NK PRESENTS Hannes Hoelzl Joker Nies Alberto de Campo Mario de Vega
http://www.nkprojekt.de/

Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 8:00pm
WHITE RABBIT Potsdamer Straße 98 / 10785 Berlin
http://www.white-rabbit-be..rlin.com/

Hannes Hoelzl was born 1974 in Bolzano/I; he studied audio engineering in Graz/A and graduated as an MA in Sound&Music Technology at the Utrecht Arts Academy/NL. He works in various disciplines and constellations, always orbiting around the central focus of sound; with digital sound treatment and particulary the Open Source environment SuperCollider being his fundamental working tools.
His developments in music aim at improvisation interfaces that enable the computer to keep up with the directness of the instrumentalists; at sound spatialisation with a similar improvisational approach, and at pseudo-intelligent sound objects that might be able to surprise the performer with unforseen turns, often inspired by outworldly electronic circuits like the ones that his fellow musician Joker Nies employs.
Beyond acting as a performing musician, he works as a sound artist, designer, composer, software developer and instructor.
He has played internationally in Europe and China, and his installative works have been exhibited, amonst others, in the Venice Biennale (2001, 2006), in ZKM Karlsruhe (D, 2006), Hamada children's Museum, Japan, and in London's National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He has held lecures and workshops at Universities and Conservatories in Wesleyan/Connecticut, Duesseldorf, Prague, Oslo, Tokyo and Beijing.
Recently, he was involved in a project for the international Arts Biennial Manifesta in Italy (www.manifesta7.it), where an old austrian fortress with 77 armoured rooms was turned into a huge listening space.

Joker Nies lives and works in Cologne, Germany, as a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, fotographer and technical editor for the German Keyboards magazine.
Since the early 80´s, Nies experiments with all kinds of electronic sound-sources, like modular-analog synthesizers, individually designed electronic devices, DSP-based systems (like Kyma/Capybara) and software based sound-sources. During the early 90´s, modifying the Omnichord became his initiation to what is known as circuit-bending. Since that time a steadily growing number of devices has been converted from simple toys into alien sound devices.
For his live-performances the focus has completely moved away from computer hosted sound enviroments and shifted to analog electronics instead. His instruments, beneath the Omnichord, are carefully selected and modified electronics, and the outstanding instruments Rob Hordijk has built for him. Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the german Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays. Nies also leads workshops and tutorials about circuit-bending, DIY-instruments and synth-design in MAX/MSP.
His musical activities are centered around an improvisational aproach, like with the Trio Die Schrauber or The KØP. He also cooperates in composition-based projects like the activities of the multimedia project REALTIME-RESEARCH and QUANTUM QUASI dance-projects.
Joker Nies performed on festivals in all of Europe, USA and Mexico, with artists like John Butcher, Ernst Reijsinger, Birgit Uhler, Thomas Lehn, Alan Silva, Dave Tucker, Seth Josel, Hans Tammen, Mario De Vega, Gino Robair and many others.
CDs: Pair a Dice - Snake Eyes (1996), Near Vhana (1998) Electroshock - I woke up braindead (1999) Wollie Kaisers Timeghost - new traces for old faces (2000) Kölner Saxofon Maffia - 20 Jahre Saxuelle Befreiung (2001) The Yahoos - Yahoos (2001) U.R.L. - Konfabulation (2002) The Earthieves - Earthieves (2002)
Die Schrauber - Live in Mexico (2006)

Zbigniew Karkowski
Born in Krakow, Poland, in 1958, Zbigniew Karkowski is one of the most significant artists working in the field of experimental and contemporary music.

For the first time in Berlin, he will give a workshop for sound artists,
musicians or composers who are interested in his approach to composition and live performance on both the technical and formal level. This workshop gives the participants an opportunity to gain insight into the working methods of on one of the most challenging composers / performers of electronic music today.

Karkowski will teach the participants about his aesthetic and conceptual approaches towards composition through an in depth analysis of some of his own pieces as well as exploring the compositional concepts that are inherent to the design of his Max and Super Collider patches. Along these lines aesthetic approaches towards the use of sound textures, timbres and the technical aspects of sound production will also be covered and finally he
will share his experiences and ideological beliefs about live performance and composition.

