The Riverfront Times have announced Magic Smoking Monkey Theater's Jim Ousley and Oscar Madrid as the recipients of the 2009 MasterMind Award in the Film/Video category.  The local pair are the makers of the award-winning mockumentary "Hooch & Daddy-O" and have been nationally recognized for their comedy/horror screenplay "The Bloodfest Club".

The MasterMind Awards are featured in this week's issue of the RFT and a gala celebration will be held on Thursday, August 27th at the St. Louis Artists' Guild.  According to the RFT, "Our aim is to foster cutting-edge work that's being done right now, right here in St. Louis.  The intent of the MasterMind Awards is to honor the innovators whose cultural and creative contributions are helping to redesign - and redefine - the town where we all live."

In “The Bloodfest Club”, a Chuck Norris-obsessed janitor leads a brat pack of prep school students in a battle against alien zombies on graduation night.  The script is inspired by "Evil Dead 2", "The Lost Boys", "The Goonies", and the great John Hughes teen comedies of the eighties.

The screenplay earned award nominations earlier this year at the Beverly Hills Film Festival and The Great American Screenplay Competition presented by ACEFEST in New York City.  The screenplay was recently honored as a quarterfinalist in the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards, the BlueCat Screenplay Competition, Scriptapalooza, and was selected as a Top 10% screenplay by the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Competition, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

...a bunch of crazy Smoking Monkeys got together and decided to make a movie.  That movie was "Hooch & Daddy-O" and, as luck would have it, you'll be able to see it back on the big screen, outdoors at Schlafly Tap Room!

We hope that you can attend a very special screening of "Hooch & Daddy-O" on Tuesday, July 15th at the Schlafly Tap Room. The event is hosted by Cinema St. Louis, presenter of the St. Louis International Film Festival. The screening is FREE and will take place on the south parking lot of the Tap Room, 2100 Locust St., just west of downtown St. Louis, beginning at nightfall. Come out and see your favorite characters from the 80s TV cop show that never was!

We'll also be hawking H&D 'Special Edition' DVDs (not available anywhere else) for just $10.

Yo peoples -

Head on over to www.thomascrone.com - the man himself posted a blog about KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park: LIVE!

Performance, Magic Smoking Monkey Theatre: At some point in the last year, I decided to pursue a hobby of catching more live theatre. At least one show per month and/or all the shows of certain companies. Things are holding steady so far this year, with the latest production caught being the Magic Smoking Monkey's hilarious send-up of "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park." Delightful to see longtime monkeys like Amy Elz, Julie Layton and Jim Ousley onstage. And equally fun to catch the performance in what was obviously a sold-out (and hot!) RAC space. Can't wait for next year. Where do we sign the petition for two Monkey shows a year?

...giving you six ROCKIN' reasons to see KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK: LIVE!

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park: LIVE! The dialogue is craptacular. The special effects are better described as "defects." Scenes are riddled with non sequiturs and clumsy transitions, and the set is constructed out of cardboard — and not the expensive stuff. In short, it's another smash hit from Magic Smoking Monkey. Jim Ousley's script is ridiculously faithful to the original movie — a stink-bomb '70s update of The Phantom of the Opera with KISS as superheroes — down to every last painful quip and Ace Frehley "ack!" Ousley also stars as Paul Stanley, a beacon of vacant sexuality who lights up every scene with severely pursed lips and embarrassingly true-to-the-original dance steps. Aaron Orion Baker's Abner Devereaux is a studied portrayal of megalomania and pouting, and he does the best "I've-been-shot-in-the-junk-by-a-laser-gun" face you'll ever witness. Through May 3 at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar Boulevard. Tickets are $15. Call 314-361-5664 or visit www.stlshakespeare.org. (PF)
