Bowery grows from acoustic duo into five-piece rock band
By John Sinkevics [October 22, 2009]

GRAND RAPIDS -- Making the transformation from a mild-mannered acoustic duo to a "fire-breathing" five-piece rock band presents its challenges, from hammering out new arrangements for songs to juggling extra schedules for rehearsals.

But Phill Kulas and Shanee Laurent have embraced the transition in a major way, turning their Grand Rapids duo Bowery into a dynamic new outfit that's gotten "bigger sounding" and faster.

"We're still pop-oriented," said Kulas, 33, guitarist and chief songwriter for the group, "but we are actively shifting to doing more rock tunes."

"The new stuff is really exciting. There's a certain level of credibility that comes with extra members," added Laurent, 29, who shares lead vocal duties. "It was time. We coveted the big sound."

Although expanding its ranks to include Tyler Steimle on guitar, Scott Hickok on drums and Todd VanTongeren on bass has given Bowery more of a rock vibe -- a la The Killers, The Dandy Warhols and Stars -- Kulas and Laurent retain the flavor of their recent debut album, "Our Love is a Ghost," which incorporated everything from pop to jazz textures.

That's because producer/mentor Joel Ferguson of the band Papa Vegas encouraged the duo to add layers of sounds -- from keyboards to electric guitars to drums -- to its compelling tunes.

Kulas said they went "absolutely bonkers" in the studio at times, with the duo absolutely trusting Ferguson's experience and judgment.

"We use him as a soundboard for if this a good song," said Kulas, who used to play guitar in the hard-rock band Moto and now repairs guitars for RIT Music as his day job. "We have the best outside ear you can imagine."

Granted, all that extra layering made it difficult for members when it came time to replicate the studio tracks in a live setting as a five-piece band. But they were buoyed by the potential for an expanded sound and, after a certain amount of "trial and error," thrilled with the results.

It's been a satisfying journey for an acoustic duo which started in 2007 making the rounds of open-mic nights at places such as Louie's Bar & Rocket Lounge, Founders Brewing Co. and the Monarch Club. They played 100-plus gigs as a duo in a year's time.

"We'd learn as many covers as we could to fill out the night," recalled Laurent, who does technical writing and graphic design for Grand Rapids' Broadway Systems by day.
Working with Ferguson, the band already has material and plans for two follow-up CDs -- an acoustic duo EP and a full-throttled, full-band rock album -- with hopes they can be completed for release next year.

"Now we're not as scared to throw that kitchen sink in," Kulas said.

Bowery has recently entered Planet Sunday studios to record, with Joel Ferguson once again at the helm. While finishing preproduction sessions for the upcoming "The Without you", Shanee and Phill are taking a few weeks to record an acoustic EP of new material, some of which will surface later on as electric tunes for our followup album. With the songs being a lot bit more simplistic than our previous studio offerings, we should be completed in just a few weeks time. We'll let you guys know about a release date, as it's not too far off. Here's the songs we're working on in the studio...
"To Stay/To Leave"
"The High Point of Low"
"The Without You"
"Knot"
"Anywhere You Are"
"I Say Things I Shouldn't Say"

Lots of writing has been occurring, and we're working the live band back up to speed for some upcoming gigs, as well as doing a few acoustic duo gigs too.
We'll keep you guys posted as things develop.

Maybe as rocking as we'll get on the new record.
But it's still got sharp hooks.

"Everything Starts To End"

I fell in love with the sound
Of the world breaking down on me
I didn't know what I'd found
I just knew that I loved to bleed

And you alone
Could hear my songs
I felt it in my bones when you said
Everything starts to end

Not every ending is sweet
Your words hung heavy and buckled my knees
And all those terrible terrible things that we screamed
They really made us wish that we were liars...

And you alone
Could hear my songs
I felt it in my bones when you said
Everything starts to end

Ba-ba-da-ba-bah-bah x lots

And you alone could hear my songs
I felt it on my bones when you said
And you alone could hear my songs
I felt it in my bones when you said
Everything starts to end.

This one is not so secretly one of my favorites that'll be on the new record.

"Knot"

Sweet. You called me sweet
but it's the sour of my tongue that you've been missing
Sense. Not innocence
Cause there ain't no sense in guilty hearts not meeting

I spent my life above a second coming
You wasted yours beneath a long goodbye
We sell the truth so let me tell you something
There's only time enough for living a lie

Love's not getting you down
When love is not around
It's not love that's getting you down
It's not around.

Keep. Our secrets we keep
And through these parting lips of answers now we speak
Blame. There's no one to blame
Cause when the cuts ran red in front of you
We both did what we needed to...

I spent my life above a second coming
You wasted yours beneath a long goodbye
We sell the truth so let me tell you something
There's only time enough for living a lie

Love's not getting you down
When love is not around
It's not love that's getting you down
It's not around.

