I've really gotten into Kingskin this past year or so as they're one of the best bands in Kent (UK) at present. Their fusion of grunge and jazz is pretty addictive and the reason why I had these guys on the first gig of 2009 I promoted. With their second album 'Slug' having been recently released I decided Kingskin had to be featured in Street Voice. Here's what they had to say for themselves.

Street Voice: First off can you introduce yourself to our readers please?

Chris vocals, Jak guitars, Trevor Bass, Russel drums and together we are…Kingskin! scuzzy rock band from kent.

Street Voice: Who and what inspired you to pick up your instruments and start a band?

That bit at the end of back to the future where marty mcfly plays guitar and saves the day! Yep we all wanted to do that!

Street Voice: You've just recently released your second album 'Slug' through Sounds Of Caligula records so how did that deal come about?

We had Rock mogul entrepenuer Hugh Gilmoure on board to do the artwork for slug. But he liked the album so much he offered to release us on his label Sounds of Caligula. It’s a cool label with some cool heavy bands.

Street Voice: How did you manage to get Mr Albini involved?

Obviously Steve has recorded some of the best rock records in history, so it was always a dream to work with him. We just got in touch and sorted it. We do everything ourselves, 100% DIY.

Street Voice: Where do you get the ideas for the lyrics?

A lot of the lyrics for slug were inspired by people and things that have happened to us over the last few years. We have been together as a band for quite awhile so there were lots to draw from.

Street Voice: How pleased were you with the finished product? In hindsight are there any changes you would have made?

We only had a limited time in the studio so we new whatever we came out with we would have to live with. But we are so happy and proud with this record there is nothing we would change about it. The experience has influenced how we will make records in the future, our first record ’rhyme for smalltime’ took ages to complete, we were endlessly tweaking, trying to make it perfect. We had our backs against the wall with this record and it forces you to deliver.

Street Voice: Are there any plans to tour off the back of the album?

We have already done a load of shows. Next year we will be releasing a bunch of singles for download and will probably tour again in April.

Street Voice: Kent is a hard place to get shows forn original bands so is the reason you don't gig often around these parts?

When we first started we used to play kent all the time, but now we save the shows for special occasions. We will be doing our annual xmas show at the world famous jazz venue ‘the louis armstrong’ in dover.

Street Voice: What three bands would you like to play with and why?

Alice in chains would be lovely! Its the only gig we’ve all gone to together as a band and they were awesome. We got to meet Jerry Cantrell at our launch party, he was a really cool guy. A dream support for us would’ve been the clash, collectively one of our favorite bands. And Milli Vanilli.

Street Voice: I know you all like a drink so any good stories to share regards excess alcohol?

SLUG was recorded over new year in Chicago, we all went to bar called the hungry brain and got a bit rowdy. Chris was snorting tobasco sauce off the bar and Jak performed an improvised dance onstage at the stroke of 2009.

Street Voice: Aside from promoting the album what other plans do you have for 2009?

There will be a downloads in February and April and some festivals in the summer.

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

www.kingskin.com  check it out

Thanks to Kingskin for doing the interview and thanks to Quite Great for organising it. If you've not heard Kingskin before then you're in for a treat and I can safely say Slug is one of the best albums I've heard in 2009. This is one British band everyone should be checking out!

I spent most of the day wondering if anyone was going to turn up at the show as the weather was bloody dreadful. However come 4.30pm it died down a little so I headed off to the venue to meet the bands and only find Mike from CTCC there! My mobile went off at the The Casino Brawl were letting me know they were stuck in traffic on the M25!! I quickly put a plan into action where the support bands gear is used in stead of TCB's simply because they wouldn't have gotten to the venue on time.

With things moving a little slowly because of band delays etc the doors are finally open at 7.30pm!

Opening band and a late one added to the bill were Seven Year Kismet a kick ass metal band from the Isle Of Sheppey (OK at leat one band has to live there!!). From the moment they hit the stage they just tore into song after song and showed what a really strong band they are. The vocalist had a sore throat but that didn't stop him from delivering some decent vocals. The crowd seemed to like the band so all was cool there!

Next up were Thanet favourites Challenge The Chess Club. These guys hadn't gigged for ages and it showed last night in the perfomance. Both Luke and Hayden struggled on vocals while Mike was his usual crazy self on drums and vocals. Maybe they over rehearsed but they've had more convincing perfomances at the Westcoast? CTCC played old and new songs and their fusion of rock and screamo went down well with everyone who came to see them. The new numbers I feel are the strongest songs they've done so far and I for one am looking forward to hearing them when they find their way on to CD.

Come 9.40pm it was time for The Casino Brawl to hit the stage and what's more this Tyne & Wear HC band gave it their all from the start. They started off playing to very small numbers at first but three songs in and the crowd were back with a bang. The moshpit just exploded at the back of the venue leaving those to enjoy the band at the front of the stage. TCB played both old and new songs though the vast majority were from the new album. The sound was tight and the band just went at it like a psycho with a vengeance. The young crowd loved them and from what I saw I could understand why!

It's always good when there's a good crowd and last night's was one of the best we've had in recent times for Gig 4 A Quid. 108 in and the vast majority just going mental to what was on offer music wise.

Backstage the Casino Brawl were shattered but still has enough energy to have the banter with some of the audience. All good fun!

Thnaks to all the bands that played and the people for turning out to make it a show that will be talked about for a while for all the right reason.

Despite the appalling band name I really rate Mispelt(twopointzero). They play raw but catchy energetic punk rock and have decent lyrics too! After hearing their new EP I wanted to feature this Midlands based four-piece in Street Voice. At long last I've managed to fit them into Street Voice and here's what they had to say for themselves.

Street Voice? Who's in the band and who plays what?

Dunk: I play bass after a fashion and I do vocals as well.

Jen: I do the vocals squeaks and shouts I also run around.

Kev: I play the drums.

Steve: I play guitar.

Street Voice: You've had line up changes so you added a bit to your band name. Now you've made the point can you just go back to being the Mispelt pleeeaasseee?

Dunk: As long as our name change gets under your skin we’ll keep it! Ha Ha! Our main website is still the mispelt and in 2010 we will have had 2 years with the 2.0 tag by which time everyone will be used to it and we’ll go back to being the mispelt again…or maybe something else? How about Jen Tasker and the Worst Case Scenario?

Street Voice: You've now got Jen on board as a vocalist and by what I've heard she fits in well but hey is she any good at washing up?

Jen: Bloody Cheek! I make Kev do the washing up!

Dunk: Of course she is but we’re too punk rock to do the washing up preferring mainly throw it out the window, nothing beats the sound of smashing crockery but unfortunately they don’t allow breakable objects where I live!

Steve: Washing Up?

Kev: Yes she does!

Street Voice: Over the years I've heard a lot of unjustified comments towards female punk rock vocalists so have you as a band had any criticism?

