Just found this article from UCONN's newspaper about the show I did last month with Brian Bergeron. Thought I'd share:
This past Saturday, students were given a taste of the musical stylings of Brian Bergeron, 24, and Ryan Schmidt, 20, courtesy of Live at the U. Though the two are separate singer-songwriters, their sounds, while equally individual, make them a compatible pair to share the stage. Bergeron's voice falls close to that of Howie Day and Schmidt is nearer to a Justin Nozuka, but the easy rapport that the two share lends itself to their performances, making for melodically seamless transitions from one set to the next.
New Hampshire-bred Schmidt, who describes his sound as "acoustic indie pop," was first up and dazzled the crowd with his soulful voice and romantic lullabies, including the original "I'm Not What I Used to Be." Perhaps the highlights of his set, though, were his rousing renditions of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and O-Town's "All or Nothing." Schmidt, who began picking up instruments at age seven, beginning with an alto saxophone, played in a few jazz bands before he says he realized "guitars were cooler and girls liked [them] better than marching bands."
Massachusetts-born Bergeron, who was performing for his third time at UConn, had a slightly different start in music. He says he did not grow up with music, making it "kind of a mystery," but did eventually take to the guitar in sixth grade. "It was more of an interest to me than being cool," he says. As his love for the guitar grew, so did his fondness for artists like Ryan Adams and Damien Rice, influences that certainly came through in his mellow, self-described "folk rock" set (during which he matched Schmidt's covers with one of his own, '80s hit "867-5309/Jenny"). The pair have grown to be easygoing friends through their shared journey with music so far, but the future may hold vastly different things for them. While Schmidt sees himself staying with music and "traveling and touring," Bergeron isn't so sure. "It might be with music; it might not," he said. "I've become really interested with energy sustainability and finding ways to better the environment." He adds simply, "Success to me is making a living." ------------------------------ Posted using ArtistData - The easiest way for musicians to update multiple sites at once.

9 out of 12 songs from the album are MIXED and I have decided on a sequence. I'M SOO EXCITED. Over the weekend I left the studio briefly to get some fresh air. I ended up inside a Rite Aid and before I knew it I was walking out with a kid's Ninja costume. Of course I wore it for the rest of mixing that night. Buffalo Tom was in Studio B and seemed to dig my attire. Album cover should be me as a ninja riding a unicorn. That would be badass.
So we're mixing the last 3 songs on Monday and Mastering soon there after. Things I need to do for this album: come up with a title, come up with a concept for art, and send it to everyone and their mother. Talk soon,
Ryan the Ninja

Hey blogosphere! It's been a while. Since I last wrote I've finished recording my album, moved back to Boston, and started classes up again at Northeastern. This weekend we will be mixing 9 out of the 12 songs. Hearing all the (nearly) finished songs is really exciting. I'd like to think this record has a lot of different sounds for a lot of different listeners. Many of the songs fall under the Indie Pop or Alt Country category. Can't give too much away. All For now,
Love Ryan

I have a conference call this morning so I got up early for that. Last night I was up late painting my room gray thus making it much more livable area. But this blog isn't about me painting. Last Wednesday I headed to New York with The Singhs for their show at Piano's. They were recording with legendary producer Tony Visconti and it was cool to be in the studio with him and meet him.
Saturday my roommate and I drove to Yorktown, NY to meet up with another roommate. Westchester county is an awesome place. I recommend you check it out. While there I saw Transformers 2. Despite it being really long and the critics hating it, i thought it was entertaining. Enough so that I saw it again on Tuesday. Then I started thinking about one of my favorite tv shows as a kid: Beast Wars transformers. The transformers were animals and it was the shit.
While in Yorktown I was introduced to something called the Wacky. It's an artery clogging breakfast sandwich complete with 2 fried eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, ketchup, and home fries. It was really good, but had I stayed another day and ate another Wacky, I'd be done for.
Monday was interesting and hectic. I drove from Yorktown into NYC to pick up some of The Singhs gear. Turned left onto a three lane one way while driving in the city (luckily no one was coming). I grabbed the gear and headed back to Boston. I was an hour late to my session at Q that night but managed to have a successful session despite being exhausted from 7 hours of driving. I sang harmonies on Under Attack and Pisces. I'm so excited with how they came out.
If you're in the Boston area in the next few weeks: check it

Hey everyone, first of all I want to apologize for not being excellent about replying to comments and messages these past few weeks. I recently moved to college (thought I'd try the whole academic thing) so I am still getting situated and as always working on the new album. But I do have a new video of a new song that will be on the album called "Under Attack"
What else is new? We are recording 7 more songs for the new album within the next two months with a bunch of new songs a lot of you have never heard of. I'm sure more and more live videos of them will appear in the coming months. I am also going to document the rest of my studio experience so expect in the studio vids and awesome commentary from me. I'm going to Montreal this weekend for pleasure, it will be a blast. Though I am not thrilled about the projected five below weather. eeeks
If any of you have questions for me or just want to say hi, leave a comment here, I WILL RESPOND.
All the best, stay warm Love from Boston

