Why aren't you listening?: Angel and the Lovemongers - The Humanist QueenPosted on Monday, December 15

John Hughes has a lot to answer for. If you weren’t a teenager in the mid-to-late 1980’s then his name may not mean a hell of a lot to you, but for any bloke that ever had a thing for Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald, or for any girl who wanted to get up close and personal with Judd Nelson in a library then you’ll probably have been smiling ever since you first read his name. Sixteen Candles. The Breakfast Club. Some Kind Of Wonderful. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Weird Science. For my generation, they’re classic films, all of them. They may be daft, they may be stupid, they may be ridiculous, but we love them. They’re ours and we embrace them like cherished heirlooms. Hell, I could probably quote most of Weird Science to you right now if you asked, but I won’t as I don’t want this review to become too long-winded. Those films are special, not only because they gave us memorable characters, Wyatt, Chet, Ferris, Cameron and Ducky to name a few, but because their soundtracks were bloody awesome. John Hughes helped me to fall in love with Oingo Boingo, The Vapors, The Specials, The Smiths, David Bowie, Patty Smith and Talking Heads. Hell he even made me listen to Simple Minds for a while, although I haven’t entirely forgiven him for that it must be said.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />....
.. ..
Suffice is to say that John Hughes pretty much defined our teenage years for his effect can be still be found all over the place. Like here, for instance. Angel and the Love Mongers’ The Humanist Queen is like the soundtrack to an unmade John Hughes movie. It’s one part Thompson Twins, two parts The Cure and a big hefty dollop of Morrissey. It’s probably two decades too late to make any big waves out there in chartland (if only because The Killers have beaten them to the punch) but for those of us that dreamt of showering with Kelly Le Brock, it’ll make us smile nonetheless.

About:
Angel Zuniga Martinez's roots may be in South Texas, but his music is positively pan-galactic. This baritone singer and southpaw guitarist made his move to the East Tennessee hills in Knoxville after his college career at Texas A&M University, and a fateful encounter with a beautiful woman. "Isn't it always because of a girl?," says Angel. Angel's songwriting takes a poetically thick, melodically quirky perspective on life, love, and sin. Plus, Angel's live shows are fun and energetic with the talented support of David Slack on bass and Frank Sheadrick on drums. For more information, visit the above websites or search Facebook or LinkedIn.
Angel and the Love Mongers were formed in the spring of 2004 in Knoxville, TN, by Angel Zuniga and drummer Eric Nowinski. Their self-titled first album was produced by Don Coffey, Jr. (Superdrag), and released on Disgraceland Records in February 2005. For their second album, they turned to veteran Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Let's Active, Wilco), who produced and played on The Humanist Queen, released by Rock Snob Records on September 4, 2007, following the band's June appearance at the Bonnaroo Festival. For more information, visit http://www.myspace.com/angelandthelovemongersknoxville.
The Square Room is a new, state-of-the-art performance venue located in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee in the Historic Market Square district.

To Anyone with a Heart and a Head
To my 42 million GENERATION "X" Brothers & Sisters
To the gifted 90 million GENERATION Y Future Dreamers,
My main avenue to earn money is not from music. I wish it was, but I still consider myself having a heart of an artist-dreamer. For almost 15 years, I've been working within the banking and financial industry. Most of my experience has been serving the wealth and influencial in our society.
There is fear and anger moving about in this circle. I've read about something like this coming for years. I've dreamt it. I've even had a horrible vision of Mexico being owned by the US. It then became a harbor for the US poor after being affected by a huge financial meltdown.
THE BAILOUT IS NOT THE ANSWER! It will only create a false sense of peace and calm for maybe 3 to 5 years before a huge demonic depressive storm. It will reward and give continuance to the "leaders" of capitalism and government that took us down this path.
I say let fall the towers of greed that created this mess. Let rise a new generation of leaders with hearts of stewardship! Call the Josephs out of the prisons.
Let TRUTH come out! If that takes us into recession, so be it! Better to burn a little now that to be eaten by the fire. Better to cut off a bad arm than to lose the whole body..
When a TREE is falling in the wrong direction after a BAD cut, the tree cutter CANNOT make an "adjustment" cut to correct the wrong.
Let's let the tree fall! Don't let our "leaders" bully us and our generation into swallowing a horrible, bitter pill.
Say NO to the Bail Out under ANY conditions!
Angel Zuniga Martinez

I have laced and will continue to lace alot of my songwriting with my insights on the levels of love, spirituality, religion, abuses of power, and spirit world evils that touch everyone's lives. They say write what you know. My community of Knoxville has recently been affected by both a school and Church shooting from both a mentally ill man and an angry young man with troubled pasts.
My mind wrestled with the "truth" of new Politics and Hope coming from our Presidential candidates and the reality of my local community healing its own needs and hurts.
We don't need government. We need each other.
...I didn't have a song in my heart at this moment...but I needed to vomit this out somewhere.

I just came back from the Durango Songwriter's music expo (www.durango-songwriters-expo.com ) held this weekend in Asheville, NC. Wow....I'm so inspired and excited about where the music and artistic community is heading in the near future. Some of the folks that stood out for me were:
Bruce Burch, the head of UGA music biz program and my former Belmont Publishing professor who is so REAL and full of insight. www.terry.uga.edu/musicbusiness
Jonny Vire (www.myspace.com/jonnyvire ), a young kick ass singer/songwriter from Boston whose voice and attitude I absolutely love.
Chris Gelbuda (www.myspace.com/chrisgelbuda ), man! this guy is FUN and a terrific songwriter/guitar player who tours for himself and with other artists.
Chuck Cannon (www.myspace.com/chuckcannon ), Damn! Chuck is such a CAT...He's a Nashville based songwriter that wrote "How Do you Like me Now?" but he's so much more than that!!!!! He made me tear up.
Steven Melrose -While Steven was at Retone Records, before he was A/R at Island Records, he was quoted as saying "Our whole thing is to have two fingers up to the major labels, and the other hand in their back pocket taking their wallet." (the 2 fingered salute is U.K.'s equivalent to flipping-the-bird in the U.S.) I love this man, as well as his fellow Brit friend, songwriter Roger Harris.
Anyway, I've got it on my calendar to be at the Next Durango Expo in August in Colorado! If you are a songwriter, I would highly encourage you to go....Come out and hang!
Love and Regards,
Angel Zuniga
