What I love most about this album is the way it unflinchingly discusses the travails of becoming a functioning adult, without ever failing to bring the story back to the center. Any pain is met with a larger view, or a conflicting perspective, that means even the most painful memory is not only bearable, but will eventually become part of the beauty we create.

As a meditative instruction booklet for self-love, for love of others, and for honoring our spirit, the sentiments are tempered by Leslie's playfulness and love of both words and music, offering us a glimpse of a quirky and deeply felt hope that, in listening, begins to feel nothing less than essential.

Inspiring but never cloying, delighting but never naïve, YOUR HAIR IS ON FIRE demonstrates a hard-won strength and ability to accept the realities of life and love, on the way to discovering their mysteries. I love its unique perspective: voice sultry as a pop princess, heart as strong as a folk goddess, and words as inspiring as a Christian hitmaker or self-help guru. What Leslie has crafted here is a persona that takes its hints from all three, while remaining true to her own vision. Leslie's faith, like her humor, is universal.

"American Dream Man" is a sassy ode to romantic perfection, but one very specific to Leslie's own quirky vision. What could be a country tune about settled or conventional romantic bliss becomes a hilarious listing of idiosyncrasies and bravura fantasies. This first single makes the mission statement clear: this is Leslie's world, and we're lucky enough to live in it.

Well-chosen title track "Your Hair Is On Fire" is a dub-inflected pop fantasy, a four-minute rock opera in dream-language. It is reminder of personal power, and the healing that's already and always available to us all. Its complex, bass-heavy presentation belies the simplicity and power of its message, like a soothing lullaby for pain.

The sensual and self-consciously coy "All The Way" discusses the romantic journey in oblique language, lush instrumentation lending a mature air to the song's face-front come-on, which manages to evoke the highs and lows of intimacy -- and the chase -- without ever stopping to describe it: imagine the hypnotic appeal of TWILIGHT, better written, taking the form of liquid song.

"Let Them Go" is a transcendently personal song about family, rebirth and parenting, both bitter and sweet, with a fantastical Elfman air that never quite leaves behind its sense of wonder even as it travels from birth to leaving the nest, evoking Jonatha Brook's wry commentary in the way it travels from the nursery to synthesizer beats, bringing new beauty even to the resentments and sometimes burdensome history that we all share.

The sublime banjo and organ of "Way Too Much" underscore its sweeping melodies and unforgettable observations -- "Why would I try to save a miserable thing like snow?" Leslie asks at one point, mourning at another the "prehistoric lessons I thought I could learn from our elders" -- which never fail to circle back around to the possibility of delight. The song is as much a journey around the world as it is a poem given lovely musical form, and one of my favorites.

"First Date" recalls the girl-group fantasies of k.d. lang's Lawrence Welk phase, hiding as it does a real passion and need under pop chords and swirling guitar. This evocative ode to the first breath of love belongs on the soundtrack of that kind of movie which ends in a convertible taking flight, and sailing above the clouds.

"I Only Care About You..." is a buzzing, low-key apology, arms spread wide, sung as much to the disappointed lover as the mirror. Its chorus is as smooth as the self-revealing verses are jagged and frustrated. Its hints of darkness are, characteristically, balanced by the sincerity and eyes-open acceptance of the patterns and the past that keep us stranded.

"Alone Tonight" starts like a great 90s soul ballad, a mode that fits Leslie's smoky, sincere voice beautifully. What could be an epiphanic "tonight I change" promise becomes, under Leslie's confident hand, a reassuring letter received from our better, future selves.

Poetic-but-not-precious "I" finds Leslie's inner imagist spilling her confessional guts; it's only fair that Leslie's sure-handed piano playing takes center stage here. The cascading melody and driving drums, as the words come flooding out -- almost, it seems, of their own accord -- could distract you from the beauty and music of the language itself. One hopes to see Leslie explore the larger structure this song offers, moving forward: as the album's longest and wordiest song, one wonders how she finds the time to not only highlight her voice so strongly, but construct such a compelling pop song. By way of comparison only, I've always considered "Just Missed The Train" to be K. Clarkson's "lost single," and this song is impressive in a similar way: grand in scope and mesmerizing in its unceasing intimacy. There's not a moment to rest, just five minutes of pure pop perfection.

