SF tagged as "potential to become America's equivalent of Berlin for electronic music," by Lee Burridge in a recent article covering San Francisco's bubbling EDM scene.
http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature-read.aspx?id=1005A short quick read, published January 23, 2009.

San Francisco aka "The Bay" aka "San Fran" aka "Frisco" aka "San Frandisco" aka "The Disco". Whatever it might be called, San Francisco is a special place for so many who call SF home.
People come from all over the world to experience what's being called America's version of Berlin for Electronic Music and events that still hold a "special feel" or "vibe" that SF's dance scene has become accustomed too and associated with.

So here is too you San Francisco, for so many good memories that will not soon be forgotten, all those good times and many more to come.

Recently came across two great blogs regarding two very exotic dance music meccas...
* Beatportal (beatports music news outlet) discusses digital piracy in the southern region w/ the upcoming South American Music Conference (SAMC). A global issue in electronic music, but is interesting with the historic dance culture and massive amounts of musical creativity through out the region....
READ HERE>>>> http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/south-america-boom-or-bust1/
* GrooveSource Media covers the Dubai and its booming city of luxury. Everything is there, fake islands, indoor ski resorts, drugs, sex, prostitution, human rights, mega clubs, futurist skylines, a dark side...
from groove source media 2007>>>> Known previously as a tiny, Muslim port of trade, this nouveau playground for the rich and ridiculously richer has become an almost unattainably lavish destination dance locale. Clubs, many of which dwarf those that revelers have experienced in their home countries, populate the city by the hundreds. Reports of almost unbelievable luxury from this clubbing paradise have helped plant this city of the future (replete with artificial islands and indoor skiing) into the imaginations of the club-hopping jet set. But are the bright lights and futuristic skyscape of this city on the world a distraction from darker cultural and human rights issues which run like oil in the underbelly of Dubai?
Several high profile cases have brought the delicate counterbalance between traditional middle-eastern values and western debaucheries that accompany global clubbing into focus. The consequence of these oppositional ideologies has been the arrest and imprisonment of many foreigners for drug and sex related offenses. Often what would be only a minor infraction in someone's western home country, can lead to a severe prison sentence in Dubai.
The city's zero tolerance policy for many of the west's most treasured vices makes the November 23rd arrest of Radio One's DJ Grooverider (on a charge of pornography and marijuana possession) come as little surprise to many, who saw such a circumstance as an eventuality for one of the artists who frequent the area. But Raymond Bingham (AKA Grooverider) was not the first notable westerner to dance his way into an uncomfortable position with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates.
MTV's Bam Margera and his new wife found out first person exactly how deep the ties between this new megatropolis and the ancient Islamic laws of the region run. The reality TV duo was strip-searched at the airport upon the mere suspicion that they could be smuggling drugs into the UAE when honeymooning in the futuristic destination in 2007. The pending outcome of the Grooverider case is sure to be an important and closely watched battle in the ongoing conflict between the values of the Dubai's decadent visitors and the old world ideologies of the Arabian Peninsula. The stiff sentences now under discussion as a result of the Radio One DJ's arrest can only bring more attention to Dubai's pesky human rights and civil liberties record.
While many clubbers are aware that this paradise is not governed by the same set of laws and ideas that structure much of western civic life, perhaps few realize how difficult life in Dubai can be for those who are not traveling guests of the city. The government is not democratically governed. In fact, citizens have no mechanism at all to change their government or political parties. There is no right of free assembly and the rights of workers are severely infringed upon. It is common practice for employers in the UAE to confiscate employees' passports during their employment to preclude employees from changing jobs or returning to their homes. There are ongoing reports of blue collar worker abuse pandemic to the United Arab Emirates, which resulted in riots of Asian workers at several construction sites. But Dubai's besmudged records violations aren't limited to infractions on basic civic and employment rights.
The most visible abuse of human rights in Dubai is also the UAE's most overlooked abuse. The unofficially condoned status of prostitution is especially ironic when compared to the severity of punishments for pornography. Dubai, like many popular tourist locales has become a destination for "sexual tourists." Indeed, the brothels in Dubai are often described as conspicuous by those who visit the Persian Gulf Coast. But few realize that the industry is supplied largely via the human trafficking and kidnapping of women via an elaborate international network. Perhaps, in a region known for the second class citizenship of women, it should come as less of a surprise than it does that when criminalizing vice, crimes against women (who are forced by the thousands into Dubai's prostitution rings) are overlooked largely. Women of Eastern-European and African origin are regularly kidnapped, beaten, raped and shipped to the same areas populated by continental clubbers. After being enslaved, they are offered as just another of Dubai's garden of delights to late night revelers with little notice or care on the part of those who travel there. But that may be changing.
The recent arrests in relation to other vice-related crimes are shedding new light on this destination. Tourists, now experiencing more issues with Dubai's laws, are posing tough questions about the overall social climate of Dubai. As travelers, wary of stories about harsh prison sentences, become less and less inclined to spend their money in a location where their way of life is not tolerated, many expect to see a change. Whether that change will come in the number of vacationers or in the laws of Dubai remains yet to be seen.