Steve: I wasn’t convinced at first when Dunk initially put the idea of bringing a female lead vocal into the band but after the first practice with Jen it all clicked into place.

Kev: Like a piece of the jigsaw we didn’t know we were missing.

Dunk: Exactly! We have had nothing but positive feedback, but there again Jen is a very unique talent whose voice is more powerful than most of the guys on the circuit let alone the girls! Charlie Harper was full of praise when he saw one of Jens early performances with us. she remembers what he said better than I do so I’ll hand it over to her.

Jen: Yes he said that I’ve turned a good band into a great one!

Street Voice: You've recently released an EP so how has that gone down with your fans?

Dunk: Again nothing but positive feedback – even from you! HA HA! Junkfood Generation is my favourite recording to date, it was also Jens first with us – its also been our biggest seller and most widely played, its gone down a storm with our old fans and brought us a host of new one. Its done us and them proud!

Street Voice: Are there any plans to release an album in 2010?

Dunk: We WERE supposed to get a new one done by end of November 2009 the recent “Something for the Weekend” tour was to promote it – but real life and the clock has beaten us again so its been put back to early next year so yes an album is definitely on the cards for 2010.

Street Voice: As a gigging band are you finding more and more shows seem to be filled by people who will only give their mates band a look in then sod off elsewhere when they're finished?

Dunk: Sometimes if they don’t actually get to hear us play! We tend to captivate people and they stick around.

Jen: Yeah and if they do sneak off I fetch them back! A radio mic is a handy thing - I’ll lead people back into the room, get in their face and then dance with them ha ha!

Kev: Which is all very well until that bloke tried to grab your boobs…

Steve: …and Jen twatted him right round his face – he WON’T be doing that again in a hurry!!

Street Voice: Talking of gigs which have been the best and worst for you?

Dunk: Too many highs, Too many lows! Ha Ha – what makes a bad gig? You can have fuck all in the way of people there because there has been fuck all promotion locally but still have a blinding time (talking about the stoke gig with born to destruct and Kybosch) This is what I don’t get – venues that will pay actual money to put you on, you arrive and there’s no evidence that they are actually expecting you, no posters, flyers - nothing and that just seems a bit mental.

Steve: Best gig? Got to be when we played at CBGB in 2003. Bloody hell I can’t believe its six years ago.

Jen: There’s no such thing as a bad gig – its all good experience!

Kev: I’m with Jen on this one!

Street Voice: As a band how far do you want to take it?

Dunk: As far as I can until I’m completely bored of doing it but I’m having a better time than ever so I don’t see that being soon.

Jen: I’ve loved this band for over 10 years and I’ve been so proud to part of it for the last 2 – so I hope we take it as far as we can go!

Kev: We are only limited by our imagination.

Steve: Or delusions ha ha!

Street Voice: If you were all to be thrown on a desert island and you were allowed one item what would you take?

Dunk: A small team of experts working on new ways to be nice to me.

Jen: I don’t care as long as there are monkeys.

Kev: My coffee machine - as long as it came with an endless supply of coffee.

Steve: My guitar or my camera.

Street Voice: Are any of the band into politics on a local or national level?

Dunk, Jen Kev, Steve: Yes of course, they are a necessary evil, particularly when people exercise their democratic right NOT to vote then bleat about either the way the country is run or disturbing outcomes in the European elections (we could go on and frequently do).

Street Voice: Any plans for the rest of 2009?

Steve: we have a couple of low key gigs arranged to keep our hand in as it were, we are writing new material and gearing up for a big push next year, new album, new tours, maybe even a trip down from the frozen north to your neck of the woods?

Jen Kev: Definitely MORE GIGS!

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

Dunk: Keep checking our website www.themispelt.com which will take you to our myspace and facebook sites and will keep you up to date about what is going on with us!

Kev: That’s right check check and double check – you might have missed something.

Steve: Washing up?

Jen: EEK!

Thanks to Dunk, Jen, Kev and Steve for being good crack and making the interview a really good one to read. If you haven't heard Mispelt(Twopointzero) then I suggest you do. They're a decent band and going by this interview a good laugh too! It's bands like this that really do make the UK punk scene what it is today.

THE ACTION - Complete Punk Recordings 1977 – 1978: Damn this name is a blast from the past. I was given their debut EP back in the late 80's as present and I'm proud to say it's still there. The Action were a great punk band and if you love early punk then you'll certainly think this band kick ass! It's just a shame there isn't bands like this doing the rounds now as punk has become so diluted with too many noise merchants. This seventeen track release covers the bands first EP, a second EP which went un-released and a live set recorded at the Rotters club in Ottawa. There's also sleeve notes from Paul Fenton who was one of three brothers behind this wicked outfit. It's great that bands like the Action are being given the re-issue treatment simply because the kids need to know there's more to punk rock than Green Day and the Sex Pistols. 8/10

AMANDA WHITE - Toyshop: Amanda White is more well known for her ties to opera scene but this venture into the rock scene is a welcome move though! What I like the most about this release is that Amanda manages to incorporate the opera sound into some of her vocals. This works really well and makes Amanda stand out from many of the female vocalist in rock doing the rounds today. The music is also well thought out and not predictable which holds your interest. Some really decent tracks on Toyshop and some of those include 'Midnight Bride', 'Monica's Getting Her Tits Done', 'The Sky Is Close' and 'A Carol'. This lady looksand sounds the part. I love what Amanda White is about and you will too! 9/10

ANTIPRODUCT - Please Take Your Cash: AntiProduct are back with their new album 'Please Take Your Cash' which has to be one of the best albums I've heard all year. Alex Kane and co certainly know how to deliver great music and with catchy songs such as the opening number 'Surfin' The World', 'Best Day Of Your Life', 'Good Vibrations' and 'When We Find Love' I can't fault this baby at all. It's fair to say that AntiProduct are far from predictable and every song on this album certainly has it's own identity. Where these guys manage to find the inspiration for their lyrics I'll never know but I'm glad they write in the style they do as this what makes AntiProduct all the more appealling. 'Please Take Your Cash' is certainly in my top twenty of albums released in 2009 simply because the lyrics, the music and originality shine right through. If you're bored with what you're hearing these days then I suggest you give AntiProduct a listen. They will change your life!! Nuff said! 9.5/10

BEN MONTAGUE - Rainy Day: I'm sitting here listening to the album sampler which was sent through which includes Ben Montague's new single 'Rainy Day'. OK so this is a commercial pop song but you know what it doesn't matter smiply because there's something very warm about Rainy Day'. This is a feel good factor song which has brightened up this wet sunday morning with some great vocal delivery from Ben and more imprtantly the tune is well catchy. It's not often I get into commercial pop music but Ben Montague has to be checked out simply because this guy is the real deal. 8/10

