You are said to be a band that really connects with your fans. What inspires that relationship between Modena and their following?

We’re no different than the people that come to our shows. Being music lovers ourselves, we feel a kinship with anyone that goes to a concert. And without our fans, we’re nothing.

How do you maintain that connection?

Staying true to the music by giving 150% at both the live shows and in the studio. In addition, our mutual love for good music and the fact that each fan, and what they think of our music, is genuinely important to each and every member of the band.

What about the music scene most annoys you?

The monotony of every trendy band and their unwillingness to be unique.

Jaymz: “It’s my biggest fear that the modern rock genre will conform to a certain formula of songwriting to the point that it will wear itself out, like the ‘80s scene did.”

Justin: “Adhering to the trend of what’s popular should NOT take precedence over the songwriting. It’s time for a rock revolution!” Basically, you can’t sound like another popular band and expect to have the same result in the long-run.

Share with us your favorite show/tour stories:
Justin: I fell off the stage in Raleigh and busted my eye open right before we went on, and played the show with a swollen eye.

Stewy: When I blew chunks in my sleep all over the bed at the hotel in South Carolina and I didn’t even realize it until I woke up the following morning. Needless to say, Justin fled the room.

Jaymz: The time we performed with a local rapper friend of ours in Chapel Hill, NC. It was great to cross genre’s and do something different.

Derek: Going to Waffle House after every show. Mmm….food.

Hey everyone...

Ok, so I pretty much never blog...ever. But I have to spit out a paragraph or two for this period in this pothole infested road that is my life. If you know me at all, or just a bit more than a little. Then you know I have been pretty sick the past year, well more than a little. But im not one to complain. Anyway, its just recently all come to a head which the surgeons at UNC memorial hospital have so graciously popped.
Ill just give you guys the short version that led up to this( for those of you who dont know). I had a disease which caused my intestines to have numerous holes in the lining. Holes are bad because it limits what I may take in and digest. Pretty much no stuff of substance..for example the only vegetables I could eat was green beans and potatoes. If im hardheaded and decide to eat what im not supposed to. The holes could collect debree causing absesses that can lead to infection, which could if untreated, burst and kill me.
It just so happens I had two absesses. Due to the fact that I wasnt told about the dietary restrictions until after I fell ill with infection. Then there were complications, and the doctors (Duke at the time) opened a hole in my abdomen down to my intestines to free the infection. Then on the day of the surgery to reverse my condition and this "hole", they called and told me due to my pending insurance they werent operating because it "just wasnt important enough". I was left with a hole in my stomach and forced to stay that way for eight months.
It was sheer torture that I was forced to endure in silence. Most people would have never known that I was walking around with a hole in my stomach. You may ask. Why not just let it heal? The answer. I couldnt because the doctors told me to make sure it never closed. Because if it did close, it would drain fluid under my skin making me sick and pottentialy kill me. So I had to keep it open by doing things that I wont go into detail explaining...but it sucked. I just tried to live my life normally, even though I felt like a gross freak. I stepped onstage and played my heart out every show though. It kept me sane and somehow dulled all pain I had for those 45 minutes. It was hard to stay strong, even harder to walk around pretending I was actually a normal person. But the waiting paid off.
I switched to UNC. Within two weeks my surgery was scheduled. And what had kept me in the company of my constant companion that was pain, would now be dealt with.
The surgery was what you would call brutal. My condition had progressed so much(because of Dukes apathetic approach to medicine.), that the diseased part of the intestines had concreted itself not only in me, but to my bladder. They actually done three surgeries in one. One to fix the old wound, one to take out the diseased part of the intestines, and one to cut my bladder because that intestines wouldnt come out. The surgeons told me afterward that he began to worry if it would even come out. He said he actually abandoned the "light surgeons touch" and had to use "brute force" to remove it.
I know now that im lucky to be alive. I smile everyday now because I get to wake up one more time knowing that I almost wasnt here. I gave you guys the short version. I left out the numerous embarassing tests, other countless complications, even my kidneys shutting down and almsot killing me. I couldve said so much more. I want to be mad that ive had to face my mortality so young, but I cant because im still here. They say that everyone goes through something for a reason. I however have yet to see the reason for all of this....but thats ok. I can live with that. Infact im just happy I can live.
Well, im at home now sitting in a recliner typing this blog. The nurses have forced me to stay home to recover, it could be weeks. I have some pretty terrible wounds. Which will surely make awesome scars. Haha. But I will be up and about soon. To take the stage again and reclaim my sanity. I miss music like a long lost brother, and cant wait to be back at it again. It wont be long now, til im back out trying to conquer the world with my brothers in Modena....
In closing of this incredibally longwinded blog. I say... that I love you is a strong phrase. But to all the friends, family, and fans (whom I also call friends) who supported me through this shithole of a time that I have had, I say I love you guys. You gave me more strength than you know. You guys have been my heartbeat in these toughest of times. From the phone calls, the hospital visits, to the numerous emails. Thank you. I will never forget the support you have shown. So yes, you will soon see and hear more of me. Get ready guys...HERE I COME!

