Thrash-death duro e puro quello proposto dai Deathwork con il loro "Evolve To Extinguish", album decisamente devoto ai maestri del genere quali Sepultura e Bolt Thrower. La band nasce a Catania nel giugno 2002 e muove i primi passi suonando inizialmente thrash in stile Bay Area e successivamente dirigendo il proprio sound verso sonorità più dure, suonando thrash-death vecchio stile con influenze grind ed arrivando a pubblicare, dopo essersi fatta un nome nella scena underground locale, il loro primo lavoro "Dissolution Of Eternity", demo risalente al 2003.
A distanza di due anni i Deathwork tornano quindi alla ribalta e lo fanno con un Ep di tutto rispetto che pur non facendo gridare al miracolo soprattutto in termini di originalità, rappresenta comunque un gran bel lavoro.
Le sonorità proposte sono quelle già descritte, con la band capace di assimilare alla perfezione la lezione impartita dai gruppi storici del genere, il tutto riproposto con una certa personalità senza commettere l'errore di molte bands emergenti del genere, capaci solo di copiare pedissequamente i vari mostri sacri senza aggiungere niente al genere di riferimento.
Dopo una breve intro parte la title-track in cui i Deathwork dimostrano di saperci fare alla grande con un riff iniziale in pieno thrash-style cui si accompagna la voce infernale del singer Fabrizio Malaponte assolutamente mostruoso ed una band capace di rendere il brano molto vario nei suoi 5 minuti di durata grazie a bei cambi di ritmo ed un'ottima tecnica strumentale. Si fanno sentire anche le influenze grind citate dalla band in particolare con la successiva "Deranged Sanity" che parte con un ritmo tremendo ed un cantato sempre più duro e veloce, spezzato subito dopo da un riff che riporta la band sui propri binari. Sia chiaro però che pur sempre di thrash-death si tratta, e proprio per questo balza all'orecchio come i Deathwork riescano con una certa naturalezza ad inserire le proprie influenze senza per questo snaturare il sound proposto.
Merita menzione a parte anche "My Own War" brano che chiude un album micidiale che mostra una band giovane e con ottime prospettive per il futuro. Un lavoro che non potrà che piacere agli amanti del genere, unica cosa da eccepire è la troppa omogeneità della proposta con le songs che forse si somigliano un pò troppo tra di loro, ma è un particolare facile da correggere e comunque tutti i brani proposti si lasciano tranquillamente ascoltare senza annoiare l'ascoltatore.
Ultima menzione per l'artwork, veramente ben fatto in pieno stile thrash-death tardi anni '80.

E' vero che non si giudica mai un album dalla copertina, ma essendo un fan dei film di "Terminator" non posso negare che l'artwork di questo demo ha subito conquistato la mia simpatia.  I Deathwork si definiscono una thrash/death metal band, ma ascoltando il loro demo credo che questa loro definizione musicale risulti un pò riduttiva; riecheggiano infatti diverse influenze di quello speed/thrash anni '80 stile primi Anthrax / Death Angel unite, ovviamente, a quel death metal "made in America" stile Morbid Angel (la prima cosa che ho pensato sentendo la voce di Fabrizio fu "Altars Of Madness"). Ciò che mi ha colpito molto nel disco, e che fin'ora non sentivo da ANNI, è quel suono effetto "vinile" che i Deathwork trasmettono nella loro registrazione e che fa ricordare i tempi d'oro del thrash ... sicuramente un fattore molto piacevole. Tornando alla proposta musicale del combo di Catania, mi sorge spontaneo una sorta di punto interrogativo; le idee sono buone e credo che le canzoni in sede live siano delle "strappa pogo", ma a mio parere il gruppo deve lavorare ancora un pò su come amalgamare meglio queste idee all'interno dei propri pezzi (ad esempio, la title track ha un inizio di puro thrash da headbanging ma circa a metà sfuma su una sorta di falsariga evitabile dei primi Metallica, inoltre secondo me il gruppo dovrebbe diminuire gli stacchi di basso nelle canzoni). Nessuno nasce maestro e dato l'impegno con cui i ragazzi portano avanti il loro progetto non avranno difficoltà a risolvere queste piccole imperfezioni. The Last Defilement rulez...

Questa breve norma , volta a riassumere l'essenza del capolavoro dello scrittore inglese John Anthony Burgess; ("A clockwork orange", che divverà "Arancia Meccanica" in Italia) potrebbe con facilità essere applicata ad "Evolve To Extinguish" , secondo lavoro dei siciliani Deathwork, nato due anni dopo il primo demo degli stessi "Dissolution of Eternity".
L'Ep in questione contenente sei tracce fatte di puro Death Metal, che non disdegna puntate nel Grind ,è un ottimo esempio di come alcune sonorità nate ormai da più di una decade, possano ancora oggi risultare maledettamente trascinanti.
Una breve intro apre l'album cedendo il posto alla titletrak, ottima nel suo incedere , che si fa virulento , serrato, pur senza mai perdere il groove di base, (dato dal riffing Thrash) tendenza questa, che resta costante per tutto il disco.
Le due tracce successive: "Deranged Sanity" e "The Last Defilement", ribadiscono gli intenti dei Deathwork; creando un vero e proprio muro sonoro, la prima dai forti accennti Grind e la seconda dove le ritmiche Thrash la fanno da padrone, su tutto le fragorose growl vocals di Fabrizio Malaponte, vero e proprio punto di forza dei catanesi.
Alternante parti lente e marce ad assalti frontali senza fronzoli "Buried By The Dark" è il pezzo che più mi ha riportato alla mente le prime realese dei Sepultura ed alcune cose dei Master di Paul Speckmann, vero e proprio iniziatore di un certo tipo di sonorità dedite all'estremo, con "My Own War"si chiude un Ep killer, che riporta in primo piano uno spaccato di storia del Death Metal, quello degli albori , senza tecnicismi esasperati o infulenze varie che spesso hanno snaturato tale genere nato unicamente per fare del male.
In conclusione una prova ben riuscita per i Deathwork che pone solide basi sulle quali la band non potrà che crescere.

