Indians and settlers may have been on to something about the tart fruit's healing abilities.European settlers first put cranberries on the Thanksgiving table because the local fruit lasted through winter and enhanced the flavor of gamy meat. The settlers had picked up on the berry's culinary potential from Native Americans, who survived cold winters by filling up on pemmican, a cake of cranberries, nuts and dried venison or bear meat. Both groups also prescribed cranberries for fevers, gastrointestinal problems and dropsy -- a term used to describe any swelling or inflammation. Turns out, they were onto something. In the last few decades, scientists have begun to confirm and explain the cranberry's ability to fight infections of the urinary tract and gut and its potential to fight gum disease, heart disease and cancer. "For over a hundred years, women have known that cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections," says Amy Howell, associate research scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture-supported Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research at Rutgers University in Camden, N.J. "They thought it was due to acidity, but that's actually not the case." Cranberry's antibacterial properties are due to a class of chemical compounds called proanthocyanidins. Ten years ago, Howell's research group isolated the compounds and demonstrated how they work: Proanthocyanidins bind to harmful bacteria such as E. coli, forming a "Teflon-like" coating around them. The coating prevents the bacteria from sticking to gastrointestinal and urinary tract walls, impeding infections.
The nonstick properties of proanthocyanidins may explain the results of several clinical trials that showed that cranberry juice can reduce the frequency of urinary tract infections.
For example, a study published in the British Medical Journal in 2001 showed that women who drank a couple of ounces of cranberry juice daily for six months had a 20% lower risk of urinary tract infections, compared with women in a control group. A study published in the Canadian Journal of Urology in 2002 showed that just 20% of women who drank three glasses of cranberry juice daily for a year experienced urinary tract infection symptoms, compared with 32% of women who drank a placebo. And last month, a study in the journal Urology found that two glasses of cranberry juice a day reduced the frequency of urinary tract infections by 41% among pregnant women. Proanthocyanidins also appear to keep the bacterium H. pylori, which causes ulcers, from sticking to the linings of the stomach and intestines. A 2005 study of 189 adults with H. pylori infections in the journal Helicobacter, showed that two glasses of cranberry juice daily for three months reduced the degree of infections, compared with those who drank a placebo. And a study in the journal Nutrition this year showed that a daily glass of cranberry juice eliminated H. pylori infections in 16% of infected children; a placebo eliminated only 1.5%. Other research suggests that the compounds could keep plaque-forming bacteria at bay. In lab experiments, cranberry proanthocyanidins stopped oral streptococci and other bacteria from sticking to surfaces. But researchers warn against using the juice as a mouthwash because of its sugar content and acidity. Cranberries are high in vitamins A, E and C, iron, calcium, potassium and antioxidants. The last may explain the fruit's possible anti-cancer and anti-heart-disease effects. Cranberry impedes the growth of liver and breast cancer cells in lab dishes, says Jie Sun, a scientist at General Mills who previously researched the fruit's anti-cancer effects at Cornell University. And in 2006, Canadian researchers published suggestive findings in the British Journal of Nutrition showing that drinking a glass of cranberry juice a day increased concentrations of good HDL cholesterol by 8% in overweight men. (The study was funded by the Canadian Cranberry Growers Coalition.) But the tart red berries may not be for everyone. Gorging on too many or guzzling too much juice can result in an upset stomach or diarrhea. A couple of reports indicate that cranberry juice may increase the risk of kidney stones in people prone to them. And there's conflicting evidence that cranberries may interfere with blood thinning drugs, such as warfarin. The common cranberry's benefits still seem to outweigh its drawbacks, but despite this, most Americans limit their consumption to a single day of the year. The reason for this may have been best summed up by writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau more than 150 years ago: Cranberries, he wrote, were easy to harvest, but their taste was "a little bitterish." Given the amount of sugar in most cranberry sauce recipes, most Americans, it seems, would agree.

A Queens woman who was pepper-sprayed for dashing down an up-only subway staircase is suing the city - and the cop who hauled her away in cuffs - for $3 million. Naeema Screven says she was only trying to catch her train, which was pulling into the station, when she zipped down to the A line platform at the Broadway station in Brooklyn. One side of the stairway was designated "down" and the other side "up," the complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court said. The "down" side of the stairway was crowded, so she admits she crossed under the yellow tape to the "up" side.

