Category: Parties and Nightlife
Six years ago, around the end of July, toxicrush loaded up the back of the Ranger and cruised down Davidson St.. That particular Friday evening it was the duo show of Ern and Justin, playing under the band name of...the missing yard gnomes, I believe it was. The venue; a now defunct art gallery/bar...the name escapes me. It was something hot outside, the truck backed up and in came the equipment. After they set up their gear, the boys made their way up to the bar, and began to cash in on their payment, PBR in a can. There was a somewhat steady stream of folks out on the street, it was only 8 pm or so, but it seemed as though this was going to be the heaviest flow of traffic, so they juiced the amps and went straight into "pretty moth." They went through their entire set, lasting about 45 straight minutes of sound. They played a great set, they rocked. Their music did not go unoticed and they aquired a small audience...who happened to be on the outside, looking in through the gallery windows as they played. You see, this particular venue was designed as two seperate rooms, an open gallery space and a connecting room, the bar. Shortly into their first set, the proprieter...perhaps disgruntled, closed the gallery door to the street and also closed the door to the bar...isolating the band completely. So as people accumulated outside, none of them knew that they were actually allowed to enter. It was quite the "aww shucks" music videoesque scene. Now you see, around 9 pm, the first set was finished, so after a slight break, they went into their set for a second go around. The second set went by...slightly less enthusiastically, a little more amused at the situation. By now, it was nearly 10 pm, just as the pair were about to pack it in, a flood of people began to take to the street and focusing on us from the outside...and this time, people began to come in to find out about them. Apparently, across the street at the Neighborhood Theatre, there was a show that just let out, providing them with a potential audience of adrenaline fused drunkards. However, after pounding the drums for 2 hours straight, Ern's arm strength was beginning to waver. They played "picture perfect afternoon" for those in the room and they asked for another song. As they launched into "pretty moth" for the 3rd time, Ern's drum stick goes flying across the room and thus concluded that night's toxicrush performance.