Groupe Italien assez jeune (ils se sont formés en 2002) mais pourtant bourré de talent, DEATHWORK est ce qu'on pourrait appeler "groupe à surveiller". Malgré que "Evolve..." soit leur deuxième enregistrement uniquement, on peut noter une aisance technique indéniable, et un sens de la composition qui fait défaut à tant de jeunes groupes. Les morceaux sont bien structurés, n'hésitant pas à passer d'un mid tempo pesant et puissant à des parties plus rapides où la virtuosité des gratteux peut s'exprimer pleinement. Le chant est un poil en deçà, mais rien de bien préoccupant quand on considère leur marge d'évolution. Un honnête disque de Thrash Death, qui ne restera pas des mois dans votre platine, mais qui offre un aperçu alléchant de ce que peut devenir DEATHWORK. Du travail, un label, et le plus dur sera fait !

New EP of Italian death thrashers Deathwork. After their nice "Dissolution Of Eternity" demo worked 2 years on this EP. Fast songs that are changing tempos regularly and also not afraid to play melody in the songs. Double bassdrums are the backbone for the rasping guitarriffs. Also leads are played which is necessary in this style. Vocals are brutal but could use some high screams. The lack of originality is not offencive but they play nice tunes that are solid and hard. Nice EP for enjoyable 25 minutes...

Parlando via e-mail con Fabrizio Malaponte, il vocalist dei catanesi Deathwork, mi ha detto che il loro lavoro, essendo stato registrato in presa diretta, non avrebbe avuto le qualità di una registrazione professionalissima... Beh, alla faccia del cazzo!! "Evolve To Extinguish", secondo lavoro per questa band siciliana, è a dir poco massacrante, e supportato da una produzione sorprendente (almeno per quanto a questo punto mi aspettavo)!!! Ma passiamo alla recensione vera e propria di "Evolve To Extinguish", che parte, dopo una breve intro, con la title-track. Ed a quanto pare il Thrash/Death sta quasi diventando un affare prettamente italico, visto che dopo Subhuman e Subliminal Crusher, scopriamo un'altra band, i Deathwork, per l'appunto, che tirano fuori un lavoro eccezionale per violenza, compattezza e freschezza compositiva. A colpire è la varietà dei pezzi, visto che si passa dall'opener, nella quale non vengono disprezzati episodi Swedish (specie per quanto riguarda il riffwork chitarristico), a, per esempio, "Derange Sanity", fortemente 'influenzata' da un sound di matrice Floridiano. E questo continuo mix fra due stili che sono comunque così differenti, sarà la colonna portante di questo EP. Brani come "The Last Defilement" o la conclusiva "My Own War" promettono dal vivo un'autentica carneficina! Ormai si sta aprendo una vera e propria scuola di Italic Thrash Death Metal, ed i Deathwork entrnao di diritto nel lotto della bands che questo genere lo sanno suonare decisamente bene. Con queste premesse, questa passione e l'umiltà che, vi posso assicurare, sanno metterci, questi cinque ragazzi di strada ne faranno. Ooohh se ne faranno!!

Secondo lavoro per i siciliani Deathwork autori un paio di anni fa di un demo tanto interessante quanto migliorabile sotto molti aspetti. Missione compiuta quindi per i cinque incazzatissimi isolani che con questo nuovo " Evolve To Extinguish " più che gettarsi di testa in meri territori death-metal tendono ad estremizzare e dilaniare partiture tipicamente Bay-area style, salvo le misurate svisate grind di " Deranged Sanity " e " Way To The Void " dove infernali vocals e blast-beat da infarto non lasciano un attimo di respiro. Nella title-track e " Buried By The Dark " i Deathwork riescono nell'intento di amalgamare con profitto un perpetuo e annichilente drumming con un riff-rama ricco e svariato tanto da riportare alla memoria due bands storicamente diverse tra loro come i Testament (vedi il tipico basso in prima linea alla 'Practice What You Preach') e i dissacranti Sodom di 'Persecution Mania' e 'Agent Orange'. Monoliticità e furia cieca anche per la conclusiva " My Own War " che conferma i grossi passi avanti compiuti dalla band soprattutto per quanto concerne la produzione, l'artwork, la qualità della registrazione e il songwriting, qui decisamente più maturo e geometrico rispetto al passato. Volendo si potrebbe fare ancora meglio ma per ora va benissimo così.

DEATHWORK hails from Italy & play a good mixture of Death Metal & Thrash metal music. The music has an old school Metal vibe of the two combined styles. There are some new Metal influences that appear through out their songs as well as some Grindcore type parts too. There are some cool all out shredding & blasting parts along with some quick change ups. The vocals are done in a mid ranged Thrash/Death crossover style. This is the bands second CD release to date. These guys reminded me of some of the great bands like EXODUS, KREATOR, SODOM & even a litlle DESTRUCTION at times! Fans of these bands will most likely enjoy DEATHWORK !!!

Italian thrash metal (with some death metal backgrounds) tends to stand up well in a competitive scene and Deathwork don't let the side down. The music delivered throughout the six tracks of what appears to be the band' second studio experience is generic fast paced thrash death metal in the Italian vein with some nice solo guitar actions. The band can play well and keep things interesting with compact songs with varied tempos and lotsa accelerated parts (sometimes reminiscent of the American old school thrash metal wave). The Italian act can certainly mature a lot in the future to come (I enjoyed this demo quite a lot but at the end I will have to admit that they don't bring in something really original nor personal) but this piece of furious thrash metal is already a very nice surprise. Promising.