NEW ORLEANS - The cholesterol drug Crestor slashes the risk of heart attacks and strokes in half for people with normal or low cholesterol in a study, potentially opening a way to save the lives of thousands of seemingly healthy people. The benefits were shown in patients with high levels of a protein called CRP, an indicator of inflammation. CRP is tied to heart risk even in people with no additional symptoms. Crestor is approved by U.S. regulators only to lower bad cholesterol. The trial, reported at the American Heart Association meeting in New Orleans, may help double Crestor's yearly sales to $6.33 billion by 2015, expand the $34 billion market for all cholesterol-lowering medicine and prevent 50,000 heart complications a year, analysts said. The results suggest an additional 6 million men over age 50 and women over age 60, the group studied, should take the drugs, doctors said. "Half of heart attacks and strokes happen among apparently healthy men and women with normal or even low levels of cholesterol," said Paul Ridker, the lead investigator from Harvard Medical School. The study may also spur a push to screen healthy people for CRP, though doctors at the meeting debated whether the findings resulted from CRP control or lowering bad cholesterol further than is now recommended.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — A 23-year-old teacher burned in an acid attack on 15 schoolgirls and instructors wants the Afghan government to throw acid on her attackers and then hang them. Kandahar's governor said Tuesday that authorities had arrested 10 alleged Taliban militants for the Nov. 12 attack in this southern city and that several confessed to taking part. Gov. Rahmatullah Raufi said the men would be tried in open court, a pledge that pleased Nuskaal, a first-year math teacher who suffered acid burns on her shoulders. "Those girls were simply going to school to get an education," said Nuskaal, who like many Afghans goes by one name. "My parents told me that security isn't good enough and that they were worried about me teaching. But I told my parents I won't stop teaching. I'm not afraid." After the attack, President Hamid Karzai called for the perpetrators to be executed in public. Nuskaal said the attackers should have acid thrown on them first. Men riding motorbikes squirted acid from water bottles onto three groups of students and teachers walking to school. Several girls suffered burned faces and were hospitalized. One teenager couldn't open her eyes for days after the attack, which sparked condemnation around the world. Afghanistan's government called the attack "un-Islamic," while the United Nations labeled it "a hideous crime." First lady Laura Bush decried the attackers as cowardly. The government charged Tuesday that high-ranking Taliban fighters paid the suspects a total of $2,000 to carry out the attack. The assailants came from Pakistan but were Afghan nationals, said Doud Doud, an Interior Ministry official. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi denied Tuesday that any of the group's members were involved. Kandahar province is the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban, the hard-line Islamic militiamen who ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and are now waging an insurgency against Karzai. The area is one of Afghanistan's most conservative, a place where women rarely venture far from home.

One of the most frequently asked questions about the subprime market meltdown and housing crisis is: How did the government get so deeply involved in the housing market? The answer is: President Clinton wanted it that way. Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac, (FRE) even into the early 1990s, weren't the juggernauts they'd later be. While President Carter in 1977 signed the Community Reinvestment Act, which pushed Fannie and Freddie to aggressively lend to minority communities, it was Clinton who supercharged the process. After entering office in 1993, he extensively rewrote Fannie's and Freddie's rules. In so doing, he turned the two quasi-private, mortgage-funding firms into a semi-nationalized monopoly that dispensed cash to markets, made loans to large Democratic voting blocs and handed favors, jobs and money to political allies. This potent mix led inevitably to corruption and the Fannie-Freddie collapse. Despite warnings of trouble at Fannie and Freddie, in 1994 Clinton unveiled his National Homeownership Strategy, which broadened the CRA in ways Congress never intended. Addressing the National Association of Realtors that year, Clinton bluntly told the group that "more Americans should own their own homes." He meant it. Clinton saw homeownership as a way to open the door for blacks and other minorities to enter the middle class. Though well-intended, the problem was that Congress was about to change hands, from the Democrats to the Republicans. Rather than submit legislation that the GOP-led Congress was almost sure to reject, Clinton ordered Robert Rubin's Treasury Department to rewrite the rules in 1995. The rewrite, as City Journal noted back in 2000, "made getting a satisfactory CRA rating harder." Banks were given strict new numerical quotas and measures for the level of "diversity" in their loan portfolios. Getting a good CRA rating was key for a bank that wanted to expand or merge with