Current mood:  calm
Finally we’re back! It feels like we’ve been away for years, not months but we finally ventured out into the world again last Thursday when we played at the Amplified night up in Carrickfergus. It was good to see our old mates The Good Fight again who were great as always, plus Heyday who we haven’t seen since the Lisburn MusicQuest night Just under a year ago.

Unbeknownst to us the Gigging NI folks were present at and gave us a really nice review:

“…I don't know how much more the crowd can get warmed up, having the winners of ATL open for you, although Sparks Fly were fortunate to have that. But they themselves have drawn many plaudits. Not only acknowledged by Larry Little, ex-Killers manager, and Steve Strange, Snow's Patrol US agent, Sparks Fly have been played on a number of radio stations including BBC6 Music and BBC Radio One, impressed? Definitely. Their indie tunes were driven forward by some moments of glorious slow-burning riffs that set their performance alight. It's pretty hard not to like their song "Creatures" with it's rough gritty riff and it's pretty solid chorus to show off frontman's Rory vocals skills. In a set which highly impressed me, it's no wonder why Sparks Fly are held in such high regard. Unlike many bands, Sparks Fly achieved all this within the space of a year - alright for some eh?”

Hello folks! It’s been a long time since we checked in with y’all so we figured that we’d let you know what we’ve been up to in the past month or so.

Erm, let me think there was… ah, no, that happened over a month ago.  Maybe the thing with the…?  no wait, that was a dream.  OK so the truth is there hasn’t been an awful lot going on because we decided to take a little bit of a break after the IMRO showcase while we all rested up after the huge amount of work that went into the album recording and single launch.  Rory has been sunning himself in Mexico, Scott has been devoting his free time to his other passion, caring for the elderly, Raymie is busy with a new addition to his family, Chris was last seen in the Congo trying to buy himself a wife and steve has spent 30 days in a ditch at the bottom of the Ormeau Road making what he calls ‘modern art’ out of discarded cigarette butts and dead birds and shouting incoherently at passers by.

But our break is almost over now and we’ve bathed Steve in disinfectant and are beginning to discuss getting back out there and more importantly, the release of the album. We’ll be racking up the gigs again from June and hopefully debuting some new material so look out for us!

....................

Arrrghh!! I can't believe there hasn’t been a blog about this already. Tomorrow, yes tomorrow!! Is one of the biggest events we've ever planned, our single launch at the Stiff Kitten.

Radio stations across the UK have been plugging it, posters are up all over Belfast and we've deployed Raymie with one of those promotional Segways to roam around Belfast shouting "Sparks Fly!!"  "Stiff kitten!!" (which reminds us we must post his bail in time for tomorrow).

The amazing Pocket Promise have their keyboards primed and ready for warming your cockles with their beautiful songs, Skruff have been polishing their barnets for the past week and preparing their high energy riffage and we've been sitting huddled over our amplifiers practicing solos bass runs and drum fills so that we can put on the best show we've ever played.

it's going to be amazing, and in something that must be a first in Sparks Fly history , Steve has even promised to stay off the glue until the end of our performance.

The Plastic Rose guys will be in charge of the tunage afterwards and we will be milling around getting as plastered as we possibly can so we can drag our favorite photographer Matt Patton up to dance to whatever madness they bring to the proceedings. Look out for Chris, he'll be the one doing the Saturday Night fever dance thinking he looks cool.

So come down, there'll be singles for sale and lots of shenanigans!

Just a quick update with an interview and a review of yesterdays show at the Speakeasy.  Both by photographers oddly:

ANIMAL DISCO

By Matthew Alexander Patton

When your interview is punctuated by Fleet Foxes flowing out of the P.A mid discussion and the (albeit welcome) interruption by the editor of this ‘zine no less, shouting “I need your journalism!”, you do start to wonder - just what do Belfast rockers Sparks Fly make of all this…

“…I‘ll buy you copy as a present and let you listen to it.”

Charming.

Relaxed yet serious about their music - Rory, Scott, Steve, Raimi and the absent (due to injury) Chris have steadily grown as a band since coming together, gaining local fans quickly before seeing success on a larger scale - winning a Battle of the Bands competition, and being called to Dublin last Summer for HWCH.

“Hard Working Class Heroes was brilliant, we had been going less than a year whenever we got asked to do that so that was a big deal for us. The whole event itself was just phenomenal. We are in Start Together (Studio) with Ben at the minute. We were in two weeks ago, recording our new single ‘Creatures’ which is going to be out on the 30th of March via worldwide digital download - iTunes, Tunecore, TxtaTrack all that, and we have the single launch party on the 25th of March, in the Stiff Kitten.”

