Trying to be enigmatic here I guess. Let me know what you think.
"You may go now. Come, let me loose your bonds. Yes, caress the scars: there, soothing, isn't it? Why, you're trembling ... Are you cold? Not afraid, surely? You're free now. Here, let me brush your raven hair from your eye, wipe the tear from your cheek. Your face is cold; take my cloak. I can see the question in your eyes: why now? Why now after so long? It is time, that's all, time for you to go.
There's the door; stand and walk toward it; I shan't stop you. There is no lock; it will freely let you pass. See, it opens willingly. Now pass through, I will not follow."
I turn to face the moon framed in the cold stone arch and watch you soar across Her face into the darkness ...

Current mood:in pain!
I'm writing to tell you about the pain I'm in and because I don't see why I should suffer in silence! It started with a bad back about 3 weeks ago that came on for no apparent reason. I suspected sciatica and thought it had gone but it has now moved to my left leg with a vengeance, so much so that when it comes on, I lose motor control of my leg, every step is excruciatingly painful and the sharp dagger pain is supported by a tingling, burning sensation down my whole leg. And of course, doing the job I do where I'm on my feet all day is a great help; It's ok when I'm sitting down but after a few minutes of standing up, it comes on again and I'm ready to rip my leg off and beat the nearest person to death with it! Yesterday, I drove to work and it took me a good 15m to walk the 300 or so yards from the car park to the shop. I was limping like an old man (which I certainly am not!!) I can see me having to have time off with it - I'm off today and Monday, supposed to be in on Tuesday and then off again on Wednesday so I'm going to go to the Docs tomorrow to see if I can get some nuclear strength painkillers (I'm taking the strongest I can get over the counter without a prescription and they aren't touching it) and call in sick Tuesday to give me a good 3 days to try and get it at least under control. So I welcome any sympathy that comes my way because I don't do pain well!

Current mood: sick
I've been feeling rather sorry for myself the last few days having had the most excruciating bad back since last Friday. It is sciatica which I suffer from from time to time. Usually, there is no reason for it coming on and this time is no exception: I woke up with it on Friday morning. But, being the brave soldier, I went to work anyway and soldiered on though Saturday - pretty busy - and Sunday when out part-timer called in sick ... with a bad back! So there were only two of us in the shop. But, as it happened, it was so quiet, my physical & mental stamina was hardly tested! I thought it was passing yesterday morning but it came on with a vengeance as I was walking into work and today too though as I have been off today anyway, I have been taking it easy and taking liberal doses of painkillers. Touch wood, it seems to be doing the trick; we'll see come the morning. But in the meantime, until it passes, I have to plan my actions very carefully: 5 minutes to get out of the chair, find some supporting wall or piece of furniture for when I do manage to stand up, walk step by step in a crouched, old man posture until I can straighten up, and as for visiting the lavatory, well, I'll leave that to your imagination ... You get the idea I hope as I hope I'll get your sympathy?

I've always said my musical tastes were eclectic to say the least and the last few days seem to have proven that beyond all doubt! I've recently been on a Jazz kick digging out Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis; his Bitches Brew is fantastic. Now today, I've been indulging in a Symphonic Goth Metal fest! This is a relatively new genre for me. I've always been something of a heavy metal fan [see my last post] but have been rather scared of some of the Black/Doom/Death Metal bands around: their harsh shouted vocals are too eerie and disturbing for me. But then I discovered what is rather cumbersomely called Symphonic Goth Metal. These are bands with a definite Goth look and sound and fronted by a female vocalist who sings in an operatic vocal style. Most of these bands hail from Northern Europe particularly Finland and Norway and the music is often based around fantasy/mythological elements which really strikes a chord with me - that subject matter isn't new by any means as Led Zeppelin always had a mythological theme in their music. Actually, I've known about this genre of music for some time from the bands that have hit the mainstream like Evanescence and Nightwish and it was the latter that really got me hooked onto this genre. So most of today I've been doing little else than listening to music by the likes of Sirenia, Midnattsol, Leaves' Eyes, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Silentium, Coronatus ... And there is a whole musical landscape of Symphonic Goth Metal still to discover! Not sure what it sounds like? Here's a taste: The Other Side by Sirenia, taken from their recent "Nine Destinies And A Downfall" album:

I was a huge fan of Deep Purple (the classic line-up) in my youth and still class their Made in Japan live album [1972] as one of the best live albums I've ever heard. Ian Gillan's vocals on Child in Time and Ritchie Blackmore superlative guitar playing (who is, in my opinion, one of the most talented guitarists alive today) still give me the chills!I knew Deep Purple have had reunions over the years but paid little attention. Recently I heard a song called Under a Violet Moon on the radio. It was an amazing sound; a mixture of folk played with mediaeval instruments and electric guitars! And the vocals! The female lead singer was incredible. On investigation, I discovered to my delight that the band, Blackmore's Night, was Ritchie Blackmore and his partner, Candice Night, hence the name. I cannot enthuse more highly about their sound, Candice's haunting vocals and Ritchie's consummate guitar, supported by a range of mediaeval instruments. They play a mixture of old and mediaeval music, their own compositions and covers like Joan Baez's Diamonds & Rust. They even cover classic Deep Purple. Just watch this video for their version of Purple's Child in Time to get a taste of Blackmore's Night's sound ....

The hours in retail, at least in the shopping centre where my store is located, are stupid! We are open 7 days a week with 9-9 opening on Thu and Fri and 9-7 every other day except Sun; 10.30-4.30! I wouldn't mind so much if the evenings, especially the late ones, were busy but, more often than not, we're twiddling our thumbs after 6 so it strikes me as wasted time. Problem is, the centre management call the shots and we have to be open the hours they dictate. And now they're planning to open until midnight every night in the week leading up to Christmas!!!Our Managing Director is not impressed (and neither am I or the rest of the staff), so much so that he's going to be attending the monthly retailers' meeting this week to tell centre management exactly what he thinks of this idea though I don't hold out much hope of us avoiding it! More on this later when I know more but in the meantime ... I told you a while back that I'd won £100 for a sales promotion. Well, there was another promotion running Jan to Mar as well. This was for selling Apple's extended warranty with new computers. We had to meet a minimum connect level and then the person who sold the most in each store would win an iPod Touch. Well, we exceeded our target and guess who sold the most extended warranties? Ok, I'm not one for crowing but suffice to say, I am now the owner of £269 worth of shiny, sexy, iPod Touch! Yay me!! The hours may be long but fillips like this are some compensation!

Texan tries to cash $360bn cheque
Texas cheque The 10 zeros proved to be a stumbling block! A man in the US state of Texas has been arrested for allegedly trying to cash a cheque for $360bn (£182bn). Charles Ray Fuller had said he wanted to start a record business, authorities in the state said. The 21-year-old's attempt to cash the money in a bank in Fort Worth failed when staff spotted the 10 zeros on the personal cheque. Mr Fuller was arrested on a charge of forgery and was released on bail of $3,750 (£1,900). The man from North Texas said he had been given the cheque by his girlfriend's mother. The bank said it had contacted the account owner and had been told she had not given Mr Fuller permission to either take or cash the cheque. Fort Worth police said Mr Fuller also faced charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and possessing cannabis. © BBC
