  BLEVE RECORDS NOT BACKING DOWN
Nashville, TN Sept. 21, 2009 - Amid calls and emails from angry firefighters, police officers and their families, BLEVE Records has decided to go forward with the release and promotion of "My First Ride."  This song, by BLEVE recording artist Ronnie Milsap features Trace Adkins and is the lead single from a multi artist compilation CD due out Nov. 1.
Independent American owned BLEVE Records stopped promotion of the single after German/UK owned conglomerate Capitol Records issued a cease and desist order claiming they had no knowledge of the song and ordering the immediate halt of further promotion or sales of "My First Ride."  In a legal document sent to BLEVE via email on Sept. 15, 2009, Capitol charged BLEVE with the "unauthorized use and exploitation of Trace Adkin's performance and name and dilution of the value of Capitol's valuable property."
Mickey Milam, retired Metro Nashville police officer and BLEVE President and CEO, states that this song was green lighted through Trace's management company and Capitol Records had full knowledge of the project.  "There didn't seem to be a problem," states Milam, "until this single started climbing the charts and garnering radio attention. "
Milam, a retired Metro Nashville police officer, started BLEVE Records to benefit the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the International Association of Firefighters' (IAFF) disaster relief funds. These funds, which aid firefighters and police officers and their families after a disaster or in times of need due to injury or death in the line of duty, were severely depleted by 9/11 and recent devastating hurricanes. The proceeds from the sale of "My First Ride" and the compilation CD were slated to help replenish these funds.
BLEVE has offered all along to pay standard royalty rate to Capitol Records for Trace's performance.   All artists/labels on the forthcoming compilation CD are being compensated for their performances.
"My First Ride" was originally planned as a solo song by legendary entertainer Ronnie Milsap.  However, Ronnie's long time friend Trace Adkins volunteered to lend his deep baritone voice to the project.
"Trace was gracious enough to sing on this song, not only as a favor to his good friend Ronnie Milsap, but also because he believes in our cause," says Milam.
"This is an important project on many levels," Milam says.  "This is the first major national fund raising effort that benefits firefighters and police officers.  These two organizations are renowned for their ability to raise money for other causes, but now there is an immediate need to help their own."  Milam cites the IAFF's recent contribution to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  The IAFF contributed over 28 million of the 60 million dollars raised for Jerry's Kids during the MDA Labor Day telethon event.
Milam states that there has been on outcry of support from firefighters, police officers and their families as well as members of the music community and fans of Ronnie and Trace.  From words of encouragement to offers of organized protest, the phone calls and emails haven't stopped pouring in.  Milam says, "I think when the general public hears about this, the roar will be even louder. "
Ronnie Milsap has never wavered in his belief that BLEVE should continue to fight this fight.   With Capitol's threats of legal action, Milsap counters, "Make me a sign, I will lead the picket line!"

Finally.  It takes the right chemistry on stage to create the perfect band. Personalities off stage are just as important as personalities on stage. There is nothing more un nerving than to be a front man and knowing that there are currents of hostility behind you on stage.  My current band, The Future Cats consist of Phil Ivey on upright bass, Ron White on drums, Jim Frank on Lead guitar, Mike Vincet on piano and sax and my wife Nikki Danby singing back up.  Everyone is like family, everyone gets along, and you can see that they are having a lot of fun on stage.  I feel so blessed to have this bunch of guys on my team, and to be able to do what I love with my wife as part of the show. I know many band wives, and I feel for them.  My drummers wife is at every show, and loves what we do, and is so helpful when we are setting up and breaking down.

Lots to be thankful for...

Hope everyone is great.

Copyrights in Bankruptcy: When Seven Is Not Your Lucky Number
When people think of assets, they usually consider their house, car, furniture, bank accounts and the like. But copyright owners, or persons who receive royalties generated by copyrights, hold a class of assets that doesn't readily come to mind as such because they are not tangible and tend to be forgotten. Yet they, too, become part of what is called your bankruptcy "estate." Get the details from legal eagle Gary Roth in this timely Songwriter101.com article.

