A MAN TO FOLLOW INTO BATTLE: INTERVIEW with TRISTON
interview by: Clea Cutthroat
Singer, dancer, and now...writer. Triston is one of Berlin's artist that is changing the underground art scene as we know it. Moving forward to the beat of his own drum, Triston is capturing Berlin art history with his "Heaux Confessionals" and read closely...
This is a man, and artist that i would follow into the front lines.
And my dearest friends, in case you didn't see the smoke in our Berlin sky-lines, we are fighting a battle...for freedom of speech
Alright Heaux, let's start with the basics. When and why did you move to Berlin?
I came to Berlin four years ago and like everyone I've met here then and since, I fell in love with the city. It spoke to me like no other place I'd ever lived in, and I've lived in several. Never before had I been somewhere that was so free, open, and alive. As an artist, I believed Berlin was the perfect backdrop for me to be inspired to produce. I had to have her. And like anything worth having, I had to be patient and fight for it.
Are you still happy in Berlin? What inspires you about this city to make you stay?
Even after all the struggles I have had to face in Berlin, I still love it. This city has tested my mettle like no other. But it's the underbelly of the city, the passion raging still, that keeps me motivated and driven to remain here. Without a doubt, I can say that every day I have been inspired in this city.
You are known in Berlin as a singer, dancer, and writer. Tell me a little about your artistic backgroud.
I studied classical music as a singer my entire life, and other forms of artistic expression were also studied, but they were always the backdrop to my first love. I moved to Europe to have the opportunity to explore and gain experience in areas I never had the time to concentrate on in America. Now that I live in Berlin, I am able to juggle my passions of singing, dancing, and writing at the level I aspired to. Only here in Berlin have I ever in my life had the time to study any and everything that I am interested in.
What inspired you to write the "Heaux Confessionals"?
The Heaux Confessionals began as a series of short stories and commentaries on life in Berlin and everything that I have seen, heard, and experienced. I became an unofficial storyteller of this group, trying to paint a picture in words to go along with the photos everyone sees in the magazines in Berlin week to every month. These are the artists presently in Berlin making waves, defining the times. Berlin at the moment is in its' second wave of emerging artists and these are chronicles of the era. Whatever type of an artist you are from music to dance to film, photography and everything in between, it is our passion, it's what drives us, it's our passion, but it's also a job. Through art and expression, we chronicle the times we are in. Whenever you hear a song, or read an article, or see a portrait, that artist is capturing the surroundings around us, which make up our world. By censorship, you are erasing or ignoring themes from a time period.
"The Heaux Confessionals" are published in a punk zine fashion. Whzy have you chosen this route rather than looking for the more traditional "offical publication"?
"The Heaux Confessionals" covers topics that many people would consider taboo or too risqué. Some of the topics are uncomfortable, but I argue that some of the most insightful moments of my life have occurred when I have been re-directed into destinations I never would have foreseen I would go. Everything is put on the table, and nothing is edited in terms of topics covered, whether they are my beliefs or not. It is the only way to truly convey the moment. It's uncensored, un-cut…the stories, not me! It doesn't not fit pretty inside a box or the constraints any publisher would likely place upon me. I've never been one to wait for someone else's opinion of me. When it's ready to put into the universe, I do it. Why wait for someone else's approval? You don't wait for someone's approval to breathe. And for me, this is my way of breathing.
Any thoughts of compiling "The Heaux Confessionals" into a book?
Definitely. If there's any publisher out there that's not afraid of dungeons, decadence, and debauchery…then by all means, contact me. If not? Fuck'em. I'll publish it my damn self. Why wait? It's coming, one way or another!
Tell me about being a black American male in Berlin. Is it much different to being a black male in the States?
In Berlin, I truly am a minority because there are very few black Americans in this city. This city is not so much multicultural as it is multinational. All of these nations are here but there is a lack of a true melting pot. There are so many Germans here that have never been exposed to anyone or anything that is different from what they are used to, and it makes them uncomfortable. I call it 'belligerent ignorance'. There are so many Germans here that haven't a clue as to what it is to be a black American. The only reference they seem to get from black American culture is rap music. But you can only ignore so much ignorance, so there have been incidences here that would be nearly unthinkable in my country but happen here on an everyday basis. Because every day, from the moment I leave my house, my mettle is tested, as I have to endure what is akin to visual rape on the train or racial slurs as I walk the streets here. It is up to everyone to speak out and teach those that don't know, because if you don't act, you are indirectly supporting the notion that it is acceptable to treat someone that doesn't look like you as an inferior. I didn't come halfway around the world to be treated like a second class citizen, and I, for one, refuse to allow it to happen.
When I first moved here I was shocked by the term, "black music", which is used to describe hip-hop/ R&B etc here in Germany. Any thoughts on this?
The term 'black music' can best be described as which came first…the denial or the accusation? In many instances, I feel like they want the 'black music', but not the black people that sing it. I may be black, but my music is not. Music has no color, and therein lies the beauty in it. The short answer is: it's rhythm & blues, Germany, not 'black music'. By categorizing music in this manner, Germany is essentially saying to people of color, "here, you can have this genre of music, but the rest are ours." The entire purpose of me living here is to delve into any genre that interests me.
