DRUMMER WANTED
----
http://www.880south.com
If you haven't heard of us already, we've been around for quite a
while. My name is Weege(Luigi), I sing, write, play a lil guitar. 880
South has been one of the mainline reggae/rock bands in downtown San
Jose since 2002, we're actually a Campbell band... but we actually got
it all kicked off in the late 90's as the Floppy Rods. We've rocked
stages with some of the best in reggae/rock, Slightly Stoopid,
Fishbone, the Expendables, Rebelution...and so forth....Enough about
the past.
If you care about influences, I think it means nothing, cause the 3
of us in 880 South don't even listen to the same music...so here
goes...go to our myspace
http://www.myspace.com/880south. There is a list on the bottom left.
Here is what's happening now and more recently. We parted ways with our
old drummer about 2 1/2 years ago, maybe earlier than that even. We've
released 2 killer albums that are nationally & internationally
recognized. We recently toured the west coast with our label mates The
Holdup. We've had plenty of circulation on iTunes, CD baby and Napster.
Our manager has his own radio show on 103.3 FM every Friday night
dedicated to the reggae rock scene. He also owns Dub Rock Records...We
are under 2 different record labels(one of them circulating in Japan).
We put on about 4-6 huge shows every year in the South Bay Area. Our
average draw is 125-175 on a weekday to 200-300 on a weekend! We've
rocked the Catalyst, Slim's, the Avalon and Voo Doo Lounge...We've
played as far as Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Diego. We
are looking to gig more regularly now that I've moved back from Texas.
So instead of hiring drummers like we have for the last 2 or 3 years,
we're ready to become a 4 pc again.
The music speaks for itself. We can care less about the outside
looking in, in a sense we're selfish cause we really write music to
make ourselves happy, we're just lucky to have fans and good friends
who love it and it's nice to be making a little profit as well. So all
we want is a drummer that loves what he's doing, can be creative as
well as take direction, isn't a glory hog because he/she understands
the importance of the songs direction, and understands his role in the
song. A drummer who doesn't have hang ups, is reliable, has his own
wheels, isn't late to practice, isn't a full blown drug addict, isn't a
mooch, and actually gives a fuck about high quality recordings.(That
means, can you play to a clik track?!?) tempo is clutch...We are
actually really organized for the most part, and aim to be great at
what we do.
Yeah... we want to record album 3, album 4, and so on...we're
taking big steps again. The new album is gonna be a huge step forward
and we need the right piece of the puzzle to complete it.
We're all self sufficient late 20's/early 30's musicians who have
managed to do some big things in a small world. The expectation and bar
is set pretty high because we've played with 3 of the best Bay Area
drummers...as far as we know. haha So let's get real cause we're
humble, but we're honest people and we will tell you if mess a part up,
or are playing way too fast. If you can't take the heat, look out cause
we can be cold motherfuckers. Maybe it's our chemistry that allows us
to let it out and say..."What the fuck Greg, that's not how you played
yesterday"...or "Weege you're singing way too soft, put some feeling
into it"...We are picky, I aint gonna pretend like we are not a little
stuck up. Don't mistake our haughty, arrogant ways as big ego cause we
think we're the shit. It's just pride and competitive nature. It's what
keeps us hungry...we're lookin for our Chad Smith, our Bud Gaugh, our
John Bonham... our big beat, sweet toned, monster...you get my point?
We nag each others, we poke fun at each others, we have fun, we
drink, one of us smokes, and the bottomline is...we're all comfortable
with each others. So you need to be easy to get along with. If you have
an ego that's uncheckable...we don't have time to make you feel better
about yourself. You can still play with us, but we're gonna probably
make fun of you on a regular basis. That's how we roll.
The only reason we're moving forward without our 2 hired drummers
is because they both have 2 or 3 bands each they are already committed
to. We need someone who is with us til the wheels fall off. We've
already lost out on a few big opportunities in the last 2 months, one
due to the current moving of my family and the unavailability of a
seasoned drummer.
So if you like what you hear, and understand...we're not gonna
emulate Pepper, Stoopid and the Expendables when we play live. We're
not surfers, you'll rarely see a joint being passed around practice(not
that we'd care if you lit up). We're city folk, blue collar reggae
funk, we like Bud Light and making tasteless doodoo jokes every now and
then. 2 of us have kids. We fix our cars, we have good paying day jobs.
We get dirty, gritty, and we're proud of that shit. We're not a lot of
things that you'd expect from a reggae/rock band, but that doesn't mean
you have to be like us, you just need to accept those things cause it
comes with the territory.
So to be clear.
We need a bad ass drummer. Don't care what you look like, who
you've been with, where you graduated from, how old you are, just come
out and rehearse some of our songs with us and make it shiny. We start
rehearsals in September.
You need to:
*be honest
*be experienced
*be reliable
*shower every now and then
*be self sufficient
*don't have hang ups(eg: hard drugs, crazy jealous wife or
girlfriend, drunk/druggie roommates who invite themselves to practice)
Perks
*You'll meet a ton of great people. Industry contacts, musicians, pretty girls, venue owners, and regular every day folk!
*You'll get album credit or studio session pay when we record. It's optional. It really depends on what you've written.
*You'll get paid per gig anywhere from $50-$150 a gig. Sometimes
more if the gig is choice. Sometimes, we get an opportunity to play
with a huge band and we get paid less, it's very rare we get paid less
because of our draw & drinking crowd.
*You'll really enjoy making something as a team player.
*You get to work with 3 incredibly creative musicians who may turn out to be 3 of your best friends.
So there is a learning curve, there is high expectancy. 3 strikes
and you're out rule is crucial. You flake on practice, you bring a dumb
ass chick who starts a fight at the bar, you throw beer at the sound
man are some examples. After your 3rd strike, it's over. No exceptions.
We also give a 2 week rule when rehearsing or writing a song. We
try something for 2 weeks, everyone votes on wether we like it or not,
and we move forward. We love suggestions, we love implementation and
sometimes it's fun to take a really fast song and play it hella slow,
just for shits and giggles, it keeps practice kinda fresh actually.
What we need from you is to learn the 6 songs on myspace. Learn em
good, and email us when you're ready and we'll schedule a time to
rehearse in September.