Hey everyone. Sorry I've been so absent from blogging for the past month I have been writing, performing and recording a bunch as well as getting situated with college. I want to thank everyone who came out to support me November 29 at the Paradise. It was a great show and it was great being able to showcase in such a great, dare I say it, historic venue. There are a few shows on my calendar for the next few months. January 5th at Passim in Cambridge I'll be playing as part of the Radiohead tribute night. I love their tribute nights, everyone is so good it's just a great night of music and it's always great to see my folk friends. January 16th I'm playing in Manchester, NH as a trio for a 2 hour original/cover set. February 28th (Day after my 20th birthday) I'll be at the Lizard Lounge doing the Elvis Costello sing-out and March 7th at Precinct doing an acoustic set.
Last Thursday was the Q Division Christmas party (my studio) and it was a really good time. It was funny to see the live rooms that we record in full of people lounging on couches. Earlier in the day, I paid Brian Bergeron a visit, he is almost done with his new album and it is sounding really awesome. I was surprised when I found out I was going to do some singing on it, we did some gang vocals and claps and it sounded really good on his song "Hanging Around". Check that out when it's ready.
This weekend I visited my twin sister in NYC. First night I was there they had a holiday party which was fun and I met a bunch of cool people. Second day we slept in past 1 in the afternoon, walked around a bunch, saw Four Christmases (is Vince Vaughn losing his touch?), I think I'm going to blame the script and not V.V., he is normally brilliant, and then went to an ugly christmas sweater party. Mine was totally the ugliest, and it felt great. Maybe a picture is in order, we'll see.
We're all in Cambridge right now (the family and I), because my parents house in NH lost power last thursday and still don't have it back today, monday. Hopefully they get it back soon, but it's been kindve fun having everyone in the city and being able to take my dog for a walk around Harvard.

a short short short clip from "Not What I Used To Be" off the new album
finale with Invisible
Any other news? Well I'll be playing at Six Flags New England this Summer so hopefully you guys can come see that and have a good day of theme park adventures before/after my set. I really hope I'm opening for Demi Lovato or the cast of Camp Rock 3. You know my love for all that is Disney.
All right, going to go enjoy this nice day

Hello all! Let me first say it's good to be back in the blog universe writing to you guys, I have been very busy working on the new record. How busy? Well we managed to track, mix and master nearly 5 songs in 5 days. These recordings are the best I've ever worked on and soon enough you will get to hear what I mean. We mastered three of the mixes ["Her Story", "Where You Are", and "Invisible (First To Fall)"]and are putting that on an album sampler disc and giving them to our label friends, music supervisors, and perhaps you!
The band: Phil Aiken ..s, Steve Scully on Drums, and Producer Ed Valauskas on Bass. We cut all 5 basics that day.

Matt Pynn throwing down some pedal steel on "Not What I Used To Be"

Aaron Tap playing some tasty licks before his show @ Berklee Performance Center w/ Matty Nay

Steve Scully shredding on Marimba for "Wake Up With You"

Phil Aiken channeling his inner wizard

Anna Lewis playing on "Wake Up With You"

Rafi Sofer our awesome engineer just being a cool guy

Producer/Bassist Ed Valauskas got a haircut! Nice shirt

Listening to some mixes in Studio A

I love this fricken nalgene!

That was more or less my album experience thus far. It has been a blast. I'm taking a month off in November to do some shows NACA, University of Hartford, and Sidewalk Cafe in NYC. We go back to the studio in December hopefully with some label interest.
A little side note. Last week I went to NYC for a press party for The Singhs and it was a blast. I met Randy Jones the cowboy from the Village People, along with a bunch of other cool people. We then did a live performance on WOR Joey Reynolds show. It is nationally syndicated so that was pretty cool. It is nerve racking being in a radio studio because of all the censorship rules, none of us wanted to slip. But we didnt!
Anna caught me displaying my Backstreet Boys moves to one of my newest recordings "Invisible (First To Fall)". So why not share it with you guys. After all, who doesnt love BSB?
Stay happy, keep warm, keep listening!

Nothing is guaranteed in this world. Nothing is promised. Time that you have with others is only borrowed at best. Today marked the end of a really good thing. Though I hate oversharing here I thought I'd let you know that a perfect relationship I was in is no more. My music schedule was a big opposing factor. I will never let go of my music or you guys. That is one love that will last a lifetime.
I recently produced/directed/performed/edited a live music video for the song "Where You Are". I really wanted to introduce it in a fun way since it is a front runner for being a single for the next album. Bare with me on the sound quality, it was performed live after all.
Thank you all for your continued support. It's you guys who keep me picking up the pen and writing my next song.
Much love,
R

Anyone who hikes knows what GORP is "Good Ol' Raisins and Peanuts" or "Granola, Oatmeal, Raisins, Peanuts". Let's just say I am quite obsessed with trail mix and have been eating quite a bit of it even though I'm back from my backpacking trip. My GORP had peanuts, M&M's, granola, dry roasted almonds, and raisins. Sooo good. Alright enough about GORP. I went on a four day backpacking trip through the White Mountains on the Appalachian Trail. Me and my friend Matt managed to summit six mountains and hike 30+ miles in four days. I knew I wouldn't be able to do the trip justice without documenting it. So here it is: and part 2. one day I'll post something relevant to my music, I promise. R