Karkowski studied composition at the State College of Music in Gothenburg, Sweden, aesthetics of modern music at the University of Gothenburg’s Department of Musicology, and computer music at the Chalmers University of Technology. After the completion of his studies in Sweden, he has studied sonology for a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag, Netherlands. During

these years, he attended many summer composition master courses (Centre Acanthes in France) where he studied with Pierre Boulez, Iannis Xenakis, Olivier Messiaen, and Georges Aperghis.

He has produced numerous works in the fields of both acoustic and
electronic music and has written 3 pieces for large orchestra, an opera and several chamber music works. Karkowski was also a founding member of the electroacoustic music performance trio
“Sensorband” (with Atau Tanaka and Edwin van der Heide) and collaborated with artists like Francisco Lopez, Blixa Bargeld, Merzbow, Pita, Hafler trio,...

Based in Tokyo, Karkowski has a large collection of releases and regularly presents his work all over the world.

Alberto De Campo (AT) Berlin - Computer Improvisation
Alberto de Campo has studied classical composition, jazz guitar, and
electronic music in Austria and the US. After working at UC Santa
Barbara, designing experimental software instruments with Curtis
Roads, he taught at Media Arts Academy Cologne, the Institute for
Electronic Music in Graz, and at TU Berlin. He held a professorship
for Music Informatics at Music University Duesseldorf, and currently
is Professor for Generative Art at Arts Univ. Berlin.
He plays with powerbooks_unplugged (just in time programming on mostly
unamplified laptops); improvisation groups with acoustic instruments
such as Quiet Noise Quartet, Syntopia Ensemble, and ad hoc
constellations; electronic music with BlippooHazard (four musicians
playing the Blippoo Box, a hardware synth by Rob Hordijk).
Recent projects include creating software instruments and sound
installations with Florian Hecker, e.g. 'No Night No Day' at Biennale
Venice, and AuditoryObjects (Bordeaux), and collaborating with Marcus
Schmickler and Carsten Goertz on "Bonner Durchmusterung", a project
involving sonification und visualisation of atronomical data.

DJ Sniff (JP) from steim/Amsterdam - Experimental Turntablist
believes in the instrumental autonomy of the turntable and the
musicianship of the DJ. He is a turntable musician working in the
field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the
live reconstruction and narratization of the phonographically
amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. To
achieve this, he uses a unique setup consisting of hand-made hardware
interfaces and a custom Max/MSP software along with one turntable and
DJ mixer. He is also a concert/event curator for electronic music and
a researcher of music technology. Since 2005 he has been involved with
STEIM's (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, Amsterdam) R&D lab.
From 2007 on, he is STEIM's Artistic Director, curating public events
and representing the institution through performances and lectures.
dj sniff regularly performs with computer musician Yutaka Makino as
Audile and with saxophonist Keir Neuringer and Bassist Raed Yassin.

EVOL (ES) from Barcelona - Extreme Computer Music Cell
EVOL is a computer music cell started in Barcelona in 1996. Their work
has been released on internationally acclaimed record labels such as
Mego, Entr'acte, Lucky Kitchen, Diskono, Scarcelight, Antifrost,
fals.ch or their own ALKU.
In 2003 the group started a series of electroacoustic pieces entitled
'Punani' which addresses some of the main aspects of their work,
namely: algorithmic composition, noise, psychedelia, system
trajectories and the musical application of fractal geometry and other
mathematical phenomena, somewhere in between Denis Smalley's concept
of "spectromorphology", black magic and what Agostino Di Scipio called
"functional iteration synthesis". Recently they have released 'Punani
Xerrameca', a 10" on ALKU, and 'Fart Synthesis' a cassette on Presto!?

