Well, I guess I can offer my own eulogy of sorts to the El Rey theatre and the Golden West. I can add to the other thoughts floating around through cyber space and share in the overall sympathetic vibes regarding the loss of two venues that have provided great opportunities to new bands and have staged some great shows.
When I first moved to 505 in the mid-nineties, I saw my first local band there and the place was packed. It was Apricot Jam. It was the reason and the motivation I received that night that has launched my love for local music and the scene; as well as, given me the goods to be able to have an awesome job doing what I love.
The first show I ever mixed, by myself was in the Golden West and the first show that I ever mixed and recorded live was there as well. The first National act that I ever wrote about for the Alibi was the El Rey. The first room in Burque I ever booked was...you guessed it...the Golden West and the El Rey.
So many firsts... I was just there to drop off gear with my co-worker from Audio Excellence there a week ago.
You know how when you lose someone suddenly or break up with someone, you are left wishing you had known, that would be the last time... You know what I mean? Like is this the last kiss, the last time I make love and the last time I play a show in this venue? I suppose those thoughts are somewhat un-remarkable in the scheme of things, but that is what I am left with as I think about what was lost today.
The up side is, no one was hurt. Thank God for that. Although there is loss and financial hardships that these wonderful owners are now confronted with, no one has died and we have the memories that can't be burned down.
I hope that we all can lend a hand to help Kathy and to help Joe with his damages in the Launchpad. At the very least, we can offer our support when they spring back into life soon, and play our shows and see our favorite bands and release our CDs and see what is next on our musical horizon.
So many firsts that I remember today and reflect upon and so many more to come...
