Now we were recording in the studio this week and we had a major issue. It seems several smoke breaks had left the doors open and the cats had gotten out. There was some upset when a dead cat was spotted in the road so we went and snow scraped a cat to get visual confirmation. Well a few rather funk smell minutes latter we figured it our Not fun. It was however not our cat so we gave it a small burial and went back to metal.

Think ya know "Dark"? I thought so too, until I encountered a new version the other night. I entered the Prince Deli and Sports Bar not exactly knowing what to expect, but I knew it would be good. For starters, I had spent time with one half of the duo I was there to cover. MANDY WOLF was one of our all time best HillBetties. I had  heard the music produced by the half of this duo , LETICIA, but I obviously did not pay attention to the lyrics and overall fabric that makes up her music. LETICIA WOLF played some of her own music to start the show and I , for lack of a better term, "Fell in Love." Her music has a sultry, flowing and emotional, even slightly Country feel and I like that, but it was the combination of that sound and the DARK lyrics that sealed the deal. The song I'm speaking of is "God Killed my Love" in particular. As she sang and played in that soothing fashion I experienced, the lyrics describing the way a lover picks up her cheating, rotten  EX, takes him home, and smothers his ass with a pillow, was a super pleaser for Ole Skip. From that angle, she and her Sister Mandy turned and gave me a glimpse of their new greatness, THE WOLF SISTERS. This is a clever, even comedic approach to the dark reality behind the eyes of women who see all, but divulge little. The song "Douche Bag Factor" caused me to stop shooting pics for a minute and double over in laughter. Having covered many, many, MANY venues in the late night hour, both dance clubs and music arenas alike, I had no doubt noticed the prevalent attire of "off the rack", store bought "Rock-n-Roll" clothing that is splattered just about everywhere. This song "Douche Bag Factor" was an astute observation of the "Character", too often, wearing that attire and what women REALLY think about them. It caused me literally LMFAO. If any of you get the chance, you must check out LETICIA WOLF and THE WOLF SISTERS and come to realize a jewel in your midst. These girls are awesome and have the undyin g respect of the TWISTED HILLBILLY MAGAZINE STAFF. All you METAL HEADS out there need to take a short break from the moshing and head banging and come over to the OTHER DARK SIDE for just a bit. Catch'em when ya can. I sure as hell will.

LIFE IS SIMPLE and we must keep it that way to be truly happy in this life. This is one lesson I haven taken with me from a very dear friend that recently passed on. We are all connected. This is a known fact that is part of the fabric, the culture of the Appalachian region. Makes no difference here, whether you drive a BMW or a pick up truck, or a Hummer H3 with big harry spikes all over it, when the chips fall, there are no differences. Exteriors in this part of the country really are, just self expression. It is this realness that makes the type of LEGENDARY men and women we produce and the amazing wisdom they carry and pass on. One such LEGENDARY MAN was James William (Bill/BrownDog) Carrier. He graced this world for very nearly 89 years. He raised 7 kids, had 17 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren and he LOVED all of them unconditionally. The door was always open no bad how bad ya had screwed up. He was a man that handled his affairs in a straight forward fashion and always had sweetness beneath his direction. He was a man with a 6th grade education that knew more about business than very many top ranking C.E.O.s and demonstrated it more than a few times (to their faces). Bill had the best sense of humor I ever encountered. He wasn't "easy" on ya though. He knew that expectations produced the best kind of results in people. I first encountered Bill when I was selling luxury custom motorhomes for a Texas firm. We traveled with the NASCAR circuit in the mid 1990's and it was generally one big money making party. In those days of NASCAR, you had total access. It was a "Hometown Crowd". Bill was hosting us on his property at a particular race. Every morning, between 5:30 and say 7:00a.m., I would take one of our display area golfcarts and drive over to the Campground Kitchen at Bill's place and get biscuits and gravy. Well, the whole family and I adopted each other almost immediately. They must have thought I was gettin' up extra early to get at those biscuits and gravy, when in fact, I hadn't even been to bed yet; heck, I had just quit drinking moonshine within the hour ;o). At any rate, a union had been formed. Over the 15 years (and many races) that we have all known each other, Bill, his family, and I have shared many experiences, some painful, but most glorious. We have been together in both joy and strife and we have gone to battle on one another's behalf more than once (and sure as hell would again this minute if deemed remotely neccesary). In those years we shared I watched Bill and learned. He had an amazing apptitude for reducing a complicated problem into a very simple equation. Bill knew that LIFE IS SIMPLE which makes him amongst the wisest men i've ever known. WE complicate issues. Most people look at a myriad of irrelevant considerations when trying to make decisions. We do this because we really don't want to make a "hard" decision  so we come up with a ton of reason's why "it won't work" to keep from commiting. This is where I always saw the glaring difference between Bill and most others. He always reduced a "problem' to it's most basic structure, made a decision and executed a solution without a bunch extraneous emotion and never an ounce of hesitation or worry. He was a leader and in that an exceptional asset to all that knew and loved him. As I sat at his Entombment ceremony, it occured to me that death hadn't taken Bill; He had done his work, he had loved his whole life and when the time came, he took death. Make no mistake; I MISS HIM and I WILL CONTINUE TO MISS HIM, but his passing was more like a graduation than a tragic loss. He wrung every ounce of use out of his body and this life. He learned, he taught, but above all he LOVED. One of the most valuble lessons I took from Brown Dog was this. There is but one way to truly be a man and it is done using your HEART. I know that somewhere in the cosmos, Bill is leaning over a pool table, and havin' a nip of "squeezins" while displaying that playful grin that revealed the rascal in him. I know he's in a better place and that his presence enhances and amplifies goodness in the hereafter. I will miss my friend, but I'll never lose him. He will live forever in the hearts and memories of those he touched and knowing he has gone ahead of us makes me more comforatble about "getting there" myself one day. He'll have the afterlife whipped into shape by the time we arrive, I'd bet my life on it.