Diese italienische Death/Thrash-Kapelle haut mit "Evolve to extinction" ihre zweite Demo-Veröffentlichung nach dem "Dissolution of eternity"-Demo 2003 raus. Insgesamt werden hier 6 Songs mit einer Spielzeit von knapp 22 Minuten geboten, die nicht viel von modernen einflüssen halten und sich hauptsächlich an Einflüssen aus den 80ern und frühen 90ern auslassen. Geboten wird recht prügeliger Thrash/Death, der altbekanntes Riffing mit enormem Thrash-Touch bietet und vom hektischen Geprügel meist eher an Bands wie die alten MASSACRA erinnert. Ab und zu kommt dann wie im Rausschmeisser "My own war" auch mal die Doublebass mehr zum Einsatz und obendrauf gibts heisere Death-Metal Vocals mit nicht gerade viel Wumms im Organ. Die Soli sind total verzichtbar und halbgar dudelig, der Sound geht klar, zieht aber auch nicht die Wurst vom Teller und die Songs sind nur wirklichen Old-School Fans zu empfehlen. Man kann nicht sagen, daß das Material einförmig oder langweilig ist aber "Evolve to extinction" klingt wie eine 10-15 Jahre zu späte Scheibe, auf der man so
ziemlich jeden Ton schon mal in gleicher Form irgendwoanders gehört hat. Muß man nicht haben und ich als Old-School Banause bin eh froh, daß ich nun nach 20 Minuten durch bin mit dem Ding.

Ecco l'ennesima dimostrazione che anche al sud la scena metal è fiorente, eccome! Anzi, per molti versi mi viene da pensare che sia anche la migliore nazionale, ma non importa, non siamo qui per fare nessuna gara fra nord e sud, ma per parlare dei grandi Deathwork! Autori sul nascere di un thrash metal Bay Area style poi evoluto nel Thrash Death metal che sentiamo in questo "Evolve to extinguish", i siciliani prima si muovono nella scena underground italiana con un serio lotto di pezzi propri composti nel 2003, per poi rientrare in studio per la consacrazione su questo cd, composto di sei pezzi in puro stile death thrash come dichiarato. A partire dai suoni di chitarra, propriamente thrash con quelle "zanzarone" sulle chitarre, passando per la batteria pulita e precisa di Armando Alioto e dal basso incalzante e forse un po' troppo sottile di Riccardo Costantino, si intraprende un viaggio che attraversa gli anni novanta: infatti non siamo di fronte a un gruppo che vorrebbe riesumare gli anni ottanta come molti altri a mio avviso. Questi Deathwork propongono qualcosa di personale, influenzato certo dai grandi gruppi quali Kreator, Sodom, Slayer, Overkill e spesso anche dai primi Sepultura soprattutto per quanto riguarda la voce impostata in generale comunque molto sul growl basso, ma con pur sempre qualcosa di originale, una punta molto percettibile di personalità inconfondibile. Come pezzo rappresentativo di questo lavoro sceglierei "Way to the void", un pezzo di breve durata ma contenente tutto quello che i Deathwork vogliono esprimere con la loro musica: riff spezzaossa, assolo "pazzo" alla Slayer, growls infernali e tanta velocità e pesantezza. Un macigno! Particolarmente consigliato a chi vuole riscoprire le sonorità dei primi anni novanta rivisitate in chiave moderna…

I never used to receive so many extreme releases from Italy so when i got the new demo CD from Deathwork , i was really curious to hear it. From the first song to the last one, the band plays a tribute to the Gods of 80's thrash metal but they didn't stop in this spot, they have included some other elements from death metal and they have made one step forward with their compositions which are well worked with interesting ideas. Definitely their main influence is the thrash metal and you can easily understand it. From the drum parts to the guitar work everything is thrash metal here. For sure sometimes we want to hear something new, but also sometimes we have a dream to hear something old school. Deathwork had some very good songs and for sure many of the thrash metal fans will adore their newest work. Just follow your heart and hear the stuff from Deathwork and you won't be disappointed. Of course they could have written some better stuff but with a little bit more hard working they will have some really good results. I will wait for their next step.

...and the bands from Italy keep coming... Deathwork is yet another metal band from the land of spaghetti and pizza working its way out of that so crowded Italian scene. These 5 guys from Catania are present now in Tempest with their second release, a self-released MCD filled with good rhythms for the ones of you nostalgics about the end of the '80's - beginnings of the '90's metal scene. They are playing the same genre since their foundation in 2002, and that would be an aggressive and fast kind of thrash death, or how I like to call this blend deathrash. Their music is plain and simple old-styled and there are no touches of modern scene inhere, so if you are into old Pestilence, Dismember or Bolt Thrower you might give it a try. I very much enjoyed their rhythmical section which is pounding, fast, powerful and reminds me of the good ol' days. The vocals of Fabrizio are a combination of Benediction and Bolt Thrower, and yes, as there is stated on their bio, they have a few touches of grind too, but those are so few that you can't really sense them unless you listen very carefully. So, after the listening session I can say I have another good and very promising band from Italy reviewed in Tempest which makes me proud. As a PS I would ad that if this CD was released 20 years ago it would have been a highlight of the genre! Unfortunately for them, we are now almost in 2006, so there's a very little category of metalheads still listening to deathrash.

Attivi da circa 4 anni i catanesi Deathwork arrivano al secondo lavoro in studio con il preciso intento di piazzarsi con merito nella scena underground italiana, "Evolve to extinguish" è un demo cd che contiene 6 tracks, una buona proposta che evidenzia il potenziale della band, le capacità musicali e un idea death/thrash metal che fa della potenza la sua virtù, con un tagliente tecnicismo delle guitars nel riffing, e una sessione ritmica devastante. La prova dei Deathwork è molto buona, la band ha sicuramente le carte in regola per fare un buon percorso, l'unica cosa che ci permettiamo di raccomandare alla band è quella di sviluppare una maggiore longevità nel songwriting, ancora troppo legata ai classici schemi dei generi citati, quindi ancora troppo poco personale ed esclusiva, ma si sa, spesso le band al debutto dimostrano quanto sanno fare clonando un po' le influenze musicali, la speranza è che, a maturità acquisita i Deathwork possano dare una lettura tutta propria al genere e rappresentare quindi un valido momento d'incontro per tanti estimatori metallari, potenzialmente questa band può senza dubbio attirare al proprio seguito un cospicuo numero di intenditori, la buona prova di "Evolve to extinguish" è una base di partenza che rimane in attesa di futuri sviluppi, auguriamo alla band buon lavoro certi che, per quanto dimostrato, i Deathwork possono fare davvero un interessante cammino musicale.

