Current mood:  busy
hey folks!

calavino & i are opening up a new venture called Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites (see details below) in east atlanta on december 1st!

we'll be using facebok primarily (Urban Cannibals on Facebook) but feel free to add our myspace page (Urban Cannibals on Myspace) to your friends list. we have giveways and such planned for folks who put us in their number 1 spot!

peace,
dr

What is an "Urban Cannibal"?

Consumer of urban culture; the concept of urban dwellers creating sustainable cohesive communities through shared resources, talents and services. (e.g. urban gardens, neighborhood watch & co-ops, etc.)

What's a "Bodega"?

1. Traditionally, a grocery store in a Spanish speaking neighborhood that also esells authentic Mexican food. 2. Recently, any small grocer to the immediate needs of their neighborhood and its residents.

What is "Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites"?

A neighborhood general store located in East Atlanta opening on December 1st featuring organic, conventional and specialty foods & products
(e.g. Tide and Seventh Generation, Crest and Tom's of Maine), along with
artisanal sandwiches, soups, sauces and more. A "gateway" store for consumers who don't usually have access to or knowledge of sustainable and earth friendly products.

What does "We Serve People" mean?

It's an obvious play on words but it's also the slogan for the community service component of Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites. In exchange for volunteering for quarterly partners, customers will receive discounts at the store.

Our Mission Statement

As a society, the more urbanized we became the less self sufficient we became. Our rural kin built their homes, grew and raised their own food, used water power from local streams and rivers, made (and then mended) their own clothing, repaired their own cars and the list goes on...

As technological advances became the standard conduit for communication, food production and transportation, our reliance on others for service created a disconnect from our neighbors even as our dependence on each other grew.Recently, a renewed sense of community has evolved into a hybrid lifestyle of rural values coupled with urban sensibilities.

The result of this hybrid which we see in urban gardens, neighborhood watches & cleanups, and enthusiastic support for local farms and businesses has, in essence, created urban dwellers who not only feed off each other, but also fuel the growth of their communities by sharing their resources talents and services.

See you soon!
Calavino & Doria

hey folks-

just want to say a couple of things about the tickets, seating and general admission. these seem to be the questions that keep coming up.

1. There are only two tables of two left so, if you are coming and you want to eat at a table, please buy your tickets early.

2. General Admission = Standing Room Only

3. Single Seats are either at the bar (if you want to eat) or single chairs (if you're just drinking). But, both are limited so, please buy your tickets as soon as possible.

4. When you  purchase tickets via paypal using e-mail address doriaroberts@yahoo.com, your information automatically gets saved and sent so your name will be at the door. You'll get an e-mail confirmation, not a physical ticket.

The room is set up like Eddie's Attic or the Apache Cafe here in Atlanta if that helps clarify at all. If you're sitting at a table, no one will be standing in front of you.

ok, hope this helps!

hey folks-
as you know my wife has a new restaurant and she shares a space with My Sister's Room in East Atlanta.

we get a lot of calls from women looking for "My Sister's HOUSE", which is a homeless, domestic violence prevention and transitional shelter for women and children.

sometimes it's hard to explain that they have the number to "My Sister's ROOM". apparently 411 always messes it up.  headwall

some of them have sounded so desperate and incredibly frustrated that they have to make another phone call. it is heartbreaking to say the least...

after fielding these calls during lunch for the past two months, i came up with an idea to do some fundraising and possibly send in kind donations to the shelter on our behalf and maybe get the word out about the shelter as well (possibly lessening confusion for the women who need it as well).

so, we're going to start holding a flea market of sorts in the dressing room at the restaurant during brunch on saturdays and sundays. all $$ sale proceeds will be donated to the shelter and whatever is not sold within a month will be donated as "in kind" (i.e. non-monetary, usable donations).

we'd like to start this weekend end if possible but we need more donations and volunteers to work the space asap.

if you can do a 2 hour shift either Sat or Sun (11am-1pm or 1pm-3pm) we will feed you brunch. e-mail: calavinossoulkitchen@yahoo.com with VOLUNTEER int he subject.

we need for the sale (things that can be donated if not sold):
gently used women's clothing
gently used children's clothing
gentlly used men's clothing (small & med)

we want for the sale (things that might not be donated but will generate $$):
-all your cool junk
-no furniture please

in kind donations:
-unopened toiletries (at least 2-3 of the following - bath soap, lotion, qtips, shave cream, razors, etc)
-unopened diapers
-cell phones (these can be reprogrammed to only dial 911)
-safe, gently used children's toys (please no toy guns, soldiers, etc)
-unopened packs of tube socks and t-shirts

the givers of in kind donations will receive a 10% off coupon good for lunch, brunch or dinner.

donations will be accepted at the restaurant 11am-3pm and 4pm-9pm Tues-Fri
please be sure to tell the person accepting them if it's in-kind or not so you can get your coupon...or not.  Smiley

thanks and please spread the word!
peace,
dr
