May you have the same sense of joy and happiness as the children at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School in Uganda , Africa . (Photo taken December 3, 2008 during the Christmas party at the school)..
We have just returned from an exciting, whirlwind trip to the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School in Uganda , Africa . And, although there were only four of us, we got a lot done! The four were Michele Costa, my daughter; Eileen Turcotte, from the summer trip; and AnnMarie Hanrahan Gray, a nurse from Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch . |
|
|
|
Here is what we packed into three days:
- Giving of a blanket for each child and staff member (almost 1,000 handed out individually;
- Five-year celebration of Sylvia's Children at the school with serving lunch to 1,000 children and their parents (GREAT rice … we are still trying to make it the way they do). This was a formal occasion with many of the local politicians present including the mayor! GREAT experience! And, the good news? Our school has a wonderful reputation for academic excellence according to all the speakers (as evidenced by the fact that one of the high level executives has all seven of his children there!);
- Moving up day for "Top Class" who will now enter P-1 (graduation gowns and all!);
- A parade through town (a band, ALL the children and ALL the teachers)) … everyone in town turned out to see it!;
- Diagnosing and helping the children who had been identified in the summer as needing medical help. Thanks to AnnMarie, one child has been cured of Syphilis and another child's umbilical hernia will be cured! (She was a wonderful, concerned partner in our desire to help improve the lives of children in Uganda .)
- Handed out 1,000 Christmas gifts to the children;
- Updated orphan files based on the graduating class of P-7;
- Saw the three acres we have purchased;
· AND, learned how to make Chapatti the African way!
Now that we are back it is time to start planning the summer trip. Here is how it shapes up. First and foremost, we are able to hold the cost to $3,500 and still give you a wonderful experience. In order to hold your spot, I am requesting that you send me a $1,000 deposit (non-refundable) no later than January 15, 2009 with the balance due by May 15, 2009. If checks, write them to Allen Consulting since they cannot go into our Sylvia's Children revenue – it is not true revenue and skews our IRS reporting on our 990's. If credit card, just give me the info and I will process through Allen Consulting . I know this is early but we need number confirmations to ensure that we control the airfare cost.
OK, here are dates and the schedule:
Leave NWK on Friday, June 26, 2009, arriving Entebbe on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Depending upon our arrival time, we will either stay near the airport that night or go directly to Masaka where we will be staying at the Zebra Inn. (We went and checked it out … UNBELIEVABLE view of the valley and they have verandas outside your room where you can sit outside to enjoy the view.) And, Internet service as well as WIFI. (If you are coming in from somewhere else – Washington, Boston , Iowa – the only other travel expense you will incur will be your airfare to hook up with the group.)
Here is the schedule:

FUNDRAISING
I don't think I have to tell anyone that we are in a tough economy … we all feel it; however, it doesn't mean we don't keep trying so here are several options for raising money to ensure we continue the quality education at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School.
1. This is an ideal time to make a year-end contribution that would provide for a tax deduction. If you wish, I have written a letter that addresses this that you can send to your friends, family and business associates. Just let me know if you want a copy.
2. It's holiday time and whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanzaa it is party time and gift giving time. We brought back some beautiful jewelry, made by the children, and we are selling it with 100% of the proceeds going to the school. We should have it up on the website by December 12. It consists of beaded necklace and earring sets as well as handmade (by the children) Beads of Life, which are gorgeous! Also, some baskets, mats, drums, masks, mobiles and a spectacular miniature nativity set made of banana leaves. The talent we continue to see is amazing!
3. It is also gift-giving time. So many of us have so very much. Why not make a donation to Sylvia's Children in the name of a member of your family or friend or business associate. It is a gift from the heart and provides a lasting, loving memory, both for giver and receiver. We send a special card to the recipient, telling them of your kindness and generosity. Any and all amounts are gratefully received.
CONCLUSION
Much to do but so much has been done. Thanks to the efforts of so many people – including you – we are developing an educational model that can be implemented in any third world area. We are going to have a chicken farm (food for the children and village a well as a learning/educational experience); a woman's cooperative that would help the widows, the school and the community; and, longer term, a health clinic that would serve the school and the community. Our goal is to make the school totally self-reliant by 2012. Then we can start expanding our reach and helping more children!
Thanks to ALL OF YOU for caring and sharing and giving. My very best to you for a Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year.
Please keep the children in your prayers. You certainly are in theirs. |
Sylvia's Children, Inc., 89 Middletown Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733 is a 501(c)3 charity where 100% of the donations go to the school. Administration costs are absorbed by Allen Consulting so your donation is 100% tax deductible. If you wish to help, just go to www.sylviaschildren.org.