So, we are in a gang. The Wonderheaux Nation...
Clea, I know that you want G-Unit like 50 cent, but girl, we are NOT a gang. A gang usually denotes violence.
Ok, I get your point :) I'll save my rap star fantasies for my next life...Now, why don't you tell people what IS the Wonderheaux Nation.
We are messengers. We are crusaders. We are soldiers. There is a battle being waged in this city, whether people realize it or not. The Berlin that we love today may be unrecognizable to us if we don't do something now. Every artist in this town has experienced, whether directly or indirectly, censorship at some level. To add even further insult to injury, asking us to omit or delete pieces of our material and then on top of that not pay us anything or far less than is acceptable? Is that the ultimate double fuck/pimp-slap combination or what? If you are moved by art, whether one way or another, at least you were exposed to it to make the decision for yourself. And that's what any artist really wants: to be heard. By denying someone that right, you are denying them of themselves. I've never set out to change the world. I don't believe in that theory. I believe that if everyone changed the world they directly live in –day to day- then the entire world would benefit as a whole.
What can we expect from you in 2008. Give us some plans for your world domination...listing of new projects, etc...
Every year it gets better here for me, and 2008 will be no different. There are bands to be heard, songs to be sung and stories to be told. Look for the Heaux Confessionals around the city, because there will be new volumes to come throughout the year. As the Godfather of the Wonder Heaux Nation, I'll only say that Papa's got a brand new bag! Watch out!

"HARDER, STRONGER, DARKER" with GINGER SYNNE
Interview by: Clea Cutthroat
Born and raised in East Berlin, Ginger Synne is not only one of the few female fire performers around, but regardless of gender, she is one of the best. A member of Hell Sindustries, and a founder of the Holy Strangers Artist Agency, I wanted to take a moment to get to know more about this fire diva and the reasons for the launch of Hell Sindustries's new anti-censorship organization.
So Ms. Synne, when did you start performing?
I started performing at 15, jumping into all the scenes, be it Goth, hip-hop, electro or rock. It took me about 5 to 6 years to fully develop and mature into my stage persona, Ginger Synne.
What artists inspire you?
Artists with fire in their souls, who keep fighting to have their message heard. I'm also fascinated with artists who explore the concept of duality. All things own a white and a black side. I try to use both. Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Kenneth Anger, Bjork, Pete Steel, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, and Busta Rhymes, just to name a few artists that I admire.
You use Marilyn Manson in one of your Hell Sindustries shows. What draws you to him?
I've always been so inspired by his visuals, lyrics, and his ability to combine so many styles of fashion in such a new, twisted-glamorous way. I like to think that from the beginning, I understood the message that he is fighting for against his whole country. His is a soldier, and so am I.
What attracts you to spitting fire? By the way, I loved the fireballs you sent down the catwalk at the Wild Girls show the other night.
Ah, thank you! But, what attracts me to fire? Everything. The heat. The sound. The danger. Fire is one of the most powerful elements that we have. But, for me, it actually doesn't feel dangerous, just warm. Dangerously comforting. I suppose I find comfort in the fact that you can never control the fire. You can never control me.
So, you're more like a fire tamer?
Yeah! Exactly. I just have this feeling on stage that the fire makes me complete. With the fire, I am my most powerful self.
Besides your solo show, you also work with Hell Sindustries. Why did you decide to join this performance group?
Finally, after almost 10 years of searching, I found two perfect stage performers, Killing Ira and Clea Cutthroat. We have the same will, power, and craziness on stage. The biggest thing for me is that we can communicate on stage without words, which is unbelievable when so many dangerous elements such as fire, blood, flex (angle grinder), and latex are all being used at one time. But, I suppose that is part of the magic between us. The fire, flex and blood add to our shows, but the special connection between us is what makes our shows unlike any other.
We also have the same mind, strength, and discipline. Ira and Clea each have a long history in performing as well, and have taken years to develop and grow within their stage personas. But, to be honest, our stage personas are our inner cores.
What do you think about Berlin's burlesque scene?
You mean the classic burlesque scene? Well, that scene died before it was born.
Oh Ginger, you really are a fire sign…Can you elaborate on that statement for me?
Well, I think burlesque should be a sexy, glamorous strip dance with a developed story that is performed on a high professional level. But, almost every burlesque performer I have seen, has disappointed me in their performance. On one side, their costumes were perfect, but then the choreography, if any, left much to be desired. Most importantly to me, there was no message.
Yes, burlesque is meant to entertain the masses, and I know that it empowers women of all body types to perform, which I think is great, but I see burlesque as much more than simply a platform for "feeling good about yourself". For me, it's a serious art form. I want to see a warrior on stage. I want to see this old art form thrown up to a higher level.
So, is this why Hell Sindustries is notorious for their "Fuck Burlesque" message?
Exactly!
What inspired Hell Sindustires to produce the Grotesque Gala last October in Kato?
We wanted to make a stamp in Berlin that underground performers are not only trash/shock artists. Underground performers are well educated, totally professional, using their shows to deliver a social and/or political message. The aim of the Grotesque Gala is to combine all these performers into one event.