This is a good Italian band of Thrash Death Metal, relatively new, formed in 2002. About the presentation I can say that it is well printed, full coloured and contains a lot of rawness, an approving mark for these guys in the presentation. The first theme begins with a brief intro where an undergravelike voice (computerized effect) spit unrepeatable sentences. It gives us the raw welcome the first theme titled like the MCD "Evolve to Extinguish", it has a slow tempo in the beginning, that gains speed as advances the theme, is a Thrash Metal become related to the Bay Area, it has even some melodic parts. We follow with "Deranged Sanity", now without hesitation a corrupt power attack to us, without warning a fast and much more violent, Thrash metamorphosed in Death Metal, the bass more powerful than ever, it's very refreshing, my respect for Mr. Riccardo Costantino. Soon arrives "The Last Defilement", more rhythmic, kind of boring perhaps (it gives that impression because the previous theme was very forceful), but it's not bad, actually in the end gives us good strokes of the brush! What I would do like is to listen to a better mix, I guess that the production came out a little badly, the vocal work of Fabrizio Malaponte go to waste. The fourth track is "Buried by the Dark", it begins in a supreme way, good mixture of instruments, I am excited while listen to it, this song made me an happy girl! Again DEATHWORK gives us a theme with airs of Death Metal, that is the style that fits better to the voice of Fabrizio, which do has potential, but it still needs to be worked; going back to the song, it has good changes, a Death with thrasher riffs, but pay attention, this is new school definitively. Armando Alioto shines not only for the great name that his parents gave him ;) but also in the following theme that seems to be composed specially for him, I talk about "Way to the Void" which has very good riffs, here if I feel old school pretensions, the changes of tempo in the drums are very refreshing. We close with "My Own War" that begins with a rhythmic tempo, quite Bay Area, but with a guttural voice and heaviness in the bass that stress the almost always present dose of Death. Tempo is becoming faster, blastbeats and maniac bass, this song born Thrash and die Death (sorry for the redundancy), I liked better the second part. This band is recommendable, they are young Italians with enough potential, they dominate their instruments, give yourself the opportunity to listen to them!!

... Italians are on the field of death/thrash metal with evident old school approach, and it's clear that they are pretty influential by the 90's period. They had introduced themselves with 6 tracks in, 22 minutes duration. A songs itself, as same as productional work, associate on mentioned 90's, and it's evident that band also psychologically covered that era. Technically they satisfied, but it's clear that they need a little more originalities. "Buried By The Dark" and "Way To The Void" are in my opinion 2 convinceble tracks. Maniristically, Deathwork has sounded as they expected, but in the future a better production and little more originality must be important part of their new releasing materials.

Deathwork present with their Full Lenght release Evolve to Extinguish a certain piece of good old school Death Metal, mostly in the veins of Asphyx, Cancer, and some Sinister. Everything is present, from double bass tracks, over mid-tempo parts to blast beats. Deathwork definitely ain't boring. It's good to se that there are some bands that still follow the old path, and even make a new pathway for those who would like to do the same.
Deathwork even has the old feeling which I miss in several bands that try to copy the Old School style of earlier '90-ties Death Metal bands, which means they incorporate some Trash, but only in pieces, it's still pure Death Metal, but Death Metal of the old, glory days. Fuck that, who says that old school Death Metal ain't the shit? Although I enjoy every in listening to newer and newer bands, I just can't forget about those great bands that made the way for those now at the top of the scene. And I am sure the older guys will listening to this feel some nostalgia, like I feel when I listen to Carcass' Necroticism or Symphonies Of Sickness (man, that is true old school!).
The songs have some dark themes, just like the older bands had, so here you got another comparison to the old days. The vibe ain't lost, the feeling for song structure is present. I am really curious for what strange reason these guys decided to play this kind of Death Metal, as the temporary scen is oversaturated with so many Brutal Death Metal bands, that it reeks of putrefaction. but I think they have chosen to go the other way and to get back to the roots.
Death Metal hasn't always been hyper-speed blast beats and triggered double bass tracks, there was a time when the musicians made music out of their hearts, seufz, I'm being now very nostalgic and pussy-like, but fuck it, you can't deny the fucking good vibe and groove you feel while listening to old Death, Obituary, Napalm Death, even Kreator (I grew up mostly with Carcass, Napalm and Kreator, so it doesn't surprise that I am still devoted to this kind of DM).
Do yourself a favour and get this, and you will see that you still have some demands for the old days, and as there is no Time Travel company, you can only get yourself this release, start to nod your head and enjoy fully, and I promise - you will enjoy. Other ways you are an either a newbie that just wants some fast and moronic music, like most Death Metal listeners of the "new era", or you are just stupid, and don't know what's good. This is definitely a goodie!

