SMOOTH JAZZ RIDES “THE L,” WLFM (87.7 FM), TO ITS

NEW RADIO HOME IN CHICAGO

 

 

Smooth Jazz rides “The L,” WLFM 87.7 FM, its new radio home in Chicago.

 

In an immediate response to the long-rumored format switch at Clear Channel’s WNUA-FM, WLFM, which broadcasts from atop the John Hancock Center, executed a major double air-play, activating WLFM, 87.7 FM on the radio dial in Chicago and acquiring the broadcast rights from the Smooth Jazz Network – a division of Clear Channel -- for the Smooth Jazz format. The new Smooth Jazz station in Chicago will go by the nickname of “The L.”

 

WNUA was a pioneer of the Smooth Jazz format in the early 1990s. WNUA, an innovative, award-winning smooth jazz station, had more than 1 million radio listeners weekly. “The L” plan on reinstituting that cutting-edge community-responsive approach to Smooth Jazz in Chicago, which is a real plus to listeners and advertising partners.   

 

Veteran Chicago radio executive Patrick Kelley will oversee the operation of “The L,” serving as WLFM’s Chicago-based Senior Vice President and Market Manager. As Kelley says, “We are going to deliver to Chicago a hipper, cooler, Smooth Jazz station.  We are very excited to build this station around the passion Chicagoans have for contemporary jazz.”

 

“One of our main goals is to create a station that has a very strong Chicago identity,” says Kelley. “We want our listeners to be comfortable riding the ‘L’ all day and all night long from the first position on the dial.  We’re launching a radio station that represents the best of what Chicago radio listeners have heard for the past 22 years with a look forward, featuring actual artists that play the music as hosts during most of the broadcast hours.  Our music mix will represent what we’ve heard Chicagoan’s are asking for based on feedback over the past 22 years.  Just today, the outcry from the community to bring back Smooth Jazz has been tremendous.  We have the most passionate fans and listeners anywhere.”

 

Weekday mornings at WLFM, “The L,” will be hosted by Chicago native and jazz artist Brian Culbertson. Over the next few months, based on extensive market research, “The L” will base an increasing portion of locally based programming on feedback it receives from Chicago-area listeners.  The full line-up is as follows:
