GRAPEVINE @ BEDFORDS : Starting 2010 as we mean to go on !

Well, the poster speaks for itself really.  The last time Marcus Bonfanti, Jinder , and Lotte Mullan came up together we were treated to one of the most blissful nights of live music we have ever had ( and we've had some crackers, I'm sure you'll agree ! ) Their musical friendship resulted in some wonderful duets and collaborations, and the night was full of heartfelt songs, killer musicianship and a dazzling blend of blues, soul and Americana.

SO ....add the amazing Paul Liddell ( who always gives a show-stopping performance whenever he plays ) and his uncanny ability to turn himself into a one-man acoustic rock machine  and local hero Mark Miller ( a long-time lynchpin of the local acoustic scene ) who will be bringing a bunch of new songs and a band this time  and you have the recipe for a wonderful night of music.

As usual, we'll be kicking off around 8pm , and we're expecting a good turnout for this one, so please come early. You may even like to enjoy a bite to eat before the show, in which case please ring 01603-666869 to book a table. ( We already have some bookings , so ring early to avoid disappointment )

I hope to see as many of you as possible there. January can be a bit of a dull month, but we are determined to show it really doesn't have to be that way !

All the very best, and see you soon !

Steve xx

WEDNESDAY 9th DECEMBER: GRAPEVINE FESTIVE SPECIAL.

I know that we like to think that all Grapevine nights are pretty special, but with the Festive Season just around the corner, we have pulled out all the stops for our last Grapevine of 2009.

We are delighted to offer the following Festive Menu at only £5 per head !

DECLAN BENNETT

ED SHEERAN

GIRL IN A THUNDERBOLT

DUMBFOUNDUS

Declan Bennett
is just back from the USA, where he has been starring in a stage adaptation of Green Day's American Idiot, and will be resuming his singer-songwriter mantle. Those of you who caught his brilliant set at Grapevine back in April will know this is going to be unmissable. Those who didn't...prepare to be dazzled !

Ed Sheeran was the winner of last year's Next Big Thing and has consolidated his position by undertaking a punishing touring schedule that recently found him supporting ( and by some accounts upstaging ) Just Jack on a nationwide tour. Again a very welcome return for this hugely talented young musician.

Girl In A Thunderbolt is impossible to pigeonhole ( so we won't even try! )  and hugely enjoyable. She creates a slighly spooky atmosphere, reinforced by an unusual arsenal of musical instruments and oodles of stage presence. We are very excited to welcome her back.

Dumbfoundus Yes ! We have finally coaxed the shy, retiring Noel out from behind the Bedfords bar to reveal his secret identity ! Together with co-conspirator Geordie, he has been whispering of uplifting self-penned songs interspersed with some surprising ( and challenging for a duo ! ) covers. Who knows what will happen ? Guaranteed fun !

Please come down if you possibly can and help us to end our musical year in style. We already have some great artists lined up for 2010...but more of that later !

Hope to see you on 9th December !

Photobucket

Firstly, a huge thank you to all those who came to our recent gig. So great to see such a crowd enjoying such brilliant music from Lewis Garland & The Kett Rebellion, Brooke Sharkey and Adriana. I hope to see you again because we have some more very exciting musical treats coming up , starting with this :

WEDNESDAY 11th NOVEMBER 2009

MARINA FLORANCE BAND

SYLVIE LEWIS

JENNY DIDN'T LIKE TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED

Our November Grapevine will feature sets from Marina Florance Band and Sylvie Lewis , and Jenny Didn't Like to be Photographed.

Marina and her band will be known to many of you, but it has been a while since this great band played on their home turf, so grab this opportunity to catch their mellow sound, great songwriting and musicianship in the lovely setting of Bedfords.

We are also very excited to have Sylvie Lewis joining us, not least because, though British, she is normally based in Italy ! Sylvie..s voice has been described as sounding like honey, her songs are witty, poignant and timeless ( with more than a nod towards greats like Cole Porter and Bacharach ) and delivered with masses of charm. This is an all-too-rare UK appearance, and not to be missed !

We can now also confirm the " mystery artist formerly known as TBC " is , in fact, the very fine Jenny Didn..t Like To Be Photographed. So, add some atmospheric alt.country to the rather promising musical mix.

As usual, entry on the door will be £5. Or you can pre-book a table and join us early for a bite to eat by ringing Bedfords on 01603-666869

Hope to see you there !