CTRL Z VS THE FREESTYLERS - Ruffneck (Freestylers Get Reworked): I didn't know what to make of this release if I'm honest. I had to put it away and listen to this single a few times to get my head around what it is all about. It took me a while to understand what electronic punks 'Ctrl Z' are all about and now this release has hardly been off my player. The various styles of re-mixing was certainly interesting as they all managed to make 'Ruffneck' sound like a unique track. This is one release that will never reach the mainstream clubs but it doesn't matter as those people wouldn't appreciate what is on offer with these remixes from the likes of High Rankin and Pirate Soundsystem. If hardcore electronic music is your thing then this is something you need to check out! 8/10

DELANY - Blaze And Ashes: Delany is a brand project with well known musicians such as Lana Lane, David Readman and Davy Vain being involved. This eleven track concept album that I have in my hands is based on a Wolfgang Hohlbein’s novel 'Chronicle of the Immortal'. The scenes take place in London and are wrapped up in this emotional but powerful rock album. The main characters of the novel are represented by the vocalists on this release. Lana Lane and co really do this album justice with some spot on vocal delivery that really did blow me away. What they manage to achieve here is something very special and have done Wolfgang Hohlbein proud. However one mustn't forget the musicians who play their parts too! There's some excellent guitar work from Jamie Scott and Dano Boland. The guitar parts are complemented by some great bass work from Volker Leson who is also one of the songwriters on this album. Blaze And Ashes really is an interesting slab of music that many rock fans will love and I don't say that lightly either! You have to hear this for yourself to understand what is so cool about Delany and their album 'Blaze And Ashes'. 9/10

D.O.A. - Kings Of Punk, Hockey And Beer: While many British and European punk rock bands have and still sing about beer, football and punk rock it's good to see D.O.A. doing something similar. The album title gives the game away and while some are wondering if it works I can safely say yes it does. 'Kings Of Punk, Hockey And Beer' is a thirteen anthem fuelled album which is best enjoyed at high volume while supping on a case full of beer. For me this album is just full of excellent tracks from start to finish and so damned enjoyable too! Tracks such as 'Dead Men Tell No Tales', 'The Hockey Song', 'Beer Liberation Army' and 'When Power Came To Canada' are there to be enjoyed and why the fuck not? Sometimes it's great to let your hair down and this is one album that will sure get you in the party mood! 8.5/10

ELLIOT MINOR - Solaris: This album has taken it's time getting to me but you know it's certainly been worth the wait. On listening to Solaris I've thoroughly enjoyed the whole album and in my honest opinion it's better than Elliot Minors debut. The problem I had with was there were only four or five decent numbers and the rest were fillers. Two years on and with more experience Alex and co have written an album they can be proud of. Every track has been given an equal amount of love and attention which makes Solaris the album that it is. Opening up with 'The Dancer' this thirteen track classical influenced rock album just steams into tracks such as 'Electric High', 'Better Than The Courtroom', 'All Along' And 'Lets Turn This Back Around'. Everything is fine tuned to give you such a pleasurable listening experience and what's more this release comes with some pretty cool packaging too! Three years ago I said this band was something special and I still stand by that statement to this day! Solaris is a rock album you must own! 9/10

HOPELESS HEROIC - Mechanical Lions EP: Damn! I didn't know what to make of this band at first as they are a bunch of crazy assed guys. You're certainly treated to something different as Hopeless Heroic fuse elements of classical, hip-hop and rock which will just blow you away! They've already been getting lots of attention with some sell-out shows and some wicked airplay but you have to hear the magic for yourself to understand what all the fuss is about! The five tracks on here will almost certainly win you over and if they don't then there's just no hope for you! Favourite tracks for me were the opener and title track 'Mechanical Lions' and 'You Got What You Deserved' though the other three weren't far behind. Hopeless Heroic are there to be heard and enjoyed - Don't pass up on this five-track offering! 8/10

THE HOSTILES Always Looking Forward: The Hostiles are a Ska-Punk band from Ayr in Scotland who really know how to enjoy themselves. This ten track album is full of energy from start to finish with some catchy tunes such as 'Where Are You?', 'I Hope You Know' and 'Conclusion'. There's some great guitar and bass work from Chris and Joshua Barron. Onme can't forget the great brass section in which Steve Bruce and Lynsey Cowan hold their own. Oh and don't get fooled into thinking that the vocalist is trying to sound American - He actually is American! I like what I hear both musically and production wise. This also comes nicely packaged. The Hostiles therefore have to be checked out. It would be criminal to ignore this release. 8.5/10

JANA PERI - I Hate The Holidays (But I Love Spending Them With You): You can tell Xmas is just around the corner as the festive songs are coming at us thick and fast! Jana Peri has written a pop-rock number that is catchy and has humour to it too! In fact 'I Hate The Holidays (But I Love Spending Them With You)' is one of the best festive songs I've heard so far this year as many have been pretty lame which I put down to the artists trying too hard! I really like what Jana Peri is about and when you hear this number you'll certainly want to check out what else she has on offer. 8/10

MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA - Shake It Out: This is the latest single to be taken from the recently released album 'Mean Everything To Nothing' and I presume has been released in time to help promote their current UK tour which includes support slots with rock legends Biffy Clyro. This guitar band really have popped out of nowhere and one can understand why they're getting so popular with the high quality of music on this latest single which is just explosive. Their passion for great guitar music shines through with some great catchy guitar hooks complimented with wicked driving bass lines. Manchester Orchestra are going to be huge and this single is just the beginning. 9/10

MINGMEN - Back To The Ground: Female fronted Swiss rock band sent me over this eleven track album and this is one release that has been played to death. 'Back To The Ground' is one of those albums that once you start playing you have to let it play to the very end simply because you don't want to miss out on anything. I love how Sway sings - This lady just blows my mind with her vocals. Then there's the excellent music with some great guitar from Yas and JGeorge. Not forgetting some neat bass lines from Etienne. Between them all the Mingmen have written a great album and more importantly prove why they're one of the best bands to come out of Switzerland. I didn't get a track listing with this album but I can assure you all out there there's not one filler on here and what you get for your money is quality rock music from start to finish. 8.5/10

NOFX - Cokie The Clown EP: This EP is made up of five songs that couldn't fir on their recently released album 'Coaster'. While many bands would have used these songs as a taster to the album it was decided by NOFX to relaese them as an EP later on. What I'm holding in my hand is a decent release that many NOFX fans will enjoy as the music is great and the lyrics are spot on. It also sees NOFX deal with the internal side of the band  which many fans will appreciate as you only really get to hear and see the fun elements of NOFX. Proof of this can be heard on 'My Orphan Year(Acoustic)' which deals with the death of Fat Mike's parents. There's five decent numbers on here and not one filler so this is certainly a great listening experience and one which has been played to death in the Street Voice household since it fell through the letterbox yesterday, For fans of vinyl this EP will also be available as two limited edition 7"s. 9/10

