Category: Life

The city of Cardiff has been named as the most fun place to live in the UK, according to new research, which revealed that Cardiff had the biggest hoard of amusements; dubbing the city the most fun place in the UK. Lively Liverpool and bubbly Blackpool, on the other hand, appeared to have lost their sources of entertainment, coming bottom of the pile.

The research, carried out by gadgets and gizmos retailer ShinyShack.com, calculated the top and bottom 10 by looking at the number of sales in the last year, per 100,000 people in each city or town, and it revealed quite a few surprises.

Top Ten Most Fun Places to Live in the UK:

1. Cardiff – Luckily the Welsh central boasts more amusing attractions than just the accent.

2. Portsmouth- Nickname is 'Pompey'…ha, funny that.

3. Guildford- Is where those naughty pop princesses; Cheryl Cole (Girls Aloud) and Amelle Berrabah (Sugarbabes) were arrested for having too much fun with their fists.

4. London/South West/Battersea- The big smoke is firing fun off all cylinders.

5. Enfield- Is home to one of the most amusing tube stops on the London underground, Cockfosters, where all the cocks drink fosters…including one would presume Harry Enfield.

6. Brighton- With all those dancing queens it's not surprising Brighton is full of frolicking fun lovers.

7. Oxford – The masses of academics are clearly investing in some fun ways of relaxation; text books were so last year.

8. Reading- Reading is the cognitive process of delivering meaning from written or printed text….God it's no wonder they need some fun investments.

9. Twickenham – The rugger capital is also home to a disproportionately large number of public houses, which help keep the fun flowing.

10. Kingston upon Thames- Is home to a Toilet Gallery, it's no wonder residents are turning the other cheek and looking for alternative ways to have fun…

Bottom Ten Least Fun Places to Live in the UK:

1. Dudley - One of the main industries in Dudley's early years was coal; nice to see they have still kept the traditional 'bar humbug' attitude that goes with it.

2. Hull - Back in the day, Hull was originally a market town…they just weren't in the market for anything fun.

3. Falkirk - Home to the battle of Falkirk in 1298, which saw the defeat of William Wallace by King Edward I. A sad day, perhaps the residents haven't quite got over it yet.

4. Blackpool - The seaside town already indulges in enough pleasure on the beach; investing in more would just be considered greedy.

5. London/Westminster - It's full of politicians…ah, that explains it then.

6. Birmingham - Forced as the powerhouse of the Industrial revolution. All sounding a little bit like a history lesson…yawn.

7. Sheffield - The city of Sheffield has been occupied since at least the ice age; its sense of humour must still be frozen.

8. Glasgow -Meaning a 'dear green place'; doesn't exactly sound fun does it?!

9. Durham - The whole centre of Durham is a designated conservation area, fun is strictly prohibited at all times.

10. Liverpool - Packed full with all those mischievous Liverpudlian scousers, fun in the city is generated like fresh air. It is the peninsula of popular music and even boasts the Beetles, happy days.

Keeper of the Magic [isn't that just the best job title ever? - Debs] at ShinyShack, Anna Clare, commented;

"Our products are all about making lives more colourful and fun, so we thought it would be interesting to see which areas had made the most purchases. It came as no surprise to see Cardiff coming out top; the city oozes fun and vibrancy and this has been reflected in the results."

She continued,

"Guildford and Enfield were the shock investors; the large amounts of sales suggest that they are perhaps trying to make up for the lack of mischief on offer within the area. It was a surprise to see Blackpool so low on the list; obviously they have enough amusements to keep them occupied."

ShinyShack sells a huge range of gadgets and gizmos, and is based in the South West of the United Kingdom.

There's a new poll at the Welsh Bands Weekly Forum: should Welsh Bands Weekly attempt to get an interview with the Welsh X Factor contestants?

Go and join (takes but a couple of minutes) and cast your vote!

I said I would start a proper blog, and I have... I had hoped to host it at welshbandsweekly.com but frankly it was too complicated to set up and I didn't want to have to pay £50 to set up a database with my hosting company, so I've opted for a WordPress account.

You can find the new blog here: Welsh Blogs Weekly =^..^= Blogiau Cymreig Wythnosol - go check it out.

So, this will probably be the last of the blogging here at MySpace - although I'll continue to send out bulletins to our friends.

Got a text from Vickki tonight, impatient to see all the stuff I've been scanning.

So Vix, just for you, I've added a few of our old promo photos to our profile :)

In other scanning news, I finished the last of it tonight.  Which means that tomorrow night I can start building the Welsh Bands Weekly scrapbook.  Should be fun :)

In other non-scanning news, I've been lining up some interviews for the launch of welshbandsweekly.com. I'm not going to say who they're with - I quite enjoy being a little tease, hehe - but let's just say they're not unknowns...

Anyway that's enough teasing for one night.  Time for bed.  Boing!

It's  been a funny old night.

Knowing I had tons to do for welshbandsweekly.com, I thought I'd save a little time by getting a takeaway on the way home instead of cooking.  Having stuffed my face with a delicious chicken pathia from the Bengal Spice in Caernarfon (my favourite Indian restaurant) in record time (for me, anyway - I'm usually a very slow eater) and finding myself unable to eat more than half of it (also unusual for me), I plugged my laptop into the scanner and started scanning.  In fact, I've only just stopped - I scanned over 80 photos and still have loads of other memorabilia to scan tomorrow night.