                             Thanks again Guys,

much much love and appreciation (however sappy it may be)

We have some great and exciting news!! As you may know, our bassist STEWY was diagnosed with a condition known as diverticulitis and had to undergo recent surgery. I'm glad to report that he is now out of the hospital and his surgery was a SUCCESS!! He is now at home recovering for the next couple of weeks to about a month. Does this mean MODENA is on a hiatus?? NO! of course not. During this time we're going to be writing new music and planning out how Modena will take over the world! We're working on some big things right now, so bear with us! We'll be hitting the road again mid-late summer/early fall.

If you'd like to contact Stewy and give him your best wishes, you can email him at: fluffybassist@aim.com

I'm sure he'd love to hear from all of you! In the meantime, if you haven't joined our Street Team, be sure to do so!! You can earn a bunch of Modena prizes by doing each one of the missions listed on the website. Here's the address for the website: http://modenastreetteam.com

Anyways, it's time for me to peace out. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to email me! We love hearing feedback from the fans.

ROCK ON!!

Yes, that's right folks. Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. You might have noticed we've added some acoustic gigs in Chapel Hill. We're trying to raise money for our upcoming EP, and what better way to do it by gigging??

We'll be playing at a bunch of different bars and small clubs in and around the Chapel Hill and Raleigh area in the next couple of months. The acoustic act is slightly different than the full Modena lineup. It includes Justin on vocals/guitar/piano, Jaymz on vocals/guitar, and our good friend Robbie Dimauro helping us out on drums.

And in case you're wondering, don't worry, Modena is still in the full swing of things. We'll be booking ALOT more shows with the full band lineup once our EP is completed and ready for release.

P.S. If you are a band and would like to play with either Modena or the acoustic act PLEASE send us a message via myspace and we will set something up.

We hope to see you guys out there!!! Rock on...

~Jaymz

Hey guys, this is our new song. It was debuted last Saturday at Volume 11 to a great response!

Let us know what you think.......=)

Hang It High

12 years of good luck
The bad lines never crossed
The streets remained unbroken,
But they stayed within the walls

Take this feeling, and
hang it high
You won't get inside my head this time

The times when something changes,
You're always in my ear
You talk the hateful overkill
That I don't need to hear

Take this feeling, and
hang it high
You won't get inside my head this time
The faces you put up have
Turned out lies, so I'll
Take this feeling and
Hang it high

Those 3 letters don't mean a thing

Take this feeling, and
hang it high
You won't get inside my head this time
The faces you put up have
Turned out lies, so I'll
Take this feeling and
Hang it high

Still Life

Back of the line old friend
Reminice to way back when
Time is a fire in which we used to burn
Keep in mind to confess
Here it lies, laid to rest
Still life remains a mystery dissolved

Familiarize
Idolize
Realize
This canvas is left undone

Gettin' tried felony
Administer some kind of remedy
To help we call out his full name
Don't ya know?
In an age of innocence
Guilt tries to make some sense
Still life retains its place on top of the world
