RHESUS is taking a break PART II Hey tous le monde... Ca va etre emouvant & rocknroll. take care, AURé

Current mood: nostalgic
Hello everyone,
So this is it folks! We have two more concerts and then our gigantic tour reachs the final ending. RHESUS will then take a break. To be honest, i have no idea if we'll ever be back. I gave up trying to put into words why, it just happened. A band is a complicated animal, really. You know these moments in life like, you wake up one morning and you realize you don't love your girlfriend anymore? And you're sitting on the bed like an idiot. but it's there and it's not going away? As a consequence the last year of touring has been really hard for me. My heart's not at it anymore. I know some of you will not understand but in the end: i just want to be happy! I want to be a happy idiot again! And if it involves selling prawns on a smelly boat like forest gump then who cares! So come and see us play in february & march, damnit. Do not let us play these last two shows in front of 25 people. I swear if you do i will send the russian mafia after each & every one of you.
Finally, here's a little song i wrote in 5min today after Simon changed the headline of our myspace to: 'No Presales Little Soldiers'. I thought it was pretty cool. A year ago, we played a show in germany, in like a rather big venue outdoor. The day we arrived, the girl taking care of organizing stuffs walked to us when she saw our bus coming: 'Guys i'm sorry, there's almost no pre sales for tonight...!' Since then, everytime we fear we're going to play in front of 5 people, we joke about beeing greeted by the venue booker as: 'Are you the band with no pre-sales?' So this is it. (weeeee, see how good i am at telling rhesus jokes!) I hope you appreciate it, i took great care of mixing in it in THX 5.1 (+got it mastered really quick at sterlingsound) so if you have a really expensive speakers system, you will be able to hear things in 3D etc, it's breathtaking really. rhesus_nopresaleslittlesoldiers.mp3So that's it i guess..

So it's wednesday see! friends! this week i'm on time! weird.
I was listening to all of our songs yesterday. Trying to pick one for today. Wasn't too easy. Seems like i have so much to say on each of these little babies.
Talk Talk Talk
If i had to keep one song. only one song, it would be this one. This is clearly the one i'm the most proud of. Not necesseraly the performance, or the recording, or whatever. just the song. I can still picture me playing it, in 10years, whether it's to my children or to a thousand people haha! you can play it on a ukulele, on a piano, on a guitar, anyway you want. it doesn't rely on a performance, energy, some instrument gimmick, a drum pattern or a sound texture. i remember i wrote & recorded it in my room one night in less than one hour. the complete song just poured out of nowhere in its final state almost instantly. it rarely happens like that, but there, it did. it's such a strange feeling. knowing that you just wrote something that you know is good. and it's done, it's complete, it lives by itself as it is. but you're the only person in the world to know about it at that very precise moment. that's probably the best thing about writing songs. it's that moment. it's not when you have hundreds of people singing it back to you, no (not that it happened anyway..) it's beeing in the privacy of your little room. a few minutes after it's recorded/written. i was playing the song to myself over and over and over and over for almost an hour. staring outside my window, at the time, i was living under the roof in some weird apartement at the top of a building. the story behind the song is pretty simple, i had a correspondence with a girl at the time. we were writing each others every day. each day we were writting longer and longer stuffs. not the usual online flirting rubbish. we were sharing stories, pictures we had floating in our minds, useless little details of our everyday lives. it seemed like we never ran out of things to say. it was lovely. i grew quite addicted to it really fast. it was like we were doing some kind of personal diary ping-pong. what's weird is i wasnt really into the person. more into our writtings. i know it doesn't make any sense but.. all the things we were sharing were feeding me with so much ideas to write about. in almost every letters we sent each others i picked a sentence here and there that eventually ended up in a song. so after a few weeks, i was sitting in front of my computer like the little nerd that i am. strumming my guitar. and i wrote that song, just like i would write her something. instead it ended up in a song. still now, i still have a few really inspiring correspondences with some great people. i need them. sometimes i write these long messages and i'm like. 'woha shit, i just wrote a song' haha! i wrote a lot of them like that. when i'm just staring at a blank piece of paper with my guitar on my sofa, nothing happens. it's like i'm totally empty. but when it sounds like i'm communicating with someone, words just pour out of me like magic.
I think the first time i played the song to the others was during some kind of indoor acoustic showcase in switzerland when we were touring with a great singersongwriter called SydMatters.
We started working on it when we began working on our first album Sad Disco. let me tell you that wasn't easy. was so frustrating. we couldn't manage to find a proper way for the three of us to play it. it wouldn't work. we weren't really used to these kind of waltz groove. every try sounded like an average pop song. the feeling was totally lost. it always sounded like a bad-remix. we did a first band-demo that wasn't too bad, but it's almost like it was another song. we couldn't find a way to let the melody drive the song. everytime we were blocked. it was either the drum leading the way killing the melody, or a great guitar arpegio that made you totally forget about the song itself. we tried so many versions...i remember trying on the piano, a vibraphone version.. we were saying 'well if we find nothing, we'll just record the acoustic version'. then one day while we were working in our rehearsal room, we finally found a way. it seems so easy when i listen to it now. the guitar and the singing is just like the demo. the same chords, the same structure, the same way to strum the guitar. but i can tell you at the time it wasn't haha. i think we eventually got out of this haze when simon found that really quiet lovely drum pattern for the verse. it gave tons of room for the melody and the singing, and that was it. you could play the demo over his drums and that would work. it was just perfect. it's one of my favorite piece of rhesus-drumming ever. it's not your regular waltz-pattern or whatever. i don't know. it's simon. haha :)
these days i have this fantasy of doing another version of the song. with huge floor-tom rolls, a brass ensemble and all but with a great acoustic feel, a bit like Calexico. i might try one day. who knows?

