Happy June!
One of my passions is music and I think the thing I like best about MySpace is the amazing talent found here....I rarely listen to the mostly mediocre fare heard on radio today. My list of favorite artists is way too long, and includes many of you who are reading this, so I will just mention a few…Beatles, Elvis, Motown, Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Jeff Buckley, .....and James S Rutherford.  He has just released his second solo album and I want to take this opportunity to introduce him to you.

When I met Jimmy/James May '07 I did not know he was a musician. He is humble and unassuming, never boastful. I was going through a difficult time and he became my first true MS friend.  He always seemed to know when I needed a lift or a shoulder,  a fresh perspective or just the right book to help get me back on the path to my purpose and that elusive BLISS.

He learned I love music and told me he does as well and he casually mentioned he played guitar in a band.  I checked him out and was blown away by his talent.  I later read that his band, Open Window (which he co-founded), in it's first year was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Lyrical Content.  They accepted the award for the latter at the 2006 L.A. Music Awards where they performed on the main stage.

One day he told me he had been writing and composing and was going into the studio to record his debut solo album. Okay....the man is "movie star handsome" (he is an actor), a gifted guitarist, a successful businessman, a devoted dad, a published author, brilliant and witty and the most thoughtful of friends, yada, yada, yada.. The odds of him being able to carry a tune, write compelling lyrics AND compose were pretty slim so I smiled and wished him well thinking he better have some really EPIC guitar riffs.

I will never forget the day in August I first heard him sing the hauntingly beautiful WINTERS IN NEW YORK in a pure and sensual male voice that left me stunned and humbled and covered in goosebumps from head to toe. The following 7 tracks from FREEDOM were equally well done and his first creation seemed a very hard act to follow.  The riffs are there in all their awe inspiring glory but each component of each track holds it’s own, resulting in a nearly flawless balance.

FREEDOM is a romantic and inspiring journey of the heart; experiencing the joy of new romance and the pain of lost love, but always hopeful that tomorrow the sun will shine on a beautiful new day.  You can’t help but smile and feel somehow better, even enchanted. WIN SOME LOSE SOME is an inside out and upside down glimpse into the soul of a man who has faced his truths, found his purpose and is living life at full throttle and at peace in the NOW.  It is bigger, bolder and yes, even  better, than his debut. His obvious passion for music is manifested by the diversity and range displayed in this work of art. This one leaves you feeling shaken, not stirred and thirsty for more.

He is an authentic original, drawing heavily from his rock roots but borrowing from across the spectrum of genres, creating a sound uniquely his own.  The end result is hard to define and easy to become addicted to.  His guitar work would steal the show if the songs were not so well crafted and balanced and the voice not up to the challenge.  It always is.  Jimmy/James delivered spectacularly with his typical easy elegance and dedication to excellence.

Jimmy is a hard act to follow as a musician and as a friend.  He is allergic to self promotion and I love nothing more than sharing things I am passionate about with my friends.  Thank you for reading and please take a moment to listen and request an add.  I promise you will be happy you did.  You can never have too many friends and his music is adored by young and old, men and women....ENJOY!

Cheers!
PQ

This is a review of FREEDOM  written by my friend and muse, Pajama Queen.  I am flattered and moved and eternally grateful sweetheart

In an age of conspicuous consumption, celebrated mediocrity and bad attitudes, James S Rutherford is a breath of fresh air…the genuine article. While listening to his debut solo album FREEDOM, it became apparent he is comfortable in his own skin and confident of his many talents. He casts a spell with his easy grace; his subtlety is powerful and irresistible.

Having the soul of an artist, forever seeking answers to undefined questions, and feeling compelled to create a work that is uniquely him, James has put together a collection of eight tracks that showcase his incredible versatility without ever feeling the need to “show off.” With a discipline, poise and maturity only capable of someone who has worked hard to develop his craft, along with the amazing talents of the rest of the team, his debut effort is a brilliant accomplishment.

His sensual and pure vocals are in sync with the instruments, and his pitch and enunciation would make any vocal coach proud. From the hauntingly beautiful WINTERS IN NEW YORK and ONLY MAN to the fun and addictive LIKE AN ANGEL and HOLD YOU, he delivers on his desire to please his audience.

FREEDOM is a tribute to love, a complex subject that he handles with an ease and clarity that lifts us to a higher place and leaves us with a more hopeful vision of tomorrow. UNDER THE STARS will enchant and inspire dreams of finding new love, while the catchy beat of SHE'S GONE will have you moving on from a lost love, humming along the way. Last, but not least, his interpretation of the classical instrumental, ROMANCE, is simply stunning and leaves you wanting more.

In a work of art true to his timeless appeal and optimistic nature, he has gifted us with an album at once deep and transparent, catchy and elegant. A portrait of Jimmy/James.

Current mood:  busy
.. .... "The Cure For Procrastination The only cure for procrastination is action. Go beyond wishing, dreaming, considering, debating the options and get busy making it happen. Yes, it's going to be a little uncomfortable, it's going to involve effort, it's going to require commitment, and you're going to run into difficult challenges. So ask yourself -- do you intend to make it happen or would you rather put it off again and again so that it never gets done? What gets done is what gets done now. In a little while, in a couple of weeks, in a few years, when you get around to it -- these "someday" never do come. It's helpful to substitute the word "never" for someday, for that will force you to confront the issue. Give yourself the choice between doing it now or doing it never, and you'll be much more likely to do it now, if it's truly important to you. This moment right now is loaded with great value. You can choose to take action, and make that value your own, or you can choose to do nothing and forever leave this moment's bountiful treasure behind. Decide to accept the tremendous opportunity that is already available to you. Let go of the excuses, and make this the moment you jump into real, effective, purposeful action. Ralph Marston