another. Loans started being made on the basis of race, and often little else. "Bank examiners would use federal home-loan data, broken down by neighborhood, income group and race, to rate banks on performance," wrote Howard Husock, a scholar at the Manhattan Institute. But those rules weren't enough. Clinton got the Department of Housing and Urban Development to double-team the issue. That would later prove disastrous. Clinton's HUD secretary, Andrew Cuomo, "made a series of decisions between 1997 and 2001 that gave birth to the country's current crisis," the liberal Village Voice noted. Among those decisions were changes that let Fannie and Freddie get into subprime loan markets in a big way. Other rule changes gave Fannie and Freddie extraordinary leverage, allowing them to hold just 2.5% of capital to back their investments, vs. 10% for banks. Since they could borrow at lower rates than banks due to implicit government guarantees for their debt, the government-sponsored enterprises boomed. With incentives in place, banks poured billions of dollars of loans into poor communities, often "no doc" and "no income" loans that required no money down and no verification of income. By 2007, Fannie and Freddie owned or guaranteed nearly half of the $12 trillion U.S. mortgage market — a staggering exposure. Worse still was the cronyism. Fannie and Freddie became home to out-of-work politicians, mostly Clinton Democrats. An informal survey of their top officials shows a roughly 2-to-1 dominance of Democrats over Republicans. Then there were the campaign donations. From 1989 to 2008, some 384 politicians got their tip jars filled by Fannie and Freddie. Over that time, the two GSEs spent $200 million on lobbying and political activities. Their charitable foundations dropped millions more on think tanks and radical community groups. Did it work? Well, if measured by the goal of putting more poor people into homes, the answer would have to be yes. From 1995 to 2005, a Harvard study shows, minorities made up 49% of the 12.5 million new homeowners. The problem is that many of those loans have now gone bad, and minority homeownership rates are shrinking fast. Fannie and Freddie, with their massive loan portfolios stuffed with securitized mortgage-backed paper created from subprime loans, are a failed legacy of the Clinton era.
So.....What do we have HERE?? Super (White) Man Clinton...in his desire to be a "Black President" or seen as the "Savior" to Black folks if you will, ACTUALLY was the progenitor of our current financial crisis. Go back and read what was written: "In doing so (rewriting fannie/freddie's policies), He (Clinton), turned the two quasi-private, mortgage funding firms into a semi-nationalized monopoly that (Pay attention now): DISPENSED CASH TO MARKETS, MADE LOANS TO LARGE DEMOCRATIC VOTING BLOCS (A Majority of blacks vote for WHICH Party?), AND HANDED FAVORS, JOBS AND MONEY TO POLITICAL ALLIES.
Hmmmmm.....Sounds like Clinton was saying to Black America: "You wanna take part in this American Dream (Home Ownership), ok! I'll help you get a home, YOU give ME your allegiance and your vote and it's ALL GOOD "
Next in this article, it stated: "Clinton saw home ownership as a way for Blacks and other minorities to enter the Middle -Class, (skipping a little) and with incentives in place, banks poured billions into poor communities, often "no doc" or "no income" loans that required NO money down and NO income verification. (skipping further) Fannie and Freddie became home to out-of-work politicians, mostly Clinton-Democrats, and an informal survey showed that top officials had a 2-1 dominance, Democrats over Republicans."
SO!! What are we seeing in this article?? In MY humble opinion??.... Fmr. Pres. Clinton was looking for political stature and an unwaivering allegiance amongst our nation's minorities. Personal favors were MORE THAN LIKELY given to top executives at banks/lending companies for them "pouring" billions into poor communities, WHICH IS RETARTED! Why would you lend ANYONE money without knowing how EXACTLY they're going to pay it back?? Uh Duhhhhh!!!! Not rocket science Bill!! Then we see Clinton cronies, which KNEW their top held positions weren't going to last forever, and were probably promised a seat at the proverbial table, being put in positions in Freddie and Fannie BEFORE Clinton went out of power. Which ALL says a few things to me. Clinton NEVER gave a damn about people of color and had us GASSED BIG TIME!It was all just smoke an mirrors so he can stay in office the two-term maximum then retire on TOP of the game with MAD dough. WHICH HE DID, since he AND his wife are multi-millionaires. This ALSO says to me that just because someone has noble INTENTIONS, doesn't mean they're NOBLE! Clinton probably knew this financial predictament was inevitable, but because HE wasn't going to be in office when it HAPPENED, he didn't give a damn. So the same people he asked for allegiance from ONCE AGAIN got screwed by another slick-talkin' white guy with a smile, cuz now OUR community is the one losing their houses in RECORD numbers. Lastly, From 1995-2005, A Harvard study said: Out of the 12.5 million new home owners in the U.S., 49% were minorities. Now that all the loans are going bad, Malcolm X's words are coming to pass: "I don't see an American Dream, I see an American NIGHTMARE!"
