Zombies have been around for many decades. Just recently have they finally decided they should no longer try to hide but come out and demand equal rights. Below are just a few spots in history to tell about how unjustly the living challenged have been treated.

On Labor Day, September 2, 1935, a major hurricane bore down on the Florida Keys, a string of islands separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane, one of only two Category 5 storms ever recorded in the United States, made landfall at Key West, the most populous of the keys. As day turned to night, heavy rains and winds of over 150 miles an hour rolled over the island, destroying virtually everything standing. Amid the destruction, by morning zombies started to appear to see what they could do to help. Many islanders mistook the zombies for dazed hurricane survivors and left them alone. But several realized what was going on and reported them trying to have them destroyed. To make matters worse, the roads and bridges connecting the keys to the mainland had been washed out by the storm. The zombies had no way to escape.

Within days, Troops from all over the south converged .. West in a variety of sea craft. They established a beachhead on the south side of the island and went about the process of extermination. It took three weeks to secure the island. A total of 3500 zombies were destroyed.

Vicksburg, Mississippi, 1863
1863 was the pivotal year of the American Civil War. The Union army, sensing victory, tried to deal a knockout blow to the Confederacy by taking control of the Mississippi River. After New Orleans fell to the Union, the city of Vicksburg remained as the last Confederate holdout on the big river. On May 18, 1963, 3200 Union troops arrived off the coast of Vicksburg and demanded an immediate surrender. But Confederate leaders refused, and the Union laid siege to the city. A month of heavy bombardment ensued.

On June 17, city residents spotted the first zombie simply trying to help end the misery of a dying soldier, and within days, they were exposed and under threat yet again. This development amused the 30,000 Confederate troops protecting the city; they entertained themselves by conducting target practice on the living challenged. When Union forces entered the city on July 3, hundreds of zombies were roaming the streets, many in Confederate Army uniforms trying to blend in to survive. Union soldiers started killing and they quickly found out that zombies, unlike soldiers, do not surrender. In the end, an estimated 2000 zombies were destroyed at Vicksburg, almost as many as were killed in the Battle of Bull Run.

  Only one entry per person is permitted. No group projects are permitted; only one artist may submit each artwork.

Produce your artwork on the contest theme in any drawing or video.  Computer-generated art is acceptable. All work must be the original, unique creation of the artist submitting the artwork. No work that has been directly copied from any published source, or which includes such material, may be submitted. 

Artwork that has been previously published or exhibited is not permitted.

You may enter your artwork either by posting it in the blog or via a message directly to me.  

Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting the artwork. It may not contain copyrighted material, such as popular songs, magazine cutouts, music videos, etc..., unless permission has been granted for its use. Use of copyrighted material without permission automatically disqualifies the entry.

• To enter online, photograph or scan your artwork into the computer. If you do not have a digital camera or scanner, try visiting a "Print & Copy Center" type of business for help.    It is suggested that the artwork be between 600 by 900 and 1200 by 1800 pixels in size.   .
•    Your entry must be received by 04/30/2008. Artwork mailed to savezombies becomes the property of savezombies.com.  .

All reproduction rights to all of the submitted artwork will remain with the artists. However, all prizewinners shall agree that Savezombies.com is granted non-exclusive reproduction rights for savezombies advertising, promotion, print publication, and Internet purposes. Savezombies.com agrees not to sell any of the artwork, or any reproduction, unless an additional agreement is reached with the artist involved. Savezombies.com also will refer any inquiries regarding sale or other use of the art directly to the artist.

Judging

  Judging will start on 5/01/08 Art will be judged on the artwork’s articulation of the contest theme, creativity, and artistic merit.   Judging will be done by a random group of talented judges.

 Judging decisions are final and may not be appealed.

Dates

All dates refer to Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5 hours). Savezombies.com must receive all entries no later than 11:59 p.m. on 04/30/08. Savezombies.com cannot be responsible for entries that are late due to computer malfunction, or for entries that are lost, delayed, or damaged in transit.

Judging will take place on 5/01/08Following judging, the Grand Prize Winner will be notified of his or her status privately by e-mail and/or myspace message. Contest winner  and their artwork  will be posted on http://www.myspace.com/stopzombiegenocide and savezombies.com 

Prizes

 Savezombies.com reserves the right to replace any prize with one of equal or greater value.
