Current mood:patriotic
"I'm going to be waiting longer for a donut than I waited to vote," laughed a Krispy Kreme patron sitting in the drive-through line. Some patrons showed up with cups of free Starbucks coffee already in hand, making the most of some companies' incentives to drive voters to the polls. We checked out the Krispy Kreme on Virginia Beach Blvd. to settle a matter of curiosity: would the lines be longer for the polls, or for the free donuts?

The drive-through line wrapped all the way around the building.

The dine-in line wasn't much better.

The crowd inside waited patiently for a patriotic treat.

So how about you? Did you take advantage of "I Voted" freebies? If so, which did you wait longer for, democracy or donuts?

We're looking for the tastiest, yummiest, most delicious fall desserts. Like... a pecan pie that's to die for. Or a pumpkin-spiced cookie that makes you drool just thinking about it. Where should we go in Hampton Roads for a restaurant dessert that's worth the $5 or $7 or even $9??

Help us out! E-mail brianne.warner@link757.com with your recommendations.

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Monty Python's Spamalot is the outrageous new musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic "Monty Python and The Holy Grail." Directed by Tony Award-winner Mike Nichols, with a book by Eric Idle and music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez, Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences everywhere are eating up Spamalot.

OK, this is not a weird personal ad. We're brainstorming today for our back-to-school college guide and want some thoughts from our readers. Should we list 24-hour study places, other than, uh, Ihop? Should we tell you about the bars near campuses? Should we list the best classes or the worst?

Part of our difficulty here is we have such a wide variety of colleges: ODU, NSU, TCC, Virginia Wesleyan, EVMS, Regent, etc.

So, what do you all want to see? E-mail Link's editor, Brianne, at brianne.warner@link757.com with ideas or if you are up for brainstorming today, July 14. I'll e-mail you back with more details.

Transformed featuring Elm & Oak, and DJ Tanner (Friday July 11 7PM Contemporary Art Center of Virginia)

The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (CAC) wants you to see toilet paper rolls and gummy bears in a new way.

Those are just two of the unique materials employed by thirteen artists in "Transformed," a group exhibition of two-dimensional, sculptural, installation and video art. Commonplace objects including fishing line, chairs, toothpicks and light bulbs have been manipulated, re-appropriated and elevated to the status of fine art.

"These materials are frequently relied upon for utilitarian purposes," said CAC associate curator Natalie Bray. "The works in 'Transformed' investigate the physical potential of mundane and familiar items to become art objects that transcend their former roles in everyday life.

"

"Transformed" features works by:

Matt Calderwood | YaYa Chou | Tim DeVoe | Tara Donovan | Felix Gonzalez-Torres | Tom Friedman Robert Lazzarini | Steven Siegel | Yuken Teruya | Shirley Tse | Fischli & Weiss | Rachel Perry Welty

Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox. After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself. With wickedly brilliant tutors--including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan--Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.