House heads in Amsterdam eat, live and shit dance music. There wasn't a moment of silence the entire trip: constant lurking distractions, smoked filled coffee shops, whole building-side posters, mega club after mega club, massive function-one concert size sound systems and the Dirty Dutch scene.

What a picture perfect location for Europe's Largest Music Conference!

ADE (www.amsterdamdanceevent.nl) has been in existence for over ten years. I had a chance to meet Richard Zijlman, the G.M. / Producer of the ADE, who was ecstatic for the sell out crowd of delegates representing artist, record labels, club venues and new-media outlets from all over the world.

Day 1: After Thursday's ADE panel discussions, I meet up with some new friends from Germany for a coffee shop break. At this point I had been up for +20 hours and it wasn't going to stop there. Following the coffee shop we tried the local Mexican food. Not recommended if you are from California; really expensive and not half as good a Mission St. or Santa Cruz Taqueria.

Thursday night's agenda included attending the Kompakt night at Sugar Factory (www.sugarfactory.nl). Amazing venue and even better crowd. A wicked tag-team set by Sandrien (www.djsandrien.nl) & Carlos Valdes (www.myspace.com/carlosvaldesmuzik) started the night correct sporting vinyl grooves prior to Kompakt's own Michael Mayer ( www.kompakt-net.com ). Heineken, Jack and Cokes, and pre-rolled spliffs from the coffee shop was right out side the venue. A perfect start to the long weekend! Definitely check out the Sugar Factory and these deejays. Amazing skills and selections from the minimal-tech-groove …

Day 2: Met with great friend Duncan aka Dunca ( www.duncadelafunk.com ) after his return flight from America and headed to ADE for Friday's panel discussions and networking. By surprise I ran into my old friend Henry Sarmiento (www.sonicvistastudios.com), who mastered friends 'The Expendables' and many Om and Transport recording artists prior to opening his Ibiza HQ and mastering studio. We checked out Chuck D's keynote presentation on exploitation, followed by the international mobile marketing panel. I also met with new media outlets representing Ireland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands. After a long day of meetings and panel discussions I had to make time for a good power nap prior to hitting another night on the town.

Friday Nights Menu included Beatport's Event at the Cineac (www.cineac.nl), DJ Chuckie ( djchuckie.com ) put it down in style handling the crowd with some burning cuts along with French Legend DJ David Guetta (EMI/Virgin, fr) and DJ Jaziah (Slized Label/Digidance, nl). The venue was more on the posh side, but still a fun crowd: very energetic and receptive to this particular deejay bill.

"11" (www.ilove11.nl) was my next stop to meet back up with Henry. Being on the 11th floor of an old downtown building made for a fun industrial style elevator ride packed with after-hours club kids. This place was crazy! Capacity crowd with visual screens running down both sides of the long top floor space, $2 Heinekens till 6am with new Dutch friends, and awesome selections of funky tech and electro. At this point it was approaching 6am and Tommie Sunshine (NYC) brought down the house with an eclectic selection of electro, funk filtered house and tech. (tommiesunshine.com). By 6:30 the sun began to come up and we made our way to a killer shawarma restaurant by motorcycle taxi . . . That's the last thing I remember. Some how I made my way to another coffee shop then and back to Dunca's house in Noordwijk, which is 30 minutes down the coast. Public Transportation Rocks!

Day 3: Sleep, Smoke, Repeat.
Night: Saturday = Cocoon, Cocoon, Cocoon! ( www.cocoongoesamsterdam.nl ) There was a ton of hype on this event, and for good reason. German Techno Player Sven Vath (www.cocoon.net) worked the crowd with one of his signature techno sets along with mini-tech rocker Dominik Eulberg (www.dominik-eulberg.de). The location 'The Sands' was proper: reminded me of a much nicer, safer and larger 550 Barneveld. Dual level venue with a capacity reaching 3,000+! ( www.thesand.nl ) Ridiculous flying function-one sound, elevated DJ booths, a VIP area with industry bar right behind the DJ booth that was just a little bit too convenient.

Day 4: This was probably the chillest day of the entire trip. We ended up doing almost nothing but a little studio session and drinking the local Heineken brew.
Night: Bowling with Duncan, Colin, Tyler, Rose and Anna Flur! I have not been bowling in years. I forgot how much fun it could be with a spliff, some shots of jack and a few pitchers of beer.

Day 5: 12 hour flight to Detroit.
Trip Sum Up: Go to A-dam! Go often! Go with your dancing shoes!
Rent a bike for a day or two!