Thinking Analog
Even if you don't own any high-price vintage gear, it's still important to think analog -- to create sounds in your studio that aren't just like everyone else's. By learning the fundamental who-what-where-when-why-how's of modern recording, you're aligning yourself with the great forerunners of studio sound, whose inventiveness and creativity helped make it possible for you to sound as good as you do on hard disc today. In the process we can gain greater insight into the functions of our digital gear, which, after all, is merely an updated version of yesterday's units. Get the inside scoop here from SW101 studio savant Dave "The Rave" Simons.

Piracy Deterrence and Watermarking

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 by Patrick Ross
The good folks at the Digital Watermarking Alliance have put out an interesting white paper titled “Digital Serial Numbers and Piracy Deterrence: The Deterrent Effect of Digital Serial Numbers on Illegal File-Sharing and Downloading.” Here are some highlights from their release:
The study, conducted by Interpret, aimed to determine whether the inclusion of Digital Serial Numbers (DSNs) in online content would deter illegal file sharing. The results showed that DSNs would deter illegal downloading among 33 percent of the 994-person sample and deter illegal uploading among 52 percent.
DSNs represent a new way to track media content by digitally watermarking audio or video content such as music, movies or TV programming with unique, imperceptible digital identification numbers. Unlike Digital Rights Management, DSNs allow consumers to freely access content and make multiple copies for backup use or for different playing devices. Should the content be used illegally, however, the DSN can be associated back to the original buyer.
It makes sense that DSNs would have some deterrent effect, and also that they would not have a deterrent effect for many. They make other claims, which are perhaps harder to quantify, such as a contention that DSNs would encourage more legal, paid downloads among consumers; decrease illegal downloading of music 40%; and decrease 45% the number of P2P users who share copyrighted works. I need to spend a little more time with the study and with Interpret’s methodology before I can fully embrace specific percentages like that.
What is clear, and has been clear for some time, is that watermarking is a valuable tool in a rightsholder’s toolbox. It is not a panacea for all creative works, but it has real value. I can’t speak directly as to exactly how DSNs are deployed across industries, but watermarking is central in visual arts, audiovisual works and other media.
Not all creative works are created equal. Some require far more fixed costs before deployment. Some involve more rightsholders than others. Some have higher or lower resale values. Some are easier to partner with non-digital revenue models than others.
Technology, at the end of the day, is an enabler. It can enable “good” things and not-so-”good” things, as President Obama stated the other day. Obviously, when it comes to technical measures to help ensure a creator’s rights, the more likely the technology is to disrupt a user experience, the more likely a consumer is to object to it. Watermarking has varying impacts depending on its form, but by and large it is not as disruptive as some digital rights management tools — the Alliance likes to emphasize that they do not view watermarking as DRM — but it doesn’t provide the protection that DRM can.
Rightsholders are experimenting in the market, trying to find the right balance of tools with the right balance of rights offerings in the right balance of licensing models. The varying nature of creative works, as outlined above, suggests we’ll see a lot of these various tools, including DSNs, deployed going forward.

Ronnie Lee...

It was wonderful to finally see you perform live.
You have such a natural ability to not only engage the audience, but make them feel like they are an important part of your show. The rapport you establish is not forced or phony, it's as comfortable as a conversation with an old friend, as vulnerable as confession, and as shamelessly sheepish as an invitation to dance with the homecoming queen at your first high school prom.
An audience not only completes what you do, it enhances it. Your showmanship, the connection, the music -- it's all enhanced by that bond your form, feeding off of each other.
You really do have the rough and raw edginess of Cash, the slick and sinful wildness of Jerry Lee, and the soulful sincerity of Elvis.

Thanks Randy...What a great writer you are!

We want to thank everyone who showed up at the Cross Bright Productions venue in Little Ole' White Bluff Tennessee.  We (me and the Future Cats) did a killer show (sock Hop) there last night (March 28th).  The crowd was smaller than we thought it would be, but still, we had a lot of folks who braved the tornado warnings late yesterday afternoon and made it to the show.  First time we played at this venue, and it was GREAT!  Wonderful Stage, Nice sized dance floor for the sock hop, and a wonderful house sound system with a great sound man, Tim, who owns the venue.  If you are a band in the area looking for a great venue to showcase in, or do a show, go to Cross Bright Productions (in my top friends) and check them out.  They are doing a vast spectrum of music from blue grass to metal.

For those who did not make it, we are booked there for May 1st,  (Friday) for another show there.  Put it on your calender and get ready to have a great time!!