Firstly, a quick thanks to all of you who came down last week and caught the excellent sets from Thomas J Speight, Jessica Staveley-Taylor and Emily Creed. Once again, there were whispers of it being one of the best ever nights ...it was certainly a real treat !

So, on to the next one !

WEDNESDAY 14th OCTOBER 2009 at BEDFORDS :

LEWIS GARLAND & THE KETT REBELLION

ADRIANA

BROOKE SHARKEY

A welcome return for Lewis Garland & The Kett Rebellion, a very contemporary young folk band who play their excellent songs with wit and attitude. Plus ! The lovely Brooke Sharkey (and her amazing voice and songs ) returns fresh from her travels in Europe, and excellent Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Adriana ventures South after a series of acclaimed gigs at the Edinburgh fringe. Lovely music in a beautiful venue...a whole evening of it too ! And just a fiver on the door. Please join us if you can. Steve xx

WEDNESDAY 30th September : THOMAS J SPEIGHT & JESSICA STAVELEY-TAYLOR and EMILY CREED

We are very excited to tell you that we have added another Grapevine night at the end of the month to coincide with a tour by the excellent London-based singer-songwriter Thomas J Speight to mark the release of his " This House " EP.

Thomas is a graduate of the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts, and received the famous  Macca thumbs-up from Sir Paul McCartney ( LIPA patron )  who told him : " Don..t change a thing ! "  His music is heart-on-sleeve and rootsy, with a strong hint of Americana flavoured with an English songwriting sensibility. We hate to categorise and compare, but are confident that fans of the likes of Ryan Adams will be right at home with Thomas..s music.

Also joining Thomas in his band is the lovely Jessica Staveley-Taylor ( another LIPA student )  Jess has a wonderful voice and some great songs in her own right ( she played Glastonbury this Summer with her sisters as The Staves ) and we are delighted that she has kindly agreed to play a set of her own as well as with Thomas.

There will be another support act, still to be confirmed.

This promises to be a very fine night of music and we very much hope that you will be able to come down and enjoy these artists in an intimate setting whilst you can, as they seem destined for bigger things.

Entry, as usual, is £5 on the door and music will start around 8pm. Food is available and tables can be reserved by ringing 01603-666869.

You can check out the artists here : www.myspace.com/speightboy  and  www.myspace.com/jesstaylormusic

Hope to see you there,

Steve @ Grapevine xx

AN UPDATE : EMILY CREED JOINS THE LINEUP

We are very pleased to confirm that the excellent Emily Creed will be joining the lineup for this gig. Grapevine regulars will already be familiar with this very talented young singer/songwriter . Check her our heer:

Yes !

Later this month we can thumb our noses at the all the doubters then shake hands with all our supporters ( having washed our hands from the nose-thumbing first, of course ) as we celebrate our 2nd blissful year of Grapevine music nights at Bedfords.

As I am currently up in the Lake District and bashing this out on a tiny netbook, I am unable to update posters etc, but here is all you need to know :

Wednesday 16th September 2009 at 8.00pm

Guests : Clara Kousah, Dove and Boweevil and John Ward & Mario Price.

Once again, it will be a great night with a broad range of musical styles, from the dazzling acoustic based rock and balladry of the lovely Clara Kousah and her band,  blues from the excellent Dove and Boweevil ( recently returned from the USA ) and the wonderful musicianship of John Ward and Mario Price who mingle contemporary folk with rousing traditional tunes that last time threatened to blow the roof off. So guitars will be strummed, violins bowed ( frantically ) and all manner of things will be hit.In short, everything a party should be !

Please join us if you can.

PLUS !! Wednesday 30th September a Grapevine Extra !

We are squeezing in an extra night to tie in with as tour by the excellent Thomas J Speight. This will be on Wednesday 30th September. More details to follow, but what I can tell you now is that Thomas is a graduate of the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts ( like Alyssa Bonagura who was with us a month or two back ) and will be accompanied by several of the band who so ably accompanied Alyssa, plus the wonderful Jessica Stavely Taylor ,another LIPA student ( who we are hoping will also play a solo set for us in her own right )

This looks set to be another great evening, so please pencil it in your diaries now.

More info to follow, when I get back home !

All the best til then,

Steve xx

Current mood:  adventurous
Yes !

Very pleased to confirm the brilliant  Ed Sheeran as a last-minute addition to the lineup for next week. Last time he was with us, this young Next Big Thing winner played a superb set and we are really pleased that he will be joining us again.