"Down Day" returns Leslie to what some might consider her roots: a bluesy -- both in sound and sentiment -- experiment that recalls the folk experiments of Janis Ian and Laura Nyro. Guitars and strings share equal time over the deep, deep choral structures the song creates around itself. What the pop singer-songwriter movement of late has forgotten is just this sense of soundscape, of fearless and complex instrumentation. A girl and her piano can play just as well with a full orchestra, if the sentiment is strong enough.

The sad glimpse into Anytown we're given with "Lonely Home" is more than tempered by its dramatic jazz-pop arrangement, which highlights Leslie's beautiful voice perhaps more than any other track, by giving it room to breathe.

"Sea I Provide" is the most guitar-driven track, dreamy in its imagery and fierce in its approach to overwhelming emotion. One is both sympathetic and jealous of its "humble sailor," who may well be destroyed by the passion the narrator evokes, even when she's not around.

"Open Your Eyes" is a perfect endpoint: it's a free-for-all! A whirling, exuberant flush in the skin, a call to action, and a flipbook rollercoaster through all the influences and emotional textures the album has brought to the table. Between the images -- hypothermia, fallow fields, the cosmos itself -- and the baroque piano breakdown, this is a shot straight to the brain of Leslie Hunt, and the album as a whole.

WOW, it's been awhile. I thought for sure that my next blog would be a grand gesture of some type, like a handwritten, scanned letter to the faithful LDogs, or a video blog. Both of these things are in my blogging future, as there are many things to fill you in on, and the written language just wouldn't suffice, honestly.

I guess this is just a way for me to NOT be all or nothing with my communication. HELLO! I'm Leslie, and I've been really freaking busy... A little too busy for adequate computer time.

I'm in the studio with a singer/songwriter named Jimmy Dailydis, and we've been working on his 18 track record since October. I'm singing on it, but I'm also producing the vocals, which entails coaching Jimmy throughout the sessions, editing the tracks that we record and arranging the songs. His songs are very beautiful, and the band sounds great. It's an earthy, raw, mellow record, and I can't wait to share it with you!

DISTRICT 97 is also in the studio, and I'm about halfway done with recording my vocals. The record is sounding incredible so far, and I look forward to introducing you to some crazy-ass progressive metal, 'cause it's hot as hell! We packed Martyrs when we played there last month. People are really hip to the D97, let me tell ya. It's been such a great outlet for my ridiculous amounts of performing energy. My voice has gotten crazy strong since I joined the band, too. Let's here it for a band with benefits! Ok... Weird.

Oh, and let me just tell you that The Rikters asked me to appear on THEIR full-length record, so I'm going into the studio with them on Sunday. They are the ultimate power trio, the songs are freaking awesome, they are incredible musicians, and they are my best friends. I couldn't be happier to be making a guest appearance! Check them out in my top friends, yo.

Let's see, what else... My dog is really cute and fluffy, my couch is bright orange, and my record isn't going to be available in April like I thought. When the artwork is done, I'm going to spend some time getting it reviewed, 'cause most respectable music critics won't review a record that is out already.

"Look, mom! I learned something about the music industry!"

More news to come... Stay tuned for that video blog! You'll want to be sitting down for that one!

XOXO all OVER the damn place,

-Leslie

P.S. I'll be 27 on Monday. I soooo prefer odd numbers, don't you?

So, many of you got my email regarding some shows coming up this week, as well as the radio and TV appearances I had planned for early this morning. (If you didn't, climb aboard the mailing list express!) As luck would have it, I was unable to participate, due to some severe joint pain that had flared up the night before. My apologies to those of you that were watching TV in hopes to catch my sleepy-ass Christmas Caroling with The Ides Of March. It would've been amazing, if not for this damn Lupus of mine.