Molto buono il lavoro dei Catanesi Deathwork, attivi dal 2002 e autori nel 2003 di un demo "Dissolution Of Eternity", seguito nel 2005 dall'ep "Evolve To Extinguish", consistente in 6 tracce di buon thrash/death metal, non particolarmente innovativo ma "sincero" e ben suonato, senza "carinerie" e decisamente monolitico e potente.
I pezzi del mini cd si collocano a metà strada tra i Sepultura di "Schizophrenia" e i Sodom più puliti, alternando parti più lente e massicce a dei riff più tipicamente "bay area" con quell'aura rabbiosa "alla Sodom", che ben si sposano alla feroce e potente voce di Fabrizio. Le strutture dei brani si articolano su un tappeto ritmico particolarmente "Sepulturiano", costituito quindi da riff affilati e batteria in "fast tempos" costante, dove trovano spazio riff più particolarmente "thrashy" e accelerazioni "slayeriane". Anche la voce svolge un buon lavoro, unendosi alla potenza dei brani e regalandogli un tocco di aggressività in più. In generale, tutti i pezzi si mantengono sugli stessi buoni standard, senza dare un attimo di riposo all'ascoltatore e aggredendolo con la loro schiettezza e la loro rabbia. Soltanto nella terza canzone la voce va fuori tempo, inseguendo la batteria che procede lungo il riff, ma che subito si rinnesta nella giusta collocazione, e che rimane comunque l'unico sbaglio in una prova estremamente ben fatta. Un buonissimo prodotto, quindi, nel quale potrete respirare l'aria degli anni '80 e trovare tutta la sincerità e la rozza "attitudine" del vecchio thrash più diabolico, realizzato con passione e bravura, e che si presenta sicuramente come un buon biglietto da visita per il gruppo.. veramente un bellissimo lavoro.

Na ativa desde 2002 montada atraves de um projeto do vocalista Fabrizio Malaponte e do guitarrista Luigi Oreto surge a banda de Death-thrash Deathwork ao qual possuem uma levada bem Old School e tradicional. Evolve To Extinguish é o segundo trabalho da banda e mostra uma gravação bem profissional com uma excelente produção gráfica. Depois de uma breve intro o cd abre com a faixa titulo do álbum e de cara mostra a proposta da banda, mas é em Deranged Sanity que realmente vemos o potencial deste material em uma musica agressiva e rápida daquelas que foram feitas para bater a cabeça até cair e bangear até cansar. O que fica claro nas outras quatros faixas que compõe este registro do mais puro Death-thrash tradicional do underground italiano. Exelente trabalho. Confira.

This mini-cd hails from the death-thrash band Deathwork, which was formed in Italy in 2002. The cd contains 6 songs, with various speed and arrangements. The first track Evolve to extinguish, is a heavy thrasher song, with some great riffs. Some of the riffs on this song actually reminds me of the underground heroes Hydra Vein. The next track "deranged sanity", is more of a grind/death song. This illustrates one of the strongest issues about this band, they manage to create fast/brutal/heavy songs without repeating themselves. They've created a sound that actually quite unique. There's not much to pick on when it comes to musical abilities with these musicians. The guitarists create heavy riffs and melodic licks. They are backened by a great bass player, (which has been given the freedom to play some short bass solos) and drummer. But as always nothing is perfect. To me the vocals on some of the tracks could've been a little bit more diverse.Soundwise I would love to hear these songs with some more dynamic mixing. It's a little bit to downpitch for my taste. But, hey! The cd is great, and this band has what it takes.

"Evolve To Extinguish" is a six song EP by the Italian thrash / death metal band Deathwork. This CD is their second release and they already sound pretty good. Along with their death and thrash influences they do use a little old school sounding grind too. You could say it's an aggressive thrashy death style like Sadus, Death, Oppressor, Vader, Slayer, and Withered Earth. The songs aren't too complex but generally are catchy and fast-paced. A few of these riffs are pretty damn good; you can bludgeon your friends with them! Plenty of blast beats, and they weren't overused. Average death vocals, not much else to say about them. The solos are decent, but with a little more fluidity it could push these tracks higher! Deathwork has a raw death style production, maybe too raw. Could be more powerful with a cleaner production. Still, it does fit the music approach. If you like old school thrash/death metal you will want to check out Deathwork!

I Deathwork arrivano dalla Sicilia e dopo qualche anno di assestamento, dove nel 2003 danno alla luce il demo 'Dissolution Of Eternity' ci propongoo questo lavoro subblime che prende il nome di 'Evolve To Extiguish' datato 2005, nella bio in mio possesso sembra quasi si giustifichi la non perfezione (tipica delle registrazioni digitali) del suono analogico, Secondo il mio modesto parere invece il groove delle songs viene ulteriormente sollevato. Ma andando con ordine iniziamo da subito con l'analizzare l'EP: per quanto riguarda la parte grafica devo dire che è abbastanza d'effetto, buona grafica, forse un pò scontata e vagamente fuori tema ma comunque apprezzabile, Il bello viene per quanto riguarda la sostanza, il genere che i nostri ci propongo è un ottimo thrash death maturo e con ottime intuizioni, che spesso arrivano a soluzioni stilistiche che di volta in volta toccano il thrash bay area, il death old school e addirittura il black metal, senza però mai esagerare dimostrando un grande gusto e maturità per gli arrangiamenti ! Come dicevo prima la registrazione è azzeccatissima buoni suoni, comprensibili, chiaramente non digitali, ma che danno quella cattiveria ai pezzi che li esalta ulteriormente! Che dire ancora il CD consta di 6 pezzi davvero buoni, fatelo vostro e non ve ne pentirete! Il Thrash/Death non morirà mai sinchè continuano la tradizione gruppi come i DEATHWORK, vi aspettiamo alla prova del full con un contratto discografico in tasca.

I am glad to see that more and more new bands of the underground metal scene choose to make a turn towards the roots of heavy metal and create their own sound rather than copy the latest trends. Especially the Swedish sounding metalcore that rules in the U.S.A. has tired me a bit. Deathwork don't give a shit about the modern extreme metal scene and play a music that is closer to bands like SODOM, KREATOR, SLAYER, SACRED REICH and DEATH. Their compositions have a freshness and a good production that allows you to listen to all the instruments. These are some of the biggest advantages of this release. OK, the cliches exist here as well, but what kind of death/thrash metal release would it be if they didn't? In these 22 minutes and something of this EP, you will have the chance to listen to good thrash with a bit of U.S. death metal compositions. The fans of this genre have to check them out...