But anyway, I digress.  The point is - why it's been a funny old evening - it was just so nice, but so sad, looking through those old memories.

Some stuff was really hilarious.  Some of our old promo photos really made me chuckle, as did some of the photos from the various eisteddfodau we visited over the years.

But on the other hand, photos of days and nights out, like Super Furry Animals playing in Virgin Megastore in '96, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci playing in the Cardiff Coal Exchange in '97, and hanging out with Gorky's and The Crocketts at the disco chippy in '98, made me feel really sad.

Not because they brought back bad memories; quite the opposite, in fact.  These photos made me really yearn for a time I'll never have back, and really REALLY made me miss hanging out with Vickki and Emma (Pixie).

Ten years is a lot of water under the bridge, I know, and we all have different things going on in our lives now, and different responsibilities.  We have different yardsticks by which to measure our fun times; we have grown-up holidays abroad that aren't about drinking ourselves sick, two of us have marriages and mortgages, two of us have really responsible jobs...

And Pixie?

Well, I'm pleased to report that in ten years she hasn't really changed much.  Still as mad as a box of frogs, still one of the most surreal people you'll ever meet; you can still rely on Pixie to come out with something that'll make you go "hunh?" at the most random times.

And that's why I'm really pleased that she's bringing back Inside Emma, her old Welsh Bands Weekly column.  We're not sure quite what she's going to do with it yet - either she's keeping it a surprise or she doesn't even know herself yet - but one thing we can rely on is the promise that it'll be just as nonsensical as it ever was.

As for recapturing past experiences, well, we know that the past is the past and we'll never bring it back (not without a DeLorian and a flux capacitor, anyhoo).  So that's why we've decided that once we've launched welshbandsweekly.com, we're going to have a for-old-times'-sake sesh in Cardiff, to which everyone is invited.  Don't get too excited; we're not buying the drinks - but we hope a few of our old friends will want to come along and say hello, as well as those of you that have yet to experience Welsh Bands Weekly and the utter chaos it once stood for.

Just don't be surprised if we sneak off early to put our slippers on and have a cup of cocoa

I've been slogging like a sloggy thing on the site all weekend, and am delighted to find that I now have most of the English site finished.  Apart from a couple of pages of content, a large amount of image scanning and a few apps that I need to install to make clever things happen (not telling you what - it's a surprise!), the English site is pretty much finished.  By my reckoning, I should have finished by the end of next weekend and be ready to start building the Welsh site the following week.

So what we now have is an 'about us' section that is complete apart from a history (almost written) and a scrapbook (yet to be created); all the back issues are done, as are all the 'missing' articles from the elusive Issue 9½. Of course, we still have no new interviews or reviews as yet, but fear not!  We've been making some enquiries and hope the new site will be graced with some rather fabulous interviews (again - not telling you who with; it's a secret!) at launch.  By the way - if you're interested in being interviewed for the new site, or have anything you'd like us to review, please email me at iawncont@welshbandsweekly.com ASAP.

As for the Welsh site... well, a lot of that is going to depend on the translating.  Of course the pages already exist in English, so some of the work is already done... but obviously we do need to get all the content translated into Welsh, so the sooner we get some volunteers to help out with the translation, the sooner the site will go live.

I'm tentatively estimating a 'live' date of somewhere in mid-October... again though, I can't stress enough how much this will depend on getting some help with the translating.  If I have to do it all myself (and we all know my Welsh is OK but it's not *that* hot) then we could be looking at a 'live' date of October 2008!  If you'd like to volunteer, please email iawncont@welshbandsweekly.com.

Well, it wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be!

There I was, "cachu briciau" as I told Huw on the phone, but in the event I quite surprised myself by being able to ramble on without imbibing any alcohol... usually that's the only way I can speak Welsh confidently!

We talked about what Welsh Bands Weekly was, when it was around, what it's going to be like, why I'm bringing it back, and about our quest to find writers and translators (anyone reading this who would like to get involved: please email iawncont@welshbandsweekly.com).

Anyway - if you missed it, you can listen again here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/cymru_aod.shtml?cymru/huw_stephens_mon - my bit is just over 30 minutes into the show.

I'm going to be on Huw's show tonight, talking about Welsh Bands Weekly's relaunch.

"Shitting bricks" might be an accurate way to describe how I'm feeling... it's been YEARS since I had to do anything like this, and my Welsh is a bit on the rusty side...

So if you fancy a giggle at me attempting to speak Welsh and make some sort of sense, tune in!

As someone quite rightly pointed out to me recently, it's all well and good blogging on MySpace - a blog is a business essential, after all - but some people don't have (or want, or remember their login details for) a MySpace account, which means they can't comment on any posts we put up.

Not only that, but the 'subscribe' link isn't terribly obvious, there are no trackbacks, no categories, and several other reasons why a proper blog would be preferable.

So, as well as working on creating the new Welsh Bands Weekly website, I'm also going to put together a WordPress blog which will be hosted at blog.welshbandsweekly.com.

One of the great things about having a real blog is that every time a change is made to the main site - a new interview added, for example - I'll blog about it, and anyone who's subscribed will know about those changes in a flash.

Anyway - will blog here when it's done.
