I have my second national tour coming up in early 2010. Several friends have asked about the process of booking the last one - so I thought, hey, why not just document the whole thing on here?

I'm going to be as transparent as possible about the process from now until its completion. The tour is in the planning/booking stage as we speak. I hope that guiding you along will help you to develop your own tours, learn from my tricks & pitfalls, and most of all, see the humor in all of it.

If I've learned anything, it's that touring can be a silly business. Running out of gas in Middle-of-Nowhere, Kentucky, is silly. If you don't have a sense of humor, you're screwed.

STEP 1: Concept

Note: I am a completely independent musician - no agent, no manager, no label. With the help of my family, fans, and producer I self-released my first album in August. My team is comprised of a publicist, an intern, a mailing list, and a bunch of really awesome people around the country.

After flying solo at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance this past September, I decided to do things a little bit differently for National Folk Alliance. The conference runs Feb 16-21, and I'd planned on attending solo all year. Alas, I am poor, and traveling with four dudes is pricey.

Douglas Jay Boyd has supplied my acoustic setup for awhile now (cajon/backing vocals); he's a great friend and kickass singer-songwriter, so I asked him to come along. My plan was to do the West Coast solo in January, pick him up at the end of the month, tour the Midwest, then arrive at the conference in Memphis. Doug agrees to February. Three days later, the facebook fairy informs me that he's lost his job. I figure, what the hell, I get bored in the car - and ask Doug to come along with me for the two full months. He agrees.

I cover our memberships to Folk Alliance ($100) - and we both apply as volunteers to cover the cost of the conference ($400). Then we pray to God to get picked as volunteers.

I'd seen a few indie artists tour creatively (see: Ben Sollee, Seth Glier) and make it look like more fun than a 3rd grade science project. Insanely hard work, but with thousands of indie artists pushing for press, it pays to be different. The hum-drum show-to-show routine can get old. I wanted to do something different with this tour, but the best I could come up with was "Two-guitar-slinging-cowboy-boot-loving-homeless-musicians take to road." Original, I know.

After banging our heads against a wall, we decide to call it the "Ragged-Haggard Tour" (a reference to one of my songs) and get on to booking.

This would all change, but I'll get to that later...

Stay tuned for my next post- STEP 2: Routing (or, how not to kill yourself driving across the country).

As some of you have heard, our European tour has been postponed. Rest assured, I have a roundtrip ticket to Dublin that must be used in the next 10 months - it is happening, just not now.

For a number of reasons, we lost critical promotion and booking time in the months leading up to our national tour. A good portion of the tour was a game of catchup: in-between shows we spent our time booking the next portion of the tour (usually about a month out - sometimes more, often less). Needless to say, it was a little nerve-wrecking, but mostly - exhausting. The shows? SO wonderful. The booking: notsomuch. The majority of time that should have been spent resting and doing the things that humans do, we were huddled behind our laptops and on the phone.
So, naturally, we got sick. A lot.
This is no sob-story, I had an absolutely amazing time and will remember the last four months for the rest of my life. So many incredible shows and people and touching stories. Alyse has been a kick-ass tour partner and an even better friend. The idea of the tour was to make it a learning experience. Then, of course, put those lessons to good use. A couple of poorly-promoted shows close to home doesn't really hurt - but on the opposite side of the pond? All the Emergen-C in the world won't compensate for five months of poor sleep (trust me, we've tried). In the end, it wouldn't have been fair to us, our fans, or the venues.

Plans for now are to hit Europe this summer 2010 - all of the same venues will be booked, along with plenty more. Except, it will be SO much bigger and better. That, and the chances of us being a little stinky are much smaller. Though, it will be summertime...so I'm not making any promises.

On that note: I am back in Texas, hanging out with my folks, cooking, reading, and napping. I can say with confidence that just having the time to wash my hair on a daily basis is AWESOME. I'm learning to play new instruments and writing for the first time in months. I will be playing a few shows around Texas through Nov & Dec, but for the most part I'm in recharge mode.

January and February will kick off my West Coast & Midwest Tours with Douglas Jay Boyd (dates coming soon!). Doug is an incredible Austin-based singer-songwriter, and cajon player to boot. He and I kind of look alike (did I mention incredibly good looking, too?). I am so excited about bringing him around the country to meet all of you. And this time, with a little bit more of the know-how.

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to shows, sent messages of love & support, fed us, tipped us, hugged us, and gave my mom yet another reason not to worry about me so much. She and I appreciate it more than you know.

When I first moved to Austin, I told myself I'd play the Cactus Cafe. A year later - here's footage from my first show there, for the Sirens N'Boots Tour. Pretty sure I felt like I was on drugs, the room is pretty magical. Like, mushrooms magical.

Early reviews of "Things Worth Keeping" are coming in.

On a side note, sorry the blog is kind of a mess right now. I'm still redesigning it to fit the website (up soon), and am somewhat of a hack when it comes to HTML.

