Eight-piece Latin ska-tos Upground are on the verge of becoming East L.A.'s next big thing, following the footsteps of hometown legends Los Lobos and Chicano roqueros Quetzal. Locally, the former marching band geeks have already opened for synth-rock upstarts The Killers, electronic dance DJs The Chemical Brothers and Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello.

Formed in 1999, Upground's current lineup has been together since 2003 and consists of keyboardist Chris De Los Santos, saxophonist Eric Carillo, vocalist and guitarist Danny Estrada, vocalist and trumpet player Everado García, bassist Chris "Bolillo" Manjarrez, drummer Adolfo Mercado, Jr., saxophonist Aaron Perez, and trombonist Joseph Quiñones. Seven of the eight members are alumni of Garfield High School, the alma mater of boxer Oscar De La Hoya, comedian Carlos Mencia and three of Los Lobos: David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano and Cesar Rosas. With members ranging from 18 to 23 years old, the group earned their big break after cruising to victory in the 2006 Sprint Battle of the Bands, a competition that landed them free shoes and, perhaps, more importantly, free music equipment.

In 2006, the horn-y band released their debut, Feel The Vibe, featuring tracks like Oye Chica, a sunny, laid back reggae-cumbia, and "Skanking Monkeys," upbeat ska-punk punctuated with sharp horn stabs and a shuffling bassline. Upground is often compared to fellow genre-hoppers Ozomatli, and just like their "big brothers", they thrive in a live setting. Their rambunctious onstage antics made them an obvious choice to perform at this year's SXSW alongside Quetzal.

Style (Latin / Ska / Reggae)
Grab your girl and hit the club for some dancing. What a fun CD this is from such a young band, and over time they will only get better.
As the name of the CD implies there is a vibe that grabs hold of you, spins you around, and doesn't let you stop moving for a breather until the end. Many months back I was at the Whiskey to cover a band's performance and an opening act had this same sound (maybe it's the same band, I don't know) and I can still remember how awesome the music was live, how high the energy level in the club was, and the personality the music had from such young musicians. Maybe I'm drawing too many similarities between two different bands but there can't be that many Latin / Ska young bands in LA able to pull this off. Like I said, this is a fun CD, and there's no way such a sound will suck live, unless they have a terribly off night, which I doubt, so these guys are definitely worth a look if you dig Latin / Ska music played well.

Upground offer an able if unremarkable stew of ska-rock on Feel the Vibe, also drawing from Latin music (to the point of singing a few songs in Spanish), funk, reggae toasting, (lightly) dub, and (very lightly) jazz. As on so many records of this type, there's an upbeat party-hard flavor that sometimes borders on the speakeasy-ish, though it's not quite as party-til-you-drop as many such efforts are. The songs are less impressive as compositions than as vehicles for the band's considerable skills as instrumentalists and fusers of different styles, which sometimes make them sound like a blend of The Average White Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, though with more ska in the mix than either of those acts featured. That's mostly on the funkier tunes with horns, however; they sometimes tilt in a much more pronounced reggae or Latin direction, giving the impression they could fill out sets exclusively devoted to one or the other of the musics from which they draw if they so desired. ~ All Music Guide

so we (upground)played once again with ozo at this kool new venue called the wavehouse and even though i got the usual underage special survalence on me it was all good cause 5 minutes before we go on ARTURO VELASCO orginal poncho sanchez trombone player and the jazz on the latin side basically hes a big deal .. like the master trombone player, anyway all of the sudden i flipout and quickly introduce myself to him i flipped out even more when he said he heard about me and was interested in giving lessons ..the best part was me and tony got to jam with ozo on stage with one of the fatest horn lineups since the first one ...arturo/shef/uli/asdru/and myself

and that was quit an experiance but enough about me ..im pretty excited cause i get to tell all of you about the new E.P were working on ..its SUPERMADNESS we cant wait to release it, and i deffinatley cant wait to record it ..we have been working hard and quetzal is working us hard to make sure we do what we do best. so check it out soon

YUP -THAT'S RIGHT!! We were so fortunate to have worked with these great people for our upcoming CD (still w/out a name). We meet with Quetzal Flores (of Quetzal) on Monday and hopefully start production soon. Wildog produced one of the tracks " The Starting Line" and Cava did back ups. Robert Carranza who does all of Quetzal, Ozomatli, Jack Johnson... bottom line he's the man- we got to work with him as well. And then there's the amazing Martha Gonzalez (of Quetzal) she came in and wrote a song with us, if we get it right hopefully that to will be on our new CD (still w/out a name). All we have to say is THANK YOU. We've been fortunate to have met many great musicians and we have amazing fans!

June 13 - Friday the 13th yikes! We are on our way to Center Staging to produce/record/edit and make a video for McDonalds. Myspace & McDonalds  selected a few artist(and we are fortunate to be one of those) to work on the new BIGMAC CHANT they are getting ready to kick off a major contest so they asked us to take part of the intial phase (along with Nina Sky, Christina Milian, The Procession and a few others)It's going to be a long day,but it will be worth it. What better way to spend the day than in a major recording studio doing what we love to do.......MUSIC!!

Stay tuned -the video and "jingle" will be ready and up n running by Monday! We'll ask you what you think when its out.