Katonah woman has library built in her name in Africa
Danielle De Souza The Journal News
KATONAH - After visiting Africa last year, Vicky Tuccillo had no idea that it would change her life. In July, the Vicky Tuccillo Mbiriizi Library was built and named in her honor in Uganda.
"It is just amazing," said the 43-year-old Katonah resident.
She said that she first visited the country in June 2007.
"I was always interested in going to Africa, but I was very skeptical because I have two children and I did not know how safe it was," said the stay-at-home mother. "But then I met Sylvia Allen at a travel expo in 2006."
Sylvia Allen, 71, is the founder of Sylvia's Children, a nonprofit organization established in 2003. The organization supports the Mbiriizi Primary School in Masaka, Uganda.
"I decided to start the organization after I was adopted by the kids from the school as their grandmother," said the Holmdel, N.J., resident.
There are 907 children in the school from ages 4 to 14, of which 267 are orphans.
After realizing that it would be a great opportunity, Tuccillo traveled to Uganda for 12 days with a group of 12 and worked at the school taking inventory and getting sponsorship and funding.
"It was just great. I cried every day when I left because I missed them," she said. "Some of the kids are orphans and some have AIDS, but as poor as they are, they would only ask you for the basic necessities such as backpacks or paper. They never asked for iPods or Xboxes."
After realizing just how dedicated she was to helping children in Africa, her husband, Jeff Tuccillo, 45, donated $10,000 in her name to have a library built in Uganda as a Christmas gift last year.
"She was very much into helping children in Africa, and it was her passion," said the businessman. "I did it because I knew that it is something that she would love and it would mean something to her."
"It was a nice surprise. He has never been there with me, but he knew how passionate I was about this," she said.
On her second trip this past July, she saw the 2,500-square-foot library.
"It is a beautiful library," she beamed. "But there are no books, and we need money for books."
Tuccillo plans to go back to Uganda next June and hopes to do more for the school.
"People like Vicky and her husband are rare treasures," said Allen. "Their kind and generous hearts are greatly appreciated by the organization and the children at the school. They are making a difference."
Tuccillo said she is also looking forward to seeing the library filled with books one day.
"It is so amazing how we take these things for granted," she said. "Our children have libraries and we think nothing about it. These kids have no books, no library and sometimes no paper."

... hard to believe it is fall already! Where did the time go?
First, some not-so-good news:
Samaritan's Feet has cancelled their trip for November. According to his e-mail they were unable to get enough shoes and not enough people signed up to go with the organization to help us. He had mentioned that they would try in the spring. Of course, for those of us who worked so hard on our last trip to ensure that EACH child would get the right size, this is saddening. Also, I had hired someone to take the measurements of each foot and determine actual shoe sizes. And, lastly, Daniel Prins was working to get 2,000 pairs of socks donated. Let's hope that Spring becomes a reality.
Second, last call for the Christmas trip (leaving November 28, returning December 4):
Eileen will be going with Michele and me as well as Frank Dalotto and his wife so we currently have five. Frank is handling all the details for the trip ... airfare is around $1,900 and the balance of the trip is around $475 so it did come in less than $2,500. Make sure you get your Malarone and Visa. Michele and Eileen ... go for multiple entries - that's good for a year.
Third, our goal for just the orphans for 2009 is $80,100. When you look at everything else it comes to close to $150,000. Michele, Tony and I met today to discuss partnerships and alliances to see if we can extend our ability to raise money. If any of you have any speaking opportunities, let me know. I am going to put together a video/powerpoint presentation that will go anywhere.
Fourth, breathe a little easier as the rash of school burnings seems to have slowed down. And, special thanks to Eileen who is raising money to purchase solar powered motion sensitive spotlights that we will mount at each corner of the school and in the courtyard as a deterent to anyone intruding. We will take them with us when we go for the December trip.
The Back to school mailing went out Friday which is one of the highest ranking direct mail days for response rates. Please feel free to copy and distribute to your friends and family! Every little bit helps!
Thanks to all of you for your on-going concern and support ... every little bit helps!
Sylvia Allen

