Gallery marks 10 years in Pomona Arts Colony

A.S. Ashley, Correspondent, The Inland Daily Bulletin

POMONA - SCA Project Gallery will celebrate its 10th anniversary today by inviting the public to view "10," an exhibition by artists who have shown at SCA over its tenure with an eye on the future.

Ten years ago the Pomona Arts Colony had just a smattering of galleries, a half-dozen at best. With the current number of downtown art venues reaching nearly 40, one would think it would be easy to miss the SCA Project Gallery, 281 S. Thomas St., No. 104 - the underground venue beneath the historic Founder's building.

Quite the contrary, the SCA Project Gallery still draws large crowds during Second Saturday Art Walks with its innovative array of monthly exhibits and talented artists.

One of the benefits of SCA's underground environment is the immediate physiological disconnect that patrons experience when entering the gallery. This is why SCA features many installation shows, often encompassing the entire space.

A true pioneer within the Arts Colony and neighboring arts communities, SCA Project Gallery has managed to keep its vision fresh, attracting artists locally, regionally and from throughout the world.

Works for the "10" exhibit include individual artists from Pomona, Los Angeles and Orange County during the month of December.

***
The DPOA (Downtown Pomona Owners Association) has recently relocated its office to Second Street near Garey Avenue in the Arts Colony.

With the office now within the heart of downtown Pomona, the DPOA can better serve the community as an information and resource center.

And like so many small businesses in the Colony, the DPOA offices are doubling as an art venue. The DPOA will open its lobby during tonight's Art Walk with the premiere of the METRO Gallery, 119 W. Second St.

The METRO Gallery, in keeping with the DPOA's priority to build and enhance the downtown area, will feature and promote artists locally and regionally. The first show, "Locals Only," exclusively highlights the rich base of artists living within the Arts Colony proper.

Artists in the "Locals Only" show include Father Bill Moore, Kimber Berry, Tom Pathe, Juan Thorp, Max King Cap, J. Cheryl Bookout, Joseph Todorovitch and Joy McAllister.

***
A new kind of art venue is taking shape in the "West Colony" (the area of artist lofts and galleries west of Park Avenue on Second Street), where an empty lot just west of the Kitron building (500 W. Second St.) is being transformed into a mini-sculpture park.

It was Dan and Dina Romero, both participating in the sculpture competitions at Fairplex over the last two summers, who thought up the idea of bringing the many sculptures from the competition to downtown Pomona.

Through an agreement with Glasshouse owner Perry Tollett, Dan Romero was able to use Tollett's westside property not only to showcase ironworks in competition from Fairplex, but to establish a site where future metal sculptors can learn their craft.

The metal sculpture exhibition area will have its grand opening on Second Saturday today. "There is nothing like it in the Colony," Dan Romero beamed. "It's an ongoing project where we will teach, build and display metal sculpture of all styles, shapes and sizes."

Pomona's Art Walk takes place on the second Saturday of each month in downtown Pomona, 6 to 10 p.m. Closing exhibits are on display during Pomona's Last Saturdays Metro Night Out, 6 to 10 p.m.

For more information and to download a map of all the art venues in Pomona's Arts Colony, go to www.pomonaartscolony.com.

Pomona Arts Colony opens new exhibit season Saturday

A.S. Ashley, Correspondent

POMONA - September is traditionally the month of the new exhibit season, and downtown Pomona's Arts Colony isn't missing a beat this Saturday.

During the Second Saturday Art Walk, the 36 art venues in the colony will be in full swing with events and exciting opening exhibits.

Cherie Savoie, of Savoie Hair Salon in downtown Pomona, is launching the new season by producing "Futures," a hair show/fashion extravaganza at the multi-functional space called Night Driving, 296 W. Second St., Saturday at 8 p.m.

The show will include some out-of-this-world hair and clothing worn by 20 super-cool models "strutting their stuff" to the post-futuristic musical menagerie of Franz Keller.

At the dA Center for the Arts, 252-D S. Main St., patrons can view a completely different kind of themed art show in "Heavy Metal," an exhibit not directional in subject, but in material, where artworks are required to be made of metal, or have metallic qualities.

The dba 256 gallery, 256 S. Main St., will host an exhibit of works by Anna Marie Francesco, whose paintings embody bold and aggressive modeling of textual media that becomes wonderfully explosive and colorful at the same time.

57 Underground, 300-C S. Thomas St., features the exhibit "Form and Figure," the works of Mervyn Seldon and Yi-li Chin Ward.

Both Seldon and Ward are veteran members and exhibitors at 57 Underground, and the show seems perfectly appropriate: Seldon, whose paintings conceal forms within shapes, and Ward, whose figurative drawings seek out the shapes within the human form.

Another duo exhibit can be found at Armstrong's Gallery, 150 E. Third St., with simultaneous solo shows of two contemporary ceramic artists.

"Hello Chimera" brings the luminous and genetically altered animal figures of ceramic artist Molly Schulps. This unique body of work displays an exploration of animal sculptures and examines the continuous battle of "high-end" and "low-end" art.

"Clay Street" offers the ceramic social artifacts of Gerardo Monterrubio, exposing the various aesthetics and philosophies of Los Angeles street culture. Breaking through clich art and design, Monterrubio depicts monochromatic scenes of his own stories and imagination onto unconventional physical surfaces.

The SCA Project Space, 281 S. Thomas St., presents "The Great Divide" a group installation by six Cal State Fullerton students exploring the breakdown of the traditional family unit through personal inspection of a domestic space ... "please, make yourself at home."

