Featuring Bo Carper, PA Furnace plus friends, including Lebo (Dan Lebowitz from ALO), Marshall Harrell & more! Friday, August 21, 2009 The Connecticut Yankee 100 Connecticut St. San Francisco Doors 9pm Show 10pm We are all sure to have an incredible and intimate evening of music in our Friend Fritz's living room. Thank you for opening The Yankee to us Fritz! And thank you to members of New Monsoon & friends for providing the music! Most of you probably know & love Kate and might be aware of the challenges that she is facing. For those of you that don't know, Kate has been diagnosed with "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord." We are getting together to help out Kate financially through not only the medical challenges that lie ahead, but to help ensure she is having the most fun possible. Kate will be there as the guest of honor for this special evening. Kate has been involved in the music community for quite some time, traveling far and wide to support the musicians she has discovered to love. In the few years I've known Kate I have seen her spread the word of these musicians, buying extra tickets, CDs and other merchandise to share with people in hopes of spreading the music she loves while supporting those bands. We have also seen Kate open her home to strangers in hopes of helping them through a rough time as well as numerous other people she would find through her work at the VA Hospital or randomly on a bus or at a local pub. Kate has also done tremendous healing through her work as a massage therapist over the years. And most who speak to Kate are sure to share a good laugh and a good time all around. Now it is our turn to show Kate how much we love her. We will be running a silent auction and are taking donations. So far we have a set of CDs from one of our infamous tapers, Lobster! A Ham Jam Visit with Tim Lynch, A Burlesque Performance & Workshop for 10 ladies by The AMAZING Coconuts Lunatique, A Private Tour for 10 at Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, A Print from Susan J. Weiand Photography, A Guitar Lesson in West Marin from Jeff Miller, Hand Crafted Pottery by Mary Mar Keenan, Custom Jewelry by Lisa B & Freda, as well as several signed Michael Everett posters and more. . . it is going to be great!!!! Please send me an email if you have a donation to contribute to the Auction. You can pre-purchase your $15 event tickets here: Click here for TICKETS (All proceeds are going directly to Kate.) We will be accepting cash at the door for tickets, but get there early as we are expecting a full house! If you can't attend, you can still donate directly to Kate (flexible amounts): Click here to DONATE We will also be accepting Cash & Credit Cards for the Silent Auction. And finally, please pass this on to others and other list of people who may want to attend or donate! New Monsoon: "New Monsoon Live" Staff Report Posted: 07/31/2009 01:00:00 AM PDT If they haven't done so already, fans of New Monsoon are advised to add this live album to their collection of CDs from one of the best jam bands to come out of Marin County. The double disc set was recorded over a three-night run in Texas last September. It comes on the heels of the 11-year-old band's most successful studio album, "New Monsoon V," produced by former Grateful Dead sound engineer John Cutler, next-door-neighbor of electric guitarist/singer Jeff Miller in Forest Knolls. This is New Monsoon's first live album in five years, and the first official release to feature the band in its cleaner, more stripped-down configuration as a five-piece group - drummer Sean Hutchinson and bassist Marshall Harrell along with founding members Miller, Bo Carper on acoustic guitar, vocals and banjo, and keyboadist-singer Phil Ferlino. Without its tabla player and percussionist, who left to raise families, the band may be smaller and less world music focused, but its sound is just as big, even majestic at times. Named after the El Ni-o storms that pounded the Marin coastline in 1997-98, when every day seemed to bring a new monsoon, the band's live sound reflects a kind of stormy power, with unbelievably tight vocal harmonies, tuneful original songs and thrilling flights of Grateful Dead-inspired instrumental improvisation. "The Other Side," one of the band's signature songs, for instance, is more exciting live than on its original studio recording. Produced by theband members themselves, this is one of the most vibrant live albums you're going to hear. Buy It: "New Monsoon Live," independent, www.newmonsoon.com; $17.50 - Paul Liberatore Marin IJ