SLADE - Merry Xmas Everybody (Party Hits): I bet old Noddy Holder must cringe when people walk up to him screaming out 'It's Christmaaaaaaas' but it's fair to say that Christmas wouldn't be the same without Slade. This twenty track CD will get everyone (including the biggest misery's) in the mood to party! All the faves are on here including 'Merry Xmas Everybody', 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town', 'Cum On Feel The Noize', 'All Join Hands', 'Do You Believe In Miracles' and 'Okey Cokey'. OK so there's the argument that these tracks have been released so many times before but I can't think of any album where all these songs are on together as one?! For me this is a wicked release and any Slade fan will dig this baby! We've already got in the party mood with this one and it aint even December yet! This is best enjoyed when played loud and you've had a few JD & Cokes. Roll on Chrimbo as Slade are back with a bang! 9/10

THE SPORES - News Weather And Spores: After twenty or so years these songs from the Spores have re-surfaced. These guys were one of the leading second waves punk bands to come out of Vancouver who were often compared to the likes of the early Damned and S.L.F. While I don't hear any resemblance it's fair to say the Spores were a pretty decent punk rock band. I used to have a couple of tracks on tape and for me it's pretty awesome that Sudden Death have released this. If you enjoy crazy assed punk rock then you'll love what's on offer here with tracks such as 'Holy Cow', 'Pervert Me', 'Meat Bi-Product', 'Up The Boss', and 'Oh Holy Knights'. Not only do you get a pretty decent punk rock album but this also comes well packaged too! 7/10

V/A - Mainstream Music Is Shit: TNS are back with a second compilation which covers a fair amount of UK Punk, Ska, and HC bands over two CD's. The first disc is made of Punk/HC Bands such as The Shadowcops, D'Corner Bois, Dangerfields. Hyperjax and the Great St Louis. The second disc is made up of mainly Ska and Ska-Punk bands such as Hrjam, John Player Specials, Stand Out Riot and Rasta4eyes. There's thirty seven tracks from thirty seven bands and like all compilations there's good and bad. However it's fair to say that TNS manage to release compilations that are of higher standard than most you're ever going to hear. If you want to know what's on offer musically on the streets of the UK then this release is worth picking up! 8/10

Chicago based rock band Soil came to Margate on Thursday 12th November and gave nearly three hundred people the time of their lives.

For me it started off at 7pm where I met with guitarist Adam Zadel for an interview. Adam was a really cool guy and we chatted about the band, the tour and of course the new album Picture Perfect recently released through the German label AFM. Once the interview was over Adam and I talked about the local music scene, the Westcoast and a vast array of stuff.

I realised it was time for the first band to hit the stage so ventured off down to the front of the stage. Sentinel delivered a half hour set of metal and screamo. This Margate band got the crowd warmed up for the other support bands The Defiled and Forever Never.

As soon as Sentinel finished their set I headed towards the bar as I knew the other support bands sound was a little too extreme for my taste.

After chatting to Carol Davies and Steve from Captain Mildred for the length of the two support bands it was time to get into position with my camera.

10pm arrived and it was time for Soil to hit the stage. The Westcoast was packed out and the audience were ready rock. From the moment Soil hit the stage they duly delivered a classic live set that included the classic Halo song. Throughout the set the audience were electric and the band fed on this to deliver one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen in Margate.

. Everyone including the band just had the time of their lives and last nights show was certainly one of the best things to happen in Margate in a very long time.

Cheers to everyone who came out for this show.

When I watch TV shows like X-Factor I sometimes worry about the state of music in this country. However when I come across artists like Ella Montclare all my fears vanish simply because there is a vast amount of talent yet to be discovered. I really like what Ella Montclare is all about so I sent off some questions to this trip-hop / soul artist and here's what she had to say for herself.

Street Voice: Ella can you introduce yourself to our readers please?

I'm Ella Montclare a English, Bajan, and Spanish singer-songwriter from County Durham, now living in West London. My music is trip-hop beats and vocal sweets confess soaring tales of love and melancholy. Someone more sensible than me described it as Massive Attack meets Sade meets Prince. Quite a threesome hahaha.

Street Voice: What inspired you to combining the trip-hop. soul and pop genres in to your music?

Artists my mum used to play like Kate Bush, Joan Baez, Chakka Khan and Aretha Franklin. And then later, Massive Attack, Portishead, Dr Dre, and J-Z when i was in my angry and melancholy teens!

Street Voice: Between Islands was a brilliant debut so how did that go down with music fans and the press?

I still can't believe how well received 'Between Islands' was. We did a limited digital release of a 1000 copies and they sold out within a week!

Street Voice: In hindsight would you have made any changes to the song?

Hmmm interesting question. Actually I have some hella sick remixes of 'Between Islands', one of which will definitely be on my album. It takes the song to another level.

Street Voice: You have your second single 'I Surrender' out at the end of the month so are you looking forward to the release?

Yeaaaah man. I've been writing and recording this album for what feels like a lifetime. I can't wait to release 'I Surrender', especially as I'll be doing a live tour to promote it.

Street Voice: Are there any plans to play and shows to promote the single?

Hahaha I just answered that question! Me and my band will be doing a few London gigs before the New Year and then touring around the UK and beyond in 2010.

Street Voice: So when is your debut album going to be released?

February 2010. And I'll be doing a limited edition pre-release before the end of the year for all my myspace friends who have been so patient with me.

Street Voice: You've worked with some fine American hip-hop artists so how did you get to meet them?

Well I auditioned for Dr Dre in Los Angeles and ended up working with Aftermath Records the same day! 'I Surrender' was recorded with Steve 'B' Baughman who engineers most of the Aftermath releases. All the music I am totally in awe of from Eminem to 50 Cent and, of course, Dr Dre.

Street Voice: You have an amazing voice so do you think sometimes things may run a little too slow for you considering the mount of rubbish that hits our charts week in week out?

I hope not!

Street Voice: As a newish artist do you think labels should be taking more risks instead of playing it safe?

Yes! And they have to now, because of all the music that's emerging independently via the internet.

Street Voice: Out of curiosity how does one get to date you?

Hahaha even I don't know the answer to that. It's all about chemistry!

Street Voice: What plans do you have for the rest of 2009?

I've got some live gigs coming up, watch out for the dates at www.myspace.com/ellatrip  and www.facebook.com/ella.montclare . Plus I'll be going to San Francisco to record with one of my favourite and one of the greatest producers in the world. Watch this space!

Street Voice: Anything you'd like to add?

Say hello online or at one of my gigs!

Thanks to Ella for doing the iinterview and Kate at Quite Great PR for arranging it. Ella shortly has a new single out very soon. Forget the rubbish you hear on X-Factor - I reckon you ought to give Ella a listen as 'I Surrender' is a cracking release. You'll soon realise where Britain's talent lay instead of tuning into reality TV shows to discover the next big thing!