Kaffe Matthews (UK) from London - 8 Multichannel Performance
Kaffe Matthews was born in Essex, England, and lives and works in
London. Since 1996 she has been making new electro-acoustic music
through a system of self designed software matrices through which she
pulls and pushes different sounds live. The variety of sounds, things
and places she has worked with have ranged from self played violin and
theremin, sounds of spaces, kite strings on an uninhabited Scottish
Island, flight data from NASA scientists, Scottish and Irish pipers,
melting ice in Quebec, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, vibrating
wires in the West Australian outback and recently a Vietnamese
monochord and seaside sounds processed with 11 year olds to be
dispersed by visitor pedalled bicycles. She has just returned from a
month of working with sharks and conservation scientists on the
Galapagos Islands.

Suk-Jun Kim (KR) Berlin - Imaginary Electroacoustic Music
A Korean Composer whose main output is electroacoustic music, Suk-Jun
Kim’s music focuses mainly on the sense of places that are fantastic,
imaginary, magical, and realistic, where listeners can visit, stop by,
and dwell on. His music has received a number of international awards:
Métamorphoses (2000 & 2008), Regional Composition Prize at 2008 ICMC
in Belfast, CIMESP (2007), Bourges (2001), ASCAP/SEAMUS Student
Commission Competition (2001) as well as mentions and finalists in
MUSICA VIVA (2005) and MUSICA NOVA (2002 & 2005).
He now lives in Berlin as an Aritist-in-Residence composer at DAAD.
His research concentrates on listening and imagining in
electroacoustic music and a framework based on ‘acousmatic reasoning,’
a listening process using both spectromorphological and semiotic
listening modes, which listeners of electroacoustic music employ to
‘make sense’ out of the acousmatic experiences.

JUSTICE YELDHAM
What's been described as "a trumpet player trapped in a two dimensional universe" is in fact the unique audio work of Justice Yeldham, a maverick musician with an unhealthy obsession with sheets of broken glass. His now infamous show has astonished and bemused countless people, instilling them with a mesmerizing fear as he presses his face and lips against the glass' sharp edges whilst deftly employing various vocal techniques ranging from throat singing to raspberries. Turning discarded shards of glass into crude musical instruments, the results are a wide variety of cacophonous noises that are strangely controlled and oddly musical. A one of a kind act re-defining the expression "don't try this at home" this show quite simply needs to be witnessed to be fully appreciated, let alone understood.

Gerechtigkeits Liga was formed in Germany in 1981 to create an outlet for the neurotic obsessions of it's members. The group produced and released their first Tapes & Videos and the 12" Vinyl Maxie Single ‘'The games must go on'’, on their own record label by the name of Zyklus production. In 1986/87 they moved their centre of operation to London. G.L’s first album was released on Side Effects Records, which was then owned and operated by Graeme Revell of the Industrial group SPK. Throughout the 1980's the group was self sufficient in producing Music, Films and Videos. Multimedia performances took place all over Europe and North America. At at the beginning of the 1990's G.L became partly inactive and didn’t release any new audio material, but towards the beginning of the Millenium, founder member Till Brüggemann felt the need to restart the project again.
Since then, newly recorded tracks have been released on various European compilation projects. In 2005 two of G.L's early Vinyl releases aswell as some previously unreleased Audio material, was made available again in form of a CD digipack. Further Audio, aswell as Video material was released as a limited edition on Vinyl and DVD by the infamous label Vinyl-on-Demand in 2008.
Gerechtigkeits Liga, now based in London and Berlin, consists of Till Brüggemann and Ragnar, who work together with different collaborators, who lend their support and skills to the various activities of the group.

Knifeladder have been in existence in one form or another since 1998.
Their sound is the culmination of years of experimentation and independent development. The resultant sound is a heavily percussive industrial organic hybrid, a new meshing of electronic loops, live bass and percussion and ethnic instrumentation to form a kind of Organic Industrial Music.
Compared to such acts as Test Dept, Coil and Mother Destruction, Knifeladder have outgrown their reference points to create their own niche in the genre obsessed Industrial scene.