So......just to recap, the lineup for next week 19th August will be :

FERGUSSON : All the way from Australia, this guy is a brilliant player of both guitar and Irish Bouzouki, and has some excellent songs . A great blend of folkiness with a contemporary slant.

JESS MORGAN:  One of the most talked-about local singer songwriters , and with good reason ! Great songs, wonderful voice and a charming performer. Catch her in an intimate setting whilst you can.

BELINDA GILLETT/ELEPHANT : If, like us, you are already a fan of her acoustic stuff, you are going to love hearing Belinda in a band setting, and Elephant provide just the right kind of sympathetic setting for those emotive songs.

ED SHEERAN :  Loop station ahoy ! Young, contemporary, and almost unfairly talented ....this guy is impressive !

Plus , we still have a surprise guest dropping in to road-test a few new songs ...so be ready for an exclusive or two !

A whole evening of great musical entertainment in a beautiful setting for just £5.

Music will start around 8pm, but why not come early and sample a treat from the brand new Bedfords menu ? Just ring 01603-666869 and you can book a table in advance.

Hope to see you there !

I know that all mailing list members are already aware of this, and the lack of any advertising, flyers, or listings on our profile also probably convey this too, but may I just confirm that the Marcus Bonfanti/Lotte Mullan/Jinder gig we had pencilled in for tonight is NOT taking place as originally planned ....hence no further reference has been made to it since our blog at the beginning of July.

Sadly, once again recording comittments got in the way of our plans ...Marcus is by now well into the recording of a second album, and I believe Lotte has been busy in the studio working on her hotly-anticipated debut, whilst Jinder has been receiving some fully-deserved rave reviews for his recently-released album " 9cents from Benelux "

We are hoping that this gig may be re-scheduled for later in the year, and meanwhile apologise for any disappointment !

Our next gig ( as advertised ) is on Wednesday 19th August and will feature Fergusson ( all the way from New South Wales )  Jess Morgan ( a local treasure !) and  Belinda Gillett with her wonderful new band Elephant.  Please check them out by clicking their names on our " Next Gig " entry on our profile page . It should be another great night .

All the very best, and happy listening !

Hi there !

Following on from the wonderful show last week ( and if that sounds immodest, I am merely repeating the comments gleaned from audience members following the brilliant sets from the excellent Miller and Moore, the astonishing Paul Liddell, the mesmerising Cara Winter and her wonderful band and the stunning Alyssa Bonagura ! ) we are pleased to have no less than three upcoming gigs to announce to you, so please get your diaries out.....

WEDNESDAY 22nd JULY 2009 at 8.00pm

Our scheduled monthly night of musical goodness will comprise :

Julia Johnson : Vocalist/songwriter and pianist from acclaimed jazz/trip-hop/pop  band Second Person, Julia will be playing a solo set at the piano. This promises to be a magical and atmospheric set, full of beautiful melodies and  dazzling lyrics and is a rare opportunity to catch Julia performing outside of London.

Luke Jackson : Following his triumphant set at Grapevine a few months ago, we just had to have young Luke back. Now 15, he still writes, plays and sings with a maturity that far exceeds his years. Already one of the hardest working musicians on the circuit, Luke looks set for big things. Come and catch him in an intimate venue whist you still can.

Sam & Daisy : A long-awaited first appearance at Grapevine for this hugely entertaining brother and sister duo who cleverly combine effortless charm with an unexpected edginess. In short, this pair offer peerless acoustic-based indie-pop of the highest order.

There may well be a 4th artist added to the roster, but this is yet to be confirmed. Either way, this is another great lineup and promises to be a very fine evening.

We hope to see you there !

SUNDAY 26th JULY 2009 around 1pm : THE GRAPE OUTDOORS !!

It is summer, so what better way to spend an afternoon than enjoying a drink or two, a delicious barbecue and some equally delicious music ?  And for free ! ( Well, the music at least ! )

Yes...for one day only ( so it better be sunny ! ) we are taking the Grapevine outside into the daylight just outside Bedfords in the old lane ( one of the famous Norwich lanes, you know ! )

We have invited a number of artists down to entertain you and the list is growing daily, so why not come along and spend the afternoon in their company ? And if you have some friends who you think may be interested in the mysterious ways of the Grapevine, now is the chance for them to get a taste of it for free.

We will be posting a list of artists a little nearer the time , but if you would like to put this one in your diaries for the moment, you will not regret it .

