Elton John is no stranger to music for a greater good, and he and longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin have been paid tribute to countless times over the last 40 years of their amazing songwriting partnership.
But that doesn't make any combination of the two any less special, and the tribute slated for October figures to be a memorable evening in a very prestigious venue.
The event is simply called "The Music of Elton John and Bernie Taupin," and it's happening at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 10, as a benefit for Music For Youth, the UJA-Federation of New York's initiative that supports music-education programs for underprivileged young people.
The evening of music will feature 20 big-name artists, each performing one Elton John song.
So far, the list of headliners is eclectic and impressive. It includes Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Joss Stone, Page McConnell of Phish fame, Phoebe Snow, Jill Sobule, Lloyd Cole, Brendan Benson, Ryan Shaw, the Pernice Brothers, Raul Malo, Joshua Radin and Lizz Wright, among others to be announced.
"Elton and Bernie have such a large catalogue of hits, and the great number of musicians interested in performing this tribute is staggering," said producer Michael Dorf, who has been behind the controls for similar events honoring Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen.
"By show time, the lineup will include an amazing array of talent, from the very young to old, from an upcoming songwriter to a legend in their own right."
Tickets for the concert are on sale now at the Carnegie Hall box office (www.carnegiehall.com) and V.I.P. tickets, which include a pre-show reception, can be purchased for $350 to $1,000 through musicforyouth.org or by calling 212-836-1853.