The personnel include Jonh Murphy, percussionist and electronic pioneer with such acts as SPK, early Current 93 and credible pop act The Associates. Hunter Barr was a founder member of the infamous Infant Skull Surgery and is a renowned recording engineer for his unconventional yet obsessively perfectionist approach. Andrew Trail was founder of Autogeddon and performed in the controversial Ministry of Love, who broke up after
being banned from performing in every live venue in Sydney. He currently also plays live keyboards with Inertia. Knifeladder themselves have performed with such acts as Allerseen, Sieben, Naevus, Coil, Bad Sector and Neither/neither world. With over 100 live actions, they have mastered the live environment like few others.

Anenzephalia was one of the first artists to be signed by Tesco Organisation. B. Moloch is the man behind the project, often helped by Genocide Organ's frontman Wilhelm Herich, therefore Anenzephalia are sometimes refered to as a side-project of Genocide Organ, even if actually they are not. Their music is a powerful well-structured industrial power-electronics with menacing brutal vocals. On stage Anenzephalia are threatening and disturbing, assaulting the audience with wall of noises and blinding strobe lights.

"These are dreams, dreamed by dreamers, who are awake" TROUM is a duo located in Bremen, Germany, established in early 1997. The two members "GlitcH" and "Baraka[H]" were active before in the influental ambient industrial group MAËROR TRI (which existed from 1988 to 1996). TROUM is the old german word for "DREAM". The dream seen as a central manifestation of the unconscious symbolizes the aim of TROUM to lead the listener into a hypnotizing dream-state of mind, a pre-verbal and primal consciousness sphere. TROUM uses music as the direct path to the Unconscious, pointing to the archaic "essence" of the humans inner psyche. TROUM tries to create music that works like a direct transformation of unconscious matter. TROUM's creations are influenced by post-industrial, minimal and drone-music. Both members use guitar, bass, voice, accordion, balalaika, flute, mouth-organ, melodica, gong, field recordings, pre-recorded-tapes and a diversity of sound-objects to build a kind of multi-layered and highly atmospheric dreaming-muzak. Their sound could be described as "dark atmospheric ambient industrial", "transcendental noise" or just "Tiefenmusik". TROUM doesn't work with synths, samplers or computer-soundsources, the sounds are created "by hand" to reach a broader sensibility. TROUM uses a spiral as their logo, expressing the trance-inducing potential of the music and the wish to reach inner, deeper spheres of the mind with it. Music as a door to unknown & alien dimensions. Music as an expression of the mystery of existence itself.

The dead sons of the sun are roaming the Earth, choosing the musical weapon to convince the human so-called intelligence to fight if they can’t love each other. After conquiring Mars and Pluton, they choosed the East Coast of the Usa to land and start their crusade. Their Head Quarters is now established in Brussel. They will emblind the audience with raw rays of unseen light, and preach thrue distorted music clichés. The absurdity of human being needs to be shown by pointing its most obvious form : religion, drugs, love etc… After been reprogrammed, human will be able to save their planet. Solar Skeletons is a duet consisting of Tzii and Ripit. They recorded several anthems ranging from psychedelic dub to heavy booty bass, from dark acid techno to distorted electro punk, from decadent blues, to drilling black metal, from power electronic to sinking drone. Their live shows consist of an entire world of ivideos, costumes and sounds. They also recorded numerous collaboration work with diverse musicians from around the globe as Error (Latvia), Cochlea (Japan), Koonda Holaa (Cz/usa), 1997EV (Italy), HHY (Portugal), Le Dernier Cri (France), Bombyx (Belgium) and released on numerous labels like Radon Uropa, Night On Earth, Le Dernier Cri, Aïnu, Amertume, Produck, BTK, Bruits de Fond, Marasm and more!!!

Luna Dopa is one of the several metamorphosis of Gabriel Luis B. also founder of Neue Kultur. Constantly thinking a union of arts & ritualism through the energies of the new aeon. Unconscious drones, black soundscapes, repetitive mysterious spoken-words, everything close with out-of-body experiences is a potential adjective for his own work. The present of music has a connection with ambient music, which is a gate to hidden energies of the universe and the unconscious mysterious stuff of being. The next step of ambient music will be MAGICK AMBIENT, a gate to extra-sensorial world, a connection with different states of mind, primary will power, astral metamorphosis. Music of the next future won't be made by musicians but from magicians, celestial intelligencers.

