Hi Everyone-

Here is an article in the DCist, a very popular site.  A special thank you to writer Sriram Gopal for his write-up.

Hi Everyone-

It is with a very heavy heart that I must pass along some information about our dear friend, Padma Soundararajan's family. They had been visiting India for the past month, and a few days ago they were involved in a car accident. Tragically, Padma's Father, her step-mother, and her two beautiful little sisters, Priya and Lakshmi, were all tragically taken from us and passed away.

Her two little brothers were also in the car accident, and one came out of the accident unscathed, and the other still hasn't woken up in an I.C.U. in a rural town in India. He has suffered head trauma, and the outlook on him is unclear. Both of these brothers have very special needs (one has cerebral palsy and the other has autism), and will require a lot of medical attention once back in the States. There was also no will left behind, so it will be up to the State to divy up any funds possible (and we all know how long this may take). Also, it is unclear how much insurance money she will actually receive once the house/loans have been paid for. There is also the possibility that a lein has been taken on the house, as well as other financial burdens which may extremely diminish all available funds. In fact, there is a sizeable possibility that Padma will get nothing.

Basically the unthinkable has happened to the sweetest, most loving girl that I (or any of us) know in the entire world, and it is up to her friends to help her pick up the pieces. Yesterday, my mother and I dropped off Padma and Ramtin (he, with the giant heart that he has, immediately said he would accompany her) at the airport to go to India to identify the bodies, get them cremated, and pick up the brothers to bring them back. This is a process that will take some time. In that time, the rest of us need to raise as much money as possible, because when Padma returns, there will be an abosulutely enormous task ahead of her, both financially and emotionally.

I understand that not a lot of us make a lot of money, but anything that anyone can give will really go a long way for the medical expenses for the boys. There will also be a couple different benefit concerts (her dad was a world-traveling classical Indian singer, and taught her everything she knows). Details on these benefits will come out soon, once we have a chance to plan them a little more. Padma, Ramtin, Dave Garber, and myself's band, Drop Electric, will be doing various fundraisers in and around the city, as well as down in St. Mary's, and we will keep you posted on those. As for right now, our July concerts are cancelled, and our great friend, Marianna Di Meo has said that she will step in for Padma for our August shows (at this point, it is safe to say that all of those shows will be fundraisers, with all of the money going to aid Padma).

Checks made out to Padma Soundararajan may be mailed to my house:

On behalf of the whole Drop Electric crew I wanted to thank all those who came out to Rock and Roll Hotel last Saturday night and gave us your attention and positive energy. It was great to see such a diverse crowd of people packing the place all to contribute to Empower DC! (www.empowerdc.org) . The show actually turned into a Bhangra bash for a couple of songs!

Also, I wanted to personally thank all the people who LISTEN to the music and send us such thoughtful messages everyday. To be honest, it is because of your support that talent buyers and festivals have found us and invited us to play their shows. It is because of your support that any of this music is possible.

Lastly, much respect to Son of Nun, v:shal kanwar, and Damn Right! for blessing the crowd with their incredible music. Please check out all these acts!! You will see why we love them so much!!