Hello everyone. I'm sorry i'm late. I'm always late. Yes. Sometimes i'm so late that people think i'm dead. haha I'm the kind to leave at 8:30 when i have to BE somewhere at 8:30 . classic. i can't help. I think it's genetic. I'm sure it'll be fun when i'm 80. Running late for my bingo game. 'That's okay, he's always late'. Only to find out i had a stroke in my huge limo. drinking coktails, pimping with big tits blonde girls by my sides. what a cool way to die. haha i better stop watching that playboy mansion shit on MTV.
Anyway, enough nonsense. so..err..yes, Song Of The Week!!
'Shooting Star' shooting star... It's one of these song you don't really remember how it managed to grow from a 2min demo to a 6min monster. Ha we were young and hungry. yes yes.. It was quite a strange time for me. No, not strange in a ghostbuster way. I was totally glued to a girl who did nothing but complicate my pathetic teenager's life. I was blindly, stupidly in love with her. The whole situation was so naive, yet beautiful, haha, really. Every 2 min spent with that girl inspired me a song. Yes, that's how desperate i was. 4 songs on Meanwhile (at) The Party and 3 on Sad Disco. (i know what you think, that's a lot of songs for 14min of a teenage heartache) but i was SO into it. i could feel that huge knife tearing all my inside apart everytime i heard her on the phone or saw here somewhere. I even left a cd, in her postbox. early in the morning. with 3 or 4 songs (i can't remember). that felt so heroic at the time. haha I was 20y/o, but in my heart, i still was that 8y/o kid following the prettiest school girl from afar. hoping to catch a glimpse of something...i don't know what i was doing!! haha. really weird memories. thinking of it, it's almost like it never happened. Like it was someone else. This song was written after some student party in some small apartment. She was there obviously, and you could write things on the wall for the guy or girl having its birthday. Not a big deal i know, but i always get inspired by stupid little details. I still think that 'He's just a lonely boy sadly looking at this lovely toy' is one of the finest piece of lyrics i ever wrote.
I wrote and recorded the first demo right after coming home. I remember the scene quite clearly. I can picture my old apartment exactly. The first version was really really quiet in some kind of Arab Strap way. I still think it's beautiful. There are days where i think the demo was 10 times more powerful, emotionally speaking. And days when i think the band version is 10 times superior. Go figure.
The instrumental at the end of the song is definitly our finest 'band' moment. I don't think we ever topped that afterward. We never even came close, clearly. It just happened. It's such a mix of burning feelings and mixed-up situations. I'm not saying everything we did afterward sucked. It's just, i mean, that kind of dreamy reverby jam, It never ever happened again. Not like that, and it never will. It's going to sound really cheesy but i see it as a first kiss. You can work on it. You can still love a person from the bottom of your heart. But you'll never ever get that electric shock that you had the very very first time. You can approach it. but that's all. And i'm so glad that we managed to catch that on a record. it's such a perfect polaroid.
I remember when we recorded it. We didn't quite exactly know how long it was supposed to be and stuffs...it was like sailing a little boat in the middle of a stormy ocean. and luckily we survived. I like it because the little guitar melody, and the drums, and the bass going round and round... it grows endlessly, it's more powerful than any perfect piece of lyrics. anyway..
We still play that song live. It's the only one we still play from that EP.
Everytime we play it, it's like a little time-travel. It's like i'm playing the song for me, only me. It brings so many memories back, good or bad.
2003, we were 22. gosh, we're getting old haha. okay, i have to leave for my bingo game. see you next week,
Aurélien

Hey folks, so these days i've had some great correspondences with really neat people about music, and so i thought i'd do this 'song of the week' thing.
pretty simple: every week a new song, and a little story for the road. haha "You & Me" Probably the heaviest, rockiest, angriest song we ever wrote. haha! we used to end all our shows during the sad disco tour and early fortune teller tour with this song, simon standing on his kit, and me smashing my guitars on the floor in sort of a grunge revival moment. we eventually stopped playing it after my guitars got totally wasted. and my knees started to hurt too. never a good thing. yes, trying to act like a rockstar can be bad for your health. and i'm not only talking about the beer belly. haha
You & Me is a song about incest, beeing abused a child. not really an easy subject but one i was confronted to so many times in the last really important relationships i had. Thinking of it, it's really weird. These are always such a mix of crazy & complex wounded people. fascinating & depressing. I heard you keep chosing the same people over & over again during your life. unconsciously. for some reason so far i haven't been proved wrong. really strange. i mean, do i only get along with people who've had totally weird childhood?!
anyway, i remember i had the main guitar riff for a while. i even had the idea of the drum on the verse, but that was it, i remember us beeing stuck on that one for quite long. jamming for hours waiting for some magic moment where some chorus would happen, but it never did. luckily magic happened during some rehearsal break, where traditionally every one go takes a piss and do the allmighty girlfriend call. haha me and laura were just jamming around and she started to play that sort of 'reggae' bassline which became the bridge, and which i thought sounded like The Police. that was truly like, totally unexpected. especially from laura beeing more of a new wave fan. haha i think we almost completed the song in the afternoon afterward. she saved us!! and totally made the song. And don't get me started on her backing vocals. brilliant, just brilliant.
Our long time friend & sound engineer Fred keeps making jokes about the song saying it's a Rolling Stones ripoff. I always thought that the chords progression was totally stolen from elliott smith. who cares anyway? it's not like we sold 10 millions of it right? haha
After we were done recording & mixing it in Belgium, i remember the studio owner, which is a really cool & crazy blind man stepping in the mixing room saying: 'guys, there you go, you've got a single!' yeah, eventually we were proven wrong later in the year haha but definitly good memories. okay, gosh that was long! see you next week!