We want to make an opposite message from the classic burlesque scene. All the performers involved in the Gala interpret burlesque in a harder, stronger, crazier, darker way…but have the professional chops to back it all up on the stage.
It is so important to us that every performer has the possibility to perform their complete show. No one is bound, or censored by rules from any sub-culture. All performers involved in the Gala are free to be provocative, authentic, sexy…all elements that make them Berlin's special dark stars.
Can you tell me about the new " free art", anti-censorship organization formed by Hell Sindustries?
In the last years, Berlin grew up so quick and we have so many people coming from all over the world. On one hand, Berlin has started to transform into a cosmopolitan city with lots of life styles, influences, and creative power. However, on the other side, there is always a structure system in all art, with big unwritten golden rules that I can't accept because these rules bind and gag performers.
We created the Grotesque Gala as a big strike back. There are no people allowed to be a judge over art. You cannot bind art into a package. Art has no boundaries.
What would be one wish that you have for art in Berlin as it grows in the city?
I wish that the dirtiest and darkest artist can sit next to the classic glamour artist, both equally supported. That there are more financial and promotional support systems to help artists continue to create and produce great art.
More support means more possibility.

"The hardest thing in the world to do Is to believe in something, Especially when the whole world Gives you every reason not to believe. Belief is a miracle."
-Steve Prefontaine
Ladies and Gentlemen, today is the beginning of the revolution.
It's time to act. To speak. To be brave.
It's time that artists stand next to each other, forming one another's backbone, even if they don't share the same vision.
It's the year 2008, and still artists, like myself, are still being gagged and bound.
I'm silenced in restaurants because a friend or family member feels embarrassed about me talking about my art in a public place.
I'm forbidden to perform to crowds who haven't even had the chance to decide for themselves what they think.
I'm racking up a long pile of shows that handcuff me due to their own short-sidedness and insecurities.
I am a woman. I am sexual. I'm dark and light. I have a brain, mouth, and ears that all function and respond.
I am an artist.
And why would art exist if the world did not need a reflection of itself?
Maybe you don't like your reflection in my mirror?
My art makes you uncomfortable, so you sentence me to death.
But who are you to be my ultimate judge.
You are no more God than I.
Silence is death my dear friends.
And I am not ready to die.
WELCOME TO THE ERA FOR FREE ART.
This anti-censorship organization is supported by Hell Sindustries, and all the artist that are involved past, present and future in the Grotesque Gala.
"This cannot be a team of common men, because common men go nowhere. You must be uncommon to be great."
-Herb Brooks, USA Olympic Hockey Coach
Today I am posting the first artist interview on the grotesque gala myspace site, which will also be the home base for the movement. I will also post interviews on mysite as well. Also in store for you are shirts, pamphlets, readings, sponsored events, and up to date information on what is going on in your Berlin artistic community.
Together we can take off the ties and give back the freedom to speech and expression that all people should be blessed with.
Scincerely yours, Miss Clea Cutthroat

" WHO'S THE QUEEN?!?!" Well, this is where the details get tricky...you got the Queen of England being bitch-slapped by Berlin's most notorious performance art gang... "Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way"
Well, it may be time for the holidays...but, there was NO holiday cheer for myself and Konrad Stöckel this past week in Braunschweig.
Apparently, Konrad and I are too much for the old folks, the yuppie moms, the sport-loving dads, and the angsty teenagers of this strange German town.
We were politely asked to leave. At least this time they used diamond encrusted cane to drag us off the stage rather than beating us with broomsticks...
...But, WHY ?!?!?!
The strangest thing to us, is that people actually find us all that shocking and offensive...so much so that we must pack up our props and leave.
Well, if you're wondering what all the buzz is about, you'll just have to polish and pop-in your glass eye and come see for yourself!
Next show is this Sunday (December 23 rd) in Hamburg, or you'll just have to wait till 2008 to get some more bloody action and nail-in-the-nose hammering good times.
2008: THE YEAR FOR FREE ART. FREE ARTISTS, AND FREE MINDS
I want to wish everyone a FABULOUS holiday season and happy new year...I gotta go back to America for a few days to visit the family (few days of good behavior...no blood, no milk, no knives, only sweaters and chocolates:) and then I'm back in Berlin to kick off the New Year.
Lots is coming up...so get ready!!!!!!!!!
...The GROTESQUE GALA will be returning spring 2008 to give Berlin another Bitch-Slapping good time!....
...Jägermeister Wild Girls at the ED HARDY FASHION ROCK NIGHT...I'll be rocking a solo number on stage for you fashionistas to "Fuck the Pain Away" :)
...HELL SINDUSTRIES will be at Tattoo Conventions, Motorcycle Shows, Fetish weekends and much more!!!....
....The GROTESQUE GALA FREE ART MOVEMENT will be in full effect..interviews coming after the new year
and

...but, some of it as top secret as Madonna's upcoming new album...I could tell you, but then she would have to kill you :)
So to all the freaks, preppies, geeks, beauty queens, rock stars, trust fund babies, fetish dolls, and drag queens that I adore
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
xoxoxoox!