Nach der ersten Demo Dissolution of Eternity folgt nun 2 Jahre später die erste Ep der Deaththrasher aus dem Land der Pizza und des Papstes. Letzterer wird wohl kein Fan werden aber das macht wenig bis garnichts denn die Jungs sind auch so gut genug um Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Sehr Oldschoollastig kommt die Truppe daher, ohne Experimente aber dafür um so straighter. Technisch gekonnt gespielt und natürlich gegröhlt werden alle bedient, die auf das "alte Zeug" stehen. Live sind die bestimmt ne Granate. Sehr viel mehr ist eigentlich auch nicht über die Scheibe zu sagen0 also am besten selber mal ein Ohr oder auch zwei riskieren. Anspieltipps "Way to the Void" und "My own War".

This demo release is one year old, but as I received it not that long ago - why not to write a review? To be honest, after I heard the opening sounds with the awful flanger effect on the guitar, I though that it's not really something for me. But I was wrong, bloody hell, much wrong! Deathwork plays fuckin' great old school death metal with some thrash metal elements: if you can imagine a mixture of old good Sepultura (something from "Arise" era), Massacra (do you remember their incredible "Signs Of The Decline"?) and let's say Obituary, then less or more you can imagine what out Italian friends of Deathwork play. I totally love these old school headbanging rhythms, instead of ultra fast blast beats, I love their sound, I love their songs. I can sum it up only like that: if you are looking for a good death metal band for your label, then hurry up, Deathwork will not be free forever. Grrrreat!

Operata la doverosa premessa per cui il fatto che i Deathwork siano miei conterranei non ha influenzato minimamente il mio giudizio, mi accingo a recensire il loro secondo lavoro in studio. Quello che la band di Catania ci propone è una gradevole miscela di death e thrash old-school: i sei pezzi di "Evolve To Extinguish" sono tutti veloci e aggressivi con frequenti cambi di ritmo, accelerazioni e decelerazioni tali da sembrare di essere sulle montagne russe ma senza mai sentirsi male!

Una breve intro apre l'album lasciando subito spazio alla titletrak, violenta nei riff offerti e nella voce demoniaca di Fabrizio, la cui tecnica è indiscutibilmente eccellente. Le due tracce successive: "Deranged Sanity" e "The Last Defilement" confermano la ottima impressione dell'incipit dell'EP creando un vero e proprio muro sonoro, che dal vivo risulterà massacrante! "Buried By The Dark" e "Way To The Void" sono i pezzi che più si avvicinano ai primi Sepultura mentre la conclusiva "My Own War" è resa devastante da un drumming ottimamente strutturato e incalzante. Tecnica, esecuzione e artwork di tutto rispetto; un pizzico di personalità in più e sono pronti per il grande salto. In bocca al lupo.

Scendiamo in Sicilia, precisamente a Catania, per scoprire un altro gruppo strettamente legato al thrash, in questo caso quello più estremo partorito negli anni '80 da leggende quali Slayer, Bolt thrower e Sepultura.

Ascoltando questo "Evolve to extinguish" (successore di "Dissolution of eternity", 2003) non si può non pensare infatti alle atmosfere di quel grezzo capolavoro che fu "Beneath the remains". La band, nonostante un artwork alquanto ingenuo, si presenta molto bene, tramite sei tracce che alternano sulfurei ed articolati riff di tipica matrice thrash a devastanti sfuriate stile-Napalm Death (come in "Deranged sanity", pezzo meglio costruito dell'album). I Deathwork si districano molto bene tra tecnica e impatto (notevole la prova del bassista Riccardo), mentre non certo un vantaggio sono l'eccessiva omogeneità delle canzoni (che tra l'altro è un difetto congenito a questo genere) e le parti vocali più basse, rese, a mio giudizio, troppo roche e poco penetranti. "Way to the void" , "The last defilement" e "My own war" trasudano disperazione e pessimismo riguardo il futuro del nostro pianeta (difficile dargli torto) ma anche furia iconoclasta ed un più intimo senso di rivalsa, tanto da poter considerare questi ragazzi tra i migliori alfieri di una tradizione estrema che ha le radici ben piantate nel sottosuolo italiano, specialmente meridionale.

DEATHWORK wollen alles und damit im Moment noch ein wenig viel. Die italienische Band spielt eine Mischung aus räudigem Old School -Thrash und technischem Death Metal, die an sich gut reinläuft. Die Musiker sind spielerisch voll auf der Höhe, die schneidenden Riffs fräsen sich schön in den Schädel, und der brutale Grunzer kann auch ein paar Akzente setzen.

Das Songwriting selbst ist indes noch ausbaufähig. Die Songs sind voll gepackt mit zig Riffs, Ideen, Lead-Breaks und kranken Melodien, oftmals aber noch nicht perfekt arrangiert. Es fehlt einfach der Ohrwurmcharakter.

Dabei sind die Zutaten eigentlich alles andere als schlecht. Die Thrash-Roots dürften bei räudigen Bands wie alten KREATOR, SODOM, DESTRUCTION, SEPULTURA oder den DEATHWORK-Landsleuten NECRODEATH liegen. Vermischt wird das derbe Geballer mit Death Metal-Anteilen und technischem Riffing der SARCOFAGO-, MORBID ANGEL-, PESTILENCE-, DEATH- und SADIST-Kategorie. Somit kann man der Musik zum einen Vielfältigkeit attestieren und zum anderen der Band durchaus eine eigene Identität zu gestehen.

Der dünne Sound ist zumindest transparent und für eine Eigenproduktion durchaus annehmbar. Einige Breaks und Riffs können auch jetzt schon das Prädikat "Weltklasse" für sich beanspruchen, das muss nur noch über die gesamte Distanz der Stücke klappen. Nichtsdestotrotz ein interessantes Stück Musik, das sich seine Punktzahl auch ohne Exotenbonus absolut verdient hat, nicht zuletzt durch seinen rohen Charme.