What do YOU think?...............

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - A judge has declared unconstitutional a law banning sagging pants in this town after a teenager spent a night in jail on accusations he exposed too much underwear. Circuit Judge Paul Moyle struck down the law after a lawyer for the teen, Julius Hart, 17, argued, "Your honor, we now have the fashion police."
Now...you and I already KNOW that if a young brother is walking in the streets of AmeriKKKa with his pants hanging to his kneecaps....no doubt....he's GOING to be harassed...PROFILED....if you will! Is it right?? Of COURSE it isn't! But....knowing that you WILL be lumped in with the rest of said: "knucklehead" population...why would one put themselves THROUGH that, ALL in the name of making a "fashion statement???" A fashion statement that came from AmeriKKKa's system of continuous slavery?.....The Prison Industrial Complex! Is THAT what you young cats identify with?? Why?? WHY is the Rapper...The Pimp...The Pusher....The Mafia Guy your idols?? I'm not a "religious" man per se....but doesn't scripture teach us about "idol worship?" hmmmmm.....Think about it! How does the dictionary DEFINE "Idol?" Idol is: a form or appearance visable, but without SUBSTANCE! hmmmmm..... Why isn't the Doctor, The Dentist, The Lawyer, The Socal Worker The Nurse The Business Executive, The EMS Worker, The Teacher/Professor the person you "idolize?" Your role model? The person you want ot emulate/immitate? If, God help you, you get shot right NOW......Is the Rapper, the pimp, the pusher or the guy from the mafia gonna take care of you?? nahhhhhh.......probably not..... But look at the list that "I" gave you. A majority of MY list will come into play if you do. EMS, will treat you first, then the nurse, then the Dr., The social worker will find out from what kind of home you come, your teacher will let people know how your grades are which will be a reflection of your home/social life, and a Lawyer will have to defend you IF you have to go to court behind the shooting, because ALL shootings HAVE to be reported to the police by hospital personnel. Who should REALLY be your idols??? You young cats better recognize....... Just some'n on my mind..... Peace!!!!

The Senate passed a military spending bill that includes a pay raise for military personnel, despite Republican objections to billions of dollars in special projects lawmakers had added. The measure passed 88 to 8 after negotiations on amendments failed. Absent and not voting were three senators engaged in the presidential race: the Republican nominee, John McCain of Arizona; his Democratic rival, Barack Obama of Illinois; and Mr. Obama's running mate, Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware. The measure would permit $612.5 billion in spending for military programs in 2009, including $70 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also includes a 3.9 percent pay increase for military personnel. The House passed a version of the bill in May, which will have to be reconciled with the Senate version before the legislation is sent to the president. Let me get this straight......... The President needs Congress to approve an Economic Emergency Bailout Package for $700 Billion Dollars......but they "magically" found $612.5 Billion for the Military??? That includes 3.9% PAY RAISES for military personnel???? Another $70 Billion for Iraq and Afghanistan?? Hmmmmm........Seems like the $700 Billion is ALREADY there!! Is it me???

A nonprofit group that spruces up Midtown is violating the civil rights of four Rastafarian workers by ordering them to hide their dreadlocks under their uniform caps, the feds charged yesterday. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed suit in Manhattan federal court against the Grand Central Partnership, alleging that the hair-raising order discriminates against the men because of their religious beliefs. The men - Deon Bailey, Brian Lee, Frantz Seraphin and Milton Marcano - all work as security patrol officers for the partnership. The partnership's dress code requires officers to have their hair "properly cut" or tucked "neatly inside their security department issued uniform caps." But the men's "growing dreadlocks have become increasingly difficult to tuck fully inside the uniform caps," the lawsuit says. All four have been repeatedly reprimanded, and Bailey, Lee and Seraphin were briefly suspended from work. The dress code also requires that officers be "clean shaven," and in 2005, Seraphin, who had started growing a beard "in accordance with his Rastafarian beliefs," shaved it off after he was threatened with firing, according to the lawsuit. The men declined to comment. "In our view, the Rastafarians are being treated differently," said EEOC lawyer Robert Rose. The lawsuit seeks back pay and interest, as well as punitive damages. A spokesman for the partnership said the lawsuit was "without merit" and said the partnership had made "numerous good-faith efforts to resolve the matter." "This lawsuit is surprising since it comes on the heels of a previous accommodation made by GCP, in consultation with union representatives, to furnish custom-made larger hats for use by the employees named in this lawsuit. This custom-made hat was successfully tested and approved by one of the complainants, who also serves as a union delegate," spokesman David Roskin said. Yesterday's case follows a similar lawsuit filed in 2006, when the EEOC sued United Parcel Service in New Jersey on behalf of another Rastafarian, Ronnis Mason, who was told he had to shave his beard. That case is awaiting trial. There's ALWAYS been problems in corporate America with our sistas and THEIR "braids/ethnic looking hairstyles," etc., but would they do this to someone who's jewish with their Yarlmulke and the long curls that hang from THEIR head's and off THEIR faces?? Just doesn't make sense to me family.....Help me out here!!! It's 2008! Aren't these companies realizing that there's such a diversity amongst people in America from Yuppie to Goth? And that MOST people aren't WEARING their hair styles in what many might consider the "norm?" Do you all think they have a case? Should they just leave it alone and comply?....or should they simply quit??? You tell ME!!

