Knoxify's review of "The Coming and The Going"

Vertigo produces a sound that is difficult to define. That’s not a bad thing; it’s actually a plus. Over the years the band has grown in their sonic range. With The Coming and the Going, the band adds dense layers of noise and texture that separate them from most local rock bands. That said, the core is still firmly rooted in a strong, rhythmic rock base. The aforementioned layered textures are a nice addition. Their previous album, …and Miles to Go Before We Sleep, showed glimpses and peeks of the step forward that they actually take with The Coming and the Going.

This progression is not wholly surprising. The band is filled, front-to-back and side-to-side, with people at the top of their game. Lindsey Stamey is a premier vocalist with the ability to bounce between singing beautifully to screeching incoherently. Sometimes it’s the subtle nuance of her vocal performance that takes a song from two-and-a-half stars to a four-star completed effort. But that’s not a slight, in the least, to the music that she sings along to.

Her brother, Justin Stamey, provides very strong, dense [in a good way] drumming that is quite literally a sight to see. He furiously pounds on the skins in total isolation and with complete clarity. To put it crudely, he’s a helluva drummer.
Concurrently, Nathan Engels continually supplies a well-engineered bass line that stays to the back of the classroom until it’s time for him to step forward, stepping up to the front, and shredding through the progression of all around him.
Which leaves us with Joel Rudnick on guitar. Rudnick is a tremendous guitar player, a fact that all too often is not fully appreciated. Sometimes that’s of his own volition, providing textures and pure sonic noise to the track as opposed to giant, stadium-like guitar solos. In fitting with Vertigo’s overall sound, this is a perfect match and the crux behind every song that truly stands out.

The song “Wraith” is a stand out for the way it builds into the chorus. The music seems to be teetering on the precipice, only to explode once the chorus goes into full measure, which is a nice touch.
Why “Ethelle” is not a radio hit I haven’t the foggiest. Beginning to end, it has that certain drive that would fit perfectly on UTK or The X. Plus, the lyrics are really well-crafted.

“Techne” showcases Nathan’s ability to step up to the forefront while still interspersing Joel’s light touches throughout. Nice jingly tune with a good mixture of old and new school techniques.

The title track is a nice departure, somewhat, like the song “Melatonin” is on …and Miles to Go Before We Sleep. It’s also a good example of the use of layers on this album. Lindsey’s vocals waft over the music almost as just another instrument.
The only detraction, which is one I’ve held onto from the early days, is that I’d like to see the speed and voracity that the band has the ability to produce be laid down on a studio album. Vertigo has the talent to go faster; I just wish they’d let it all hang out and go for it on a few tracks. But that’s just me… and may not count for much considering I own a plethora of Dire Straits albums.

Vertigo is an up-and-coming alternative and experimental rock band
from Knoxville,TN. The album is completely amazing with everything a
band needs to succeed on a sophomore album. "The Coming And The Going"
definitely stands tall and is by-far not a sophomoric flop. They
succeed in making it on this album due to the fact it is has fast
paced songs and perfectly interlaced slow songs. The tracks that
definitely stick to me as hits right off the bat(mind you this album
is 14 tracks of pure lyrical genius): Typical, The Anchors In My
Shoes, and Techne. The band definitely needs to be signed on a major
label so they can be touring constantly and show the world what great
music they have to showcase. This Cd is for fans of 10 Years, A Skylit
Drive, and Lacuna Coil. Check out more about this band @

Lindsey Stamey of Vertigo is Down with Gogol Bordello

Vertigo with Social Ghost and Scaria the Wolf
When: Friday, June 5, 2009, 8 p.m.
Where: The Cider House, 940 Blackstock Ave., Knoxville
Cost: $7
Age limit: All ages

Morristown modern rock band Vertigo’s profile is quickly rising—their second full-length CD, The Coming and the Going, is coming out in July (with national distribution by Koch and Hot Topic), they just played Sundown in the City with Gavin Rossdale, and they’re scheduled for Bonnaroo on Sunday, June 14. They’re also headlining at the Cider House this weekend, which might be one of your last chances to see them in a club anytime soon. Here’s what vocalist Lindsey Stamey has been listening to lately.

Gogol Bordello, Super Taranta! (SideOneDummy/Rubric, 2007)

This is my new favorite band. I heard about them a few years ago from an Elijah Wood interview where he was promoting the movie Everything Is Illuminated—coincidentally the singer is also co-star, which I just recently found out. I checked out the band and couldn’t really get into it at that point. Maybe I was too young. Who knows? It wasn’t until I watched the movie Wristcutters recently that Gogol Bordello was brought back up. Their song “Through the Roof ’n’ Underground” shows up a few times in the movie and by the end I had to own it and everything from who wrote it. Come to find it was the band that I so rudely dismissed years before. I just recently bought everything they ever made.