Lucha Gallery, within Galeria Rustica, 320 S. Thomas St., is having a mouth-watering show called "Comiditas - An Art Exhibit Dedicated to What Nourishes Us." Here patrons can see all the yummy depictions of Latin cuisine, artwork maybe better fit for the eye than the stomach, but delicious just the same.

Bunny Gunner, 226 W. Second St., is continuing its series of exceptional one-person shows with an exhibit of paintings, monotypes, photographs, drawings and collages by the industrious Sioux Bally-Maloof.

Named "The WOW Show", it's the "wow factor" that Maloof wishes to exemplify from her life and world travels in this particular series of works.

The Blue Core Gallery, 558-A W. Second St., is also hosting a solo exhibit, "Mojave Motivation/Desert Wildlife," sharing the wonderfully rendered creatures from the arid world of California's desert plains and highlands by Chuck Caplinger, an oil painter of such deftness and style, you can feel the heat and the fur coming right off the canvas.

Description

The 11th annual Smogdance Film Festival with it’s tradition of showing independent films will also present an art auction that has an intimate connection with one of the films being screened at the Pomona Fox Theater.

Six prominent Downtown Pomona and Inland Empire artists will be representing the viable and thriving art scene in the area, and it is not by accident that a majority of these artists were involved in one of the documentaries being shown at Smogdance.

The project, TENTS OF HOPE, with the film entry "TENTS ~The Patchwork Project", a documentary by Francesca Roveda, is a film about communities gathering support for the people of Darfur, symbolically and literally.

Local communities across the U.S. raised money, purchased and painted tents in locations nationwide committing their efforts not only to a political cause, but in practical terms, allowing these tents to be donated to the struggling refugees in the Sudan.

Though our own local area artist’s segment in the film was modest, their spirit, energy and effort to this project was not, and again, these artists are offering up their talents and works to support Smogdance and raise money for dA Center for the Arts.

During the Smogdance Film festival, in the main lobby of the Fox there will be six artists displaying 12 pieces of art (two paintings per artist).

The artists participating are:

Fr. Bill Moore SS. CC., A. S. Ashley, Manny LeGaspe', Thomas Stubbs, Juan Thorp, and Alex Couwenberg.

The Silent Auction will last the entire three days of the Smogdance Festival with bidding closing 15 minutes after the end of the last film on Sunday.

Some of the artwork in this auction is listed into the thousands of dollars, but starting bid price on all works is 50 dollars each, with $10 minimum raises thereafter.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get incredible art at a bargain, and help support the dA Center for the Arts!

The greatly anticipated opening of the Pomona Fox Theater will present for its first truly public event since its restoration, the 11th Annual Smogdance Film Festival, bringing this dA Center for the Arts production back home to downtown Pomona.

This three day event, beginning Friday, April 24 will feature a broad range of independent films including comedy, animation, drama, documentary, etc., and what better venue than the Fox Theater to showcase these film makers and their cinematic work?

When: Sunday, April 26th 5pm - 8pm

Admission: $10.00 per night General Admission
$ 8.00 per night Student/Senior

Where: Pomona Fox Theater, 301 S. Garey Avenue

An "after party" will be held across the street directly following each night of films at the dA Center for the Arts Gallery which is located at 252-D Main Street where distinguished film makers will speak on various aspects of film making and specific Q&A on their films.

Silent auction winners will be announced during the Sunday "after party" at the dA after the Film Festival.

These events occur every "Last Saturday" of the month, and promises to be a great way to spend an evening in Downtown Pomona!

You can go to PomonaArtsColony.com to see which shows are running, and go to our "PRESS" link to read about some of the highlighted events.

Plus, go to our "EXPOSED" link to see a slide-show of the galleries in full swing during our March shows.

Read more about the Red Cup Society gallery tour here:

Secret Society Goes Public.......

They say, "Well behaved women rarely make history,"  but did you know that from the very beginning of time itself, one group of visionary (and slightly misbehaving) women have helped shape the very fabric of humanity?

Who convinced Adam that the "apple-tini" was a great idea?

Who dared George Washington to stand up in the boat?

Who whispered into Einstein's ear, "smart is sexy?"

and

Who told Lincoln that black is a very slimming color?

That's right, the RED CUP SOCIETY!

Now, the Red Cups have come to the Arts Colony. You may also know them as those "BROADS" (Benevolent Royal Order of Art Darlings). The darlings can be seen throughout the Colony, blazing a trail of interest and intrigue wherever they go.  They may pop up at city functions, chamber mixers, at a swank local watering hole, or the pancake breakfast at the American Legion Hall.

The "official" function of the Red Cup Society is to serve as an arts fundraising auxiliary, but their scope of presence is far more expansive. Comprised of vivacious, creative, energetic and (dare we say) HOT women of the West End, the darlings motto is, "It's not the size of your cup, it's how you fill it up."

Join the Red Cup Society each Last Saturday for festivities in the Red Cup Lodge, located in the basement of the dA Center for the Arts at 7:00pm.  Guided Art Colony Tours begin after refreshments.  You never know what you'll get on a Red Cup tour. You may be treated to an intimate interview with an artist at work on a new project, or an impromptu dance contest at the Farmer's Market.

The legend of Red Cup Society is as old as time itself. Rumor has it these influential ladies were even present when Christopher Columbus discovered America. One of the darlings looked over the bow and said, "Chris, this looks like a good spot for a shindig!"