Deathwork is an Italian five piece death thrash metal band, whose roots are based in Bay Area thrash metal. Deathwork have issued their independent six track mini album which is heavy on the thrash metal riffs courtesy of the guitar duo of Oreto and Balsamo and rounded out by the power house drumming of Alioto. Singer Fabrizio Malapote vocal is heavily influenced by death metal, no clean found within, but his vocals are similar to that of Max Cavalera of Soulfly and Sepultura fame. Deathwork bring back memories of the heyday of thrash metal, if you didn't know better you'd think you were listening to a band from that particular era. That's not to say that the band sounds dated by any means, but they do bring an old school feel to their music. Musically Deathwork are top-notch musicians, vocally Malaponte gets the job done, being that English is their second language, I'd like to see some more development in the translation or lyrical department. Having said that, it does not detract from the music and Evolve to Extinguish is still a solid effort, the sequencing is brilliant, the production is adequate and the catchy riffs will have you throwing the goat. The shining moments on Evolve to Extinguish are; "Buried by the Dark," and "Deranged Sanity" which I think should be included on their debut album when they get picked up by a label. 6 tracks of rip roaring old school thrash that put a smile to my face. The band reminded me of Sacred Reich or Atrophy in the playing and style of music. The 6 tunes are all honest to goodness thrash tunes with plenty of riffs and double bass and power and speed. The vocals are thrash style as well. The raw sound the band gets did remind me of those old 80's thrash bands. The riffs will have the head banging and the band mix up the speed at times as well. Fa sempre piacere imbattersi in realtà nostrane che, pur non rappresentando nulla di particolarmente innovativo e pur mettendo in luce ampi argini di miglioramento, riescono a distinguersi dalla massa grazie ad un impegno innegabile e ad una passione per il genere decisamente sopra le righe.
Questo è il caso dei catanesi Deahtwork, quintetto formatosi nel giugno del 2002 dedito ad un thrash metal Bay-Area-Style ma che, col tempo ha deciso di cambiar rotta, finendo quindi col proporre un thrash/death violento arricchito da qualche influenza grindcore (più che altro a livello vocale, si ascolti "Buried By the Dark" a proposito). I Deathwork si presentano come un combo affiatato e consapevole sia dei propri mezzi che dei propri limiti (segno quindi di grande maturità artistica e umiltà, cosa non da poco fra le nuove leve), combo che senza dubbio può fare molto di più se elimina qualche ingenuità a livello di songwriting ma che, per ora, ci ha consegnato un EP autoprodotto di tutto rispetto e che sa perfettamente come farsi apprezzare. "Evolve to Extinguish" è composto da sei canzoni di puro death/thrash, che affonda le sue radici da una parte nel vecchio metallo della morte di matrice americana (Morbid Angel), dall'altra mostra grande amore e dedizione nei confronti del vecchio thrash metal della Bay Area.
"Nulla di nuovo" direte voi lettori, e in parte avete anche ragione, ma attenti a non sottovalutare i nostri Deathwork, in quanto le sei canzoni che compongono l'EP qui recensito si attestano su livelli decisamente buoni e pur non sconvolgendo il nostro modo di intendere il death/thrash riescono a far breccia nei cuori degli amanti di tali sonorità. Il riffing è tecnico ed articolato al punto giusto e spesso mette da parte la tecnica per ottenere un impatto maggiore, il basso riesce spesso a ritagliarsi un ruolo da protagonista grazie a stacchi azzeccati e mai banali e il drumming fornisce l'impalcatura adatta perché il massacro musicale dei Deathwork possa iniziare. A completare il quadretto troviamo il growl vecchio stile di Fabrizio Malaponte, che non disdegna qualche indovinata incursione su timbri vicini al grindcore alla Napalm Death.
I brani non si fossilizzano solo su ritmiche veloci e/o lente: non mancano infatti numerosi cambi di tempo che permettono all'ascoltatore di non annoiarsi mai durante l'ascolto di "Evolve to Extinguish". Certo, la band dimostra in qualche passaggio più prevedibile e scolastico che ha ancora bisogno di crescere sul lato compositivo, ma lo ripeto, l'EP è veramente godibile e i pezzi fanno bene il loro lavoro.
Canzoni come la tirata "Deranged Sanity", dai blast-beat torrenziali e dal riffing tanto semplice quanto incisivo, l'ottima "Way to the Void" (ottimamente strutturata e dal lavoro di chitarra cesellato e che si stampa immediatamente in testa) o la più ragionata e corposa Title-Track ci consegnano una band che non va tanto per il sottile e sa come menare le mani quando è necessario e lasciarsi andare a passaggi più meditabondi per variare la propria proposta. Con brani come "The Last Defilement" o "My Own War" (belli i fraseggi melodici) ci si avvicina a territori più consoni al thrash metal vecchia scuola, ma di fatto il risultato non cambia, grazie ad un riffing piuttosto ispirato e a cambi di tempo messi al posto giusto ed al momento giusto.
L'EP è stato registrato in presa diretta (a causa del limitato budget a disposizione), ma la scelta quasi obbligata in realtà si è rivelata decisamente vincente, poiché l'equalizzazione ha permesso una volta tanto di non sacrificare il lavoro di basso e il tutto ha reso il sound più "vero" e dall'impatto quasi "live".
"Evolve to Extinguish" rappresenta certo un passo in avanti rispetto alla demo del 2003 "Dissolution of Eternity" e questo è senza dubbio un punto a favore della band che, nel momento in cui riuscirà a personalizzare maggiormente la sua proposta, probabilmente riuscirà a fare il salto di qualità definitivo.
Bravi ragazzi, continuate su questa strada e con il giusto impegno vi toglierete molte soddisfazioni.

