........................ 'No one has greater Love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends’(J.15;13). Those who have Love, cannot close in on themselves. Love wants to love, wants to share and. when Love shares, it sets no limits. This is the intrinsiclaw of Love, which Jesus showed us by his living for others and giving himself fullyto them. Those who are in Love know that sharing material and spiritual goods, sharing time and interest, and even sharing knowledge and visions is not enoughto Love fully. There is no limit to Love. We can never Love enough, even if onelays down one's whole life for one's friends it may not be enough, but it is allwe can do. But the ultimate choice is always ours; we can choose Love and live,or choose no Love and die. Those who Love, live and let the other live at anyprice, even at the price of their own lives. But then, they lose no Love, andLove is the giver of life, and gives it to the fullness. Those who are united withLove know that nothing can stop them from loving, for Love is not only thesource of life in them, but Love is the source of a living force in them thattransforms them from within and is working through them in their everyday relationshipswith others. They are what Love is and they live and act as Love lives andacts.....

On the other hand, even if I hand over my body to be burned, or if I sell myself into slavish work, with a view to benefiting others, but have not Love, I gain nothing and it does me no good. The practice of self—immolation has nothing to do with Love, for Jesus did not come down and give up his life to humble himself, but to save us and bring us to the dignity of the children of God. His self-sacrifice on the Cross has its unique character in so far as it is God’s salvific action and it cannot be compared with any other kind of martyrdom or religious heroic acts. Giving one's life for an idea, even the highest idea, is surely not a Christian act and cannot be acceptable to God. Love does not take life, Love gives life and gives it to the full.

Charitable work for the needy, can be as questionable as old fashioned philanthropy, which had more to do with a scrupulous conscience, than with Love. This is no however, to deny the good that might come from the charitable works or aid actions which in themselves are indeed very valuable and important. There is a growing need in our world for that kind of aid, but still, it may prove disastrous to those who have hidden agenda and act out of some selfish motives. In the end, we will be judged by Love not by charity. And Love makes all the difference, for even a cup of water given to the poor, in the name of Love, counts. For those who act out of Love, no work is in vain, even if it might appear fruitless in our eyes. Love transcends our measure and efforts: 'All things work together for good for those who love God'(Rom.8: 28).

1 cor. 13; 3 And if I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but have not Love, I gain nothing. It seems clear that the bestowal of all one's possessions on others may be motivated by love. Paul does not deny this, but he affirms the possibility that charitable acts may proceed from lower motives. There is such a thing as heartless charity. One may be charitable to attract attention, to get good publicity or to acquire popularity. That sort of charity is obviously hypocritical and worthless. But also, one may give alms to the poor, hand them money or food, just to get rid off them and think that this absolves one from loving them and working for them on a wider, social level. Giving alms to the poor does not do justice either to them, or to Love. More than our money, they need us, our understanding, our friendship and our compassionate Love.

Those who have Love, who are one with Love, join together heaven and earth in themselves. They are those who have their head and heart in heaven, but hands and feet on earth. In other words, being absolutely united by faith with Love, they share in Love's vision and wisdom in heaven and in Love's works of mercy on earth. And this is for Paul, the essential characteristic of the true followers of Christ. To be a Christian is to share by faith in the wholeness of existence, which Christ brought about through his salvific activity. Jesus Christ is the meeting point, or better crossing point where what is divine and what is human, the vertical and the horizontal, heaven and earth, are joined together and become one. Christ's salvific activity has brought about a new union of humanity with God. Paul calls it a 'new creation' since it has introduced a new mode of existence into human history in which Christ and the Christian enjoy, as it were, a symbiosis'." By faith we all share in this new life which is not merely human but also divine, that is theandric. In Christ we are one with God the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit.

But evenworking miracles for the needy, helping than and healing their illnesses, mayprove disastrous to those who glory in their success. Those who have strongfaith 'so as to remove mountains' may see themselves or be seen by others asbeing in the line of Jesus, who also healed and worked miracles. But, the miraclesof Jesus were inspired by compassion, not a desire to be noticed or to get anykind of profit. Healing and miracles can easily become selfish business, unlessit is motivated by compassionate Love. Without Love, even the man of greatfaith who makes what seems impossible possible, counts for nothing and does no good. to be continued

My apologies for the delay, I have been busy with the beginning of the school year, we take off on the 1st. But now is the last weekend of my holidays so let me continue the series while I can. Thomas Aquinas had an answer to almost every question of his time. His philosophical and theological knowledge was enormous and his written works reached hundreds of volumes, but in the end of his life he said, that all these were nothing better than rubbish, only good for being burnt in fire. Knowledge, even genius knowledge, cannot give us life, even if it can transport us to the seventh heaven. It may give irresistible temptation to settle down in this realm of glory and keep us in the illusion, in separation from life and living people. Not those who understand best, serve best.We do not have to understand everything, but to love everything that God is giving us. Those who know better should be driven by Love to come down and do works of mercy; seek their neighbours and respond to their needs. To be continued