When I woke up this morning, joints feeling much better, I realized that I never mentioned I was interviewed by a great woman named Christine Miserandino for the online magazine ButYouDontLookSick.com. She conducted one of the best interviews I've had the pleasure of experiencing, as it incorporated both my health AND my music.

ButYouDontLookSick.com magazine is about living life to the fullest with any disability, invisible disease, or chronic pain and features a collection of articles, personal stories, book and product reviews, health resources and an active message board for the disabled, or those living with chronic pain or illness.

Click here to read the article!

Hope to see you out and about this week! St. Charles, anyone?! Eh?!

(I do not know the first thing about sports.)

There is much to share! So many experiences to reflect on! Where on earth does a girl begin?!

First of all, I'm shooting my first music video tomorrow. Um, yeah. CRAZY! I'm finally putting a lifetime of lip-syncing in front of the mirror, brush in hand, to good use. There will also be a "behind the scenes" camera there, so bet your bottom dollar that I'll say or do SOMETHING adorable before the day is through. (I'm kidding!)

I have a lot of solo/duo shows coming up, heavy on the intimacy factor, and I can't wait to tap into that level of emotion again. Rob Clearfield, the insanely talented multi-instrumentalist, is going to be playing with me at Uncommon Ground (on Devon) Nov. 9. Come check it out, 'cause that venue is one of my favorites. Amazing food, intimate atmosphere, great wine selection, perfect sound quality and volume... And I'll hug you if you show up. Not desperate... Just affectionate.

(Cue the strings...)

On a personal level, I finally feel like I'm not in crazy mourning mode anymore. Literally, just the other day, I woke up and felt this wave of acceptance, and have been riding that wave ever since. I'm sure it's going to rear it's sad, ugly head every now and then, but on the whole, I'm grateful for the many ways in which I have been blessed.

(Fade out strings...)

Well, that's all. My blog looks cooler now, so I might be inspired to put more cool blogs in my cool looking blog.

Stay tuned! Don't forget to vote!

Okay, so the subject is a tad grandiose.

Guys!!! The record is DONE DOOBIE DO DONE DONE!!!
(come-a, come-a...)

It is scheduled to be released and readily available in October.

As my page reflects, I have sustained a massive loss in my already small immediate family. My sister died for unknown reasons on June 19, one day before I was supposed to be married. Yeah, I know... It's pretty much unheard of. The release of this record, and all of the hard work that it will require to get it off the ground, has proven to be a fabulous distraction.

The band has a couple shows coming up -

August 30, we're opening up for the Ides of March, which should be a rocking good time. It's a festival, which is a double bonus.

September 12, we're playing at Goose Island in Wrigleyville. The other bands rock : The Employees and Santa.

That's all for now.
Enjoy the new tunes!

So, this show was May 14 @ the Beat Kitchen in Chicago, and the show featured some other Chicago chicks trying to do their thang... This song is called "All The Way", and it's another sneak-peak of the record that's coming out JULY 1ST!!!!!!!!!

Joel is in Spain for a bit, so Dave Hiltebrand is playing the bass (AMAZINGLY) on this show. Oh, and check out Neal's crazy guitar action!! I was like, "Neal, go ahead and freak out on this song." and he's like, "OK". Vance really brought it home on this one, too. You can hear his manly-man voice counting off at the beginning.

I have tons of shows coming up, but the most important one to make it out for is Saturday, June 7th @ Goose Island. I'm trying to work with this crazy hooked-up booking guy, and if I don't draw at least 35 people on a Saturday, he's like, "Good-bye forever." Oh, the pressure!!! I'll give you each a dollar. (My dad's a free-jazz drummer, and he plays every Tuesday, so to encourage people to come out, they actually pay their audience little sums of money each week. It's honestly brilliant.)