Silversun Pickups, Swoon (Dangerbird, 2009)

I’ve been waiting for their new release for what seems forever. Their first release, Carnavas, was defiantly stuck in my CD player for a long time and I can now say the same thing about Swoon. It’s gotten to the point where people in the van are getting pretty annoyed. Everything about them is so passionate and perfect. The song “Growing Old Is Getting Old” builds until you think your heart might explode.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Greatest Hits (Rhino, 2005)

I grew up listening to CSN&Y. I realized a few weeks ago when I was comparing the harmonies of Fleet Foxes to being almost as velvet as CSN&Y that I sinfully did not own one album. I went out that day and bought their greatest hits and figured that was a start. I wept for the nostalgia of “Our House” with my headphones on in the dark of my bedroom. My parents sang it to me often and I was sure someone wrote it about us. It was like finding an old comforting baby blanket.

Vertigo soars with Bonnaroo gig, CD release

Bonnaroo-bound: Morristown’s Vertigo is heading to Bonnaroo next week after recent shows opening for Gavin Rossdale and Heart. Bonnaroo-bound: Morristown’s Vertigo is heading to Bonnaroo next week after recent shows opening for Gavin Rossdale and Heart.

Vertigo

Also on the bill: Social Ghost and Scarla, The Wolf
When: 9 p.m. Friday, June 5
Where: The Cider House (adjacent to the Valarium)
Admission: $7
Plus: Vertigo performs at Bonnaroo at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Troo Music Lounge Cafe

Vertigo has played a slew of big name shows around town as of late, but its biggest is yet to come. With a new album hitting stores and an upcoming slot at Bonnaroo, the band has taken to shows both large and small in preparation for the milestones to come.
In a busy few months, Vertigo’s highlights include an acoustic set, opening for Heart, at The Tennessee Theatre on May 22 and a May 14 Sundown in the City show, opening for Gavin Rossdale. The shows were perfectly timed for Vertigo, who prepares to release its second full-length album “The Coming and the Going” and perform at Bonnaroo this month.
“I have to say I enjoyed this one even more,” says guitarist Joel Rudnick of the band’s second Sundown gig. “The sound was perfect, we avoided rain and we were on our top game, performance-wise. Mr. Rossdale was very polite and kind in his own British way, and was not afraid to mingle among the public, which I respected. ... Our performance was a fun one, and we have streamlined our show more this time around to make it more of a continuous, dynamic event rather than just 8 or 10 songs with a few seconds of silence between them. I do think our pairing was somewhat stylistically driven regarding Rossdale’s work with Bush, as some of our music does have certain elements similar to that of the ’90s grunge era.”
While pleased with the caliber of shows it has had already this spring, Vertigo’s most anticipated outing will be playing the final night of this year’s Bonnaroo. The band is scheduled to play the Troo Music Lounge Café at 7:30 p.m. on June 14. The opportunity to play the exponentially popular, rural Manchester event holds a special appeal for the Morristown band that has created a name for itself in a relatively small town in the same state.
“We were asked to do the Bonnaroo festival a month or two ago and were pretty ecstatic about it when we heard,” Rudnick says. “It’s really kind of surreal to go from eating up pavement on the road constantly to performing at one of the largest outdoor festivals in the country for a week. However, we are very grateful and are looking forward to capturing the whole experience of it, and in doing so, melding our brand of creation into the artistic fabric that is the lineup.”
But don’t think the band’s impressive credentials have gone to Vertigo’s collective head. With its nose to the grindstone, the band plays as many nearby shows as possible, including frequent acoustic sets at regional Hot Topic stores. Rudnick points out that small shows like these are valuable promotions for same-day shows as well as Vertigo merchandise, which the stores carry.
After a long wait, “The Coming and the Going” is due for official release on June 28. Recorded in Johnson City last winter, Vertigo originally scheduled the album’s release show for February 6, but the concert was postponed on account of construction delays at The Valarium’s new Cider House addition. Friday the band is finally playing that long-awaited show.
“We are very much looking forward to doing so because from what I can tell, the room is going to sound amazing and the place has a very cool rock bar vibe,” says Rudnick. “It’s been a little while since we’ve delved into the Knoxville club circuit, and we might be trying a few new things live this time around to get ready for our Bonnaroo performance.
Friday, June 5, Vertigo performs at The Cider House along with Florida’s Social Ghost and Knoxville’s own Scarla, The Wolf. The show kicks off at 9 p.m. and costs $7. The band will fill out the rest of the weekend playing in Newport, Ky., Saturday, both at Hot Topic and The Southgate House before hitting the stage at Bonnaroo June 14.
n DONE AND DUNN: Singer/songwriter Joe Dunn joins Nashville outfit Overzealous and The Tammies on stage at The World Grotto Friday, June 5. The show is slated for 10 p.m., and admission is $5 for legal drinkers and $7 for under-agers.
