Presented by the Irma Thomas Center for W.I.S.E. (Women In Search of Excellence) Women at Delgado Community College and the New Orleans Craft Mafia, Handmade Nation - a new film by Faythe Levine which documents the rise of DIY and the new wave of art, craft and design - will have its New Orleans premiere Friday, September 18th, 2009 at 7pm.

Starting in 2006, Levine traveled to 15 cities, logged over 19,000 miles and interviewed more than 80 individuals who are part of a tightly knit crafting community which exists both online through websites, blogs and online stores as well as within local communities around the world in the form of craft fairs, independent boutiques, modern day knitting circles and networking groups like the Craft Mafia.. These individuals merge traditional handcrafting techniques with a modern DIY (do it yourself) ethos, combining historical crafting techniques and artisan skills with 21st century aesthetics, punk, politics, feminism and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, the film explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination, and networking.

Director Faythe Levine will be in attendance. A marketplace featuring local artists and crafters - including members of New Orleans’ very own Craft Mafia, will accompany the screening, from 6-9pm. A question and answer session with Levine will follow the film.

This screening is free and open to the public thanks to the generosity of the Irma Thomas Center for W.I.S.E. (Women In Search of Excellence) Women at Delgado Community College. It will take place in the Lac Maurepas room on the second floor of the Delgado Student Life Center (on the back part of Delgado’s City Park campus, off Navarre Avenue). Ample free parking will also be available in the nearby parking lot off Navarre Avenue by the former WYES TV studio.

A free daytime screening of the film for students will also take place at 2pm on Thursday, September 17th in the same location.
For more information about the film, visit: http://www.handmadenationmovie.com.

NOCM Welcomes Sweet Olive Soap Works!

The New Orleans Craft Mafia is very proud to welcome our newest member: Emily Manger Davis of Sweet Olive Soap Works!

Emily grew up here in New Orleans where her grandmother taught her the art of cold process soap making. Emily grows all sorts of wonderful organic herbs, fruits and vegetables in her back yard that she uses in her soaps along with other locally grown produce such as Ponchatoula Strawberries and Pointe Coupee Pecans.

If you came to our birthday party last month at Twisted Hair Salon you may have found some of her deliciously scented soaps at MissMalaprop's booth. We're proud to welcome Emily as our newest member and we hope you'll check out her wonderful soaps online in her Etsy shop and later this month at the JAJO Expo.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13:
St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Calling all lonely souls, disgruntled lovers and bleeding hearts! Come join the New Orleans Craft Mafia at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre art market. We'll be at the Bridge Lounge (1201 Magazine St, NOLA 70130) on Friday, February 13th from 5-9pm

Whether you're shopping for a gift for your beloved or you feel the need to soothe your own sad spirit, we've got the goods for you.

We'll have gifts for both men and women including recycled necktie wallets, various and varied jewelry, and funky home décor. A little retail therapy is always good for the broken-hearted; put down the ice cream and come get your bloody valentine.

It's the first night of Mardi Gras parades, but it's just off of the parade route and this event is during Happy Hour, so it's the perfect time to drop by!

ANTIGRAVITY MAGAZINE'S
Alternative Media Expo

The New Orleans Craft Mafia is proud to once again sponsor the Alternative Media Expo, presented by Antigravity Magazine. This will be the seventh edition of the Expo, and as always, this year's event will feature over 100 exhibitors with 'zines, comics, films, crafts, photography and handmade clothing, independent record labels and artists with CDs and records, indie and grassroots organizations, filmmakers and much more!

The Expo will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2009, from noon - 6pm at the warehouse at the Contemporary Arts Center (900 Camp Street) in New Orleans, LA. The admission fee for this all-ages event will be $5. Mark your calenders now, so you don't forget to attend NOLA's biggest alternative event of the year!

The first 150 paid attendees through the doors will receive swag bags courtesy of the New Orleans Craft Mafia: a cotton tote bag filled with freebies and product samples from various indie businesses. These bags present a great opportunity to get the word out about your business, band, or organization. Vendors exhibiting at the Expo are also encouraged to participate in the swag bags.

Some swag suggestions include, but are not limited to: coupons, stickers, buttons, magnets, pens, etc. We ask that you do send actual swag items and not just promotional materials such as business cards or flyers. You may attach business cards, etc., to any donated swag, of course. If you are interested in sending in swag material, we ask that you send in the full amount of 150 items.

We will also be accepting product samples, which may include, but are not limited to: CD/DVD samplers, comics and zines, small jewelry or accessory samples, t-shirts, blank notecards or stationery, or other small samples of your products. If you choose to send in samples, we ask that you send a minimum of 25 samples.

The deadline for sending in swag & samples is Friday, March 6, 2009. Items may be sent to:

New Orleans Craft Mafia swag bags
c/o Kerry Fitts
P.O. Box 791922
New Orleans, Louisiana 70179-1922

Those interested in dropping off samples and swag locally may bring them by Winky's (2038 Magazine Street) during regular business hours. Please make sure your items are marked as being for the New Orleans Craft Mafia / Alternative Media expo swag bags.

For more information on contributing to the swag bags, please email mallory@neworleanscraftmafia.com

Krewe do Craft

It’s Mardi Gras time, and that means it’s time again for the Krewe ‘do’ Craft to march. They will once again be marching down (part) of St. Charles Avenue on Sunday, February 22 at 2pm with Box of Wine Parade.