Certainly, Sparks Fly’s fortune is not hollow. Their distinct, powerful sound manages to be light on the ears rather than heavy - reminiscent of bands like the Manic Street Preachers, echoing their familiar vocals and accessible riffs. Being a fellow Manics fan, Steve took that as a compliment (and I kept my teeth) whilst Rory and Scott took the discussion in a more technical direction.

“I would agree with that to an extent. There’s a certain chord progression with the Manic Street Preachers - it tends to be E Major to A Minor for any of you buffs - and I like that sort of Major/Minor sound. In the studio recently, everybody was chipping in. We all know exactly what we want to sound like, and because there are three guitars in the band there’s a lot of arranging to be done. A reference I heard the other day actually was Queens Of The Stone Age and I wasn’t really happy about that…”

“…we’re a bit slower, deliberate and…melodic. All three guitars are doing three completely different things, but they all compliment each other. We have three guitarists…so it is always going to be a big sound.”

With catchy, open lyrics such as “I like the way a song takes you elsewhere…” (from Save Some For Me) complimented by detailed, paced arrangements it is hard not to think of them as major festival material, - not headlining, but in a cult spot with a dedicated fan base. Their music is a reminder of just how much I enjoy that bright style of rock, which isn’t heavy but still has more than enough body behind it to sate your hunger for heavier fare.

As the chat turns towards Kings Of Leon, LastFM profiles and thoughtful insights into the merits of Agadoo, the last words must go to bassist Steve.

“…we have a particularly attractive bass player.”

RADAR LIVE - Sparks Fly The Varionis
and Patiosounds

By Ronan McGrade

The Speakeasy in Queens has been a mixed bag for me in the past because on my last visit the organisers were running round telling audience members to be quiet because the singer couldn't concentrate - a wee bit strange, do you not agree, for a live music venue serving buckets of beer to very thirsty students?!

Thankfully last night proved a very different experience with some great tunes, great beer and all the cheering your lungs could handle permitted!  First to the stage were Sparks Fly.  In the past they have been described as "a harmony driven breath of fresh air", but even that statement doesn't do them justice.  They are an intelligent band who's songwriting and arrangements are very deliberate - each song is cared for from conception right through to completion like a child being nurtured - and this is very clear in the finished product.  The brightness of their songs could put a smile on the sourest of faces in these recessionary times.

Next up were The Varionis.  They sang, they swaggered... they failed to convince me.  Mediocre songs and mop-top haircuts might have worked for Oasis but these lads have a way to go yet.

Finishing off the night were Patiosounds.  This was the first time I have seen them live and they certainly did not disappoint.  Pounding indie rock was on the menu for the evening and the rapidly swelling crowd hadn't eaten for a week.  Their set was made up of driving tunes, including the fantastic Cicero Tale, with a sexy little slow number thrown in the middle, no doubt aimed at the lovely ladies in the venue!  It was a very confident performance from a talented band to watch out for.

With quality acts like these on the rise it is a very exciting time in the N.Ireland music scene.  Is it coincidence that the two stand out bands from last night had Fermanagh men in them?*

*Please note Sparks Fly in no way endorse the use of Fermanagh men in stand out bands of any type without first consulting your doctor

Chris normally takes care of your usual blog goodness but he wont be available for quite some time. As I am writing this Chris is curled up in a ball on his bathroom floor mumbling to himself after having witnessed the horror of a tramps cock!! Thats right after answering what seemed to be an innocent ring of the bell at Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast, Chris was flashed by a beardy tramp. If you had witnessed this in the same week you decided to take the stabilizers off your bike (Which did not go well, see previous blog) you would be curled up in a ball and having nightmares as well, Chris we wish you a speedy recovery.

Now since our last update we played UITA with the lovely Bruised Fruit bunch. We have played gigs for BF in the past but never UITA and it was great, the new Auntie Annies layout is ace, Albrechts Pencil and the reno room where class. We really enjoyed it so thanks to all who came down and to BF for putting us on.

Yesterday tramp flashing aside, saw us back in the studio with Ben at Start Together. I really cant say enough good things about Mr Ben McAuley. We recorded 'I' and it sounds fantastic, some vintage tape echo, acoustic guitars and a drum sound i cant even describe "That might be the best floor tom i have ever heard" -Ben McAuley

Some vintage tape echo, yesterday

We are back in with Ben this week end, which finishes our recording for the time being. So whats next? Well Radar on thursday for one but its the launch for our new single 'Creatures' we are most excited about Wed 25th March in the Stiff Kitten with Skruff, Pocket Promise and A Plastic Rose DJs! We are working so hard on the promotion of this so if your free please come down would be great to see some friendly faces.