WEDNESDAY 5th AUGUST : A GRAPEVINE SPECIAL !!!

Who says lightning never strikes twice ? Our last Grapevine Special featured three of the most amazing musicians we have ever had in the same night. We loved it, they had a ball, and the atmosphere and interplay between these three musical friends was a joy to witness. So, they asked if they could do it again as they love the venue and the wonderful listening audience ( that..s you ) . How could we refuse ??

So, welcome back :

JINDER : Whether as a solo artist or as lead vocalist for the excellent Mercurymen, Jinder is quite simply a brilliant performer. His new album 9cents from Benelux sold out at Amazon within two days of release, his songs are wonderful and he has a charming rapport with his audience.

LOTTE MULLAN : Soon to release her debut album, Lotte has one of those voices ...slightly husky, bluesy, and full of natural soul...and great, perceptive songs to match. She can make you laugh and break your heart(sometimes simultaneously ) A very special performer indeed.

MARCUS BONFANTI : One man folk/blues machine and self-styled blues pirate, Marcus is a genuine force of nature. An amazing guitarist, a powerhouse singer, a master of storytelling through song, and a very funny man with a great line in between-songs banter. Unmissable !

Now, any one of these  artists would be enough to promise a great night out, but put all three together and something magical is bound to happen. If you heard all about their last Grapevine appearance, now is your chance to catch up !

We have a few videos up from their last appearance here...not the highest quality, but certainly will give you a flavour of what was a night to remember.

I hope you can make it to one, some , or even all of these events and show your support for live music.

Thanks for your time, and I hope to see you soon.

Steve @ Grapevine xx

UPDATE !!!
Due to recording commitments, the gig scheduled for 5th August has had to be postponed ( as you may well have gathered from the lack of any reference to it on our profile ! ) Hopefully we will be able to re-schedule this for later in the year. Meanwhile, it is business as usual for Wedneday 19th August when we will be joined by Fergusson, Jess Morgan and Belinda Gillett/Elephant . Full details to follow !

WEDNESDAY 24th JUNE 2009

This promises to be yet another night to remember featuring a stunning lineup of fine singer/songwriters comprising :

ALYSSA BONAGURA :We are thrilled to have Alyssa in our June lineup. She is about to graduate from the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts and return home to Tennessee ( her parents are both highly-respected Nashville musicians ) via an appearance at Glastonbury, and has twice had songs featured on the LIPA annual CD ( once selected by Robin Gibb, and then by Fran Healy of Travis, both of whom predicted huge success for her) In short, Alyssa is going places, and rightly so. At just 21, she has amassed an impressive repertoire of finely-crafted, self-penned  heart-on-sleeve songs which she delivers in a manner that will touch the hardest of hearts. You can probably guess that we love her already...and you will too !

CARA WINTER : Already a firm favourite at Grapevine, Cara weaves an enchanting musical spell with her sometimes-offbeat imagery, beautiful voice and piano, and will hopefully be accompanied by some of her excellent band on the night. Like all the best music, Cara is impossible to pigeonhole, although fans of Tori Amos and Kate Bush will certainly find much to enjoy.  A very engaging performer with a disarming line in between-songs chat and a bubbly personality that belies the haunting quality of her music. Always an absolute treat !

PAUL LIDDELL : An exciting Sunderland-based singer/songwriter with a great voice and superb guitar technique and an impressive set of already- strong songs which become  multi-layered delights thanks to the use of loopstation and sundry other digital effects ( without ever stooping to gimmicry, of course ! ) The result has been described as a one-man acoustic rock machine ....which is every bit as exciting as it sounds ! Proof ( if any self-respecting Grapevine regular still needs it ! ) that acoustic music CAN rock.

MILLER & MOORE : Two excellent local singer/songwriters, Mark Miller and Stuart( Morning Blue ) Moore combine forces in this rather fine side-project. Expect some well-crafted songs delivered with great gusto by these two stalwarts of the local acoustic scene ...and be prepared to be singing one or two of them on the way home !

You can find out more about the artists by clicking on their names on our profile page, or on their photos in our top friends, and we also have photos and videos of some of our previous nights.

I hope this has whetted your appetite for a night of outstanding music in Bedfords, surely one of the finest bars in Norwich. Much has been said recently, by artists and audience members alike, about the special atmosphere of a Grapevine night....please come along and be a part of it.

Steve @ Grapevine at Bedfords, Norwich