New Monsoon: New Monsoon Live
By: Dennis Cook

There's a fundamental whomp to New Monsoon that's only grown stronger with each passing year, which has seen them grow leaner and denser in appealing ways as they've fully delved into the possibilities of the band's quintet configuration – a bit of musical geometry that suits them to a tee. There's all kinds of shorthand one can use to describe them – a rocked up electric jazz band, a world-wide modern ensemble with balls, etc. – but in the end their assemblage of details, full of seemingly disparate, un-reconcilable elements, gives equal weight to songs and instrumentals. And just because the other kids don't mix 'n' match like them doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. Quite the opposite, as evidenced by New Monsoon Live (New Monsoon Records), whose simple title neatly encapsulates the alive feel of this double disc set.

Culled from several very "on" nights in Texas, Live takes no time to dive into the deep end with as fine a version of "The Other Side" as they've ever played, with Bo Carper (banjo, acoustic guitar) singing in strong, clear tones and a wicked electric guitar flair-up near the end from one of the under-sung six-string maestros on the scene, Jeff Miller. The thick fog of the opener dissipates on the sunny "Naked Truth," where their philosophical pondering is anchored to Phil Ferlino's lilting keys and the tough, uncompromising low end of Sean Hutchinson (drums) and Marshall Harrell (bass). Even the lighter fare on Live is handled with a seriousness and intensity that keeps one tuned in – always a challenge when attempting to impart the live experience in the frozen grooves of a posthumous release. The bright colors and impactful shading throughout this collection makes for exciting music, and the sequencing keeps things interesting and engaging even though few tracks are under six minutes. New Monsoon fills space beautifully, moving with purpose and skirting the booby trap of noodling for noodling's sake. They're primo musicians so they could just riff and wander but there's a real focus on quality material and a palpable dedication to carrying each piece off with intelligent flair, like the epic storytelling of "Alaska" or the honeyed funk of "Greenhouse" here.

In some ways Live works as A Young Person's Guide To New Monsoon, bringing listeners up to speed on the NM story so far and offering a handy encapsulation of much of their core catalog. I've long said this band plays with a massive force, a sound fit for large spaces and big, starry skies but Live also shows how they've tooled their schema for clubs, too, with many numbers gaining bite and pummel that works well when the walls are close and the audience is sweating mere feet away. More than anything else, this is certainly New Monsoon's most swinging official live album yet, as sturdy an offering as one could hope for from this band outside of experiencing this music directly at their heel.

Hello Folks,

We just got back from playing Wakarusa and Riverbend music festivals. On Friday night we played a set at Wakarusa right before Railroad Earth. It was a good set in the revival tent, Tim Carbone sat in on last tune Bridge of the Gods.  We came off stage, packed our gear and then we found out about Sandy.  It hit me like a ton of bricks. As I walked aimlessly around the backstage area, I remembered each time I had the wonderful experience of being around one of the most gentle, kind and positive creatures I've ever known.  I really can't say enough about the Sandman other than if you knew him, you'd agree. The times, wonderful times at Sandy and Stella's house have always been truly special. Sandy the incredibly gracious host who went above and beyond for his guests, greeting you with that warm and calming smile, even when you knew he might be fighting back the pain.

The last time I saw Sandy was at Railroad Earth's show at the Fillmore a few weeks ago. It was fitting to hear about his passing as they were on stage. I went to the rail and let the music flow through me, thinking about how much Sandy loved and supported music and musicians.

They just don't make em like the Sandman anymore.

Love you my dear Brother..We will miss you
Jeff

Pandora is featuring New Monsoon this week on their Video Series page. "Between the three-part vocal harmonies, the twang-rich guitar soloing and the bubbling electric piano comping, New Monsoon hits its neo-jam stride with this live set at Pandora, shot for our concert series. Grooves and good vibes abound." Here is New Monsoon's artist page on Pandora. These videos were shot at Pandora's home in Oakland, and directed by Jason Blalock.