A weird intro leads us directly into "Evolve to Extinguish" and here we can see that this band delivers some sort of cool combination of old school death metal and thrash metal, including a lot of eighties thrash metal riffs and technical parts. And they have also some more brutal parts. But the main thing here is to blast the listener with full aggression and crushing riffs. The drumming has intense double bass which is essential to achieve the main feeling here, and the vocals are really deathly but at the same time clear enough to allow you to follow the lyrics. There are some dark melodies here and there that give some sad feeling to some parts but the main thing here is the aggression. The sound of the recording is raw and powerful letting you feel all the violence unleashed and also the multiple arrangements that this guys have created here.

Es ist schon ganz interessant, was die junge italienische Band hier mit ihrem Zweitwerk anbietet. „Evolve to extinguish" setzt sich aus einer Mixtur von oldschooligem Thrash-Getrümmer und einigen Death-Metal-Einschüben zusammen. Es wäre zwar übertrieben, DEATHWORK gleich eine eigene Note zu bescheinigen. Aber immerhin klaut die fünfköpfige Prügelmannschaft nicht wild in der Historie herum. Einflüße von dieser oder jener Band sind natürlich zu hören, aber DEATHWORK setzen das Material recht gekonnt zusammen. Technischerseits haben's die Jungs auch drauf. Was noch fehlt, sind mit Sicherheit ein paar Attackenritte, die sich als sogenannte „Ohrwürmer" in die Hirnwindungen fressen. Also sagen wir mal, daß „Evolve to extinguish" ein solides Scheibchen ist, auf dem sich aufbauen läßt. Der Sound ist ganz okay und jenseits vom üblichen Demo-Brei. So kann man denn auch genüßlich dem forschen Schlagzeug mit viel Blastbeats und Doublebass folgen. Die Bassgitarre liefert einige hervorragend kranke Passagen. Die Sechssaiter wissen nicht nur, wie man die Masse zum Bangen bringt, sondern auch, wie verrückte Breaks, schnell wechselnde Rhythmen, aggressive Melodien und Soli kommen müssen. Der Gesang ist noch am weitesten im Death Metal verankert, kommt glücklicherweise ohne cleanes Gejammer aus und klingt schön räudig und ein bißchen heiser. Abwechslungs- und ideenreich sind DEATHWORK jedenfalls. Der eröffnende Titelsong des Sechstrackers lehnt sich an den Bay-Area-Sound an, verharrt teilweise im Midtempo und wird in den schnellen Abschnitten fast hektisch. „Deranged sanity" und „The last defilement" sind äußerst bang-kompatibel, letzterer aber etwas technischer ausgerichtet. „Buried by the dark" wirkt mit der gierigen Doublebass und dem reduzierten Tempo etwas stumpf. Dagegen kann „Way to the void" mit straffem Riff-Gewühle und starken, variablen Drums überzeugen. Der Rausschmeißer nennt sich „My own war", und er klingt genau so. Zwar hämmert auch hier wieder die Doublebass, aber sowohl die Gitarren als auch Bass und Gesang können Paroli bieten. Ein rasanter, oldschooliger Abschluß. Für Europäer kostet das Teil schlappe sieben Euronen mit allem Drum und Dran. Wer erstmal reinhören will - von „Deranged sanity" und „My own war" gibt's mp3's auf der Homepage.

A banda é italiana (Catania) e foi fundada no ano de 2002 através do encontro do vocalista Fabrizio Malaponte e do guitarrista Christian Balsamo. Em 2003 o Deathwork lança sua primeira demo, Dissolution to Eternity , que obteve uma boa repercussão na cena italiana. Em 2005 a banda lança este EP, Evolve to Extinguish , esbanjando um Thrash Metal com veia oitentista e influência de Death Metal.  O trabalho da dupla de guitarristas formada por Christian Balsamo e Luigi Oreto se sobressai. Basta ouvir Buried by the Dark (onde o baixista Riccardo Constantino tem uma bela performance) para ver o potencial desta banda italiana. Cazzo finalmente un sano cd di Death/Thrash come dio comanda che strizza l'occhio al passato, senza tanti fronzoli! Il cd racchiude 6 tracce di Death/Thrash fatto con tutti i crismi del genere, riff Thrasheggianti, voce death incazzata, parti veloci alternate a stacchi più cadenzati e suonano alla grande! La produzione è grezza e, detto sinceramente, non stona minimamente col prodotto, anzi secondo me è pure figa così! I Deathwork ci dimostrano che sanno suonare, gli assoli sono fatti bene e funzionali al genere, stesso discorso per gli arrangiamenti che sono fatti con cura e ci danno anche belli stacchi in pieno stile col genere. "Evolve to Extinguish" e "Deranged Sanity" sono 2 signore canzoni ma tutto il disco si presenta su buoni livelli e senza cadute di stile. Insomma, in mezzo alla puzza di merda tra band Melodic Death e Deathcore, panozzetti che giocano a fare i cattivelli armati di ciuffetto emo e braghe loffe, i Deathwork sono una boccata d'aria fresca! Per tutti i nostalgici di gruppi come Protector, Rigor Mortis, e in generale di quella scia di Death/Thrash SANO, grezzo, incazzato, old school questo disco è raccomandatissimo e piacevole all'ascolto! Questa band ha fatto un bel primo passo, speriamo continuino così! Io comunque sono molto fiducioso, spero a breve di sentire un full-lenght e scommetto che non tarderà ad arrivare! (se fosse in vinile sarebbe ORO).

Aaarggghhhh really great Italian oldschool death thrash metal to the bone!!!
Some killer double bassdrums and some great melodic heavy guitar riffs. The band also has a great vocalist who can both scream and grunt. The band just reminds you to bands such as early: DEATH, SEPULTURA, SODOM, MORBID ANGEL, ASPHYX, BENEDICTION, SACROFAGO and
BOLT THROWER! Deathwork is probably one of the very best extreme metal act I've heard in the last 5 years! Killer masterpiece for everyone who praises real death metal from the late 80’s/early 90’s! No Adidas death metal crap!