Okay! I'm crazy busy and AMPED about how cool things are getting for me!

Hugs,
Leslie

Hello!

I’m alive and well, I swear! I’ve been super bad about updating lately, but that’s not to say that I haven’t been busy as hell. There are many, MANY exciting things on the forefront of my musical dreams and aspirations.

My publicist (Denise Dorman) and entertainment lawyer (Linda Mensch) are making my head spin with opportunities and career advice. I don’t want to seem like a whirlwind of empty promises, so I won’t share any specifics at this time, but just know that I have a team of forward-thinking, wildly motivated and connected women in my life, and together, we’re getting all of my proverbial ducks in a row.

I regret having made any semi-official record release dates in the past, ’cause no matter what I say now, you’re all going to be like "Yeah, right. Liar." But the fact of the matter is, this is taking longer than any of us would’ve ever imagined, and that’s ’cause we’re ready for this to be a world-class debut. If I had a label backing me and making time constraints, there’s no way we would’ve been this behind, but then again, things are coming together at such a great pace that I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. I appreciate your patience and support more than you know, and I hope to be coming to all of your towns when I finally have a real PRODUCT!!!

We’re shooting for July 1st.

There are a couple things that totally rule. The first is that I’m singing The National Anthem at a Cubs game on the evening April 29th. Hopefully it’ll be on national television! I’ll wink at you guys, and we can have a little moment.

The second thing that rules is that I’M GETTING MARRIED IN ALMOST TEN WEEKS!!! Surprisingly enough, it isn’t that hard OR stressful to plan a wedding. Chris (fiance) is really involved in the details, and we’re just having a blast with it. We’re hoping to get some media coverage, but we’ll see. I could be on Bridezilla or something! Ha ha ha...

Ok, that about covers it. :-)

Love and appreciation for the endless support that I’m constantly getting from you fabulous folk,

xoxo

Well, hello there!

I played a show at Martyr's on Saturday night, and even though my star players weren't there (Neal and Vance) the show went really well! I decided to ask this fantastic keyboardist named Dave Holloway, and Javier Saume from my old group, Mark Twang, to join me for a different kind of show. The first half was acoustic, meaning that Joel played upright bass, and Javier played the cahon. It was great to experience my music with that instrumentation, and I will definitely be "changing the ensemble" again, as it totally ups the "cool" factor for both the performers and the audience! Also, I was able to employ some of the subtle counter-parts that Christian and I had been writing for this record, thanks to Dave's incredible knack for remember melodies on the spot.

Speaking of Christian, we went down to Nashville together, and stayed at Rick's house, working feverishly on my record. I think it's a good sign that my producer and co-producer are two of my favorite people in the world, and I didn't grow tired of them at all, spending every second together, eating every meal... Yeah, I can't say the same for many people, and I think our being "on the level" with each other will TOTALLY translate on this record. They can mess with knobs, dials and sliders until my words turn into the music in my mind. How cool is that? Seriously, this is the most amazing, relevant, CRUCIAL thing I've ever done in all of my twenty-five years on earth.

So far, we've taking our hard drives to five different homes/studios, and I have some HEAVY musicians on this record:

Vinnie Colaiuda (drums) has played with Frank Zappa, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Jill Scott, Faith Hill, Dean Martin, Michael Buble, Chick Corea, Jeff Beck...

David Sancious (piano) has played with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Seal, Natalie Merchant, Santana, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen...

Vail Johnson (bass) has played with Herbie Hancock, Paula Abdul (ha!), Stevie Nicks, Kenny G, Michael Bolton, Peabo Bryson, George Benson...

Danny Parks (guitar) has played with a ton of country folks that I'm sure I would've heard of, if I ever listened to country... He is really throwing down the rock and the textural craziness, and I couldn't not have been more impressed with him.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

More love than a Hallmark on Valentine's Day,
Leslie
