The Sly Stone Variety Show – Press Release – Feb. 11, 2009

Oh, the irony. A common question throughout the career of Sly Stone has been “will he show up?” Last night at Little Temple’s big Sly Stone Variety Show he did! But the Health Department showed up too. Too put it mildly, we all could have done without that surprise.

By now you probably know because you were there or heard through the grapevine that the show was shut down prematurely due to a random Health Department visit which uncovered a random hot water problem, to which random audience members later shouted “we don’t need no hot water!” While this was totally out of our hands, I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the greatness we had planned and apologize if your expectations were not met. I myself was overwhelmed by disappointment…we had so MUCH in store!

But today I am overcome by the love and creativity in this community. While I envisioned one thing for the show, it took on a magic of its own that is really settling in with me today:
George Clinton and Sly Stone, immediately jumped on stage when I told them of the problem. They performed as long as possible to the audience who was able to make it in…including an impromptu rap, a few snippets of “Stand,” “Higher,” and “We Want the Funk,” then greeted and took photos with those in line outside. And while I braced myself for an angry crowd, I’ve been receiving an immense outpouring of purely positive feedback. I’ve saved a few direct quotes for you:

“…that was an experience of a lifetime…” - Carey

“I have to admit that I was sad when the show got cut like that, but I realized that for how ever short or long the performance was, there was magic on stage. Two of music's most prolific writers and performers on the same stage... dopeness!” – Quincy

“george clinton / sly stone! rapping! classic!” – Anthony

And the other talent involved (BabyStone and Sly Stone band members, DJs Anthony Valadez, Jeremy Sole and A-Ski) have been amazingly gracious and optimistic about the next show. Even many of those in the audience are marking the next date in “sharpie.” Everyone is lined up and ready to keep the funk alive.
All in all, I don’t blame anyone for what happened. Even “the man” couldn’t prevent magic from happening. And, after all, the variety of The Sly Stone Variety Show is always unpredictable! But just KNOW that what you saw or heard about from last night was just a snippet of what’s to come.

Next on the docket: The Sly Stone Variety BIRTHDAY SHOW @ Zanzibar on Sunday, March 15th !! (1301 5th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401) It’s going to be like nothing else you’ve ever been to and they WILL NOT shut us down this time! Will you be there?

Please reach out to us so we can keep you updated about the next show and future shows after that:

Fresh off the first successful Sly Stone Variety Show at Zanzibar, THE Sly Stone himself is putting together a one-of-a-kind show at your favorite east side bungalow, Little Temple. Some said he wouldn't show at the last one; those who made it were happily surprised and then some. Sly made up a song ON stage with participation from the audience.

This event is certain to be another mix of the sought-after familiar and exciting surprises with Sly and the unpredictable tricks up his sleeve with more audience interaction, rare footage projections and more.

Featuring live performances by SLY STONE, BABYSTONE and special guests.
Plus DJs Anthony Valadez (KCRW / Dublab) and A-Ski (Unique 74).