ANYWAYS...
So I haven't been sure as how to go about this...act like I'm completely above it and haven't been jumping at every Google Alert that comes my way (...please), go scribble in my diary about my "feelings" and leave these floating on the web (as if), or just get it over and post them already. At least out of appreciation because hey, these people took 37-ish minutes out of their day to listen to my album, and then wrote about it. No really, they were timed.

I figured I should take a lesson from my mom, and deal with reviews gracefully.

Then do what I do best, make fun of myself.

The Hot:

Mark Tucker, I feel like a complete dud but thank you for introducing me to a whole slew of new artists. I have no idea who Buffy Saint-Marie is but I'm pretty sure you just earned me some serious brownie points with the Irish-Catholic side of the Tadros family.

Woooooo! Someone found the hidden track! (Guess it's not so hidden now, oops).

The..errr..Not So Hot (lukewarm?):

...in all fairness, Sarah McLachlan was one of the first live shows I went to see. I mean, the woman saves puppies. PUPPIES! Who doesn't want to be her?

Then again, it was only because I couldn't get a hold of Ani DiFranco tickets. Damnit!

I could just drop the whole "folk" thing, but that would mean I'd never be able to use the phrase "folkin' you up" again, and that would just break my heart.

....on that note, you can pre-order "Things Worth Keeping," or tickets to the official CD Release Party* (Austin, TX) now on my website!

*pre-sale tickets $12, $15 at door. Tickets will go to benefit The Care Communities.

I was going to post a long update on each of the tour dates today, but instead I've just have a couple of thoughts to get out on (e)paper.

I woke up this morning like I used to when I had a huge school project coming up I was afraid I'd flub up - you know, that, pit in your stomach, so bad you don't even want to go back to sleep kind of ache? Well, that was me, freaking out about the three months of tour-booking we have ahead of us.

Not all shows are going to be killer. There will be nights where I play for the bar. or bar flies (literally). There will be nights that we walk in to a packed bar and hold their attention right up until 2am, and walk out feeling like we could walk on air. All to play to a dead bar the night after all over again.

I think the tour process is going to be a lot like learning to play the guitar was for me. Organic.

Most people have no idea how totally clueless I am about getting around the guitar in the traditional sense. Half the time I couldn't tell you what chord I'm playing, which scale works for a certain song, even what key - but I've used the last few years to hone my ears & fingertips and create what works for me. Even when I have to break it down to one note at a time (which ends up happening, a lot), everything I pick is pretty instinctual. That being said, for the first two years I owned a guitar - I was horrible. I mean, my timing was tragically bad. And everything, everything was in free time. (IE I had a drummer-phobia). It wasn't till about three years in, when I started songwriting, that anything changed.

Several people told me I had to play with a pick, or hire a guitar teacher to work on a specific technique. Would it have made me a better guitar player? Definitely - but not for what I was trying to accomplish. As a result, I've got a style that is influenced by artists I look up to - Ani DiFranco, Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, but still all my own.

It's going to take time to build a solid national tour that works for me. But I can't wait to just get on the road and find out. I don't have a manager, a booking agent, or label; I think it's time I look at all of that as a really great thing. I own all my own material, I can go where I want whenever I want, and never do anything I feel compromises my beliefs. If and when any of that comes along, I want to have a handle on what works for me - and where I want to go.

I taught myself to play the guitar learning Ani Difranco & Damien Rice covers, and applied my own flavor from there.

I will look to other singer-songwriters I admire to get a handle on the ropes on the road, but in the end, it's up to me to come out swinging.

About Sirens N'Boots
SIRENS 'N BOOTS

(Austin, TX – June 22, 2009) What happens when three up-and-coming female singer-songwriters share the stage at the same time? Exquisite harmonies, breathtaking moments, and intimate magic. Sarah Peacock, Aly Tadros, and Alyse Black will be sharing stages across Texas from July 8th through 21st for their “Kick Off Tour” as “Sirens N’Boots.” Some of the best venues in Texas will witness this charming, irreverent three-some as they spread their soulful melodies over the ears of new and old fans!

With three award-winning recording and touring artists working together, the song choices just got choosier. Each of these songstresses has a recent release, with several of their albums releasing right before the tour.

Video updates of the tour will be posted on YouTube for fans to follow the adventure! Radio and media stops will be planned throughout the tour. The tour will be full of moments and shows not to be missed!