A Day Of 2-Tone - Westcoast Bar/Specials - Margate - Sat 7th Nov 09

After the friday night gig I was looking forward to a day of ska at the Westcoast and more importantly how I was going to feel about seeing the reformed Specials as I'd seen them first time around.

At 12.30pm I set off home and headed towards Margate where the first port of call was the art gallery to see the 2-Tone exhibition which was set up by the original 2-Tone designer Jon Sims.

There was some great stuff at the gallery and it awesome to chat to Jon about his work. Certainly worth a visit if you're around Brighton and Coventry over the coming weeks. To check out Jon Sims site please go HERE.

Soon I headed off to the Westcoast where the DJ's Lee and Toast were setting up.

As you can see Lee was trying to look hard outside and failing miserably!! Damn that granny with half her teeth missing and the other half black was more scary! In fact she curdled my beer!!!

Around 3pm the Westocoat started filling up to the point of capacity. In fact some people just stood outside. It was easier there!

Throughout the day Lee and Toast played some great tunes and many people looked as if they were enjoying themselves. No one tried hanging the DJ's so that was a good sign though I'm sure if they had tried to have hung Toast his body weight would have snapped the noose anyway!! Some one needs to get down the gym!!!

Around 3.30pm I was still waiting on Michelle so we could eat. Damn I was that hungry I was going to phone Bob Geldof to do a charity show for me! I knew I should have eaten something earlier but hey the bar was open and therefore the lager had to be supped just in case it went off!!! That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!!

I also met Julie (who's on my facebook thingy) and her fella. Also bumped into a couple of AFA lads who I hadn't seen since the early 90's. That was good.

Oh and what was Andre thinking when he got me in a red wine spritzer?!!! It was awful and I should have just tipped it over his head!!! Not only is he a poor sound engineer he aint got a clue about drinks either!!!

Michelle turns up and then the food was ordered. Veggie curry with rice n peas. Oh yes! The food didn't touch the sides. Bob I'm OK now. I'm full!!

Eli booked in TooT'n'Skamen who are a ska covers band. They were energetic enough but not really my thing. More a pub covers band than a venue band but the crowd seemed to enjoy what was on offer and quite a few were dancing. I checked out about half hour of their set before returning upstairs.

The bar just seemed to be getting more packed as time went on and many even stayed downstairs in the venue which was probably a good move. Still you had to be by the Lee and Toast to appreciate the fun they were having. Listening to them reminded me of those two old men on the Muppet show!! Damn they don't half go on!!

Outside I bump into more people and head off to Barnicles for a couple with Kappa and his mate. Why we were standing outside is anyones guess? It was bloody freezing at that point! I had a Polish geezer try and sell me a ticket but I pointed over to one of Neville Staple's road crew and told the Polish guy that he wanted one so off he went chasing him down the road. That had everyone laughing outside.

Soon it was time to head off up the Winter Gardens where we arrived just in time to see Pama International. They played a decent set of Ska and Dub. Some of the crowd appreciated what they were hearing so that was all good. Others hated them. A marmite band I guess!

However what the hell were the Winter Gardens thinking? They really hiked up the prices of the drinks last night which really really pissed me off! Nearly £5 for a bottle of Magners yet the other week at ther Bowling For Soup show I was only paying £3.60. Even cheekier when I politely asked for some ice the bar person told me 'Put your own fucking ice in!'. This skinhead standing next to me choked on his beer! I wasn't fucking amused at that!

Still things did get better in the toilets when some guy shit his pants. I've never seen so many people trying to get out the toilet all at once. My sense of smell is bad but christ you could smell it outside!! I presume the last one out was the offender!! He looked really embarrassed.

Bumped into a few more people I hasn't seen in a while. One geezer and his wife I hadn't seen since we did the Oi Polloi live album back in the early 90's. We laughed about that time it kicked off in Edinburgh with some football hooligans. I managed to borrow one of theri girlfriends for the night which didn't go down too well. Still we all saw the funny side in the end and had a few beers with the hoolies.

Soon it was time for The Specials to hit the stage and I was curious to what they would be like. For me it wasn't like the early days when it was fresh and their was tension in the air. It was all a bit too civillised both band and crowd wise. For me the rougness of the early days was missing from the Specials. I tried to get into into but I'm not really that big on nostalgia but the vast majority seemed to enjoy what they saw.

A big two fingers up to the security guy who threw water at me - Tosser!

About a hour into the set I had enough and headed off back down to the Westcoast where a few more drinks were poured down my my throat. Oh yes!

Thirty minutes later and Toast and Lee were back to do their stuff for the aftershow party and kept the buzz in the air with some great tunes being played.

Come midnight it was time for Neville Staple to do his stuff. I was just expecting to play a few records but the guy actually sung as his mate spun the music. Top stuff from a man who just played for a hour and a half up the road. Totally enjoyed what Neville did. This was the best part of the day for me.

The crowd were great too and loved what Neville did. For them what Neville did was a nice touch and more importantly the crowd interaction was there which was missing from the Specials show.

Later on I was on the door when some woman came up to me and said one of Aswad wanted to coem in for free. I replied 'Does he let people into his shows for free?'. 'No he has to pay like everyone else'. I don't think she liked that but the people queuing gave their seal of approval! And who's idea was it to put me on the door? Christ the amount I had to drink by then was unreal! Oh yes it was Phil! He's the guilty one!

Come 1AM Michelle and I had enough. Twelve hours of drinking had caught up with me despite Eli wanting me to stay for more beers. We ran off!

This morning looking back there were good parts and bad parts to the day. I really don't like nostalgia - I believe you have to move forward and I stand by that. Still it was good meeting up with folks I hadn't seen in years and having a laugh with my mates. Oh and the great tunes played by Lee and Toast. Not forgetting Heather's food and finally the vast amount of alcohol that I supped.

It was funny counting the mount of people obviously dressing up for the day. New Ben Shermans and DM's on top of the price of a ticket must have set them back a fortune. They say you can't get mugged down memory lane but I reckon thats wrong! With new clothes for the day and the price of tickets must have set back some people well in the excess of £120 without the price of drinks, taxis, hotels etc. And they say there's a recession on!!

Still at the Westcoast we did it with style and the amount of people we had in proved that. We've got the best ska venue in the South East as well as the best DJ's. I don't believe any other venue can touch us when it comes to ska. We get it right every time.

Well see you all at Bad Manners. That should be a laugh. Wonder if I can get the next day off work?

Saturday, November 07, 2009

Come 5pm I arrive the venue where on arrival both bands had set up sp all I need to do is grab some food and then wait until it's time to visit the 2-Tone art exhibition in Margate.

As soon as 6.30pm Michelle and I head off to the art gallery where there's pretty cool stuff from the 2-tone days. We chat to the chap organising it who used to be the art director for the Specials. Cool bloke. We have some of his wine but it's awful!

7.30pm and the doors open and people start trickling in and by 8.15 there's a good crowd in to see Accident + Emergency the opening band.