Krewe de Craft prides itself on creating handmade costumes and handmade throws. This year’s theme is Alice in Craftyland. All Artists, Crafters and lovers of Art & Craft are invited to join this Krewe of Artists and Crafters in marching and celebrating Mardi Gras 2009. The Krewe needs Alice’s, White Rabbits, cards, Cheshire cats, Queens...and the king. Or be creative and create a less well known character. They also need your handmade throws, but understand using recycled beads as filler. Some should have something to do with Alice in Craftyland...teacups, cards, rabbits (none live please).

Please contact the White Rabbit, Phil Whitmore of Inexplicable Confetti at inexplicableconfetti@gmail.com for details or stop by his booth at the Freret Market or Arts Market of New Orleans at Palmer Park.

New Orleans Craft Mafia

May was an exciting month for the New Orleans Craft Mafia... we made the front cover of The Gambit Weekly!

A big welcome goes out to all our new subscribers who first heard about us through the Gambit article!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

June marks the 3rd birthday of the New Orleans Craft Mafia!  Our humble group got its start three years ago this month, back in June 2005, only a few months before Hurricane Katrina changed everything.  Our original launch party plans got squashed by the storm (we were planning a big bash for September 22, 2005), but we made it through and now we're stronger than ever!

To celebrate our birthday, we're extending a birthday gift to our loyal readers & fans!  Any webshop orders made during our third anniversary month of June 2008 totaling $25 or more will receive a FREE NOCM tote bag while supplies last!

NEW MEMBER:
INEXPLICABLE CONFETTI

We're very proud to introduce our newest member: Inexplicable Confetti

Artist Phillip Whitmore creates original t-shirt designs and hand silk-screens each one himself!  He has a BFA degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and is also is a public school art teacher.

Join us for the DIY event of the season later this month!  On the evening of Friday, June 27th artists and craft lovers alike from all over New Orleans will converge at the REPUBLIC (828 S. Peters Street) for the second edition of the Worn Again New Orleans fashion show.  Worn Again is a fundraiser for Recycle for the Arts and this year's event will feature a Worn Again Jr. competition (complete with sewing classes for ages 8-15) and Recycled Dance competition in addition to the main fashion show and Thrift Store Art Edit.

Kelly Claverie of Claverie Crafts and her mom Judy, who is a costume designer for the local theatre community, will be teaching the sewing demos on the Saturdays leading up to Worn Again Jr. at The Green Project.

Z'OTZ NIGHT MARKET

Long time New Orleans residents may remember the old night markets that used to happen regularly at Z'otz coffee shop, located uptown (8210 Oak Street).  Well, this summer the night market returns, courtesy of the NOCM!  We hope you'll join us on Saturday, June 21 from 7pm - til for a special summer solstice edition of this relaxed evening market.

Z'otz is now also playing host to a regular Stitch & Bitch night.  Drop by on Tuesdays from 7-10pm to get your knitting and stitching on!  During the first two weeks of June they'll be offering 1 dollar off any drink for participants who come with something to stitch with.

Keep an eye out later this month for the New Orleans edition of the DIY City Mag.  Every few months this online magazine spotlights independent artists, crafters and hot spots from around a different city, and this time New Orleans is featured.  There will be numerous pieces by and about the New Orleans Craft Mafia in this issue, so be sure to check it out!

There's also some new stuff to check out in our group webshop this month, plus Tressa of Flambeaux Design Company has some adorable new polymer bird pins in her Etsy shop for only $10:

Member Mags of art by mags! has also been having some great success and gaining national press with her Barack Obama prints, which are now featured on bicycle spoke cards and available for only $1 a card at obamaspoke.com.  There's more info about what Mags has been up to, including her impending return to New Orleans (yay!) in her blog.

JUST RUBBISH

Heather and Mark of Unique Products are featured in a new how-to book about recycled crafts called Rubbish!: Reuse Your Refuse.  They show you how to make one of their recycled blue tarp check book covers.

This summer, Heather will also be acting as visual arts teacher for summer camps at Country Day Academy and the Contemporary Arts Center.  Some of her art project plans for these classes involve teaching the kids how to knit using giant 6 foot knitting needles.  Sounds exciting!

ART IN BLOOM

Heather Macfarlane of UP/ Unique Products was picked to be one of the artists in the twentieth annual Art in Bloom at The New Orleans Museum of Art. This wonderful weekend of floral exhibits ran from April 2nd through April 6th, and featured interpretations by artists, florists and garden clubs of the museum’s paintings into flower arrangements ranging from the traditional to the bizarre! Check out Heather’s arrangement inspired by the wonderful Judy Cooper photo of the Popular Ladies Social Club.

ART BY MAGS! IS COMING HOME

Yes, you read that right. art by mags! will finally be returning full-time to New Orleans this July, after almost three years of living in Louisville, KY post-Katrina. All of us are so excited about this news, and no one more than Mags herself. You can read more about the impending move via her blog or come by the Crescent City Craft Market this Sunday, April 13 to say hi to her in person!

In the mean time, Mags is busy crafting up a storm in order to raise the funds necessary to finance the big move. Two of her latest products are a limited run of one-of-a-kind t-shirts featuring her "Rise Up New Orleans" stencil design, as well as her new Barack Obama spray paint stencil prints. Both designs are available in her Etsy shop.