SARAH PEACOCK

“It was Janis Joplin meets Alanis Morissette… a huge voice and unbelievable range. Her songs are well written and have meaning. Her look, her entire act for lack of a better word has commercial appeal. Sarah is ready to sell records.”
Senior Contributor, The Silver Tongue

“Whether you see her show or meet her in person, Sarah Peacock will make an impression. She is a down to earth person with superstar stage presence. Her songs are well written, her musicianship is amazing and her voice will knock you out.”
Angry Face Music – 7:30 Club

“Once you listen, you will see that Sarah is an artist quickly on her way to success!”
High Note Partners Management and Booking

With a positive and melodic approach to songwriting, Sarah Peacock is an artist quickly generating a buzz in the music industry with the release of her debut album, Straight For Your Heart. Having performed over 200 dates on the road since 2006, Sarah is winning over audiences in cities all over America with her catchy tunes and charming personality.

Maze Records in Nashville, TN proudly presents to mainstream music a fresh, new sound with Sarah Peacock. Fusing memorable Beatle-esque melodies with powerhouse vocals reminiscent of Heart’s Ann Wilson, you will find it hard to believe such a big sound coming from such a little person. Her most recent performances promoting the release of her album have received excellent reviews from music industry publications.

ALYSE BLACK

“Fans adore her smooth, come-hither voice and cleverly spun lyrics... Like a sonic speedball, her smooth-as-butter jazz sensibility mixes with her frisky, spirited voice to produce one helluva listening high.”
San Antonio Current

“Her voice is captivating: rich and velvety in the lower, quieter sections; clean, articulate, and never shrill or nasal in the upper range and in loud passages…and always with dead-on pitch!”
103.1 KCDA in Spokane, WA – Live Review

“Alyse hits home with every track enough to mesmerize a person... The music of Alyse Black transcends all genres, demographics and more... My audience is always hinged for more!”
KRIM-FM 96.3 in Payson, Arizona

With a crimson silk voice set to deceptively lovely pop tunes, Alyse Black embodies the red-headed siren singer-songwriter. Drawing on a wide variety of influences, from Bjork to Billie Holiday, from Tom Waits to Tori Amos, from Piaf to Portishead, Alyse creates a delicate world of bright colors and lilting pleasure – creating a “hazy rose-hued state of mind where sensuality is key and reality is just a dirty word.”
Alyse’ alternative-pop sophomore album, For You, was recorded and produced by Ryan Peacock (Foo Fighters, Ra Ra Riot, Blonde Redhead, The Gossip) and is due out October 1st, 2009.  Her first album, Too Much & Too Lovely won 1st place in Billboard’s Annual World Song Contest in Jazz among many other awards.  In addition her US tour in 2008, Alyse performed numerous major music festivals around the States.  This year, Alyse will tour the US from August through October and Europe later in the year to celebrate the release of For You.

Alyse left a short corporate career to sing on the streets of Pike Place Market in Seattle. One day, the pianist for a local group wandered by, listened for a moment, and then explained that he liked her style. He needed another singer for a show that night at a local club. There was no looking back. From trekking in Nepal to road tripping the USA. From working for the US House of Representatives in high school to starring in musicals. Completing three degrees at the University of Washington, running a marathon, building an elementary school in Costa Rica, attending Barbazon modeling school, and living in France, Germany, Peru, Czech Republic, and more.  Alyse’ eclectic life is all fodder for her award-winning songs.

ALY TADROS

When Aly Tadros was offered her first paid gig, she had three original songs under her belt. The set called for two hours. She took it anyways.

"It's a lovely voice such as this so in tuned to one's heart"
- NPR Texas Music Matters

“Born to fingerpick and execute a perfect Cuban clave with her flamenco shoes.”
San Antonio Current -  Critic’s Picks

Spacious and melodic, salty and moving, Aly Tadros alternative folk stylings tempts each listener out of the vacuum-sealed sterility of every day life. Her classical guitar writhes on the floor of the mind, haunted by the honesty of her lyrics. Her influences range from the off-kilter Tom Waits, to the commanding Ani DiFranco, to the captivating Fiona Apple, leaving the listener to feel seduced, loved, left and wizened.  In addition to her influences, Aly is frequently compared with the likes of Rachael Yamagata and Jolie Holland.

Before flamenco lessons and tennis tournaments, Aly jokes that she first wowed audiences as a Cardboard Fish in a community theater showing of The Little Mermaid in her home town of Laredo, Texas. She studied in Spain, Turkey and Egypt in high school and marched on to study middle eastern politics at Sarah Lawrence in New York before dropping out to pursue music full-time, playing over 200 shows in her first year alone. Aly may have soaked up her eclectic guitar style from Mexico to Egypt, but her words could only be born from the most deep and quiet places within her conscience.

Aly’s gutsy debut album, Things Worth Keeping, was recorded and produced by Duane Lundy (Ben Sollee, These United States, Vandaveer) and is set for release on August 22, 2009, with a three month US tour in close pursuit. With so much under her belt by 22, this chanteuse is just getting started.

I've been meaning to start up a blog for some time now. With my first album & plenty of tour dates on the horizon, I figured now would be the perfect time to start.

I'll be tossing up photos & snippits of everything along the way. Hopefully it'll provide some insight, and a couple of laughs.