Here's the good news:
· The Vicky Tuccillo Mbiriizi Library was dedicated;
· The new well was dedicated with the children singing the words of Rudyard Kipling's poem IF;
· We measured the feet of all 907 children and staff so Samaritan Shoes can fit them with new shoes the first week in November (does anybody want to donate 2,000 pairs of socks to go with the shoes?);
· We inventoried all 267 orphans which meant taking an up-to-date picture, getting their accurate age and determining if there were any health issues (only 100 are sponsored so we still need sponsors for 167);
· Thanks to Joe Corpina, who came with us, we had soccer balls and basketballs for the kids to play with;
· Plus, we had large vinyl "bouncy" balls and a couple dozen kites thanks to the Kitegang (sorry but the thorn bushes got the balls);
· Vicky Tuccillo had even brought hula hoops (some of us remember them) and you should see how fast the children caught on to the way to do it;
· We did a complete inventory of books needed by the children and teachers (currently the children learn by rote and have no books) and found out that $20,000 would supply books (on a two children per book basis) for a full year;
· Thanks to Michele Costa (who will be going with me in December for the Christmas party – does anyone else want to go?) all the teachers got aprons so their clothes are not filled with chalk by the end of the day; · Lastly, Michele sent an American flag and a Ugandan flag. It was so wonderful to see those two flags flying, side by side, in the breeze.
Here's the not so good news and where we need help. In Kampala, approximately 100 miles NE of our school, there has been a rash of school fires (35 in the last 40 days), all in private schools. Some have been arson, some accidental (a candle or small stove), some have been the result of school rivalries and some have been vindicate. Whatever the reason it is cause for concern with the Mbiriizi Primary School.
We need to build a six unit building to house six teachers who would live at the school. The estimated price for that is $18,000. Tony Costa, my son, had a great idea which was to house the teachers, temporarily, in the library (which has two bathrooms and a shower) until we have completed the fundraising for the books. However, that is temporary. Tony, Michele and I would be devastated to see our hard work and love go up in flames. Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, Tony and I stayed two extra days to explore a coffee plantation and the feasibility of exporting Ugandan Arabica coffee to the U.S. Currently Uganda sells their coffee beans to Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia but do not have a U.S. distribution. We want to change that and have the profits go to the school. Anybody have any coffee contacts? Any and all suggestions gratefully accepted!
Finally, just a note on upcoming trips: ..
· November 27-December 4, 2008 Christmas party and gift giving at the school
· June 26-July 6/7, 2009 Annual work trip to the school and safari to Murchisson Falls (to see Giraffes and other wonderful wildlife!)

Hi, everyone ...
Today has been a little hectic since two of the travelers for the July trip have backed out. Erin is starting a new business and Eleni is having some health issues. The problem? We MUST have 10 people to enjoy the fares that Sally has so diligently gotten for us.
The following is an e-mail blast that will go out Thursday to the 9,000+ names on my Hometownnewsonline newsletter.
FLASH! If you have wanted to join us in Africa this summer and thought the opportunity had slipped away ... you now have the chance! One of our members has cancelled because of health issues and will not be able to go so we have one space available. Will it be you?
July 4-16 we will be going to Uganda, Africa to visit the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School as well as having a short safari at the end of the trip. The fee is only $3,500 ALL INCLUSIVE and I promise you that you will be loved to death by 905 beautiful children! Plus, it will change your life. Visit www.sylviaschildren.org then give me a call (732-946-2711 or cell 732-241-1144). Would love to have you join us for the experience of a lifetime.
If you can think of anyone who would like to join us, please send them this note with a little note of your own. Looking forward to July and THANKS!
Sylvia

