Idol-C is a bearded-boy lyricist claiming to bring something new to the music game. He's offering his latest album—which he has personally labored over and invested in for the past two years—to anyone and everyone, for free. An artist first, a poet next, and an emcee third, this 25 year old underground musician is crafting the music, building the energy, and offering some poetic catharsis to the Austin, TX music scene—and all for the considerable price of $0.
First and foremost, Idol-C is one of the two front men for the underground hip-hop crew Unspoken Levels. After five years with the group, making two albums, and almost splitting paths in 2006, he began a solo project, titled Endure. He co-produced all of the music with longtime friend and Unspoken Levels' beatsmith; DJ Stillness. The album, which is an intimate self-study on the transience of time and the enduring life within, is a unique mix of electronic soundscapes, building urban grooves, contemplative lyricism, and catchy hooks that sink the listener deep into Idol-C's calm world of self-reflection.
Following in the footsteps of Radiohead, Trent Reznor and Saul Williams, Idol-C has decided to give away Endure to anyone and everyone who asks for it—at no charge. However, he takes it one step past Radiohead's pay-what-you-think-it's-worth model, and he is offering the MP3s AND the physical CD completely free. No questions asked. For real.
After working for 2+ years on the writing, producing, mixing, artwork, and everything in between, he has decided that giving away music is the only way for an independent artist to really reach people. While the record industry is scrambling to figure out how to make people pay for music, while the war in Iraq is raging on, while countless issues of fear, pain and uncertainty are dominating the public realm, and while time marches on, Idol-C is here to say that the music is free and it's important that you hear it.
After thousands of people tore down the fence and piled into the fields of Woodstock in 1969 to experience the peace of music, promoter John Morris infamously stated, "It's a free concert from now on". Now, in 2008, it's the same story. Tear down the fence and enjoy the tunes.
