MSTU's singer and songwriter Nat has been busy. She's assembled her new backing band 'The Figureheads', signed to Damaged Goods and recorded an album, 'Roman Radio', to be released on 19th October. Before that, there's a double a-side single out on the 5th October - 'Wonderful Emergency' and a cover of the Beach Boys' 'Don't Worry Baby'.

Nat Johnson and the Figureheads will be touring in October from as high up as Newcastle to as low down as London - have a mosey over to their myspace page for more details: http://www.myspace.com/natjohnsonband

In the meantime, the album is now available to pre-order from Damaged Goods:

Nat Johnson Debut Single "Dirty Rotten Soul"

Nat Johnson, formerly singer/songwriter of Monkey Swallows The Universe released her debut single "Dirty Rotten Soul" on a limited edition four-song CD and digital download  TODAY!

"Dirty Rotten Soul" is an energetic acoustic romp, showcasing Nat's sensuous vocals and sharp lyrics! It is backed with a delicious cover of "Mexico" by Cake and the limited edition cd features two bonus tracks.

Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe have given the single plays on both BBC Radio2 and 6Music and it's received great reviews:

 "Nice and Dirty!" Richard Hawley

"Window casing two sides of her considerable talents, she delivers galloping country and delicate folk with aplomb, both displaying her lovely rounded vocals and ear for a melody." Sounds XP

"Nat Johnson has re-emerged as an alt-country songstress crafting delicate songs with hard talking lyrics." Sheffield Telegraph

"Once heard, the whipsmart chorus won't be forgotten." Teletext

"Johnson has carved out a deliciously brisk echo to a past long since forgotten and lost." Losing Today

"One part folk and one part the jangle of The Smiths with the sweet, fragile, alluring voice of Nat." Rough Trade

"Driving rockabilly with a haunting, almost Parisian quality." Subba-Culcha

"Whereas MSTU went for the folkier end of the indie pop spectrum Dirty Rotten Soul is a rockier country affair that needs to be washed down with a whiskey or two." Indie-mp3

"I have to say the lead track does it for me.... I can't get the f*cker out of my head!" Norman Records

Current mood:  grateful

We have come to the decision to put Monkey Swallows the Universe on indefinite hiatus after we have finished our current run of gigs. What does this mean in practice? The answer is we don't know yet. We could be away for months, years, or it could be forever. We can't thank you enough for your support over the past few years. We wouldn't have got this far without you.

Bearing that in mind, you will probably have already realised that your last opportunity to see us live (for a while, at least) will be quickly approaching. In December, we're playing at The Band Room in Farndale on the 15th, and Fuzz Club in Sheffield on the 20th. We've got two gigs in January. The first is in Bush Hall in London on Friday January 11th. We anticipate this is going to be a big one, so we advise you to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. A week after, we're playing our last gig in Sheffield at The Boardwalk. The same applies for this one, and tickets are available from Jack's Records. Finally, in February, we've got a run of three gigs in Scotland - our first visit north of the border.

Our record label, Loose Music, is having a Christmas Sale. This means you can pick up The Casket Letters at the bargainous price of £6 if you haven't got it already, or if you know someone that might be happy to find it in their stocking :)  Loose Shop

In other news, you may be interested to know that Nat has embarked on a solo project, and has just played her first solo gig, with a few more in the pipeline. Find out more about this new venture here: www.myspace.com/judybeat

Make sure you have a great Christmas, and we hope to see some of you at the last few gigs.