Good afternoon all ...
Just to bring you up-to-date the following people will not be going on the trip:
Erin
Heather
Eleni
I am pleased to tell you, though, that Claire will be coming with us again. We currently have 9 and if you know of someone who would like to go we can certainly add another.
If you have gone in the past, you should have sent off for your Visa, gotten your prescription for the malaria pills and taken care of the insurance. It is just one less thing to worry about! For those of you new to the trip, you should be well on your way to being done with shots and should be able ot apply for your Visa end of May/early June.
I would like to do a conference call with everyone to discuss the trip and what we hope to accomplish while there. Which of the following dates work for you:
Saturday, May 10 @ 2 pm
Sunday, May 11 @ 2 pm
Saturday, June 7 @ noon
Sunday, June 8 @ 2 pm
Please let me know your preference so we can set this up. I have a conference calling service which we can use.
That's it for today!

Holmdel,NJ…MetLife Foundation recently awarded a Volunteer Ventures grant of $500 to Sylvia's Children, a 501(c)3 organization that financially supports children at the Mbiriizi Primary School, Uganda 25% of whom have been orphaned by AIDS. The grant was awarded in support of a project proposed by Antony Costa, a MetLife employee who volunteers with the organization. The funds will be used to purchase books for a school library at the Mbiriizi Primary School that is being built with funds donated by Sylvia's Children
The Volunteer Ventures program encourages and supports employee involvement at the local level in nonprofit organizations that work to improve the quality of life for all. Grants are made for specific projects in which MetLife employees have continuing involvement as volunteers
Sylvia's Children was founded in 2003 after Sylvia Allen returned from a humanitarian trip to Uganda, Africa. The children at the Mbiriizi Primary School "adopted" her as their honorary grandmother. Allen saw the ravages the AIDS pandemic had on the community and was compelled to help her newly acquired grandchildren. She founded Sylvia's Children to feed, clothe and house orphans in Masaka and provide education for as many children as possible. NONPROFIT SEEKS GUITARS TO BRING MUSIC TO CHILDREN IN UGANDA
Holmdel, New Jersey – As part of its continuing efforts to improve the lives of children at the Mbiriizi Primary School, Uganda, Sylvia's Children, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, has launched a drive for acoustic guitars. In addition to providing for the children's basic and educational needs, Sylvia's Children wants to enrich the lives of the children through the arts.
In June of 2007, Sylvia Allen, founder of Sylvia's Children, visited the school with a group of 14 volunteers, including her adult children Michele and Tony Costa. They brought guitars collected from the '07 drive and Tony, an accomplished musician and guitar teacher, provided music lessons to the children. The children were enthralled with the lessons; during Sylvia's return trip in December, they couldn't wait to demonstrate what they had been practicing. Sylvia's Children hopes to be able to supply the school with additional guitars so that more of the children can learn to play. Guitars in working condition can be dropped off or sent to Sylvia's Children, 89 Middletown Road, Holmdel, New Jersey 07733. Monetary donations are also welcomed.

Good morning, all ...
Look at the pictures of the well! Who would think we would be so excited about something that, here in the U.S., we just take for granted!
The library has been started as well as two double classroom blocks. We were able to send enough money for two double classroom blocks plus the desks.
The Grandmother of the Year award will be March 2 here in New Jersey. If you know of anyone who would like to donate a trip or tickets or anything for the silent auction, just let me know.
All of you have been so wonderful to make, and get, contributions for Sylvia's Children. A big hug to each and every one of you!
Claire, Sally, Tony and I will be at the Adventures in Travel Show this weekend, in the Africa row. Hopefully we will meet more wonderful people like the Tuccillo's!
Lastly, Joe has been working diligently on getting finances in order ... you will be pleased to know that between July 2003 and December 31, 2007 we generated over $180,000. Thank you - ALL - for making this possible.
That's it for now!
Love, Sylvia