This one will be the title track to our upcoming full length album, slated for release this coming spring. It's been played out at acoustic shows thus far, and it's a good one. :)

"The Without You"

We can talk about it
As soon as you get back
It'll help hold in all the hurtin in our words
But we both know you ain't never comin back...

You left me more than questions
Three hundred eighty days to ask for just one more
If life has given me an answer
It's that life without you ain't what I'm living for

Now my days drag on forever
And the nights they do the same
I could remember every moment spent with you
But just remembering ain't never gonna do

You left me more than questions
Three hundred eighty days to ask for just one more
If life has given me an answer
It's that life without you ain't what I'm living for..

Hi friends,

We've got a few interesting pieces of news at the Bowery camp and we thought we'd pass them along!

Publicity

So Phill got us involved with a very cool site called Garage Band. It gives the internet public the ability to listen to our songs, rate and review them, and put us on the charts! On the site, Bowery has won 2 Track of the Day Awards; for "Beleeza" (GarageBand.com's electronic track of the day on Tuesday, August 11th) and for "I Don't Have Time to Miss You" (GarageBand.com's alternative pop track of the day on Monday, August 24th--Shanee's birthday!).

And "I Don't Have Time To Miss You" is catching attention! This week on the entire site, it's #1 for the "Coolest Chill-Out Track", #2 for "Best Sequencer/Effects Programming" and "Best Potential Movie Soundtrack", and #3 for "Best Female Vocals" categories! And in the alternative pop genre the track ranks #1 for many categories, including "Best Male Vocals", "Best Female Vocals", "Best Guitars", and "Best Production"! Check out Bowery's profile on GarageBand.com and let us know what you like!

Shows

Phill & Shanee will be playing at Fes2val on Saturday, August 29th! For those of you who don't know what Fes2val is, it's an all ages all-day celebration of 2 man bands on the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids! You'll find us on the Gillette Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge that runs behind DeVos Place and into Ah Nab Awen park. The fun begins at noon and goes until 9:00 PM. Bowery will be playing at 2:00 PM on Stage 2. Check out the artist lineup and listen to artist tracks on the music player on the right side of the Fes2val homepage! Admission is $5, and a $2 discount is available for those who arrive via bike, moped, motorcycle, or scooter rather than take a car. Kids 12 and under get in free. Beer will be available to those of age.

Our 5-piece band will be playing at Founders Brewery on Saturday, October 24th with the Total Blam Blams and the Stereofidelics! Founders is an award-winning brewery that has many unique brews and a great menu!

And at each of these shows, we'll be selling copies of "Our Love Is A Ghost" for the reduced price of $5 (normally $10).

Members

Our bass player, Paul Geoghan, has decided to move on and dedicate his full attention to his other band, Glean Infusion. We wish him the best and are currently seeking a bass player to fill the hole in our 5-piece.

Studio

We'll be going back to the Planet Sunday Studios very soon to begin recording our second album, "The Without You"! It will include new tunes that we've been writing: "I Don't Have Time To Miss You", "The Without You", "Collapse", "To Stay/To Leave", "With Love, Sincerity", "Knot", "Salvation", and "Other Girls + Boys".

I think that's it! Hope to see you August 29th!

Cheers,

Funeral Banquet

It isn't everyday we gather 'round
To talk it through and find deeper meanings
Keeping somber in gesture and in sound
We're spillin' truth into sleeves and tissues

I had the words that I needed to say
(My lips went through all the motions)
We said the words, and then we threw them away
(You listened to silent volumes)

-I've never been so full of nothing to say...-

The long drives to sweetly scented ground
Shuffling feet and pleated dress pants
We're focusing on every detail
With swollen eyes and shaking hands
The quick stares and life-long glances
The scores of muted x-mas memories...
We're swallowing up every movement
With bleeding eyes and blistered hands

I had the words that I needed to say
(My lips went through all the motions)
We said the words, and then threw them away
(You listened to silent volumes)

I find your name printed with loving care across the programme
The ink stains my hands, so despite the smears we're still together

I had the words that I needed to say
(My lips went through all the motions)
We said the words, and then threw them away
(You listened to silent volumes)

They just keep getting meaner.

"Salvation"

I'm in love with my hate
I can't breathe without it
I'm still obsessed with the taste
So I circle round it
For me to feel anything
I have to be without it
There's nothing left in these veins
There's nothing more for you to bleed out

Who would have guessed that our salvation was an empty parade?
A charade...
We should have known that this salvation meant our ending alone.
We're alone.

This isn't you vs. me
Am I a guest in your reality?
Now I'm starting to see
That the punishments were good for me
You know I can wait patiently.
Uh huh...
There's nothing lonely bout hate
At least it never leaves

Who would have guessed that our salvation was an empty parade?
A charade...
We should have known that this salvation meant our ending alone.
I'm alone

So this salvation can wait
I'll live all my life for destiny
But when you love with your hate
You can miss the point with certainty

Who would have guessed that our salvation was an empty parade?
A charade...
We should have known that this salvation meant our ending alone.
Us alone.
