Tu Fawning has a new stride. Sporadic though we once were, we are no longer. Joined bands, long holidays, long tours with other bands and jobs be damned. As a two piece we came out of the gates with absolutely nothing but a passion for writing the types of songs we felt compelled to write, and now as a four piece we have conquered logistical snafus and cleared the fog from the path we have chosen and once again found the passion that guided us in the first place.
Yes, we have been four and not two for a while, but it never completely gelled. The parts were there and the camaraderie was there, but still we lacked a dimension....time. Like cooking, creative endeavors often require a little time to stew and coalesce. Upon starting the band, we weren't expecting to be so well received have so many offers to play shows so quickly, forcing us to neglect that essential element of being musicians verses simply performers. Now, though, it seems we've clocked enough hours in the basement sifting through ideas, discovering strengths and weaknesses coming together as an actual band.
Like most bands who reach this touchstone of achievement, we have celebrated by recording our first record. With approximately 10-12 newly minted songs It should be released early in the new year. Though the label is still in the land of discussions we find ourselves ready and willing to begin playing shows again, and for that we are excited and grateful.
To Christen our return to the stage we will be performing at the Doug Fir on Thursday August 27th, with Ages and Inside Voices. We will be debuting a lot of new songs...of course. Then to follow, we will be performing with Dirty Three during MFNW at Berbatis on Sept. 17th. To say that we are honored and excited to play with them would be an understatement. Following that we will be having a show on Sept. 19th at the Portland Art Museum (All Ages) with friends Deeelay Ceeelay. Another show we are quite excited about. And if that were not enough, we will be playing a show at The Woods, as well as an art opening in November.

It's coming. Its slow and a little ephemeral, but its coming. Repp and I have cemented a couple more new songs and Mr. perrault and I have done what we believe to be known as "workshopping". If we were professional musicians we'd probably use these terms with pure confidense. You know...like gigging.
Any way, We are adding to our meager home arsenal of materials that will render us capable of our soon-to-be home recording-album effort. In the meantime, I daydream and salavate over who we will get to help us mix it.
The biggest report we have to post is that Ms. Repp has become amazing on drums and I have finally gotten inspired to start working in the realm of samples again.
...and thus we go.
A show in Portland is on the horizon. Think mid May.

We played 3 shows last week, which is about as much as we normally play in 3 months. All shows were quite different and quite fun. The M. Ward was the best for us, though, because we got to be on our own equipment. It makes such a difference! So, Miss Repp has left for Viva Voce tour and Miss Rietz leaves on a 4 week holiday in 2 days. crazy. Somehow, though, I think we were able to bring the band to a tighter and more cohesive level in the last few months. It is sure to make recording more fruitful and enjoyable. As of now, the plan is complete the tracking within the confines of our house, relying on the ability of some of us to come and go and commit ideas to spinning discs mounted inside a plastic box when we have the time. Then we will take said songs recorded at our abode and combine them with the sessions we did at Type Foundry and that...that will be the first Tu Fawning album. For now, 2 tracks from our SECESSION ep will be making a reappearance: "I'm Gone" and "DIamond In the Forest". Time to sleep

Currently we have 4 songs for our new record, which has no name and no label as of yet. THis week we begin writing again, which is quite exicting for us busy-but-music-loving folks. The first order will be to resurrect a song from the cutting room floor and to finally hammer out a few half-written songs that we have had for a while. THen I think we will simply try "jamming" and recording some loose ideas. I think I will make a goal to describe the songs on here as they come, but we'll wait for the pudding to be made before we describe it's taste. I will say that it is nice to get back to the idea of getting lost in the world we are creating with the songs instead of boxing up the "sound" that we have made already. It's always difficult for musicians to classify their sound, but for a band that played a fair amount of shows and gained two members, recorded an ep, oh and also have busy jobs, within it's first year...that is strange. Now, though, now it's back to the fun mysterious part. So, thank you to those of you coming along with us while we change a grow a little.

Ok, so here we are...up in AMore Phonics with minimal lights and some candles and some vocals about to be spilled all over the place. We are one song away from being finished and it feels great. It sounds great, and that's why it feels great. I think we're all beginning to see this coming together. Some songs have remained true to a pared-down 2-piece approach and other songs have grown larger than I ever possibly imagined. It's really help me, personally, fathom a perspective as to how are first full length will come together. With each passing day Kevin has grown more understanding of Corrina's and my cryptic vision of what we want this to sound like. Seeing that it's our first proper release I really want it to help to define what the hell it is we do. DId I mention that before? Maybe. But, hell, it means a lot to us. ...holy shit...Corrina just sang on "I'm gone" and it was unreal. I can't say I've ever been part of a session before with someone with a great voice became a great singer. So much passion. And to know it's the real deal is one of the most gratifying feelins I could ask for as her bandmate. Wow. Good stuff. Ok, I'll quit talking about some crap you haven't heard yet. Needless to say, we're all very excited.Oh, and Larry, the dog, is my new best friend. joe H.

It is a wierd post-christmas/pre-new year day in postland, Oregon and we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of our first proper recording. Day one saw us getting slightly less than we wanted to and day two dragged even more. Personally, I'm very accustomed to 31knots having to get everything done in small windows of time out of sheer neccessity. What a novel idea it is to have all the band members living in one city. Alas, jobs and schedules are things that are almost as daunting as geography. All minor road blocks aside, the recording is sounding great. It is much fuller than I imagined it would be. And working with Kevin has been wonderful. As toussaint put it, he is the delicate balance of laid back and assertive. That is a difficult thing to find in an engineer sometimes, so we're appreciative. As of now, Liza is wrapping up her violin parts on "Sound You warn" and then after that only a couple more guitar parts until we reach the land of vocals! Then after that we will reach the motherland that is mixing. I love mixing. Time consuming, yes, but very rewarding and challenging. Maybe this time around I can have that Elvin choir come to fruition. I hope Kevin wasn't picturing dwarves. -joe

So, Corrina and I are finally embarking on a proper recording. It will be released as a vinyl-only ep, via Discourage Records, out of Portland Oregon. Initially it was going to be the beginning and end of us as a two-piece, but now it looks like it will only have a couple songs with just the two of us. Our two new members, Toussaint Perrault and Liza Reitz are simply too good not bring into the fold asap. As I write this Corrina is doing a drum take to "I'm gone". Her tempo is much better than mine. Oh well. Kevin, from Viva Voce, is manning the board and the good vibes are readily available, even to my 4-hour-sleep briain! His studio, Amore' phonics, same as his and Anita's imprint, is the most impressive home studio my eyes have witnessed. Tomorrow will be the day that we bring Toussaint into the fold and get some horns all over the place. Then Liza will be the maven of violin and piano on Sunday. If all goes well the end of the week will find us with a new ep, our first release, on the verge of being thrown into the masicating vulnerability that is the public arena. joe H