Bex is the solo project of Frenchman Benjamin Bex, who uses guitar, loops and voice to generate the kind of heavily synthetized cartoon environments that would balance laminal constructs of overlapping melodies, rythms and drones with hissy vocal mantras. Appearing on stage with his double-neck guitar,2 meters long FX pedal racks and 70's clothe and hair dressing style to deliver a unique -yet sentimental- wave of drony doomy psychedelic black metal.

After 11 years in the bleak realm of magick electronics. Moonchild Erik(ex-HIS DIVINE GRACE) moves to the desolate woods of ambient post-black-metal. The new project is called DE GRÂCE, featuring LaMort (aka Laszlo P.S. de WERMUT, ICH WOLLTE ICH KÖNNTE, NOTRE DESSEIN) on guitars and vocals. The first LP, a split between the old project HIS DIVINE GRACE and the new one DE GRÂCE, is planned to be released in time for the KALYUG Festival on LaMort's post-black-metal label JUST ANOTHER WINTER joining forces with REUE UM REUE to celebrate the transition between the dying and the newly-born.

LISERGIC AND CALEIDOSCOPICAL SONIC CYBER TRIPS IN OUTER AND INNER SPACE ... A TIME-BETWEEN CHRONOLOGY THROUGH THE ABSENCE-DISTANCE OF THE PRIMORDIAL HYEROGLIPH MOTHERDRONE UP TO THE NOISE_MIRRORING MORPHOLOGY OF THE WETSUN ...
Beyond the venefic nuclear miasmas of "dead.ends.sinful", bound to the outer steps of the trans-futurist suite-song are the links to a physiological post psychedelic junction into way far glacial and poliphormic abysses, between ebephrenical stasis , asphyctic compressions, subliminal disturbs, astral irradiations... falling in the wait of a self dyacronic-exponential reiteration. Days of absences, of essences in the methaphisical precarious equilibrium between auroral and aseptic emotional states left in permanent hybridization. Days of post-organic lullabyes for androids, technocratical mantras, globular nenias and neural labyrinths. Days of abrasive disharmonies and scismic melodies, eonic distances painting cosmic vaults in the indeterminable fields of enthropy or the atomic inflation... ::: Egon Key for 1997EV anno 2253 previous the age of Capricorn ::: 1997EV, "dead.ends.sinful" A visionary ritualist and psychedelic post-atomic voyage among the ruins of technology, an exploration journey-report in the frost of existential sand . Subliminal melodies and thorny distortions, spread over hammering cadenzas and iridescent drones, wave hypnotical within the out-of-time hedigipack CDart-rending and lashed outer limits of the desert . Futurist premonitions and turmoils of abstract noises, instrumental trances guided by galley rythms over a claustrophobic non-oxygen soundscape filtered by surrealist lyrics thrown-wards about a cathatonic void . Fresco-mosaic of a degenerated waste land...haze more than landscape.

Since more than ten years Tzii, music composer and videast, spreads his magickal corrosive frequencies all over the world through touring from eastern and western europe to Australia, passing by USA, Canada, Japan and Africa, where he played hundreds of shows..… Spreading cinematic dark ambient and raw power electronic anger, His aim is to enclose you into a abusive spiral leading you to an impossible redemption. He created his own label NIGHT ON EARTH in 2001, releasing vinyls. Collaboration is his priority and played on stage or in studio with these musicians: Ripit, Gamaboy, Steve MacKay (The Stooges), Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), Marshall Allen (Sun-Ra Arkestra), Sikhara, Rko, Hop-Frog, Jason Lafarge, Temple Of Bonmatin, Sam Lohman, Alveols, Nevroz, D’incise, Klstr, Najah, Koonda Holaa, Stalker, Otto von Schirasch, DJ Urine, Error, Felakkkzion, Cochlea, Pilami, Synoxys, 1997EV, Company Fuck…..and more !