You can keep up to date with all things Sparks Fly via me on twitter just click this link www.twitter.com/scott_evil

Chris will be back updating soon but if his blogs have a darker tone, we know why

Current mood:  warm

We're a bit late for this week's blog update and for that I'm sorry but there is an interesting tale behind it...

Last weekend was a busy one for us, Friday saw our long awaited appearance with the incomparible A Plastic Rose at the Spring and Airbrake and Saturday and Sunday had us back in Start Together to get Forever Endevor and I recorded.  However on Thursday disaster struck when Chris came a cropper on his bike and wrecked both his hands, leaving him completely unable to play the guitar!

The band were left with no choice but to play on, lest they face the drunken fury of the APR guys.  Despite being one member down the gig was pretty special, and because we were the opening act we had the oppertunity to sit back, relax and enjoy the ubercool Disconnect Four and be treated to one of the best performances we've seen from A Plastic Rose. Their new EP is out now BTW, your ears will love forever if you go out and get it.

Best photographer in Northern Ireland and party mentalist Matthew Patton was running around with his camera so if you didn't make it down here is a few pics to show you what you missed:

Scott Rocks out

Gerry from APR gives it his best Dave Grohl

Steve in a rare moment of sobriety

Disconnect 4

Slightly the worse for wear the next morning we headed down to Start Together where we attacked Forever Endoevour with vigour and gusto.  Although unable to actually play, Chris more than made up for it by making sure that he had something to say about every single step of the recording process.  We usually ignore him when he gets like this but we felt sorry for him so we nodded and smiled and made our best effort to pretend to care. By the end of the day the song was tracked we were ready on Sunday to record 'I'.

But it didn't happen that way, on Sunday after about an hour of getting drums sorted we heard an almighty racket coming from the floor below.  It turned out that a music workshop had booked the live room of the Oh Yeah Centre downstairs, so there was no chance of getting any recording done. Bah! Good news is that we'll be heading down this sunday to finish what we started, hooray!

More news on the single release, Creatures is as we speak being sent to radio stations, mags and blogs the length and breadth of the country so keep an ear out, you might hear us at a radio station near you! The song has been sent to aggregators so hopefully by the time March 30th rolls around you will be able to buy 'Creatures' from Napster and iTunes the like. If you can't wait until then, using the power of your mobile phone you can buy a copy by following these simple steps:

1. Find your mobile phone
2. write a text message that says 'track 2497'
3. send the text message to 83262

You will then be sent a text which will include a link to download Creatures when it is released! Oh, and it only costs a pound!

Owch, My head still hurts. Not because we were off on some crazed weekend Buckfast and Ketamine escapade but because we've been spending the past two days in a darkened room just listening. You know the way that when you listen to a song on headphones you can really pick it apart, finding different layers and little nuances that you could never hear on your stereo? Well, imagine that times a thousand, and then span it over two days. Then do it when you just can't anymore. Ouch.

Creatures is now, as cooler people than us would put it, in the can and let me tell you its big, seventy two individual tracks worth of big. It crunches, it stomps, it soars and for a little bit it even snuggles up to you and sings you to sleep. As you can probably tell we're just a little bit proud of it.

We started work early on Saturday morning at Start Together Studios in Belfast city centre. grizzled and grumpy four of us tried to bring ourselves back to the land of the living with excessive amounts of coffee while Raymie, who walked in bright and breezy as if he'd just been for a run laid down the drums for creatures and then, almost as an aside since he had ten mins to spare while guitars were tuned, effortlessly laid down the drums for Forever Endeavour in one take. Legend.

Over the course of the Saturday the bones of the song were laid down in between fnar fnaring at innuendo laden remarks from our Sid James' in residence Steve (why did Scott have to choose a Big Muff guitar pedal? It's almost impossible not to!) and nerding out over all the retro musical gadgetry. The accidental pressing of a button on producer (and all round gentleman) Ben's church organ while messing around in between takes was a lightbulb moment which led to a lilting vibraphone being added the next day.

Sunday was all about layers. More guitars we added for extra beef, a thudding piano part added menace to the verses and a whirling Hammond lifted the chorus. Things got a bit Sgt Pepper in the afternoon when experiments with feedback led to us plugging a stylophone into the biggest, dirtiest amp we could find, putting it in a massive echoy room and recording some Morse code.

After a break so we could restore some element of sanity to the proceedings Rory added his vocals. Low vocals, mid vocals and some that were so high we're sure we must have annoyed some local dogs during the recording.

After all the tracking was complete it was down to Ben who studiously panned and EQ'ed, picking apart the mass of tracks and brought the whole thing together. As soon as the mixing was done it was sent to the US for mastering and the final, finished product will be with us shortly.

To whet your appetite for the release, here's a little preview of the artwork:

Its coming.  Oh yes.