Peace and Ancestral Blessings family! You all have no idea how wonderful it is to meet such positive and cultural people. it does some'n to my spirit that I can't even begin to describe. We are putting ogether two things. One, a NEW movement for the 21st century that we're going to put together through my weekly internet radio show which I HOPE you all have listened to and told your friends and family about. :-) Secondly, we're working on putting together an African-American Independent Political Party (AAIPP). Reason being, The Democratic AND Republican Parties have BOTH failed our people! TREMENDOUSLY! Let me give you all that DON'T know, a little history about people of color and the two major political parties. From 1865, when we were ALLEGEDLY released from slavery till about 1964, you're talkin' about 100 years....Blacks in America voted predominantly Republican. It only made perfect sense since the President that "freed" us was a Republican. But even before AND after that, most of the abolitionists we Republicans, and it was Republican Congresses that gave us the different legislations that have HELPED our people. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, The Voting Rights Act, The Civil Rights Act, were all passed by The Republican Party. The Democrats were hell-bent against it ALL. As a matter of fact, it was the Democrats that were PRO-SLAVERY! Shocked?? Pay attention! In 1964, when Dr. King was trying to get the Civil Rights Act passed under Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson, the racist scumbag that he was, there was a Republican senator from Arizona named: Barry Goldwater. Now...Sen. Goldwater said: "Blacks don't need a civil righs bill." Why would he say that? 100 years of supporting Republicans and Republicans supporting us, and a Republican senator says THIS?? Without hearing or understanding the FULLNESS of what the senator was saying, he media and the so-called "Black Leadership" at the timemisconstrued what Sen. Goldwater said, and like a giant exodus, blacks said: "Well, if that's how the Republicans feel, then maybe we should support the Democrats!" And just like a streak of lightening, Blacks in America started supporting the Democratic Party. NOW.....What WE need to understand is, Sen. Goldwater wasn't saying that blacks in America didn't NEED civil rights. He was saying that all the civil rights WE needed, were given to us in the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the constitution and just needed to be BETTER ENFORCED! So why all this? Because I'm a firm believer in Mao Tse-Tung's philosophy of: "No Investigation, No Right to Speak!" Year after year, election after election, blacks give this undying, unbending, unwaivering support to a political party that historically wanted them to pick cotton God's sake! Now, while the Democrats may not want to pick cotton....well....with the exception to the Dixiecrats(Southern Democrats), they have failed to meet the needs of our people as a whole, and thats why we have to using our VERY POWERFUL VOTING BLOC and ECONOMIC POWER (850 Billion per annum), to bring about the change that we REALLY need in our communities and stop 2 things. ONE, waiting 4 someone ELSE to come and save us when we're more than capable of doin it 4 our selves, and TWO, stop letting OTHER PEOPLE pick OUR leaders!! So again, this is why I'm promoting the formation of our OWN political party that we can use to win local, countywide and state elections. Remember, ALL politics is local! it CAN be done. The Democratic Party aint SHYT w/o our vote. Think about that as we move forward in the 21st century in no better a position than we were 100 years ago as far as political and economic empowerment is concerned. 850 Billion dollars a year we spend as a people in America. We're only 12.8% of the population (40 million), making us the 6th largest GNP(Gross National Product)....meaning if blacks in America were a country, we'd be the 6TH largest ECONOMICALLY STRONG nation IN THE WORLD...but yet.......we don't even make our own toilet tissue. What do YOU think??? Sincerely, Bro. Hank!!