From the moment they hit the stage this rock n rave band start bouncing about everywhere. It's hard to capture them on film simply because they don't stand still!! A photographer's nightmare!! They still have a few things to work on but this young band are certainly winning the local youth over and rightfully so too! Most of the crowd are going nuts to some of the numbers and it's great to see a young crowd out who are there for the band and not just there because they're mates. Both the band and the crowd had a great time and that's what live music is all about!

7 Day Conspiracy never showed up - I got sent an email when I was out saying the bassist was ill and they'd tried hard getting hold of me all day. They're on my My Space page so not really a hard task to do! They didn't get the message until they knew I'd at the venue. Still their loss as the crowd were really buzzing tonight and they had the opportunity to win over new people.

Next up were LightsGoBlue an electro-pop duo from Gravesend and who are making waves on the independent music scene both locally and nationally. Having played with the likes of Enter Shikkari and featuring on a recently released Enter Shikari single has added to this duo's fan base. From the moment Alex and Raj hit the stage the crowd go mental everywhere. The music LightsGoBlue play is infectious and the interaction they have with the crowd adds to this live set. If you haven't seen LightsGoBlue play then I highly recommend you do. Even if you don't like the music there is a full on stage presence and with the crowd going mental you can only admire what LightsGoBlue are all about. Certainly one of the best bands Kent has on offer.

The crowd were great last night and everyone left having had a wicked time. Everyone had smiles on their faces knowing they been to a decent show for just £1. It was good to see some of the regular faces like Amy and Ella as well as meeting people who are on my facebook such as Emily Heartcore.

If you're wondering where Thanet's youth were last night - They were down the Westcoast having a damned good time.

Thanks to both bands for playing and the crowd for being fucking awesome! Next Gig 4 A Quid show is:

APOLLYON - S/T EP: This Merseyside metal are nothing new and offer no more than the average local metal band you get in your home town. The problem is I have with theses mall metal outfits is there's no originality - The music sounds the same and the vocals are delivered in the same style. I'd like to see more British bands go the same way with their European counterparts experimenting with their sound and trying to offer something original. I really got bored with by the opening moments of the second track as it was all too predictable. 4/10

BUBBEL G - Get Ready: This five piece pop group are being tipped to become as big as artists such as the Saturdays and Girls Aloud. Unfortunately I'm in two minds about Bubbel G. On the one hand this goes to show what a poor state the record industry is in at this present and on the other hand I like the fun element about this group. Then there's the sexiness of this group. Believe you me these five ladies are very hot indeed. While Bubbel G are a lot of fun there has to be more to the music if they or any other group want to be taken seriously. 'Get Ready' is a fusion of quirky dance beats, R n B with catchy pop vocals thrown in which makes this record very hard to dislike. I'd have preferred to hear more songs from this group as all four tracks on this release are various mixes of Get Ready which was very annoying. I believe a young band should offer more! The jury is out on what the group is about but I do like this single so check them out and make up your own minds. 7/10

CHRIS REA - Still So Far To Go…The Best Of: I have to be honest here but I have to admit to hating the music that Chris Rea puts out. It's just not my thing at all! Tracks such as 'On The Beach', 'Diamonds', ‘I Don’t Know What It Is But I Love It’ AND ‘Loving You Again’ plus a couple of new numbers written for this release. However if you're a fan of Chris Rea then Rhino put out a pretty good package making this good value for money. It just wasn't for me! 4/10

DANIEL MERRIWEATHER - Water & A Flame: This is the latest single to be taken from Daniel Merriweather's second album 'Love & War'. For those not in the know this number is a duet with Adele who made her name in her own right with her amazing voice. I think this song is one of the best this man has been involved with and will certainly see him flying up the national charts as 'Water & A Flame' has all the right ingredients to please the masses. Despite being a commercial number I have to saw Daniel and Adele have gone out their way to make this number special. Not too sure about the instrumental to this song though! Seemed to be a pointless exercise to me! 8/10

DEAD TO ME - African Elephants: These guys are a new name to me and when I looked over the sleeve I had it in my head that these would be similar to other bands on the Fat Wreck label. I was wrong. Opening up this release 'X' a dub inspired track which took me by surprise. I didn't think a three-piece could pull it off! I was wrong! From then on this release kept on throwing surprises up with full on punk tracks such as 'Modern Muse' and 'Nothin Runnin Through My Brain'. Not forgetting 'A Day Without War' which sees them playing a reggae / punk song that the Clash would have been proud of! There's plenty of variation musically and that's what makes this band so cool. I also like the intermingling of the dual vocals. With those ingredients I can safely 'African Elephants' is simply great and I recommend everyone to check out what Dead To Me have to offer. This also comes well produced and packaged too! 9/10

FLOORS + WALLS
– S/T:
This Thanet born / Brighton based band are one of the best UK bands doing the rounds at present. Their fusion of Drum n Bass and Rock really makes this band the unit they are and I for one am surprised Floors + Walls aren't more widely known. It's certainly criminal Floors + Walls haven't been picked up by a label. However despite the setbacks this band haven't just given up. They've taken the hard knocks on the chin and with this single have come back more determined than ever. A band with guts is a band I enjoy. This three-track single is the nuts and I don't say that lightly either! I know the band and this is a very honest representation of what they're about. Opening up with 'Walk The Line' the band deliver some great tunes with equally wicked vocals from Alex Adams. There's not one slack track on here and all gel so well together that any of three numbers could be released as singles in their own right. I do have to say that 'Run To The Sun' did it for me as the track shows this band aren't all about three minute songs with plenty of energy. This five minute number really grabs you and keeps you held tight and that what's makes a damned good song. If you've not heard Floors + Walls before then this single is a bloody great place to start! 9/10

FOREIGN BEGGARS - Seven Figure Swagger: These guys will probably never be huge simply because they write and produce the music that they get a buzz from. Most people wouldn't get it and that's what makes Foreign Beggars stand out from the crowd. Both songs on this single are spot on and for a change it's good to hear an artist that can do decent remixes. If you've never heard these guys before they fuse rap with an alternative sound and other crazy assed shit that comes along. You'd think that all this madness wouldn't work but it does and for more effect you need to turn up the volume. I thought Seven Figure Swagger and Don't Dhoow It are both great songs in their own right and either number could have been the title track. If you enjoy real music with plenty of integrity then Foreign Beggars might be a band you'll enjoy? I certainly did! 9/10

FORTUNE - Highway EP: I wasn't too sure what to make of this electro-pop song at first but it's slowly grown on me and now I think it's a pretty decent song. What I really like about this tracks are the synths and how they've managed to fit them in without being too over baring! When played loud 'Highway' is one of those tunes you'll eventually dance too! On the downside my problem with this release it’s classed as an EP yet only has two songs on it. The other tracks are remixes of 'Highway' which are pretty pointless affairs to be honest! I really see remixed tracks as laziness and in such a cut throat business artists cannot afford to be complacent. However if you want to check out a decent outfit then this single is a fine place to start. 6.5/10

