thanks to everyone for a brilliant last night. daniel haywood's new hawks, mary hampton, alasdair roberts (with alistair the fiddler) , and diane cluck equaled perfect send off.
and even the wonderful nancy elizabeth was in the audience.
and just from a personal point of view i loved that diane cluck ended it all, her music and words are something special.
this myspace is going to stay up..because hopefully in a years time it will be the myspace for a new night, under a new name. we shall see.
thanks thanks thanks.
magic.
i'll post some photos from the last night here soon...

"Folk-rock visionary's stunning treasure. Alasdair Roberts has
delivered his strongest work to date. Here, percussionist Alex Neilson,
former Appendix Out colleagues, sundry Finnish outsiders and a baroque
guitarist hoe out a swinging, peaty folk-rock patch where Roberts can
sow his reed-voiced songs. He is on fire lyrically, drawing on mystical
poetry, Celtic legend, Renaissance exploration and Eastern philosophy
to explore the ills of modern society, culminating in the 'scurvy
dream' of "Ned Ludd's Rant (for a World Rebarbarised)". - Uncut
“In an unguarded moment a PR of my acquaintance called
Alasdair Roberts a “genius”. She’d taken a drink, but if one of the
ingredients of genius is to see beyond the beyond and achieve
brilliance in hitherto unimagined areas of art and endeavour, then it
may not be such a fanciful notion… Spoils is back to his unyieldingly
scary best… it is a beautiful, disquieting, comic, twisted, bizarre,
riveting masterpiece.” - fRoots
"Roberts has found a new way to remake the traditions that are folk's
primary fuel. The eight songs on Spoils are lengthy with intricately
folded structures, backed by a large, shapeshifting backing cast
including drummer Alex Neilson - almost an earthier version of Joanna
Newsom's Ys... some of the weirdest wordplay this side of Damo Suzuki,
Doom or Scott Walker". - The Wire “Roberts’ fifth solo album is his best; purists’ anxieties
about authenticity are rendered irrelevant simply by its being
brilliant.” – The Sunday Times Culture
“…a mix of lively jigs and dense fable… highlights are the whirling
storm ‘Hazel Forks’ and ‘Under No Enchantment (But My Own)’, all
strings and pastoral idyll.” – The Observer

As the line up for the final LAWM has now been announced we are no longer taking any more gig inquiries. Apologies to the people we were never able to put on.
Please check back in 2010 when there may be a new night up and running from the people that brought you LAWM.
Just to recap for anyone not in the know. LAWM will finish on June 12th - the 50th LAWM gig. This has been planned for quite some time. I need a rest and have a busy year doing other things...There will be a much more substantial message in June. I have a LOT of people to thank!

LAWM presents legends of New York’s DIY scene Schwervon!
SCHWERVON! (USA) In a big coup for Lancaster, LAWM has booked New York’s Schwervon! to play the penultimate LAWM night. SCHWERVON! have been major players in New York City's famous diy music scene for 10 years, regularly playing with the likes of Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson (The Moldy Peaches), and comprising the talents of Major Matt Mason (guitar, vocals) and Nan Turner (drums, vocals). Musically they are the missing link between classic US indie bands such as Pixies, The Breeders, Sleater Kinney and Belly and the NYC diy scene - Jeffrey Lewis, The Moldy Peaches etc. Marrying all that together and you have one of the best bands around anywhere...
They started making up songs soon after they met amongst the fertile Indie Rock gutters of New York City, with Nan pounding the drums (learning to play, she figured, would happen as she went along - which it did) and Matt reawakening his high school electric guitar rockability. Their music is a celebration of imperfect love through jagged rock minimalism. Sometimes they write lyrics on the train. Sometimes they steal lines from eavesdropping on other people's conversations. They were DIY long before it was a marketing strategy, mixing and recording the bulk of their music in their cramped little apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
"Like the White Stripes if they’d been raised on the records of 80s indie heroes The Wedding Present rather than Blind Willie McTell ones, New York boy/girl duo Schwervon! peddle a natty guitar drum rock'n'roll racket, substituting bass frequencies for gleeful indie pop aceness." - NME

THE LOVELY EGGS By special request of Schwervon! they are supported by Lancaster’s The Lovely Eggs (who they met when they were on tour in the States last year). Easily Lancaster’s most successful band of recent times, they comprise couple Dave on drums, and Holly on guitar/vocals. With two BBC sessions behind them and XFM record of the week, their cute and hilarious indie rock/pop sounds have begun to attract national attention. The Lovely Eggs are playful with an underlying seriousness that may be a ruse or a joke, but either way everyone is laughing and having a good time. A number of instruments and non instruments are used to make the childlike sounds that accompany the grownup sensibilities of their music, with the usual guitar/ drum coming along for the ride. If you like crayons and Lego and little plastic animals then you will love The Lovely Eggs. If you don't like these things you've probably forgotten what it is like to be vulnerable and innocent and probably need reminding, so you should listen to them too.
