Christian Renou, leading master of audio suspense is back under his familiar alias Brume.
Following something old & new on Elsie and Jack earlier this year, here is a full brand new solo work:
'After the battle', an amazing visual journey in sound that captures you from the first seconds right to the very end!
Whether all this was created analog/digital or mixed seems irrelevant, Brume keeps surprising
his audience in the best possible way, as if he has never been away....Viva Brume!

Goldprint on helldark blue relief cardboard featuring artwork by US artist Jonathan Canady
Including the official Brume/C.Renou discography, with big cheers to the Grandsons of Elsie and Jack

Vital Weekly number 707 (week 49)

More Brume can be found on 'After The Battle', released at the same time, but this time by Belgium's EE Tapes, who, like Waystyx specializes in some what 'older' musicians (Big City Orchestra, Y Create, Human Flesh to mention a few). EE tapes doesn't have the same great packaging, but have settled on their style: 7" covers. Both 'Emergence' and 'After The Battle' aren't mentioned on the insert, a Brume/C. Renou discography, which starts in 1985 and ends with release number 106 'The Sun/The Moon' (reviewed in Vital Weekly 698), and this is just the solo and split releases, not whatever he contributed to compilations. Is that a lot, or just an ok number? And is there is someone out there who has all of this I wondered (well maybe Brume himself of course). 'After The Battle' contains nine pieces, all in a pretty classic Brume strategy. There is sound, always and everywhere. Silence is never a friend of Brume, but throughout the twenty-four years of his career, there is one major change:
he allows synthesizers and computers on the game. In the old days he stuck all his acoustic sounds on a reel-to-reel machine and mixed them together, perhaps using some sound effects on the outside. These days, it seems at least to me, he uses sound synthesis from the computer to edit whatever he does, and also feeds them through (software based-) synthesizers. Still a highly vibrant sound, but also still, Brume doesn't always realize when to end a piece. Sometimes the pieces are a bit long by themselves, certainly when it comes to clang-boom pieces, but then the ten minute closing piece 'I'm Feeling Good' is a great one. Slow, peaceful, quiet, introspective. It offers an entirely new Brume, and this would be a great to have somewhere in the middle and a road to explore further. (FdW)

Super, at last again a real fabric-pressed CD by BCO, your most underrated
(anti)orchestra on this littl' planet!
Happy Birthday to you & here's a present for 30 years of (non)entertaining muzak!
Who's next to surprise these guys?
Featuring original members and introducing special guests such as Daevid
Allen (of Gong fame) and Jonathan Segel (Camper Van Beethoven).

BIG CITY ORCHESTRA is a long running, art/anti-art group based
generally in California-USA, with an ever rotating cast of musician
and non-musician members. Formed in 1979 as a house band for network
of artist residences in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Almost
comedically prolific, BCO sailed through the cassette culture movement
of the 1980's and 90's with about 130 hour-long releases on over 100
labels. The current formation of BCO is based in the SF/Oakland area
of Northern California.

Packaged in a 7" sleeve, each with a unique silkscreened & hand-numbered
insert by the members of BCO/Ubuibi!

Born as an obscure cassette on Fool's Paradise (London 1993), this exclusive and

essential work by Maeror Tri made a brief appearance earlier as a CD-r on EE Tapes

(Saint Nix 2001) before it quickly vanished into oblivion.

Due to popular demand it has finally been made available again as a limited CD-release!

Repolished in sound and housed in a new designed jacket, 'Yearning....' has now become of full value between such masterpieces as 'Myein' or 'Language of flames and sound'.

Don't miss it this time.......

The CD starts with a cover version of By This River, a mood-evoking 1977 Brian Eno song, and contains melodic tributes to other abstract artists like Marthe Wéry and Robert Rauschenberg.
Harold Budd, another great influence, is honored with a graceful waltz.
The music seems to fill the gap between ambient and song. Assembled in layers, electronic ones as well as piano, clarinet, sax, guitars, percussion, and samples from faraway places. All these elements are treated as equal.
Guests include: Stefan Thaens (Stefsax) on sax and clarinet. Also: some very sensual female vocals by Mieke Versyp, Nadine Bal (BeNe GeSSeRiT, Human Flesh...) and Drita Kotaji ( who was - back in the 80ies - the composer and singer of the haunting ballad “My Suitor” by Bernthøler and is now part of INK. ).
The project was set up in Gent, Belgium by Jan Van den Broeke. Some might remember him as a member of The Misz and Absent Music, a long time ago.
This CD puts him back on track, with new tools, old and new friends and a strong and personal new vision.
Matter Is Alive: 10 painted songs, 50 minutes of beauty and melancholy in the face of the end of the world….