HANNAH - Shadow On The Wall: Estonia's most successful singer / song writer has been about for a decade and for much of that time has ruled the charts in her homeland. Now she's hoping to break the pop scene in this country and going on this hot new single I can see her doing that with ease. 'Shadow On The Wall' is a great pop song that will just blow people away. I don't say that lightly either as Hannah has Steve Brooker writing with her. This man was behind 'Mercy' which was a huge number one hit for Duffy in 2008. The catchy melodies combined with the sing-along choruses will appeal to everyone in mainstream music and quite rightfully so. Hannah really does deserve to be heard. I thank Estonia for producing an artist that will at last add class to the UK charts. 9/10

HARLEY'S WAR
- Hardcore All-Stars:
This CD/DVD combo is a new project from Harley Flanagan of Cro-Mags fame and for fans of NYHC this is one release that should not be ignored. Joining Harley on this project are members from the likes of Agnostic Front. Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Sick Of It All and Warzone. For your money you get twelve solid HC tracks such as 'Hardcore LAMF', 'You Don't Know', 'Spirit Of 77' and 'Scarred For Life'. Also there's four solo tracks from Harley which were recorded in 1982. Then if that wasn't enough there's sixteen live tracks which were recorded at the legendary CBGB's. Tracks include 'World Peace', 'Show You No Mercy', 'Survival Of The Streets' and 'Hard Times'. Onto the DVD which is of pretty high quality sees a full show recorded in NYC (GBGB's I presume?) and live tracks taken from shows in Gremany and Japan. Tracks include 'Who Survived', 'Down But Not Out', 'World Peace' and 'Steal My Crown'. There's twenty eight tracks in all. As a bonus you also get four music videos which are pretty cool. My only grumble I thought there would have been some sleeve notes but apart from that small gripe this release is certainly worth checking out! 9/10

ISLAND THREE - Dark And Empty Spaces EP: This is a rather nifty release musically as this rock band have a pretty diverse sound which sees them fusing guitars and keyboards with various samples. However what spoils it for me are the vocals. Edward Smith simply doesn't have voice for what the style of music Island Three are playing. If you ignore the vocals there's some pretty interesting stuff going on and that's what you should simply enjoy. Okay Island Three aren't the kind of band you could go and enjoy at a gig but it's fair to say they're the kind of band that is best enjoyed when you're chilling at home with a musical head on. For me 'Dial 51' and 'Moon Mirror Window' are the best numbers on here but I'm sure you'll find your own favourites. 6.5/10

THE JUNK - Novus Ordo Sectorum: I've never heard this ska-core crew but this three track offering was certainly a welcome relief to all the metal I've been hearing of late! While the Junk aren't the best band in the world I like the rawness of what if offered on this release. All three tracks are dynamic and what's more they have their own identities which is really important in today's world of drab music. If you're into bands like Capdown and the Foamers then you'll certainly dig what is on offer here. 'Monkey See Monkey Do' is my favourite track on here with it's full on attack though 'Scream The Dream' sand 'Far From Here' aren't too far behind. The Junk have been captured well on this recording and I for one would like to see these guys release an album in 2010. 7.5/10

THE MEDULLARY PARALYSIS - We Don't Drink…..EP: This industrial three-piece from Italy are the nuts. Despite the strange ultra lengthy title to this three track EP I really do think this band should be checked out. The Medullary Paralysis manage to create something very interesting and more importantly something you can dance to. Just have a listen to 'Compassion On The Dance Floor' you'll understand what I'm on about! This is certainly my favourite track though the third track 'Heaven Forbid' comes in very close with it's darker sound. 'Fashion Slave' is certainly worthy of a listen though could have done with a little more dancey feel to it. I've played this a few times now and every time I discover something new in the sound and that's what makes a good record in my eyes. If the industrial scene is your thing I recommend you give these a listen. 8.5/10

NECK
- Come Out Fighting!:
I didn't realise these guys were still going and it was so much of a pleasure of receiving this album through the post to review. Once I had fallen in through the door from picking up my mail I slipped this baby straight into the CD player and it's hardly been off ever since! Their brand of Irish folk fused with punk rock is just such a pleasure to hear. It's fair to say that Neck are more real than other bands in this genre such as the Dropkicks and Flogging Molly. Some have even rated this band on the same level as the Pogues and on hearing this release I can certainly understand why! From the opening moments of this album you are treated to some great fast paced tunes such as the title track 'Come Out Fighting!' and ballads suck as 'The Homes Of Donegal'. There's nothing whatsoever to dislike about this album and if this doesn’t get you jigging around your front room I don't know what will? I have to say that 'Come Out Fighting!' is certainly my favourite album of 2009 so far. One release not to be ignored! 10/10

NIRVANA - Live At Reading CD / DVD: Fans of Nirvana are going to love this never before released 1992 Reading show which includes almost the entire album of Nervermind. There are also three songs featured on this release that hadn't been released at the time of this show. Also it worth pointing out that only 2 of the 25 songs on the DVD have ever been released on DVD before. 'Love Buzz' is only featured on the DVD and missing off the CD. Not only is this wicked both sound wise and visual wise the quality of the packaging is also spot on too! This comes well packaged which includes a fold out booklet of photos taken of Nirvana at this show. Nirvana were never my thing but I was blown away with what I saw. Fans of Nirvana are going to love this limited edition package and quite rightfully so! Kurt Cobain and co really did do the business at this show and their magic can be seen and heard throughout this package. This is one release that everyone should check out! 10/10

PAMA INTERNATIONAL
- Pama Outennational:
I really rate Pama International and personally think they're the bets Dub / Ska outfit in the UK today and I don't say that lightly. The proof lies in the pudding and what you hear on this twelve track release is all the evidence I need to prove my claim. From the beginning of 'Equality & Justice For All' the band deliver some top notch tunes. Led by Finny the band serve up great songs such as 'Dub A Disco', 'Still I Wait', 'Question The Answer' and 'Look Out Your Window'. If these tracks don't excite I don't know what will? The high standard of playing and the feeling these guys put into their songs will certainly win you over? If not then there's no hope for you at all. Making guest appearances on this release include Lynval Golding and Sir Horace Panter from the Specials. This album is full of good tunes, great lyrics and plenty of charm. Not only that but the production is pretty cool too! A top notch release that deserves to take this band to a new level. That's how good Pama Outennational is! 9/10

TAYLOR BRIGHT - Striped Socks: Taylor Bright is considered the latest hottest teen sensation to come out of America and on hearing this single I can understand why. Not only is Taylor one hot teen she also has a great voice to match. More importantly though her tunes are catchy pop songs that you can't help but fall in love with. All three songs on this single are really enjoyable numbers that I've been playing a lot since this single fell into my hands. OK so the title track 'Striped Socks' is the best song on here but the other two numbers 'La Lal La Love' and 'My Worst Best Friend' aren't far behind. In fact the latter track could be released as a single in it's own right. What I've heard so far artists such as Avril Lavigne and Paramore had better watch out as this new girl on the block is gonna be a hit! 9/10

