We at the Reno Music Project would like to extend a big thank you to Julian Rhodes (and photos by Scott Barnett) for visiting our open mic last Friday and then making us famous in the Nevada Sagebrush.  Hopefully we'll see some new college faces at open mic as a result!

Hey hey, it's time once again to share your opinion and vote in the Reno News & Review's "Best Of" poll!

http://www.newsreview.com/reno/ballot/BestofReno08

As with all popularity contests, these awards don't mean all that much.  HOWEVER, it would be GREAT publicity for our little project if you'd vote for us, and we could really use the publicity!

As you know we're not doing the Pig Rock Caves big jam extravaganza this year.  After chatting with those of you who responded to my last camping-related message, we've decided to do a simple, back to the basics, overnight campout on September 20th.  No power, no lights, no amps, no B.S.  Just acoustic instruments (anything that makes noise under its own power is welcome) around a campfire with musical friends under the stars, like it was in the beginning.

Email me if you're interested in the details & location.

If you don't know what PIG ROCK is, then ignore this message.

For those that do, here's a response msg to many of the questions I've received in recent days, re: "are you doing Pig Rock this year?"

The short answer is, "After 7 Pig Rock music events of increasingly stressful, panic attack-inducing effort, I hadn't planned on doing it again this year.  Plus, I've gone through some pretty nasty drama in the past several months that has kind of sucked the will out of me for large-scale events.  Ask if you're really interested in a long list of details."

HOWEVER...

Several die-hard, long time fans of the jam have been asking me, neé, begging me to put together a campout/jam for this year.  So, I'm once again considering it.  But, if we do it, I'd like to strip it back down to the basics and do what we did in the beginning.  That is, do a simple overnighter (instead of 2-4 days), with NO power, NO lights, NO PA system.  Maybe bathrooms if we can talk someone into hauling the Sani-Hut trailer again.  :)    And, I'd really like to get it back to the music, instead of the large-scale general purpose campout/bacchanalia it grew into over the past couple years.  Just musicians with their family or closest friends.  No separate campsites with canned music, firearms, ATV's, etc.  :)

Musicians playing acoustic music under the stars in the desert until we pass out (or the sun comes up) ... just like when we started it several years ago.

If you're interested, let me know.

Peace

Open mic has sure been all kinds of fun lately!  Tonight about 3/4 of Burning Peace will be on hand to warm up for our anniversary show next week, and I’ve gotten emails from some outstanding performers who say they’ll be on deck tonight.  Should be fun!  And hey, a big thank you to Randal Jacoby for donating a couple more couches to our music living room.  Comfy!  Now for some kudos and comments on recent shows.

First off, I’d like to say a belated THANK YOU to everyone who made my birthday party so much fun.  What an amazing night of music!  Second, I’d like to thank Cindy Gray and everyone who came out to last Saturday’s folk & bluegrass night ... HUGE turnout!!!  For me, there’s nothing better than a room filled with folks who came to enjoy some real music played by real people.  I really, really enjoyed the show, but of course, I’m one of those freaks who likes a whole lot of different music.  Speaking of which...

...this Saturday’s showcase is the 3rd anniversary of local metal band Sinicle (with their hard rock friends Authmentis filling out the bill).  Now, I just turned 40, and the music called "metal" these days isn’t much like what we called metal back in my day.  But I have to say, after seeing these kids perform a couple times, I’m starting to become a fan!  Sure, I have to wear -30dB earplugs in order to enjoy the show (I AM an old man, after all), but the amount of energy and talent these guys put into their shows, well, it’s infectious.  And hey, this will be your last chance to see them play in Reno for a while, because they’re about to head off for higher education, etc.  So, if you like it fast and loud, Saturday’s a night not to miss.

One sad note to report.  Some of you may have heard that our friend EJ Maldonado lost his father to illness earlier this month.  We of the RMP would like to extend our condolences to EJ and his family.  Peace.

A quick THANK YOU to Jo & Kurt for providing and installing our new stage backdrop (curtains) ... very nice work, guys!  Every little bit of volunteer effort makes our space at Maytan's that much cozier.  Can't say enough nice things about all the folks who are helping make the Reno Music Project a reality.

For complete, detailed info on booking shows, visit our website:

http://www.renomusicproject.com/booking.shtml

Since most folks don't like to do all that readin' and such, here's the basic info on booking Reno Music Project shows at Maytan Music Center:

  • All shows at Maytan Music Center are ALL-AGES with youth strongly encouraged to participate. Alcohol is not served and tobacco is not permitted in the building.
  •
  • Performers are provided with  pro sound, backline support, and a listening room with enough seating space for 150+. Band members get in free, but there is no paid compensation for performers. The small door fee charged covers the cost of producing the shows, including refreshments (soft drinks, coffee, bottled water, etc.).
  • Our performance space is what's known as a listening room environment. It's not a bar, restaurant, coffeehouse, nightclub, dance hall, etc.--it's a lot more like a having a house concert with a REALLY BIG living room! This means we have a great space for performing and appreciating live music, however, without an attached "hospitality business" there is no draw other than the show itself. Playing to an empty room is no fun, so it's extremely important that bands do everything they can to promote their show.
  • As much as we'd like to book everyone who asks, it doesn't make sense to set up a show and then have the audience consist of the soundman and the bands' significant others. Hence, our booking criteria starts with, "can the band draw at least 20 people?" We'd love to book every out-of-town act, but it's not worthwhile unless you can pair up with a local band and draw some listeners. Plus, being an unpaid venue, it often makes more sense for travelling acts to find a paying gig at a bar. Hopefully someday we'll draw enough "regulars" each week to warrant booking all the great acts who want to add Reno to their calendar.
  • Showcases are currently being booked on an ad-hoc basis, typically on Saturday nights featuring 1-2 acts. If you like the idea of performing your original material in a listening room without distractions, and you're confident you can draw at least 20 people, email or call Todd South for booking questions.

The Reno Music Project is a cooperative music effort, focused on
promoting independent, original music within our community. WE NEED
YOUR HELP to make this work! We've got a great place to put on shows
and tons of talent lined up ... now we need to get the word out! If
you're like to be part of our "street team" and help promote Reno Music
Project events, send us a note and let us know!

We're also seeking donated items to help make our new home at Maytan
Music Center more "comfy & homey" for open mic and showcases.
Specifically, we're looking for 2nd hand armchairs, love seats, etc.,
end tables, coffee tables, and all those kinds of things that turn a
big room into a comfortable music listening environment. If you've got
something to donate, let us know and we'll pick it up!

We can't do this without your support ... THANK YOU!
