ELECTRIC SHADOWS

"Break the Rules" b/w "She's All You Got" 7"

Review by Lord Rutledge

In just a couple years' time, New York City's Electric Shadows have evolved seamlessly from fledgling powerpoppers to top tier glammy rock n' rollers. Their new single on Douchemaster is dated 2006 but could easily pass for 1974 vintage. Taking inspiration from the likes of the Stones, Flamin' Groovies, Slade, and Hollywood Brats, the Electric Shadows revisit the raunchy rock n' roll of the pre-punk years (pinched with a little Raspberries/Big Star pop flavor). Both songs prominently feature smokin' guitar soloing and boogie-down riffs, and subsequently exceed the four-minute mark. Singer/guitarist Murat, an obvious disciple of the Ronnie Wood school of cool, can flat-out play. Anyone who's my age or older and grew up on '70s rock n' roll will likely dig this pair of hooky, guitar-centric jams. Of the two, I prefer the B-side, "She's All You Got", with its poppy chorus and shake-your-ass backbeat. Neither number is as immediately catchy as "Star-Crossed Lovers" or "Secret Affair", but the choruses really linger in the old cranium long after the songs have stopped playing.

It's hard to know exactly what to expect next from the Electric Shadows. They've seemingly outgrown the blatant Boys thievery that characterized their early recordings - a development that will please some and disappoint others. This debut single does give me a small taste of what's to come, but I'm left wanting more. So hop to it, fellas. Make some more records!

MAXIMUMROCKNROLL Issue #280 September 2006

This NYC band appears to be cut of the same fashionable, no-chops cloth as the many other recent power-pop revivalists.  Trouble is that they fucking pull it off big time, so wipe whatever smirk you've had building off yer face.  "Break the Rules" willingly falls head first into the glam leanings of the genre, and they seem more than at ease letting things go there (look at the sleeve of you have any doubts).  "She's All You Got" is the true hit though, beginning as a spot-on homage to the Only Ones and finishing off as rockin' as any Real Kids hit.  The b-side alone is worth the price of admission.  Much, much better than I thought it would be and a must for unashamed power-pop freaks.

THE SOUND OF THE CITY: NEW YORK'S ELECTRIC SHADOWS BRING THEIR PUNKISH POWER POP TO WORMTOWN

by Brian Goslow

I never bought into the idea you had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to put together a video to market a band's image to the world and one new act – to Wormtown anyways – who proves that fact is The electric shadows, who'll be making their Worcester debut this Saturday night (May 13) as part of the 10-band punk rock extravaganza at the ITAM Club. Hop onto their MySpace site and you're greeted by a shot of guitarist Murat dressed in a Beatlesque – Flamin' Groovies shirt, Beatles bands, and holding a guitar in a way that shows he's singing his heart out – and that's before "Secret Affair" recorded live on legendary non-commercial broadcaster WFMU comes screaming through your speakers as if it was a piece of vinyl from the power pop era of the late '70s and early '80s.

"Star Crossed Lovers" sounds like a great lost Bomp Records 45, clanging guitars as well as the Clash's "1-2 Crush on You" 45 that's joined by a picture of the band looking like the aforementioned Groovies or The Barracudas – speaking of whom, the opening drums of "Operator" could be taken from that band's "I Wish It Could be 1965 Again" (or "Brickfield Nights" by the Boys, who they list amongst their influences) – but since they hail from New York City, it's more likely a tribute to Veronica Spencer and the Ronnettes' "Be My Baby."

The last sound samples comes is their version of The Only One's "Another Girl, Another Planet" – and anyone using a reference point like that can't help but endear themselves to fans of the Wormtown garage rock sound. I can't help but think a bill of these guys and the Crybabies would be amazing.

Knowing there's a good number of Wormtown rockers who wouldn't want to miss their ITAM appearance because they didn't even know about it, Wormtown.org sent down an urgent email to NYC to have guitarist/vocalist Murat introduce us to The electric shadows.

WORMTOWN.ORG: Give us a little history of the band – it would be easy to think a band filled with so many musical (and fashion) references to the best rock 'n' roll of the '60s and '70s and early '80s (especially the Bomp Records sound, Flamin' Groovies, and Barracudas) would be pushing 50 but that doesn't look to be the case from your pictures …

MURAT/electric shadows: Well we've been friends for a long time - we all grew up on punk rock and slowly went back and discovered its origins, since we've all loved stuff like the Stones and Beatles and The Who since being kids - started jamming, everything clicked, yadda yadda yadda here we are today.

WORMTOWN.ORG: Who are the bands you guys originally bonded over?

MURAT/electric shadows: The Boys, Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, Dictators, Chuck Berry.

WORMTOWN.ORG: It's hard to find bands listing the Boys, Only Ones, Groovies, Slade, and T-Rex amongst their references. How did you discover all this great stuff?

MURAT/electric shadows: We always had a desire to dig deep and find good rock 'n' roll!

WORMTOWN.ORG: Swell Map Nikki Sudden who recently passed away was also on your list…

MURAT/electric shadows: Yes, his music is a great influence on us (especially Jacobites and his solo work), and we had the honor of befriending him and playing a show with him just before his untimely passing. We still can't get over the loss...

WORMTOWN.ORG: What's the audience response been for you down in New York City, where you would have been right at home amongst the original CBGBs and Max's Kansas City band's of the mid-1970s?

MURAT/electric shadows: Pretty good - though it's always better out of town (especially the West Coast and Atlanta) because there's so much going on in NYC, this town is fuckin' spoiled!

WORMTOWN.ORG: What are some of the best gigs you've played and bills you've been on?

MURAT/electric shadows: Opening for Nikki Sudden, Peter Case and Jack Lee of the Nerves, playing with the Nice Boys in Portland, and any show with the Stalkers!

WORMTOWN.ORG: Being on The Douche Family record label suggests the major companies aren't as enthusiastic about your music as I am … or am I mistaken?

MURAT/electric shadows: Well we've had some interest that went nowhere. As soon as our first record comes out within a couple of months, we'll wait for the action...

WORMTOWN.ORG: My guess is you'll be hitting us with your dozen best songs when you play Worcester – what should we expect to hear?

MURAT/electric shadows: Songs from our MySpace, the songs from our debut 7" coming out very soon, a few new songs, a couple of covers - we take requests, ha ha. Come and find out!

WORMTOWN.ORG: Hope you like diner food – you'll be playing in a neighborhood filled with them!

MURAT/electric shadows: We fuckin' LOVE diner food. If I would've known we would've played Worcester sooner.

Catch The electric shadows (along with The Commandos, Classic Ruins, The Numbskulls, Red Invasion, Shredding Shoes, The Downright Creepies, The Automatons, The Stalkers, and Public Uproar this Saturday at the Italian-American Club (ITAM), 14 ITAM Court (off Shrewsbury and East Central Street behind D'Errico's Market, Worcester. The all-ages show is slated to start at 4 p.m. and admission is $10 for 10 bands.

You can hear the magic of The electric shadows for yourself (and see a video from a recent show in Hollywood, California) at http://www.myspace.com/electricshadows