As we have gone our merry way overthe last 3+ years, covering , literally, hundreds of bands and events, we find the common thread and driving force is, still to this day, our undying love for the music, BANDS, MODELS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, VENUES and the FANS; YOU !!!! Moe and I cannot begin to put into words our gratitude, respect, and adoration of every single one of you. At many of our board meetings we express and witness true emotion in the cause. I am at a loss as to how to say thank you to all those who frequent the site (THMAG.US). You have been so supportive, even in your critical remarks, and we appreciate you for your input. We shall endeavor to stay on track and bring you WHAT YOU WANT. Moe and I realize that many of you may have sent us e-mail and comments that seemed to go unanswered, unread and/or unattended. If you have ever experienced this we apologize. Our schedules keep us slammed to the wall. Know this, our efforts, the ones that cause us to err in response, are still, and will always be, pursued with YOU in mind. If you have ever felt ignored, we apologize, but know this; YOU ARE NOT. I don't want to come across as some completely selfless asshole either; of course we LOVE what we do and we get a unique reward for it, EXPERIENCE. To date this publication has done nothing but try to bring the truly talented MUSICIANS, MODELS, PHOTOGRAPHERS, and the VENUES, across the world, into a light that labels, agents , and promoters have failed to shine on you. We have done this at a near "break even" rate and our only true profit to date is YOU and WE ARE RICH in that alone !!!!! We hope to be able to bring you the service we provide in a manner pleasing to YOU. There is no plea for help here. That would be like asking you to help me ride my Harley ;o). We simply wanted each of you to know how we feel about ya. So there.

I had a typical hillbilly friday night. I picked the kids up from the cement pond and wondered to the nether regions to hear some good ole fashion knee slap, your daddy is drinkin and he slapped ya down hillbilly music. While I was there I ate some Memphis style barbeque with three fellars from the UK on a US roadtrip that were associated with a lot of the bands we cover. After a lick of moonshine, a run thru scary town and some hecklin from Skip I am safe at home! Next time I am takin my guns!

Current mood:  cantankerous
Category: Religion and Philosophy

We have a huge pounding ran nailing the roof of the house tonight. Its the kind that lulls you into relaxation if you are home and is a pain in the ass if you are about in the world. We had some fog rolling down the valley like a ghost waiting to snatch the Saturday Night Drinkers when they drive the mountain curves. This is the night of legends!

I was pondering earlier while we were out in this deluge at a club that was less than evil enough to contain us, that evil is and only is a concept developed and honed in the depths of the human brain. I mean we have those classical referenes from the Greeks and the often misinterpreted phrases in the bible to give us some thinking material but most is just the imagination running like a methlab on a Sunday night.

This is the type of music that seems to be gathering my interest on the ole trusty ipod lately. The kind of music that requires demons to sing the harmonies. To me though it is much much cooler to have the demonic and the harmony parts. This makes a great contrast and brings out the evil parts of the screaming parts.

Anyway I am on a rant and missing the dropping rain that is waiting to lull me into a long mountain sleep. I hope that you all have  pleasant evenings and remember we love ya here on metal mountain

People who know me often ask why I am so fascinated by metal. I mean a man with a PHD is supposed to be more refined according to social standards. The answer is plain simple, Its more intelligent. I mean metal music often reflects deep thoughts of heaven and hell, forklore and the occult. Mix this with the ability to rapidly move your head in such a fashion that your neck might fall off and you have perfection. Dont give me any of this Bobby left me and I am sad horseshit. I want to hear about how Lucifer has plotted for 10,000 years to singe my unholy soul in a lake of fire while Slayer plays the house music!

What a killer easter weekend we have had at home this week. It is nice to be back off the road and see old friends. We ran into some great kin folk Straight Line Stitch at the Chamaira concert and they reminded me why I am endeared to them so much.
You see they take the time to care about their fans. They get out in the crowd and show love and support. In contrast I meet many bands who want things from our organization that do not take the time to work their end. They want us to run articles without a bio or pictures available. They dont take the time to reach out to their fans and therefore they alienate themselves from support.
Anyway besides my soap box I hope you have a great easter weekend. Take some time this week to see what you can do to support your fans. Reach out get connected and work for it! If you do not believe it, we cannot believe it!
Lots of luv

People often ask me why we undertake this mission of chasing bands around the world and I have had to give their inquiries a turn around the ole hillbilly brain. First of all let me tell you its not easy. You spend most your time chasing the access through endless chains of people and often find out that none of them dare speak with one another. That is not to mention the hazardous job that Skip and his staff have of wading thru sees of moshers to get the correct angle on a shot.
I guess my answer is this. 1 ) I love music- I say music instead of metal because I am not a member of the we listen to only one genre and kill all that oppose club. 2) I love people- most of our time in chasing a story has to do with the stories and lives of musicians. Often these guys are living from gig to gig fighting an uphill battle. They are however some of the best people you will ever meet. 3) I am tired of mainstream- what I mean is there is not a format out there that interest me. I mean show me a mix of bluegrass and black metal with a toothless hillbilly and a smokin hot big breasted hillbetty anyday.
Anyway I hope you know we do it all because you guys that read give us energy. You make it worth doing just by letting us share our twisted life with you. So with that in mind please address all hate mail to skip@twistedhillbilly.com.
Now lets see if he catches this blog!
