PS. Do you remember when we asked you to take action and ask the Government to “Stop The Stealing From Forests” http://www.justact.org.au/action-36-illegal-logging-is-stealing/ ? Now you can keep the pressure on encouraging the Commonwealth Government to keep its election promise and stop illegal timber imports by building your own letter on the easy to use Say NO to Bad Wood website here http://www.saynotobadwood.org/

He has brought down rulers from their thrones. But he has lifted up people who are not important. He has filled those who are hungry with good things. But he has sent those who are rich away empty. ~ Luke 1: 52-53 (NIV)

JustAct poverty busters for Anti-Poverty Week 2009…

There are plenty of initiatives that aim their sights at global poverty, such as the fair trade and anti-sweatshop movements. There are also the Millennium Development Goals – positive global goals in areas such as tackling the lack of educational opportunities and environmental sustainability and, most importantly, reducing poverty and hunger generally. A more peaceful world results in less want – less money on bullets and more money for feeding children. Get ready for the Anti Poverty Week 2009 (11-17 October) where you can actively promote action in these areas.

We have some mighty challenges (poverty busters) leading up to the week- check them out here
http://www.justact.org.au/action-39-fight-poverty/action-39-fight-poverty-challenges/

You may even want to Do It Yourself and design an event like a backyard BBQ where you can promote the poverty busters for the week- see how here

International students are visitors to our country; we should be hospitable. In some cases they will be future citizens. International students contribute an enormous amount to our economy. Victorian international students should get the same public transport concessions as domestic students (as is the case in Tasmania).

Take action now to welcome and support international students in our community.

Article 1 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” Yet there are situations occurring not only around the world but right here in Australia where human rights are not being respected or protected.
Check out http://www.justact.org.au/action-35-realise-human-rights/, the new action up on JustAct, to learn more about these situations and to find out how you can have a say on human rights and let the government know what rights are important to you.

JustAct has had some technical difficulties over the past 2 months so we apologise and are back with a bumper action for this month (we also have a new advert* for JustAct).

Make the Humanitarian Program More Humane....

Recent boatloads of asylum seekers at our shores have brought Australia's immigration policies into the spotlight once again. Since the Rudd government came into  power in 2007 a lot has been promised.

But more than a year on we are still waiting for progress on some of the main issues facing people seeking asylum in our country
This month we are focusing on…
The practice of billing asylum seekers for their time in detention...
The overall number of refugees we accept...
The policy of indefinite mandatory detention ...

Check out this month’s action Make The Humanitarian Program More Humane to learn more about these issues and ways you can help make Australia more humane for people seeking asylum.
