perform Long Gone Lonesome Blues and perhaps Please Don't Let Me Love You (which I don't think he wrote). I get a kick out of that yodel-like voice! Maybe I'll put one up here at myspace. Thanks for reading!

Last night, I was a part of a show that my sister, Amy Black, headlined in Groton, MA. She gathered some great musicians together and we had a great time. I think the crowd (primarily made up of people we know!) really enjoyed it and there was such a great energy from them and the band. We had some bluegrass, blues, folk, and country. I'll be letting people know when we are going to play again. Till next time...

I have a new song on my site. Since I don't really like naming my songs, I gave this one a name that explains its origin. I wrote this song while reading (not at the exact same time!) an autobiography of Johnny Cash. I am a big fan, but not such a big fan of his drug problem and the damage that he did because of it. Any way, the lyrics for this song are my interpretation of what he might have been feeling during those rough years. As always, comments are welcome!

Hello to all of you in blog land. I am surprised to see that my blog has be viewed 101 times. I am excited! Thanks to any of you who have read it. Well, my subject line says it all. I am very busy right now in life with things other than music, so I have not written a new song in a while. I did perform at the open mike at the Burren a few weeks back which was good. I got there at 6:30, and I was DEAD LAST. So, I was squeezed in somehow before midnight and performed four songs. The last one was the most fun: Blue Suede Shoes. Easy to play and great to sing. I think it went over well. Hopefully this week, I can get over to Club Passim to play 2 songs...oh, no! I'm leaving Davis Square, going into the big world of other open mikes. I hope it isn't as scary as it seems! When I get some new songs up, I'll be sure the let you all know. Have a wonderful holiday season!

Two nights ago I played at the open mic at the Burren. It was a good atmosphere because (unlike to what I thought was going to happen) some folks really were there to listen to the music. It felt like a show (short, albeit) because when you looked out at the audience, you couldn't see the people very well. Well, it was a good time, and I had a couple of supporters there which is always nice! I played my favorite Johnny Cash number "Folsom Prison Blues," my song about the icicles melting, and a more up-tempo version of my new song "World Go Round." Stay tuned for the next open mic date.

Hello. I am writing this because I went to Memphis, TN this past weekend with my sister and her friend Jeni (who is a singer-songwriter in Nashville), and we went to the Sun Studio on Union Avenue. It was pretty inspiring (or what have you) to be there where many of the early rock 'n roll greats recorded (Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash). There is a photo under my pictures of me holding the famous Sun microphone. I feel ready to write more music!! Have a wonder end to the summer!

I think I am writing this blog primarily for myself, but if you are reading this, thanks for being such a good friend that you are interested in my performances. This weekend, I performed at the Cafe 138 in Nashville, TN. I had good connections (my parents and sister), and they were able to get me in to play at the music venue of their church in Nashville. Small crowd, but very supportive. It was a great place to have my first real set (if seven songs counts).

I ended the set with Blue Suede Shoes in honor of my relative (???--see the name of my grandmother on the song listed). We are traveling to Memphis to see his home this weekend and to hear some good blues. I'll be back to Boston soon.