In spite of all their growing differences, there are still hidden places, elusive dimensions where East and West meet… For instance in the highly introspective music of the Marseille/Berlin based solo project NIEDOWIERZANIE, presenting here its first official album in the shape of five long instrumental pieces of neo-classical sound sculptures. Flirting both with IDM and contemporary music, mixing organic compositions (using a wide range of string, wind and self-made instruments) with electronic cut-ups and field recordings from the artist’s native Marseille and his extensive journeys through India, these intense, complex and luminous crescendos evoke the works of artists as diverse as COIL, MIRROR, MIASTO NIE SPALO and ARVO PÄRT.

Column One

Column One was founded in Berlin, 1992 by Robert Schalinski, Rene Lamp & Eike Bölling as the ideological basis for an (aesthetic) approach to structures, philosophical ideas & media of the (now) western world. Rene Lamp & Robert Schalinski already had been working together on short-film projects. Eike Bölling was a member of Column One during a short period of time only & since then has been releasing minimal-heavy-electronic-m..usic as NETZACH. Later… Jürgen Eckloff, Andrew Loadman & Tom Platt joined the project. The philosophical ideas of Radical Constructivism, the paths of the Cut-Up demonstrators & Dada Fascists have had greater influence on the foundation and the work of Column One.

The crucial point & the main motivation for the work of Column One is the Totalisation Of Communication. Meaning: to bring back into consciousness communication in its unavoidable consequence & presence. ...thus, it's about decoding information, the utilisation, cutting up & decoding of that which is presented to us as Reality & of what we constantly present to ourselves. In order to succeed in this decoding process Column One utilises the existing forms of communication & its media & generally considers everything as raw material, basic element or finished product.

Column One operates as collective. Besides the founding members a changing amount of various members circulates from project to project: Andrew Loadman, Tom Platt, Jerôme Soudan (also: Mimetic), Wojcek Czern (also::Zia Siodma Gora), Jürgen Eckloff, Stea Andreasson(MOWE) Leo Solter (also: Kein Zweiter, Tornow), Urk Giten etc..

Column One is part of Methods To Survive Net.

Collaborations with: Artefakt Mag., Die Sibirische Zelle Jürgen Ploog, Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle), Tochnit Aleph (No is E etc.), Never Mind The World, Rex Joswig (H.I.P.), Paul Kendall (Mute), Quasister, Pawel Koslowski (Miasto Nie Spalo), Marc Weiser (Rechenzentrum), Justine Electra, Silksaw etc.

Theoretical and Aesthetic approaches to composition - a 2day Workshop with Zbigniew Karkowski

Born in Krakow, Poland, in 1958, Zbigniew Karkowski is one of the most
significant artists working in the field of experimental and contemporary
music.

For the first time in Berlin, he will give a workshop for sound artists,
musicians or composers who are interested in his approach to composition and
live performance on both the technical and formal level. This workshop
gives the participants an opportunity to gain insight into the working
methods of on one of the most challenging composers / performers of
electronic music today.

Karkowski will teach the participants about his aesthetic and conceptual
approaches towards composition through an in depth analysis of some of his
own pieces as well as exploring the compositional concepts that are inherent
to the design of his Max and Super Collider patches. Along these lines
aesthetic approaches towards the use of sound textures, timbres and the
technical aspects of sound production will also be covered and finally he
will share his experiences and ideological beliefs about live performance
and composition.

Karkowski studied composition at the State College of Music in Gothenburg,
Sweden, aesthetics of modern music at the University of Gothenburg’s
Department of Musicology, and computer music at the Chalmers University of
Technology. After the completion of his studies in Sweden, he has studied
sonology for a year at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Den Haag,
Netherlands. During

these years, he attended many summer composition master courses (Centre
Acanthes in France) where he studied with Pierre Boulez, Iannis Xenakis,
Olivier Messiaen, and Georges Aperghis.

He has produced numerous works in the fields of both acoustic and
electronic music and has written 3 pieces for large orchestra, an opera and
several chamber music works. Karkowski was also a founding member of the
electroacoustic music performance trio

“Sensorband” (with Atau Tanaka and Edwin van der Heide) and collaborated
with artists like Francisco Lopez, Blixa Bargeld, Merzbow, Pita, Hafler
trio,...

Based in Tokyo, Karkowski has a large collection of releases and regularly
presents his work all over the world.