THE WHO
- The Who, The Mods And The Quadrophenia Connection DVD: This documentary tells the story of the Who and the connections with the mod culture both past and present. The links with the mod culture are dealt with a series of news reports, film and video clips etc. Not only that but people who know a fair bit about the mod culture including Richard Barnes (The Who's Fixit man), Paolo Hewitt, members of the Chords and The Purple Hearts. In fact there's a wealth of experience when talking about this subject and that's what makes this so damned interesting. As..a bonus there's tracks from the Who such as My Generation, Won't Get Fooled Again and Bell Boy. The Jam, the Chords and a few other bands to the Mod culture have cuts featured in this documentary. Usually when documentary style DVD's aren't authorised by bands and their labels I feel on many occasions that the quality goes right out the window and the purchaser ends up with something of low quality. However this DVD shows that it does work at times and I was amazed at some of the footage seen throughout this documentary. If you're a Who fan or have links to the mod culture this is one DVD that you should check out. Comes well packaged too! 8/10

Saturday was a bit of a miserable day and I weren't really looking forward to the evening as I was feeling a bit unwell and not really in the mood for partying. Come 5pm I headed off down to the venue where I had to scoff some food as I hadn't eaten all day. Once that lovely food was in my stomach the bands started turning up. I started to feel better in myself so the first of a few WKD's were poured down my throat.

Sadly CWB who were due play couldn't do so as their drummer left it until that night to tell them he was leaving the band! Tosser! I was really looking forward to seeing this band too!

Come 7pm and on another visit to the bar people were already queuing up so that made me feel better. Some had even dressed up for halloween too! Even better!

7.30pm came and the door from then on was just manic with only short bursts of breaks which were welcome. Floors + Walls are very popular in these parts and despite many going to their own halloween parties it was still very busy! 225 in!

8pm and it was time for the first band

Hooligan Village from Deal were an almost last minute addition to the show and despite being a young band they did ok. A few mistakes here and there but the rest of their half hour set was tight enough and the crowd seemed to react well to them. With more experience this group of 18 years old will do alright for themselves. Their fusion of rock and keyboards works and they are certainly a band to look out for in the future.

Once more it was back to the tunes and some of the crowd liked what they heard so that was good as most of the songs on the compiled CD had only just been released or yet to see a release date. All good stuff.

Next up was Mic Righteous who got the crowd going with his own style of hip-hop. As soon as he hit the stage it was a full on stage show that many in the crowd really appreciated. It was really intense stuff coming from this youngster. Margate born Mic Righteous tells the story of his life and what's going down. There's no faking here! It's fair to say Mic Righteous delivers the real deal. I'd never heard of the lad before but I'll certainly be checking him out again very soon. If hip-hop is your thing then give this guy a listen.

10pm comes and it's time for the band everyone has been waiting to see. Floors + Walls are back currently on their Cristal and Roll up tour. This four-piece certainly made the stage their own last night. I've seen this band a few times now and they never fail to impress. Alex Adams and Co certainly deliver a full on intense show from start to finish. It's criminal this band have been ignored by the music industry as their fusion of Rock with Drum N Bass goes down well everywhere. Alex the vocalist was just flying all over the stage with Dom Mcnulty (Guitar) and Ian Booth(Bass) being almost as energetic. Adam Shamp on drums was really going for it and the sweat and pain could be visibly seen on this man. Wicked stuff! Last night Floors + Walls were loving it and loving the reaction from the crowd who were going nuts! These guys just have to be seen to understand what their live show is all about and any tour bookers / promoters reading this you should be thinking of Floors + Walls. Certainly a night which many will be talking about over the coming weeks.

Top marks to the crowd for making it a really good show to be at. The vibe coming from these people was awesome and really added to the show. Nice one!

One girl who was at the show said these words on Floors + Walls My Space page this morning:

"Hey guys just to say what an awesome gig it was a riot thanks for adding Margate to your list made my week xx"

Thanks to Floors + Walls, Hooligan Village and Mic Righteous for delivering great sets. Thanks also to the crowd for turning out and making it one of the best shows we've put on this year in Margate.

Next show can be seen on the flyer below. Hope to see you there?

Kast Off Kinks - Live Westcoast - Fri 30th Oct 09
..
Anyway once I felt a bit of life I got ready and shot off down the venue. The food for the band was done so all I had to was wait for Luke a local reporter to run a piece on the show. Once he and his partner had arrived we set off backstage to have some photo's taken with the Kast Off Kinks.

To be honest I didn't really expect much from the Kast Off Kinks as these kind of acts usually bore the pants off me with just one old git re-living his / her past because they're broke! However this band contain three members of the Kinks so have more right to do it than most bands. It was also great to meet a bunch of guys who's heads weren't up their own arses. They're really a good bunch of fellas.

Come 9pm it was time for the Kast Off Kinks to hit the stage and from the moment they hit the stage they cracked jokes, told stories behind the songs they played and more importantly delivered those songs with style. They also admitted they haven't a stage show rehearsed and that's what made it all the more real for me!

One of the stories they told was about the song 'David Watts' (Some will probably only know the Jam's version of this song). This song was written about a real person. David Watts was some kind of senior figure in the army who invited Ray Davies and other members of the Kinks back to his house. It was a bizaare experience by all accounts so they wrote a song about him! I wonder if David Watts is still alive?

After watching the band for half hour giving it their all I had to make a move before I fell asleep. getting up at 5am for work is certainly taking it's toll these days! The Kast Off Kinks were certainly up for it last night and from what I saw and I expect they performed to that high standard for the rest of the night. The crowd loved it and rightly so as the band involved them from the beginning.

If you want to go and see a decent band with a great history then the Kast Off Kinks should be on your list. I just wish more of the old reformed punk bands would make an effort like these guys did last night.

Ella Montclare On My Space

Aside from the likes of Cheryl Cole who sits next to Simon Cowell every week and gives as good as she gets, there aren’t many young women who can handle the big bods of the music industry. But rising star and fellow Geordie Ella Montclare is an absolute exception and by chance was taken to Aftermath Records in LA to meet the one and only Dr. Dre. He asked her to sing to him on the spot and was so impressed he sat down and started writing songs with her that very day. They spent days recording in his studio and working with top beatmaster Steve ‘B’ Baughman who has worked his magic on massive tracks by 50 Cent and Eminem. “I thought touring with Babyface was going to be the highlight of my career...little did I know what and who was around the corner! Dre is so lovely, he may be the Godfather of Hip Hop but he was so humble and hardworking. I learnt so much from him he really is a musical genius and I love the results and my new material.”
